South by Southwest on a student budget

outh by Southwest, Austin, Texas’ film and music festival, is not just for those who have enough money to pay for the high-priced ticket. What few people seem to know about the event that runs through this weekend is that there are hundreds of free parties and shows open to the general public, which means it’s totally feasible for a student budget.

Tuesday kicked off the music portion of the festival, which has arguably been the most popular part of the festival in recent years.

Although free parties and unofficial shows are regularly scheduled along with each official SXSW show, the free events are somewhat overshadowed by the official showcases.

The bands and artists that performed this year include big-name artists such as Lady Gaga as well as up-and-coming bands like American Authors. However, equally popular names in music have announced their involvement in free shows throughout the week, which means that everyone can afford to party at SXSW — even broke college students.

One of Austin’s largest record stores, Waterloo, has free concerts Wednesday through Saturday,

and the artists playing aren’t unheard of by any means — The 1975, Charli XCX and Cash Cash are just a few of the headliners for the day parties.

Butler Park is hosting Foster the People and Childish Gambino for free shows over the weekend.

MTV will host the annual Woodie Awards across the street from the Austin Convention Center on Thursday.

For those who are of legal drinking age, there are plenty of nighttime shows at bars throughout downtown featuring live bands. The Hype Hotel, a Taco Bell-sponsored event that has featured artists such as Passion Pit, is not only one of the most popular venues at SXSW, it’s also one of the venues that is free.

And Austin itself is home to many unique experiences, such as a graffiti park, historic record stores, outdoor attractions like Barton Springs Pool and award-winning barbecue.

At face value, SXSW is not a cheap event. Walk-up prices for a music badge cost nearly $800. However, dig a little deeper and you’ll find that SXSW offers a ton of entertainment for very little money.

Crash at SXSW kills festival-goers MCLATCHY TRIBUNE

A

USTIN, Texas — Fleeing a routine early morning traffic stop in downtown Austin, a suspected drunken driver crashed through a police barricade and sped down a street crowded with South by Southwest festival-goers, killing two and leaving a trail of injured pedestrians over two blocks before hitting a taxi and a parked van.

Twenty-three people were taken to area hospitals, including two in critical condition with severe head injuries.

Seven others also remained hospitalized Thursday afternoon, including three in serious condition with injuries that include a spinal fracture and head injuries.

“The two critical patients I have a great deal of concern and worry about,” said Dr. Christopher Ziebell, emergency room director at University Medical Center Brackenridge. “Not everyone with these injuries survives.”

The driver — identified as Rashad Charjuan Owens, 21, of Killeen — was struck with a police taser and arrested as he tried to flee on foot. He was treated for minor injuries at University Medical Center Brackenridge and released into police custody, where he will face two charges of

capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.

“That vehicle was used as a weapon, and he will be charged with those crimes,” Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said.

One of the dead, a Dutch musician and music agency employee identified as Steven Craenmehr, was riding a bicycle near the intersection of East 11th and Red River streets when struck. The other, an

Austin woman on a moped, also was killed.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Another rider on the moped, a man, was injured.

The incident began around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday when an Austin police officer tried to pull over a suspected drunken driver on the Interstate 35 frontage road. The driver pulled into a Shell gas station at East Ninth Street , using his turn signal and “feinting as if to yield” before speeding the wrong way down Ninth Street, Acevedo said.

The suspect turned right onto Red River, crashing through a barricade and forcing a uniformed police officer to leap out of the way to avoid being struck, Acevedo said.

Red River, which was closed to vehicles, is home to many popular clubs that were hosting South by Southwest music showcases, and horrified music fans watched as the speeding four-door sedan slammed repeatedly into pedestrians, a bicyclist, a moped and a taxi before jumping a sidewalk and striking a van in a parking lot, Acevedo said.

From start to finish, only one minute elapsed from the time the driver was pulled over until the final crash, Acevedo said.

Wes Anderson graces screens at Loft

f it has deadpan comedy, neatly constructed scenes and Bill Murray, there’s a high probability that it’s a Wes Anderson film.

For the remainder of March, The Loft Cinema is screening “The Life Cinematic With Wes Anderson: A Retrospective” in celebration of the director’s most recent film, released earlier this month.

“We had always wanted to show a Wes Anderson retrospective, and it’s good timing now with his new film that just came out: ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel,’” Yanc said. “A lot of us here at The Loft really like Wes Anderson, though; we’re excited about doing the screenings.”

Six of the director’s eight films, known for their highly stylized characters, costumes, music and details, will be shown in addition to a special collection of shorts.

The series began Wednesday and continues through the remainder of March and beginning of April.

“What I always notice and like about Wes Anderson is that his films don’t look like anyone else’s films,” said Jeff Yanc, program director of The Loft Cinema.

“When you see one of his films, you immediately know it’s his.”

The films will not take to the big screen in chronological order.

Yanc said that The Loft Cinema decided to start with Anderson’s first film, “Bottle Rocket,” and

Issac Ortega celebrates his victory with close friends after being elected president of the Associated Students of the University of Arizona for the 2014-2015 academic year on Thursday night.

Issac Ortega was named the next president of the Associated Students of the University of Arizona when election results were announced on Thursday night.

The 5,046 total ballots cast awarded Ortega, a business economics junior, the presidency. Ortega will succeed Morgan Abraham, an engineering management senior, as ASUA president.

“None of this, honestly, would have been possible without the amazing people by my side,” Ortega said. “I could never dream of doing this, ever, and this is beyond surreal. I would just like to say thank you to everybody else. It wasn’t me; it was everybody else.”

Ortega beat out his opponent, Taylor Ashton, a political science and economics junior, by a 353 vote margin, receiving 53.3 percent of the votes to Ashton’s 45.6 percent.

The position of executive vice president went to Jordan Allison, a junior studying

journalism and gender and women’s studies. Allison beat her opponent, Daniel Choice Anderson, a political science and psychology sophomore, with 2,233 votes, or 69.3 percent of the total.

“I am so overwhelmed; the support has been amazing,” Allison said. “I cannot wait to begin this next year as executive vice president.”

The only candidate running his position, Daniel Douglas, a philosophy, politics, economics and law sophomore, became the next administrative vice president.

Of the 17 candidates running for senate, 10 were elected to office. Those senators, in order of votes received, are Elena Gold, Ellen Dunn, Brooke Serack, Michael Finnegan, Joshua Wexler, Joey Steigerwald, Jack Emery, Trey Cox, William Box and Joe Zanoni.

UA alumni writers come home Tucson Festival of Books welcomes back authors who earned their degrees at UA to share thoughts on writing

he Tucson Festival of Books will welcome many alumni back to the UA campus this weekend, two of whom are masters of the newspaper industry and have fond memories of their days as students.

Daniel Jones has spent the last decade compiling the popular “Modern Love” column of the New York Times.

He graduated from the UA creative writing master’s program in 1991, and will be presenting a love-themed discussion on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Arizona Daily Star tent.

Bill Walsh graduated from the School of Journalism in 1984 and is now a copy editor at The Washington Post.

He will share his passion for grammar and words in a presentation on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., also in the Arizona Daily Star tent.

In their jobs, both alumni have to be the bearers of bad news at times. Jones is challenged with handpicking a single essay from a pool of about 120 submissions each week for his column. Daniel Jones, author of the ‘Modern Love’ column for the New York Times, will make an appearance at the Tucson Festival of Books on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Jones’ panel on Saturday will include selected readings from his book “Love Illuminated,” a question and answer session and the presentation of animated adaptations of Jones’ various columns.

Of all the thousands of essays he’s read at the New York Times, Jones said that one of his favorites is “What Shamu Taught Me About a Happy Marriage,” published in 2006.

The essay remains one of the most popular articles of the newspaper’s history, and Jones says that the author has even signed a movie deal.

“The great thing about sticking with this job is that I can begin publishing more unusual material,” Jones said.

Puzzler reveals methods

erl Reagle says there are secrets hidden within the English language waiting to be found, and his mind seeks those precious

Reagle creates crossword puzzles. He builds enigmas with a unique play of pop culture and linguistic twists.

Reagle has an episode of “The Simpsons” based on his puzzles. He was also featured in the documentary “Wordplay” and collaborated with Google to create a crossword doodle for the 100th anniversary of the crossword puzzle. It’s fair to say Reagle is a crossword guy.

A little over 100 years after the crossword’s invention, Reagle is not only honoring the importance of the puzzle at the Tucson Festival of Books this weekend, but he will also showcase the wonders of the patterns and wordplay that he focuses on.

“Words are funny,” Reagle said.

“Language is a playground that never ends.”

Merl Reagle collaborated with Google to create a crossword doodle for Google’s home page on Dec. 21, 2013, the 100th anniversary of the crossword puzzle.

He keeps a small notebook pocketed like an FBI badge that he whips out so he can capture all of the funny words and moments that he encounters every day.

It takes time to gather all of the tidbits and puns that will fit into the theme of a puzzle, he said.

Despite the many collections in his notebooks, that alone is not enough to produce a puzzle. There are far more rules to building the puzzle than there are to solving it.

For example, the black squares

within the grid must look the same when turned 180 degrees. That means that the words must also be balanced with their number of letters.

Reagle offers the example of David Letterman’s Top Ten list. Reagle said that Letterman’s list can be anything he wants, any word length for each answer.

People who grew up in the 1990s probably remember the terror that came from staying up late reading “Goosebumps” books.

Akram Kateregga does. He’s now a journalism senior, but he remembers being in the fifth grade and reading books by Stine, the author of the “Goosebumps” series, who will be at the Tucson Festival of Books this weekend.

“At the time, they actually used to scare me,” Kateregga said. “If it was on the weekend, I would stay up long hours until I finished reading the book. I couldn’t put it down. A lot of them had good scary endings that would actually keep me up, give me some nightmares, but not enough to put them down.”

Several prominent children’s writers, including Stine, will discuss their work at the festival this weekend on the UA Mall.

Kathy Short, professor and co-chair of the children and teens authors committee, said there will be plenty of activities for university students this weekend.

“We have 65 children and teen authors who are coming to the festival,” Short said.

“They are top people in the field. This is an extremely rare opportunity to see the many authors and illustrators of that stature, and they’re doing a range of sessions.”

Alongside writer workshops, there will be artists teaching about illustrations and animations that are crucial in children’s literature.

“I have illustrators that are doing sessions

that are studio lessons where they’re demonstrating a watercolor technique or they’re demonstrating an animation technique, so students here would be interested in those sessions whether or not they’re interested in children’s books,” Short said. “It may not be that they’re interested in reading that person’s books, but if they’re interested in being a writer or being an illustrator, then those sessions can be ways for them to get real insights into the process that people are engaged in.”

Visiting authors and illustrators all have books that came out within the last year, Short said. Among those are Lois Lowry, who wrote “The Giver.” Last year she published “Son,” which finishes the Giver Quartet. Robert Sabuda, who is a pop-up book writer, designer and a paper engineer, will also be at the festival. Both, according to Short, are masters in their fields and will be giving presentations, including a paper engineering workshop by Sabuda.

“Robert Sabuda is considered the chief paper engineer,” Short said. “He is the most well-known and the most highly-respected paper engineer that’s currently functioning in the field. He publishes several books a year. His books are very complex in terms of the engineering that’s required for the paper.”

as number nine, and so on. It creates symmetry, which outlines the puzzle from the very beginning.

Most puzzle solvers are unaware of all of the tiny details, but Reagle said he has all of these regulations and many more at the forefront of his mind when he sits down to work.

Reagle has mastered the rules, so he can bend them at his command. His motto is “twisted but fair.”

It takes more than time and serendipity for these crosswords to come together.

There are extraordinary coincidences that have made Reagle’s work successful. He said that a harmonic convergence takes

over, and the puzzles frequently come together with persistence.

Reagle said these coincidences and patterns are common, but are interesting enough that TED Talks has approached him in hopes of having Reagle give a presentation on the deeper phenomena of puzzles.

“It’s not just knowledge,” Reagle said.

“It’s thinking outside of the box a little bit.

This, for some reason, is something the brain likes to do.”

Reagle will be a panelist at the Arizona Daily Star tent on Sunday from 10-11 a.m. at the Tucson Festival of Books.

ONE FOR THE BOOKS Tucson Festival of Books brings authors, illustrators, word fanatics to campus to celebrate the importance of literature

tudents who are fans of literature, no matter the genre, will have a reason to spend a few days of spring break on campus. On Saturday and Sunday, the Tucson Festival of Books will take place at the UA, bringing authors both new and old to campus.

The variety of authors and genres at this weekend’s festival is staggering. More than 300 authors are participating in a myriad of different events. The Student Union Memorial Center South Ballroom will host popular featured authors, as it houses 600 people. The Gallagher Theater will be the site of current events authors.

Bill Viner is one of the co-founders of the Tucson Festival of Books and also serves as Chair of the Author’s Committee. As a co-founder, he uses his familiarity with the festival to provide oversight and help manage the event. The Author’s Committee that he heads meets on a monthly basis and consists of various representatives of different genres, from mystery to poetry.

“I think we keep our ear to the ground, and if there’s certain topics that we think would be more popular in Tucson, then we’re certainly

looking to bring those people here,” Viner said.

One of the current trends in what college students are reading today is young adult literature. Indeed, 55 percent of the books sold in this genre, intended for youth under 18, are sold to those over 18. Novels set in dystopian worlds, like “Divergent,” “The Maze Runner” and “The Hunger Games,” are popular with this age group.

“I think the same authors popular with college students are popular with the general public,” Viner said. “The adults have moved to the young adult literature. How many people have read ‘Harry Potter’?”

Readers interested in mystery and thriller genres may recognize some attending authors, including Scott Turow, one of the foremost legal thriller writers in the country and the author of “Innocent” and 2013’s “Identical.” In addition, three recipients of the Edgar Award, given for top mystery book of the year, will be present. The three recipients, Steve Hamilton, T. Jefferson Parker and Thomas Perry, will discuss the impact of the award on their writing careers in Manuel T. Pacheco Integrated Learning Center room 120 on Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Several UA alumni will also present at the festival, including Richard Russo, who earned his bachelor’s degree, MFA and doctorate at the university. His Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “Empire Falls” was published in 2002. HBO adapted the novel into a two-part mini-series for which Russo wrote the teleplay, starring Ed Harris, Helen Hunt and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Television producer Rebecca Eaton will also make an appearance this weekend. She serves as executive producer of PBS’s “Masterpiece” series (previously known as “Masterpiece Theatre”), which

has brought the world such series as “Downton Abbey” and “Sherlock.” Eaton will be a part of numerous events revolving around her book “Making Masterpiece: 25 Years Behind the Scenes at Masterpiece Theatre and Mystery! on PBS.” Apart from well-known names, a number of fresh faces in the literary world will also be in attendance.

“We’re looking to bring as many feature authors as we can, but also we’re looking at emerging authors, authors that just have a good story to tell that might not be on everybody’s New York Times Best Seller List,” Viner said.

Author and festival guest Anthony Marra’s first book, “A Constellation of Vital Phenomena: A Novel,” was published in May 2013. Festival guest Kevin Kwan is also a first-time novelist, whose book, “Crazy Rich Asians,” was published by Knopf Doubleday in June 2013. These two tenderfoots will join Ishmael Beah and Anthony De Sa for the “Delving into Fiction: Debut Novels” event. For students who are interested in the impact of having a first novel published, this may prove to be an invaluable event.

The festival regularly draws more than 100,000 guests, but as it takes place the first weekend of spring break, many students may have already left town.

“We’d certainly like as many of the student population to attend,” Viner said. “Start your spring break a day late. At least come to the book festival on one day, because it’s something you may never experience again.”

On Sunday at 2:30 p.m., Michaud will partner with chef Massimo Tenino from the Tavolino Ristorante Italiano as the two make Michaud’s book come to life by cooking some of their own Italian specialties.

Capping off the Mexican cuisine is the “Modern Southwest” demonstration set for 10 a.m. Sunday. Chefs Ryan Clark and Justin Morrow will explore recipes from Clark’s latest cookbook, “Modern Southwest Cooking,” showcasing an array of innovative recipes prepared by the author himself.

Chicago restaurant Tru’s chef Rick Tramonto, partnering with chef Antonio Rodriguez of Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort and Spa, is set to host a demonstration at 11:30 a.m. Sunday exploring the recipes of Tramonto’s cookbook, “Steak with Friends.”

Sunday at 1 p.m., Liz Neumark, CEO and founder of New York’s top catering company, Great Performances, will delve into some of her favorite recipes from her newest cookbook, “Sylvia’s Table: Fresh, Seasonal Recipes from Our Farm to Your Family.”

The final culinary event of the weekend is the “True Food” discussion at 4 p.m. on Sunday, presented by Dr. Andrew Weil of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, Sam Fox from Fox Restaurant Concepts and executive chef Michael Stebner from True Food Kitchen. The talk will highlight simple foods that are seasonable and sustainable.

Though books may be the main draw of this weekend’s festival, guests won’t go hungry.

While there will be plenty happening on campus, Tucson also has unique spots to experience outside of the festival. Here are five places to visit during your trip to the Old Pueblo.

Gates Pass

Why go? Relax in a nature triad of hiking, sunset views and stars.

This winding, scenic road was built in 1883 by pioneer Thomas Gates, who wanted a path through the Tucson Mountains; finding no shortcut, Gates decided to build one. During the day, climb the hills up to a little stone shack.

At night, stop in one of the lookout spots for endless stargazing. In the time between? Catch Tucson’s saguaro-silhouetted sunsets from one of the best spots in town. To get there, take Speedway Boulevard west and you’ll reach a destination surrounded by mountains, saguaro and ocotillo cacti.

This summit to the west of “A” Mountain boasts one of the best views of the city. A paved path leads to the south of the Tucson Mountains. The short, steep climb to the top is an ideal spot to view the Tucson valley and mountain ranges.

Wildcats leave Utes fearful and loathing LUKE DELLA LAS VEGAS — Arizona’s defense didn’t miss a note against the conference’s best offense on Thursday.

The No. 1 Pac-12 Conference tournament-seeded Wildcats rolled past No. 8 Utah to a sound of 71-39 in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 tournament.

After a tight start to the game, the Wildcats (29-3, 15-3 Pac-12) held the Utes nearly scoreless for 10 minutes into the first half.

During that time span, Arizona took a 16-point lead before the Utes (21-11, 9-9) scored again.

But Arizona never looked back.

Utah’s total of 39 points is the fewest points scored by a team in the conference tournament.

“We had, obviously, an excellent defensive day,” Arizona head coach Sean Miller said. “I thought Utah might have missed some shots they normally make. For the most part, we tried to make the game hard-earned on that end of the floor, and it was one of our best defensive efforts of the season.”

Three of Utah’s top scorers, Dallin Bachynski, Delon Wright and Jordan Loveridge, combined to score 16 points on 4-21 shooting from the field.

Bachynski’s nine points led the way for the Utes.

“We tried,” was all Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak could say when asked about his leading scores struggles.

“You can’t have that kind of production against Arizona and expect to be sitting here feeling anything other than the way we feel.”

The key to Arizona’s defensive success was stopping the pick-and-roll.

On Feb. 19 in Salt Lake City, the Wildcats barely slipped by the Utes 67-63 in overtime.

What worked well for Utah in that game didn’t work Thursday.

The Utes’ pick-and-roll was nonfunctional on Thursday, and they were limited to tough and uncomfortable shots.

“They just pressured us outside and disrupted our offense and gave us shots that we didn’t really want to take,” Utah guard Princeton Onwas said.

Arizona pressured and pushed Utah guards out of the lane and made it difficult for the Utes to swing the ball across the court.

Wright, Utah’s leading scorer during the season, was held to just five points — his lowest scoring output in a single game this season. Wright shot 1-8 from the field and made three of his five points at the freethrow line.

“When we’ve got a guy like Delon Wright coming off of a pick-and-roll, you’ve got to worry about him at first,” Arizona point guard T.J. McConnell said.

LAS VEGAS — Pac-12 Conference tournament No. 1 seed Arizona men’s basketball team will face off against No. 5 Colorado in the semifinals Friday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.

Arizona won Thursday’s first game against eighth-seeded Utah in dominating fashion, routing the Utes by a score of 71-39 and giving the starters some rest in the process.

As one of the top four teams, the UA enjoyed a first round bye and did not have to play on Wednesday, unlike Colorado.

Colorado, fresh off of a 59-56 victory over No. 4 California, has defeated the No. 12 USC Trojans and the Golden Bears in the tournament.

Arizona fans flocked to Las Vegas to cheer on their team, creating a familiar environment for the Wildcats. Head coach Sean Miller said that the crowd plays a huge part in the UA’s momentum.

“Knowing we have as many fans who have traveled the way we have to Vegas, you almost feel like it’s your obligation to perform well and advance for them, for their efforts,” Miller said. “Just hearing our crowd [on Thursday], I would imagine it’s only going to pick up moving toward [Friday].”

Arizona swept Colorado in its two conference matchups this year. In Arizona’s first contest against CU in Tucson, the UA struggled to shoot from the perimeter and squandered a 14-point lead, allowing Colorado to close the gap.

The Wildcats won in Boulder, Colo., in a blowout that boosted Arizona’s confidence on the road.

After the Wildcats’ doubleovertime loss to ASU the week before, Arizona rebounded to defeat the Buffaloes in Boulder for the first time since 1973.

“One of the things that gives us confidence in this setting is our success away from home and [the] fact that we have been battle-tested,” Miller said. “We’re going to have our hands full, but we’re just excited that we are one of the four teams remaining in the tournament.”

What to watch for:

Colorado’s sophomore forwards Josh Scott and Xavier Johnson have given Arizona trouble before this season.

In the Buffaloes’ first contest against the Wildcats, Johnson and Scott combined for 36 points and 13 rebounds.

Junior guard Askia Booker is averaging 10.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.5 boards per game this year against the UA. Over his first two games in this year’s Pac-12 tournament, Booker averaged 19 points and 3.5 assists per contest.

In the quarterfinals against California, he put together a 17-point performance to accompany three assists and three rebounds.

In the Buffaloes’ win over the Golden Bears, Johnson contributed 10 points and eight boards. Johnson is averaging 13 points and four rebounds per game against the

A former Wildcat basketball great, now an accountant and author, will be speaking at the Tucson Festival of Books this weekend.

Bob Elliott played for Arizona from 1973-77 and will give an hour-long talk about his new book, “Tucson a Basketball Town” on Sunday at 1 p.m. in room 130 of the Manuel T. Pacheco Integrated Learning Center.

Elliott, along with local sportswriter Steve Rivera, will be discussing the book and the rise of UA hoops in Tucson with former Wildcats associate head coach Jim Rosborough.

At Arizona, Elliott was a three-time athletic and academic All-American and averaged 18.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game combined in his four-year college career. After being chosen in the second round as the 42nd overall pick in the 1977 NBA Draft by Philadelphia, he played three seasons with New Jersey from 1978-81.

Today, he works as an accountant for his firm, the Robert A. Elliott Accounting Group. The Daily Wildcat spoke with Elliott about Arizona basketball heading into March Madness.

Daily Wildcat: It was played at noon on a day at the office for you, so watching Arizona’s 7139 domination over Utah on Thursday was obviously tough. But from what you were able to see, what impressed you most about the Wildcats?

Elliott: I was very impressed with their performance; they were hitting all cylinders. You could see that they understood what they needed to do and they were having fun doing it.

Q&A

The UA has a lot of doubters heading into the NCAA Tournament because it lost Brandon Ashley earlier in the season. Based off of your prior experience as a player, how much will losing a key starter like that affect a team’s chances of winning it all?

One of the things they’ve had all year long is chemistry, and so they had to figure out how to replace an important person like Brandon. You have to keep the chemistry going,

and I think they’ve found it now.

Your new book is mainly about what Arizona basketball was roughly four decades ago. What ultimately made you want to do a project like this?

The reason for the book is to bring out an era of basketball that I don’t think has been talked about as much as it should. It talks about Arizona becoming a basketball school, Tucson becoming a basketball town and the process of how that evolved. … I get this one comment from people all the time [as feedback from the book]: “I didn’t know that.”

What’s the most exciting part about having this book published for you, personally? Are there any butterflies you have speaking about it in public?

As for writing the book, it’s a whole new adventure. I’ve never done anything like this. I have taught classes at the university before, so I’m hoping this is more of an interactive session and not a lecture; that’s not my style. I’ll have what they call my own one-hour Oprah moment.

Baseball opens Pac-12 play ROSE ALY VALENZUELA Arizona baseball commences Pac-12 Conference play against Washington State at home Friday night in its 20th game of the season.

Last season, Arizona (10-9) won the series against Washington State, dropping the first game and winning the last two in Pullman, Wash. The Cougars (4-8) will visit Arizona after a 5-3 loss to Texas State on March 8.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Arizona had trouble with its offense in some of its previous games, but sophomore leadoff batter Scott Kingery has been efficient in getting Arizona’s offense started. The sophomore has been on base 56 percent of time and leads Arizona with a batting average of .441. “[Kingery] has done a good job [as the leadoff batter],” head coach Andy Lopez said. “I’m really happy for him [and] for us. I like having a guy like that.”

According to Lopez, the lineup has come together better than it was before; he said seven out of the nine spots make him feel confident.

Arizona’s offense improved just in time for the start of Pac-12 play.

“I think we’re heading in the right direction right now,” Kingery said. “I think we’re starting to find our stroke, we’re figuring out what our roles are on the team and we’re executing better.”

Arizona leads Washington State in the overall series record, 32-18.

The last series win for WSU was a three-game sweep at home in 2009.

The last series the Cougars won in Tucson was in 2006, when Arizona only won one game of the series.

Arizona’s ace, James Farris (31), will return to the mound after pitching eight-plus innings on March 7 with seven strike outs, eight hits and three runs allowed.

Farris pitched the second game of the series last season when Arizona defeated WSU 6-5. In that game, the senior pitched 7.1 innings, allowing four hits and two runs.

Friday, Farris returns to face the Cougars again, but this time as the Friday night guy.
