LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

a program that powerfully influences so many lives (students, staff, AND families) In reflecting on these blessings, I was reminded how I made my way to Providence.

The Augustinians had just arrived at Providence in 1984, placing an “advance team” at the school The selection of Providence over other schools which the Augustinians were considering (Lafayette, IN and Springfield, MO were the other sites) was significant; it kept us in range of the majority of our apostolates in Chicago, Wisconsin and Michigan

Let Us Pray...

I am at Providence Catholic because of Kairos!

By that, I mean the retreat as well as by the Providence of God.

I recently celebrated my 200th Kairos retreat! I have been so blessed to be part of

Prior to this, I had been approached to do high school work When the provincial (our boss) asked me what I wanted to do in my future work, my only response was, “Just keep me out of high school.” At the time, I was working at an inner-city parish in St. Louis, MO. A friend of mine who had been stationed at PCHS asked me to consider high school work, and I was skeptical He invited me to attend a Kairos retreat I went

I was amazed! The retreat was as powerful as the retreat I made prior to my priesthood

ordination The sense of community, the honesty, the courage of the leaders who shared their life stories, the obvious spirituality, and the fun -I was sold! I returned for the last Kairos of the 1987-88 school year and began my own ministry at Providence in August of 1988

I am blessed to have worked with several talented and dedicated Kairos directors: Randy Stelter, Judy Orler, Elaine O’Connor and Catherine Klod. I am fortunate to share the Kairos ministry with current co-directors Melissa Sallade and Paul Ickes. My friend Annie Persicketti helps prepare the student prayers and coordinates the closing ceremony And I have a profound sense of gratitude for having worked with John “Señor” Sosnowski, who has been my friend over our 20 years of shared ministry

The new Charlie, adorned with the Augustinian Crest and the iconic Celtic kilt, aims to set Providence apart, foster community ties, and enhance enrollment.

At the Varsity Boys Basketball Senior Night on February 5, Director of Institutional Advancement Steve Cardamone unveiled the updated Charlie Celtic mascot costume, symbolizing spirit, courage, and Celtic pride Alumnus Ryan Hill '97 invested in the reinvented Charlie to boost school spirit, connect PCHS alumni in a deeper way, energize prospective students and be an ambassador to the community Ryan, who was Charlie in the '90s, believes in the mascot's role as an ambassador and recalls many memorable moments building spirit and bringing people together as Celtics

“I had a blast,” he says “During my time, the Charlie role was limited to football games or an occasional basketball game, so it was fun to get the crowd all fired up and clown around I liked that you get to act a little out of character and it’s ok Everyone expects the mascot to be silly, but you still have to be an ambassador and represent the entire faculty, staff, and student body respectfully It’s an important job ”

You’ll see Charlie at many events throughout the year, from recruiting events, Men’s/Women’s Club events, athletic events, Open House and more

Charlie will eventually be able to venture off campus and represent PCHS and our Celtic community all within the Augustinian spirit of Truth, Unity and Love

From a historical perspective, Charlie originally came to be in the 1970s. The Men’s Club held a contest, and senior Ed Olstza won the opportunity to become the school’s mascot or “Charlie ” For the next 40-plus years Charlie has been a part of the fabric at PCHS and the new “look” will carry us into the future as new students carry the torch forward

As for Ryan’s best memory while portraying Charlie? “We had a football game at Memorial stadium against Joliet Catholic,” he says “I started the ‘Gimme a C, C! Gimmie an E, E,’ chant and totally forgot the L in Celtics Being in the mascot costume was the saving grace as everyone thought it was planned. It was not! I just got caught up in the moment and had a brain freeze, but that’s the beauty of the mascot –everyone just cheered louder!”

Becoming part of the Celtic family means finding a second home - but family is found in our grade school roots. At St. Joseph Grade School Manhattan, the opponent forfeited due to a player shortage on 8th grade Spirit night - and 10+ St. Joe's alumni stepped up to play against the boys so they could have their special moment as 8th graders! Several of the alumni are Celtics, including Nicky Pecho, Brian Pilon, Danny Pilon, Eli O'Neill, Anthony Brach, Dom Alberico and Luke Holman

Franklin R. Parker 92 was sworn in as the Franklin R. Parker 92 was sworn in as the 19th Assistant Secretary of the Navy for 19th Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs on January Manpower and Reserve Affairs on January 18, 2023. He is responsible for the oversight 18, 2023. He is responsible for the oversight of manpower and reserve component affairs of manpower and reserve component affairs of the DON, including the full spectrum of of the DON, including the full spectrum of policy and programs for military (active policy and programs for military (active duty, reserve, retired), their families and the duty, reserve, retired), their families and the civilian workforce. civilian workforce.

He has an impressive resume, which you may find online via the QR code below.

Since his days at Providence Catholic, Parker has lived a life of service to his country and when asked what the greatest aspect of his position is, he is clear: “Serving a great mission - supporting our Sailors, Marines, and Department of the Navy Civilians - and working with a great team of professionals and quality individuals ”

He is one of four Assistant Secretaries entrusted with overseeing a portion of the Department of the Navy's operations Reflecting on his career trajectory, he acknowledges the privilege of collaborating with exemplary leaders along the way

“More than any one word of advice they may have shared, I have learned most from the examples they provided of how they empowered and developed their people, including me,” says Parker “Take pride in your work and give your best effort in all you do. There is no downside to excelling at the task at hand, and that will only position you better for other opportunities you may desire. Also, be compassionate in your dealings with others even when it may be difficult. We often underestimate the impact of our actions on others, but even seemingly small things can have a profound effect on someone.”

Parker first came to the Department of the Navy (which includes the Navy and Marine Corps) as a civilian attorney with the Navy Office of the General Counsel (OGC) “Many

support and leadership roles with our military services,” he says “My father and other family members had served in the military, and I always had a strong interest in public service and national security After practicing law for several years at law firms in San Francisco, Silicon Valley and in Washington DC, I eagerly jumped at the chance to do so in the public interest when I received the opportunity to serve as Special Assistant to the General Counsel of the Navy in 2009.”

“I have been privileged to participate in numerous efforts that I believe have made a positive difference in the lives of others. From humanitarian efforts such as supporting the development of a long term restoration and recovery plan for the U S Gulf Coast followi the Deepwater Horizon oil spill during my fir tour with the department; to policy efforts suc as participating in the work to open all remaining military positions to women in my second; to our current work supporting menta health and quality of life improvements for ou Sailors and Marines and promoting a Nationa Call to Maritime Service, whether military or civilian service, my work with the Departmen of the Navy has provided me an unparalleled opportunity to serve others, for which I am deeply grateful ”

In discussing his service and the individuals he has encountered throughout his journey, Parker emphasizes the paramount significance of values and character.

“Every leader is different and there is no one leadership style that is the best or most effective one in all situations. However for me, a few things do stand out in a strong leader. One is an ability to listen. Leaders often are praised for their oratory skills and charisma, but a powerful - and powerfully underratedskill of many great leaders is the ability simply to listen This ability to listen can expand a leader's awareness of present and emerging issues as well as possible avenues for addressing them Listening is also essential to understanding and unlocking the potential of multifaceted teams comprised of individuals with varying skills and abilities Perhaps the most notable quality to me, however, is the ability to demonstrate compassion for others in pursuit of an ultimate objective The best leaders realize that each individual is an end in themself and not solely a means to an end Compassionate leaders are better able to generate the trust, loyalty and buy-in necessary to achieve larger goals and positive outcomes These leaders also understand that in order to get the most out of our people, we must invest in them and their ell being be ond onl

After so many years serving others, one might wonder what advice he has for those beginning their careers in any field

“Some of the most impactful messages they shared with me were words of quiet encouragement when I needed it most or a well-timed expression of their faith that I was up to the task at hand -- which undoubtedly meant more to me than they could know,” Parker says. “However, if asked for one specific piece of advice, one that often comes to mind for me is a comment a mentor once made to me that I have shared with many of my own mentees since. That comment was, ‘Never be afraid to take a tough job.’ As my mentor explained it, and as I since learned as well, often taking a difficult job can provide you with experience and visibility that opens doors for future opportunities you may desire later in your career ”

I proudly reiterate that our guiding principals at Providence Catholic are the Augustinian Values of Truth, Unity and Love. That means we CANNOT leave a Celtic behind. Greetings, Providence Family! It has been a delightful year, with so much to celebrate In addition to continued excellence in various areas, we have enjoyed some exciting changes, additions, and new priorities Providence became the special place it is by dedicating time, effort, and resources over the decades to continuous improvement, and we remain committed to reflection and evolution.

Our counseling department has focused on adding information and opportunities for students interested in careers in the trades We remain a college prep high school and prepare all students for college as an option but wish to serve those students considering alternative paths as well.

In the second year of an annual curriculum review process initiated last year, we have new offerings next year we are eager to share The PE department has a new Sports Officiating class in which students can get certified and start working as officials in various sports. The music department is thrilled to offer a Guitar class, and we have an addition to our AP offerings with the new AP Pre-Calculus course We transitioned our Accounting class into a more comprehensive and exploratory Intro to Business class, and added STEM options of Drafting, 3D Design, and Engineering Concepts I greatly appreciate the dedication and open-minded approach our department chairs and their teachers have displayed in reviewing and updating course offerings.

We evolved our Student of the Month program from a lunch with the Principal to a breakfast with the teachers, students, and parents, and we received enthusiastically positive support from all Hopefully you have seen the promotions and social media posts celebrating our incredible students.

The administration initiated a new service option with eight monthly visits during the school day to the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Joliet The student response was tremendous, and their performance on the service days was exemplary It was wonderful to see kids having fun and experiencing the satisfaction and joy found in working together and serving others.

Our International Student program continues to enrich our community, and we currently have nine students enrolled from abroad We are also running summer international trips; last summer more than 20 students traveled to England and France, and this summer we have one group headed to Peru and another to Greece, with a proposal for summer 2025 already submitted.

On a note of more mixed emotions, we will recognize the retirements of three incredibly dedicated Providence staff members at the end of the year Mary Colbert, Moira Olivetti, and Mary Beth Harris are retiring. They are all graduates of Providence and have a combined 94 years of service to PCHS. We are happy for them and grateful for their devotion to Providence, but they will be deeply missed

As you can tell, there is much to be proud of and grateful for and the future is undeniably bright!

Becauseofyou, in the last four years, our journey has been marked by incredible transformations in our classrooms, fine arts spaces, campus infrastructure, and beyond. This is a special campaign; an opportunity for departments to put some wish lists out to the community and see what we can make happen. Together, let's envision and create a future that surpasses our dreams.

... and more! Generous donors have also helped secure a new tractor for the Maintenance Team, resources for the English Department, enhancement of mental health offerings for students, upgrades to the concession stand, and a new 3D printer. And let’s not forget the scholarships that have been funded thanks to gifts beginning at $5 and up!

LETTER FROM THE PROVINCIAL

Another successful school year comes to a close. I hope this magazine finds you preparing for a season of rest, adventure, and continued learning –whether you’re a student, a parent, or an alum.

St. Augustine was a lifelong learner and scholar, and we’re all called to continue learning and growing as Catholics and as members of the Providence Catholic High School community Together, this community has done incredible things over the past academic year: studying hard, competing athletically, growing in faith, serving the community, and making new friendships

Our seniors will soon be going out to share their gifts and talents across the United States, many will become “First Years” again on college campuses

I hope that each of these individuals –no matter where they may be – will always remember the Augustinian Values that their teachers and mentors have instilled in them. We’ll always remember you, Class of 2024.

Personally, I am looking forward to a summer filled with new adventures for our Midwest Augustinian Province, as we continue to develop our Evangelization programs and our Vocation outreach, and continue to serve and support our schools and parishes

As you reflect on this past school year, please take a moment to say a prayer of gratitude for the faculty and staff who make Providence such an exceptional place to be educated

As I’ve said before, these are the people who are the foundation of faith, service, and achievement who serve as a reminder of what we can accomplish together as an Augustinian community. May God's blessings continue to guide you and keep you this summer.

Very Rev. Anthony B. Pizzo, O.S.A. Prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians

Providence Catholic celebrated the beginning of Catholic Schools Week with Mass, and with a focus on community. Fr. Tom McCarthy, OSA, presided. During his homily, he spoke about the story of Samuel and Eli (https://bible.usccb.org/bible/1samuel/3) and said: "How is God calling you?

As we receive Jesus, He gives us the courage and strength to listen. We are all Samuels, and we are called to be an Eli Be open to how God calls you, and then follow your heart " Are we listening to what God calls us to do? And are we supporting others in their journey of God's calling?
