“Habemus Papam!”
“We have a Pope!”
“Habemus Papam!”
“We have a Pope!”
With these words, Robert Francis Prevost, our brother Augustinian from our own Province, was announced to the world as Pope Leo XIV I was in the staff lounge during lunch, having been told that white smoke was seen coming from the Sistine Chapel, a sign that a new Pope had been selected With the announcement, the assembled group erupted in joyful noise - screaming, crying, kneeling, hugging
As “Cardinal Bob,” Pope Leo joined us for Mass, personal remarks and a “meet and greet” last August in the Providence Chapel. He kindly and warmly greeted all those who were present “Regular Bob” (prior to becoming a priest, bishop, cardinal and now Pope) was a year ahead of me in the seminary We both attended high school at St Augustine Preparatory Seminary just outside Saugatuck, MI We then went on to Villanova University, and were reunited in our study of Theology at Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park.
“Father Bob” started as the Vocation Director for our province and lived on campus right here at Providence Catholic (1986-87) The school gave him a farewell celebration when he left He has visited us several times in his career; he often stayed in our friary when he visited his brother, John, who lives in New Lenox I hope and pray that, sometime during a return trip to Chicago in the future, he stops by to visit us again. Let’s pray for him in his new role as our Good Shepherd! And that is not the end of the excitement at Providencethe Providence Dance Team brought home a championship trophy from their Illinois State Competition!
In fact, we will feature the Dance Team on the front cover of the next edition - our Annual Report - to highlight their accomplishment. It’s a nice problem to have when you have two incredible moments that deserve a feature - like a state championship team and the election of a Pope who once called PC home!
As you will read, the past six months have provided a whirlwind of excitement. From the historic moment of one of our own being elected Pope to the incredible achievement of our Dance Team, these events remind us of the remarkable community we’re part of - one rooted in Truth, Unity, and Love Whether making history on a global stage or claiming a state title through hard work and heart, Providence Catholic continues to shine. May we carry that same spirit of pride and purpose into all that lies ahead
May God bless the Providence Family!

We are honored and overjoyed to share the historic news that Cardinal Robert Prevost - Chicago-area native, current Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, and a cherished guest of Providence Catholic - has been elected as the next pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV
Pope Leo XIV is the first North American in the history of the Catholic Church to be elected to the papacy, marking a moment of profound significance for the Church in the United States and around the world
His visit to Providence Catholic in August 2024, during which he celebrated a special Mass for our Celtic community, makes this announcement all the more meaningful to us
He is also the first Augustinian pope!
We join the global Catholic community in prayer and thanksgiving as we welcome Pope Leo XIV and look ahead with hope and faith
Above and right: Something special happened on June 14 at Guaranteed Rate Field and the Augustinians were at the heart of it! They joined thousands of fellow Catholics to celebrate the legacy of Pope Leo XIV on a beautiful Saturday afternoon with Father Merkelis, where he concelebrated Mass with Cardinal Cupich.

Reflecting on the history of Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, it’s clear that its evolution has been one of bold vision, resilience, and faith Originally founded as a co-institutional high school by the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of Providence, the school quickly transitioned into a co-educational model - something rare in the Chicagoland area at the time.
In its early years, Providence faced significant challenges, including the risk of closure. It was through the combined efforts of Brother Daniel (the principal at the time), along with dedicated parents, students, and faculty that the school survived. Fundraising was essential to keeping the doors open In response to this critical need, Bishop Blanchette appointed Fr Roger Kaffer - then principal of St Charles Seminary in Romeoville and a family friend - as the new principal of Providence
Fr Kaffer wasted no time in expanding fundraising efforts and building essential facilities to help the school compete with others in the region He introduced a bus service, worked with the Sisters of Providence to upgrade academic offerings that aligned more closely with a college preparatory curriculum, and added girls' sports programs By 1975, enrollment had grown from 490 to 785 students
Declining vocations created staffing challenges across diocesan schools, so Bishop Blanchette and Fr Kaffer explored the possibility of inviting a religious order to take over the school’s administration The Benedictine Sisters and Irish Christian Brothers expressed interest, but it was ultimately the Augustinians who were chosen in 1984 to lead the school.
One of their first acts was to officially change the name of the school to Providence Catholic High School. The Augustinians brought with them a wealth of experience, having already managed schools like Mendel Catholic and St Rita in Chicago, as well as other prestigious Catholic institutions across North America In 1984, a team of three Augustinian priests was assigned to work with Fr Kaffer during the transition year By the fall of 1985, the Augustinians assumed full administrative control That same year, Fr Kaffer earned his Ph D , was appointed pastor of the Cathedral parish, and was named Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet
One of the first objectives of the Augustinian administration was to bring Providence in line with their elite college preparatory standards They secured accreditation from the North Central Association, which initiated a five-year cycle of in-depth evaluations involving every facet of school life: curriculum, staff, facilities, parental involvement, and more.
Administrative improvements followed swiftly Monthly meetings with department chairs were established to ensure crossdepartmental communication. Teachers, regardless of experience, were now required to submit lesson plans, and a system of “scope and sequencing” was implemented to unify course content and structure across classrooms. This not only streamlined instruction but also provided a clear roadmap for new teachers. Departments were tasked with reviewing and refining course offerings to align with college-readiness, and identifying embedded skills like organization, causeand-effect reasoning, and categorization
Advanced Placement (AP) courses we promoted, growing from just two offerin to over twenty, including five in soc studies College counseling was introduce and the number of graduates pursui higher education rose from 55% consistently above 90%
Fr Kaffer often remarked that he sa Providence as his parish, a sentiment th shaped much of the school’s spiritual li The Augustinians embraced and expand this vision by creating a pasto department, led by one of their priests. Th department oversees school Masses, pray services, and daily student-led reflection h l ff d
requirement for student service hours and solidified the Kairos retreat program, offering every senior - and select junior leaders - a transformative spiritual experience.
In the late 1980s, a student club program was launched. Today, over 30 clubs offer students a range of opportunities, including numerous service-focused groups like AYM and Habitat for Humanity. The “Sandwich Patrol” is a favorite - students gather to make lunchmeat sandwichesfor local shelters Athletic programs also saw major growth during this time
To support this expansion, advisory boards were formed for finance, fundraising, and facilities A development office - now called the Advancement Office - was established to coordinate events and foster parent and alumni engagement Two computer labs were introduced under the supervision of an Augustinian priest Now, a full tech staff supports the school’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program
As national emphasis on STEM grew and enrollment surged to around 1,200 students, it became clear that the school’s two science labs were insufficient. The Augustinians led a capital campaign through the Advancement Office to build a new science wing. Completed in 2002, the wing includes seven classrooms, a music room, and a varsity locker room - all fully air-conditioned.
Other campus improvements followed A gravel parking lot was added with help from the local gas company, and two parcels on Gougar Road were purchased for future use as sports fields or additional parking. The transportation fleet, once just three buses in the Kaffer era, now serves not only Providence students but also other schools and organizations.
Most recently, the Brown Commons was constructed. This state-of-the-art cafeteria can comfortably seat students and be sectioned off for meetings and banquets It also houses a spirit shop for students, parents, and alumni
The school envisioned by the Christian Brothers and Sisters of Providence, nurtured under Fr Kaffer’s pastoral spirit, has been transformed into an elite Augustinian preparatory institution Under the current leadership of Fr Merk, Providence Catholic High School continues to grow, guided by the enduring values of Truth, Unity, and Love Bishop Blanchette and Fr Kaffer made a wise and forwardthinking decision in entrusting the school to the Augustinian Order I feel truly blessed to have witnessed and been a part of this remarkable journey.

Dear Friends of Providence Catholic,
As you reach the final pages of this magazine, I hope you have been reminded of what makes our Augustinian and Providence community so strong. Whether we’re celebrating the election of Pope Leo XIV, our State Champion Dance Team, or simply celebrating everyday moments of service, scholarship, and faith, these stories reflect the strength of a student body and community shaped by our Augustinian values
It is our shared mission – of Augustinians around the world – to form young people in the spirit of Truth, Unity, and Love That mission is grounded in the Augustinian tradition of education, where faith and learning
come together to shape not just minds, but hearts It is a tradition that began when the Augustinians arrived to lead Providence Catholic, a pivotal moment captured beautifully in the article “The Augustinian Era”. The Augustinians’ arrival marked a renewed commitment to the spiritual and intellectual formation that continues to define Providence Catholic today.
And our Augustinian story is still being written. As Pope Leo continues to live and witness to his Augustinian spirituality on a global stage, we too will live our Augustinian spirituality in our communities, our classrooms, and our neighborhoods
Whether you are a student, parent, graduate, or long-time supporter, please know how grateful we are for your ongoing connection to Providence and the Augustinian Order The impact of this school extends far beyond our
campus, through the lives and leadership of those who carry its values with them May the coming months bring you rest, renewal, and a continued sense of pride in all that we are building together

“My favorite teacher, who I noticed would always lend a helping hand or stay after to speak with each of his students. Father Rich taught me about the meaning of faith, using complex similes and metaphors. Even after leaving Providence, he always told me ‘If you need some faith, reach out.’ Thank you for everything, Father Rich.” -Nick Bertucci

“We were inspired to give after we saw the a g being pulled for the 2024/2025 school year. Our first thought was that all of these kids would have to move to another school This could turn into a very negative and traumatic experience for these students! We wanted to make sure that each one of these students had the opportunity to graduate from Providence Catholic; we wanted to make sure that every child has the same opportunity as ours did.
We feel the staff at Providence cares about every student and always has their best interest at heart. The smaller class sizes, religious experience, and family atmosphere sets Providence apart from other schools in the area.
We would always recommend Providence Catholic The education, friendships, and experiences our children received at Providence will be with them the rest of their lives All three of our children received scholarships to college, with the help and guidance from the Providence staff. Two have graduated college and are out in the workforce, while the third is currently finishing up her junior year of college.”
Life in unpredictable, and sometimes families need a little assistance We established the Celtic Godparent Fund as emergency financial aid for students facing unexpected hardship, like the loss of a parent or household income By contributing to this fund, you become a Celtic Godparent and anonymously provide relief to these families that don’t want to lose their place at Providence in addition to their emergency
We are expanding awareness of this fund here by incorporating a benefit for it at our Hall of Fame induction. For more information, contact Steve Cardamone, Director of Institutional Advancement, at (815) 717-3164.
“We are inspired to support the St Monica Fund because we believe that all children should have the opportunity to have a quality education rooted in faith. This fund provides a role so that students have access to resources and opportunities to grow academically and spiritually Providence is a place with a nurturing, family-oriented environment that fosters both spiritual and academic excellence, supported by dedicated and loyal teachers who consistently go above and beyond to ensure the success and growth of their students ”
