MAKE PEACE WITH NATURE -- to built a sustainble city

Project location: Luzhi District, Wuzhong District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China Project area: 7km2 Project time: 2023.11 Project goal: Renovation of abandoned industrial areas Project introduction: This project is aimed to revitalize the site into a sustainable, healthy city. It retains most of the unique elements in the urban space while infusing new life. The layout are influenced by local wind patterns, which also integrates varied functional zones for diverse utility. Additionally, a wetland purification park along the riverbank harnesses the terrain to cleanse the river and promote environmental regeneration. I look forward to using this project to fully apply the concepts of eco-cities and self-regenerating cities into future urban design.

UNBUILT AREA 01 GREEN LAND This area is still a pristine land which has not been developed before. The green space along the river bank is a good natural landscape and can be made good use of in design project.

However, these may have bad impacts on the environment, so the reasons for their existence need to be re-evaluated.

The venue has about 85% of people aged 15-64, and 8% of people aged 0-14 and 7% of people aged 65 and over.

FEARURE ANALYSIS There are many dead end highway in the site, so the road system should be well organized. In addition, as the wind blows from southeast to northwest in summer and from northwest to southeast. If there still planned to built industry park, the wind direction should be considered.

The green space is uneven distributed, and there is no complete green space planning system in this area. But there are very good and complete green spaces along the coast, which are very valuable natural resources.

There are two existing roads that cross the entire design area, as well as some relatively regular road in the northwest of this area, both of which can be retained. And there is no well planned road in other place so some new road is needed.

This area is covered by a water network, which is the traditional water network distribution characteristics of Suzhou.

However, many waterways have been destroyed and the water quality has been polluted due to previous industrialization. Therefore reproducing the water system and purifying the water need to be considered.

Building Distribution

The current building distribution is relatively scattered and the functional zoning is also confusing. And most of the buildings are older or have been abandoned. Therefore, it is feasible to demolish these buildings, rehabilitate the land, and then redevelop it.

DESIGN THEORIES

Wetland purification parks, bioswales, and urban farmland are essential in sustainable urban development, each playing a unique role in environmental management and community enrichment.

Wetland parks act as natural water filtration systems, enhancing water quality, supporting wildlife habitats, and offering recreational spaces, crucial in climate change mitigation.

Bioswales, integral for stormwater management, absorb runoff, reduce sewage system load, and filter pollutants, thereby improving water quality and supporting urban biodiversity. Urban farmland, on the other hand, bolsters local food production, cuts transportation emissions, and strengthens food security. It fosters community engagement and contributes to waste management through composting, also enhancing urban residents’ well-being.

Collectively, these elements embody a multifaceted approach to ecological, social, and economic sustainability in urban planning, highlighting the interconnection between environmental health and urban resilience.

MULTIPLE ENGAGING LOOPS

-- Connecting Buildings, Green Open Space, Water System & the Whole Community

Project location: Shuangta, Gusu District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China Project area: 0.014km2 Project time: 2023.06 Project goal: Renovation of abandoned industrial areas Project introduction: Based on the planning of the original 15-minute living loop in the community, this project expands the concept of "loop" from a two-dimensional design to a three-dimensional design - extending from the simple ground floor to the combination of ground and underground and the high altitude between buildings the loop. Among them, the design of the building, such as the sky corridor and roof garden, refers to the LM Youth Community in Shenzhen, and the wetland purification system refers to the purification strategy of Floating treatment wetlands (FTW).This is an innovative design project for the future, which is expected to be implemented in real design in the next ten years.

Suzhou is a famous historical and cultural city. And the regeneration of the old city is also imminent.

Despite the large proportion of the elderly population, there are still many college students and working young people in the region.There are more middle-income people, and people can afford a middle-to-high level of living.

MASTER PLAN The regeneration area is in the red dotted line, and the surrounding area is the analysis area. There are six apartment buildings in the renovation area, and they are connected by sky corridors. On the east side of the apartment building is a public space where residents can exercise. On the south side of the apartment building is a small pond, which provides residents with a place for recreation.

PET-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY -- NODE FACILITY RENOVATION

Project location: Xinlong Lake, Shuangliu District, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, China Project area: 0.14km2 Project time: 2023.09 Project goal: Establish a new pet-friendly comprehensive industrial park Project introduction: Nowadays many people regard pets as part of their family members. And in the future, more and more families will keep pets, and pet-friendly cities are imperative. Therefore, this project adapts to this trend through community micro-transformation. This project build pet facilities at various nodes in the community to increase the petfriendliness of the community. Moreover, through this project, more people will understand the importance of pets to humans, and join the action of caring for stray animals. Additionally, the main colors of this project are blue and yellow.

Because in the cognitive spectrum of pets, blue and yellow are the most conspicuous and bright colors, and they are also one of the few colors that pets can distinguish.

SINGLE YOUNG MAN Most of the single young people who come to Area A of Chengdu Tianfu New Economic Industrial Park work or study here. Young people want the company of pets to relieve their anxiety in their spare time.

PLANNING DETIALS This project was designed from the perspective of pets and their owners, with pet-friendly amenities both outdoors and on the ground floor of the interior.

Outdoor Furniture

There are chairs for dog walkers to rest on, with hooks for pets.

Inside the buildings, this project features pet-friendly shops with floor-to-ceiling windows to allow pets to see the surrounding things. Also, this project designs pet storage points inside and outside the architectures. In addition, pet drinking and feeding facilities on both sides of the street have also been added to the project. Moreover, pet waste recycling points are also considered.

Dog-only Walking Paths

Dog walking paths are distinguished from humans to prevent people who don't like dogs from chasing dogs on sidewalks.

These renovation projects are mainly blue and yellow which pets can distinguish. These small-scale renovations can not only save costs, but also make the community more pet-friendly, attracting more people to settle here.

On the afternoon in fall, the elderly take their pets and take facetime with their children on the community shared lawn. The young man next to them takes his dog for a walk and enjoyed the warmth of the autumn sun.

In the morning, community residents go out to walk their dogs. Some residents tie their pets at the pet storage point outside the door when they go to the supermarket to buy groceries or food. The pets also wait obediently at the door for their owners to come out before they can continue walking together.

On weekends, pet lovers in Chengdu bring their dogs here and gather in these petfriendly restaurants. Some young people even bring their pets here to shop and enjoy this wonderful weekend.

In the evening after get off work, the office workers take their pets to play in the public spaces of the community. The owner of the pet who is tired from playing will sit on the chair to rest, and the pet goes to the pet water fountain on the street to drink water and replenish water.
