Our Approach to

Shaping your Service

The Care Technology Service is for people who have eligible care and support needs under the Care Act and where Care Technology is able to help meet care outcomes in a way that supports the financial sustainability of the Council. Our approach puts the person at the heart of the service, with referrals focussed on the individual’s needs and the outcomes they want to achieve as part of a strengths-based approach to care and support. Key features of the Service include:

• To be considered as part of the ‘first offer’ – in line with a strengths-based approach

• Open-ended length of service

• People will have received an assessment from Adult Social Care and have been determined to have Care Act eligible needs or likely to have them in the near future

• The service can be accessed via a needs and outcomes-based referral form on IAS

• Funded as part of a wider package of support by Leicestershire County Council

Activity Monitoring

Activity monitoring systems use non-obtrusive sensors in a person’s home and can help care professionals complete objective and evidence-based assessments, enabling people to receive the right level of care and support.

Key features of the Service include:

• Data from activity monitoring systems can provide insights to how well people are managing their independence at home 24 hours a day which is not possible using traditional assessment methods

• Using Activity Monitoring for short assessment periods can help to assure families that people are receiving the care and support they need, and may help to avoid unnecessary residential care admissions and ensure home care packages are tailored to the Adult’s needs

Supporting residents of Leicestershire: Their stories

Emma is a young adult with autism, learning disabilities, and anxiety. She has recently transitioned into supported living and is using the Brain in Hand app to navigate and settle into her new accommodation.

Emma faces several challenges related to her conditions. She experiences anxiety when travelling, especially when taking the bus due to crowded spaces, sudden changes, and irregular schedules. Additionally, Emma struggles with managing her emotions and calming herself down during panic attacks.

The app provides her with useful contact information, guidance on using new appliances and security gadgets in her accommodation, and prompting to help her in managing her personal care routines. Emma uses the app to receive reminders about leaving for the bus on time, which helps her manage her anxiety about being too early or late.

James, has autism, anxiety, ADHD, and mental health difficulties, and is using the Brain in Hand app to manage daily living and improve social interactions. James uses the app for emotional regulation and logs his daily emotions using the traffic light system, finding it beneficial for managing well-being and anxiety when in different environments.

James uses the app to note down key points and questions for an upcoming meeting with his social worker to discuss accommodation options as he would like to move to independent living. James is exploring online relationships and has been working with his BIH support worker and the app to discuss options and work through his emotions about this.

Brain in Hand has empowered James to feel more in control of his daily life and progress with opportunities to live independently by being better equipped to handle his mental health. He has been able to use the app to navigate the aim of fulfilling meaningful social and romantic connections, contributing to his journey towards greater independence and well-being.
