Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

HOW TO READ YOUR RACECARD You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

It took a while for connections to get DEXTERITY back to the track following his runner-up effort in a point but he displayed plenty of ability at Perth 3 weeks ago Likely to build on that for his in-form yard, he looks the way to go. Impatient is probably the main danger of those with hurdles form, while Typhoon Flyer and Devon Dude warrant respect given their bumper form

Mental Health Awareness Week

13 - 19 May 2024

MOVEMENT

Racing staff and racecourse staff are wearing green ribbons today to show their commitment to raising awareness and ending the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year is Movement: Moving more for our mental health. Movement is important for our mental health. But so many of us struggle to move enough. Going for a walk in your neighbourhood or around your workplace, putting on your favourite music and dancing around the living room, chair exercises when you’re watching television – it all counts!

Racing Welfare is committed to providing accessible, tailored mental health and wellbeing support services to all of racing’s workforce.

Having shown fair form sent chasing in 2022/23, DYNAMITE KENTUCKY proved that he retains his ability when runner-up at Hexham 23 days ago and he can build on that effort to gain a first success in this sphere. Ballyrashane has been going the right way over fences and isn’t taken lightly, with Aeronisi completing the shortlist
