The Vice Chancellor

One of the unique aspects of Dibrugarh University is that the University was established in a Tea garden fifty one years ago. And in fact, the University has a Tea garden even today on its campus. Assam Tea has a global reputation for its specific attributes. The potential of tea as a beverage for the global market was realised by an English gentleman Robert Bruce in 1823. Subsequently in 1839 the British formed the Assam Tea Company in England with its Head Quarter in Nazira, Assam.

Over the years, Assam Tea carved a very special niche in the world tea market.

Our University started a small Centre - The Centre for Tea and Agro Studies in 2007 for offering short term courses in the general aspects of tea cultivation pertaining to commercial tea clones, agronomy, pest control, soil nutrients, etc. In the recent years the Tea Industry is witnessing an unprecedented interest and demand for Organic Tea and Speciality Tea. This is in view of the established fact that tea has enormous medicinal properties and has definite advantage over the other beverages, mainly Coffee. The large scale application of chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides in the industrial tea estates have been causing serious concern for health and the environment. This explains as to the rising popularity of organic tea and also the speciality tea in recent years. The price fetched by the organic and speciality tea is incomparably high vis- a-vis the price of the regular tea.

The emergence of Small Tea Growers in Assam is a new trend and has great potential. This calls for facilities for professional training in the newer areas of tea processing and production in smaller units with smaller machines, bio-control of pests, organic cultivation, eco-friendly management practices and marketing, etc., besides the aspects of clones, agronomic practices, soil testing for fertilizer application, etc. The Centre for Tea and Agro Studies has come up with the basic infrastructure for catering to these new demands. The Centre has also come up with more realistic market oriented curriculum so as to extend professional training to the students that would enhance their employment possibilities and would also open up possibilities for entrepreneurial ventures in the Small Tea Growing sector with much better market prospects and competitiveness.

As another batch of students are ready with their training and skill from this Centre, we look forward to a new dimension in the tea sector in Assam and beyond. I congratulate the Centre for its wonderful initiatives and wish the graduating students all the best in their future endeavours. .

The Director

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the ninth batch of students, a group of sixteen bright and promising young men and two young women who will complete Post Graduate Diploma in Tea Technology and Plantation Management (PGDTTPM) in the last part of June, 2016. The Dibrugarh University has framed a syllabus in consultation with the tea industry regarding its real and urgent needs with the intention of imparting education/training in the areas of tea technology and plantation management.

I am indeed, pleased to put on record that after undergoing meaningful teaching and training under the able guidance of experts from the Tea Industry and academics as well, almost all passed out students of earlier eight batches have been absorbed till date by major groups like McLeod Russel, Warren Tea, James Warren, Assam Company, Apeejay, APPL, Goodricke, M.K.Shah, Andew Yule, B&A, Assam Tea Corporation etc. and by number of individual tea estates and tea brokers.

Career profile of 18 (eighteen) young students who are available for placement are presented in this Directory and we are sure, you will be interested in looking at them. We shall be glad to arrange for interviews at our campus or at your office according to your convenience.

a cup of TEA can make EVERYTHING happen

A Unique Course

For the first time in Upper Assam, the Tea Industry and Academician has got together to start a course as per the requirement of the Industry. The Post Graduate Diploma in Tea Technology and Plantation Management course aims at grooming aspiring candidates for Tea Estate Management. The Centre for Tea and Agro Studies started in September 2007 in Dibrugarh University with the basic aim of training professionals for the Tea Industry. The course is of one year duration (Two Semesters).

The primary motive of this course was to train prospective candidates who are interested in joining the Tea Industry as Executives. The course has concentrated in giving the most practical exposure to the students to a real-life situation of an Estate rather than mere theoretical knowledge. Therefore every effort has been made to make the students interact with practicing Managers from the Estates as well as with experts from the field of plantation, manufacture, Industrial Relations etc. Effort has been made to send the students from time to time to visit various Estates in Dibrugarh District so that they could practically see for themselves what they have learnt in the class room. The students gain hands-on experience in Soil Testing in the fully equipped laboratory of the Centre, where commercial soil testing for Tea Estate has also started since 2010. Of late, the Laboratory has been accredited by the Tea Board of India.

For the first time, emphasis has been made to impress upon the students that: along with the Basic Knowledge, Communication, Involvement at Work, Energy Management are the key to improving Productivity and Profitability of an Estate which also go a long way in building not only the Industrial Relation but the viability of an Estate. The students have been made to realize how important is their role in contributing to the future of an Estate and the Company.

Moreover, in view of the presently importance of organic tea and machineries for specialty tea production by the small growers, the Centre has introduced the organic cultivation and specialty tea production in the existing syllabus from the last academic session
