PRECEDENT STUDY

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2005 by Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura with Cecil Balmond

The most compelling element at the Serpentine Gallery was the joint. How the LVLs came together, held, and relied on each other was visually stimulating and conceptually intriguing.

The Joint

While the pavilion is free of columns, the undulating roof creates a series of compressive and expanding overhead conditions.

+ The joining of the individually canted pieces creates arches and spans the entire pavilion without internal columns.

It takes four LVLs to lock into place and hold each other up.

Physical model constructed of laser cut chipboard, layered to mimic LVLs. The model was built to understand the joint and mechanics of the Serpentine Pavilion.

The ocean was the most prominent and prominent feature of the park.

As soon as the idea of water being the main feature of the project, the first move made was flooding the entire site and removing the earth therein. Boston has been notorious for claiming more land by building piers or through back filing.

Instead of doing that, flooding the site gives some of that ecosystem back to the ocean.

With the site flooded, platforms were introduced to accommodate both ecosystem and social spaces for human interaction, both with each other and the ocean.

TIED PIER

Tied Pier is the result of the desire to tie the ocean with the North End. The park platforms move along the piles with the tide and the experience is felt at oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feet. The true nature of the ocean is movement and flow; as below, so above.

STUDY MODELS Quick study models followed by a photo montage to discover space through tectonic strategies.

All the models shown here fit inside of a 10â&#x20AC;?x10â&#x20AC;? bounding box. The largest photo proved to be the most interesting study model. Longitudinal boards gives visual length in what felt to me to be an outdoor cafe.

This study model far right felt crazy and all over the place.

What better montage than turning it into a multilevel mall with a courtyard in the middle.

The epicenter or node is further explored with following model

For some reason, with exception to my top model, they all felt to me huge in scale. Here I translated my model into another mall complete with gymnasium and Starbucks

This project is a multi-purposing of elements, e.g. the main wall turns into the stairs, the stairs turns into the ceiling, the ceiling is the structure for the spaces above, the structure for the spaces above turns into the railing, which returns back to the wall.

This modelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s derived from two previous moments pulled from a sketch model that consisted of a similar wall and an element where the lot of sticks seemed to explode from a node. In this model you can see the stairs as the main node that most elements point back, which is my main focal point. In addition, there are secondary nodes created as a result of elements coming together.

PROGRAMING First Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve organized program according to relationship to each other and then I overlapped and combined spaces that could share space due to occupancy time differentials, thus allowing more flexibility in floor plan and square footage limitations.

HYDRA DENDRO PROJECT PROJECT DESCRIPTION Located in Revere, MA across from the Wonderland MBTA Station.

The project is about absorption, retention, and connection. From the scale of the house to the scale of the entire site, water is either stored, filtered, reused, or released back into the environment.

The current site sits at or below sea level and is vulnerable to flooding, the max recorded was 4 feet and the 100 year flood plane sits at about 6 feet. Instead of trying to divert the water or bring in unnecessary fill, which effectively erase the existing marsh, the project stands to unveil the marsh and accentuate itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s characteristics.

WATER TABLE Traditional homes shed water directly to the street and earth. During storms and the raining season this puts strain on the systems, adds waste that discharges to the ocean, which leads to flooding.

Inverting the form so that each building, unit, or home can hold it’s share of water, filter it, store it, and/or re-release the water once strums subsides or systems reach capacity.

Reimagining the flipped traditional form and introducing a flood accepting mudroom when a storm hits hard. This form incorporates a reduced ground level, a water catching, filtering, and a slow realease system.

Slip forming In spirit of keeping costs down, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve chosen to do slip forming concrete, where the forms are only built once and used on all levels until completion. Concrete material is cheap, but labor costs are higher. However, using one contractor on a monolithic mid-rise allows for the insulation, cladding, and finish to all be installed at once instead of bouncing back and forth between three or four different subcontractors. The frame is the finish and less time necessary to be onsite.

Community A key element to a building’s safety is ensuring there’s always someone home. Generally, during working hours shops and commercial leases have a presence during the day and the tenants at night. Active/Passive Systems Integration

Site & Process Architecture Strategy and Relation to Site Located in Manhattan, New York, the Hearst Tower is depicted as a building of significant importance in the city. Having been built after the September 11 attacks, not only is it a symbol of resilience, but it has also been highly recognized for its strategic environmental strategies that have been implemented in the building’s structure and performance. These strategies have yielded to significant financial and environmental benefits.

Built in 2006, it was the first building in the city to receive LEED gold rating. The strategies that were used to achieve this include recycling rain water which controls the air temperature of the atrium, the use of the diagrid frame, which allowed the use of 20% less steel than regular framing, and low emission glazing.

Improved Workspace The tower sits atop the old Hearst Building, which is of art-deco design. The original cast stone was preserved. This building successfully blends the older art deco architecture with the new and modern building. The original building has remained, while the interior space has been gutted to create new and refreshing spaces.

One of Norman Foster’s design goals was to improve the less desirable conditions of the typical work space. The building and program that Norman foster created has become the most ideal work environment. The main lobby is considered an “urban living room” where people are encouraged to gather. This social hub serves the program of the building, as it also serves as a media center, where about 2,000 employees come together daily to share ideas. The high ceilings and numerous windows allow this space to be flooded with light.

The water feature in the space adds to the pleasant work environment. The escalator takes you beside the cascading water where you can ride to the top and glance at the framed city views.

Main structure is made of a diagrid system - a diagonal gridded truss system made up of a series of four story high interlocking triangles.

Hearst Tower became the first building in New York without vertical beam structure, reducing the use of steel by 20%.

Traditional structural frame of a building in New York. It uses a standard beam and column frame.

The diagrid frame of the Hearst Tower uses 20% less steel when compared to a traditional frame. The design of the gridded structural system allows for an almost limitless height of construction.

The frame provides the great stability against lateral, gravity and seismic loads.

The building core is off centered to allow for more floor space and light.

The lowest floors are left open to create large open spaces and maintains the existing facade.

Use the Force AXIAL FORCES

The off centered core, the diagrid, and lower level column and beam all work together to stabilize the building and resist AXIAL FORCES and LATERAL LOADS.

LATERAL LOADS

Gravity Loads

The gravity loads are transfered by the diagrid to the lower levels and then are transfered through the steel columns at the atrium. These â&#x20AC;&#x153;super-diagonalsâ&#x20AC;? give the structure the appearance of floating and also helps to brace and stable the building. In the atrium, the loads are then carried to the exterior walls by steel beams that connect to the superdiagonals.

Steel beams carry gravity loads down within the shell of the original building, which allows light to flood the space.

The Super-diagonals allow for open social space at the lower levels of the building while supporting the structure.

Connection Nodes

The diagrid is constructed with wide flange steel columns and beams then cladded.

Floor Slabs

The composite concrete slab spans from steel beams at the diagrid to the core. The slab also acts as a diaphragm by transferring lateral and axial loads back to the core.

Two Buildings Hearst Towerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enclosure system can be separated into two parts, the glass tower and the brick facade of the original building. The glass tower is a curtain wall of diamond shaped panelized, double glazed, low E glass, hung off a structural diagrid. Its function is to let in natural light, reflect heat, and keep the weather out. The facade boasts 3 mm stainless steel cladding over 80mm sheet-aluminum insulated panels following the diagrid to express the structure since it cannot be exposed. However, the stainless steel cladding doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cover the edges at each floor plate, only every 4 levels are expressed as part of the horizontal members of the diagrid. The lower 6 floors consist of the original structural brick facade.

There are also central air handling units located on the eighteenth �oor, and each �oor contains a temperature control unit and humidity sensor controls. Other than the water reclamation system, the Hearst Tower follows a traditional VAV climate control system, where the steam heats the tower and the water �ows to the fan room.

WATER FEATURE

The water used in this sculptural fountain is harvested. This fountain also cools the air in the atrium lobby.

Water is harvested from the roof. The rainwater that is collected and is used efficiently throughout the whole building.

The water feature was manufactured by DeltaFountains. This system saves the Hearst Tower 1.7 million. It includes two equipment rooms with muliple pump systems. It uses a Reverse Osmosis System that holds 7500 gallons. It uses the rainwater from the roof and uses it for the water feature.

Maintains thermal comfort in the atrium lobby without having to heat the entire 80 ft height. This system is used in the first, second and third floor of the building.

The Megacolumns and super diagonal beams allow for 80â&#x20AC;&#x2122; ceiling heights, allowing the heat to be out of reach from occupancy levels.

The rest of the office floors were outfitted with daylight switching systems only on the east face, where there is a 5-foot-wide circulation corridor abutted by open workstations.
