HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

ABBREVIATIONS

BF - Beaten Favourite

C - Course winner

D - Distance winner

CD - Course & Distance winner

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WELCOME

As the new Executive Director of Royal Windsor Racecourse, may I welcome you to the first meeting of 2024. We have spent the winter preparing for this big moment and now look forward to bringing you a brand new season of entertainment on the banks of the River Thames.

The calendar will be led in the traditional manner by our ever-popular sequence of themed Monday Nights during May, June, July and August, including 80s Retro Explosion (3 June), Irish Night (10 June) and Abba Party Racenight (1 July). Most of these dates will feature live music on the lawn after racing.

However, some of our top fixtures occupy Saturday slots: the Summer Opening Party featuring BBC Radio 2 DJ Vernon Kay (25 May), Ladies Day (29 June), Gents Evening with Chris Moyles (3 August) and the Summer Closing Party with Sarah Cox (24 August) among the feature events. There are 26 days in total, each with its own distinctive atmosphere.

We will again be staging a round of the fun team competition known as the Racing League on Thursday 15 August and we are particularly excited to bring you the return of jump racing to Windsor on Sunday 15 December - on a totally new circuit - after an absence of two decades

There are numerous raceday packages that you can order in advance from our website including meal deals and stylish arrival at the racecourse by riverboat from the town centre Please visit www.windsor-racecourse.co.uk for full details and all ticket booking information.

It has been the wettest of winters and we are now ready for some vibrant sunshine that will remind us just how much we all love the unique Royal Windsor summer season. As the 2024 programme begins, we wish you a most enjoyable afternoon - highlighted, of course, by a winner or two on the track!

The Racecourse Executive would like to thank our sponsors today.

RACE SUMMARY

Much depends on the state of the ground Provided it’s good or faster, MC LOVEN could be the way to go on the back of his encouraging reappearance fourth in a fairly valuable 6f handicap on the all-weather at Lingfield. On that evidence, this drop back in trip is just what the doctor ordered The Coffee Pod and Maximum Impact won’t mind some give underfoot, a remark which also applies to Irish raider Kendall Roy, while the unexposed Dashing Harry also merits respect.

TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): Alice Haynes (5 wins from 25 runners, 20%) runs JIMMY HENRY

FANCY THAT: P Evans won this race in 2016 and 2019. The stable runs CHALENA and CLAY SHOVELER today.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: KING OF LIGHT trained by K R Burke, Leyburn, 243 miles.

RACE SUMMARY

Karl Burke saddled a newcomer to win this race last year and KING OF LIGHT is another likely-looking type for the yard. Indeed, he fetched €160,000 as a foal and is bred to make a 2-y-o, so the hint should be taken if the market vibes surrounding this colt are upbeat. Fellow newcomer Golden Paradise is marginally preferred to likely improvers Majestic Heights and Jimmy Henry for forecast purposes

RACE SUMMARY

It’s hard to look beyond HARPER’S FERRY, who went close on his sole 2-y-o start and was again narrowly denied on return in a maiden at Doncaster where he pulled well clear of the rest. He is clearly held in high regard (entered in the Dante and Derby) and should take this en route to better things Newcomer Raging Al represents the connections that have foiled the selection on both of his appearances and this son of SeaThe Moon is second choice ahead of Dambuster

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (19-24): R Millman (14 wins from 127 runners, 11%) runs AMAZONIAN DREAM

TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): J Butler (2 wins from 22 runners, 9%) runs BRAZEN IDOL

WEIGHTWATCHER: LEAP ABROAD won off a handicap mark of 87, his rating is now down 6lb to 81.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: AMAZONIAN DREAM trained by R Millman, Cullompton, 149 miles.

AMAZONIAN DREAM signed off last season with a C&D success and, still on a fair mark up 4lb, he may well repeat the dose if fully tuned-up. There are dangers aplenty, headed by Surrey Noir, who will be a danger to all if translating his improved all-weather form to turf, while Tiger Bay will be a live contender if fit enough to do herself justice following nine months off and Under The Twilight, who scored at Salisbury when last seen in October, also has claims

In the hope that the ground continues to dry out, EXPERT AGENT could be the answer to this competitive handicap. RACE SUMMARY

Al Hatab and Upstart Crow were both very progressive last season over further, but have to give plenty of weight away here. Upstart Crow benefits again from his regular pilot’s claim and though better on faster ground has been effective with some cut. Storm Troupour at his peak, warranted plenty of respect facing these conditions, however JAMEELATY should be able to take advantage of her age and sex allowance to get off the mark here.

Progressed well last term winning from 1m2f to 1m5f on good and on the Polytrack. Yet to tackle a trip this short and stable’s runners usually better for an outing. (R9 W3 P2) (OR 61) 2
