Best value and simplicity with DiGi Prepaid I Like™

Bollywood Fiesta at the Curve Deepavali or more popularly known as the ‘Festival of Lights’, is celebrated by Hindus all over the world. With Malaysia being a multicultural country, it is no surprise that it is a major festival here and Hindus observe this joyous occasion amidst laughter, lights, dance, delicious traditional fare and, most of all, family and friends. This year, the Curve is paying tribute to this special festival with numerous activities and offers for its patrons. Shoppers will essentially be able to take pleasure in the variety of customs and traditions that are associated with this colourful celebration. Held from October 17 to 27 2008, enjoy a glimpse of ‘Bollywood’ with contemporary dance and music as the Curve has been decorated to resemble a true ‘Bollywood Fiesta’. The Curve’s Fashion Court has also been transformed into an enchanting feast for the eyes with elephant-shaped ornaments and strands of dangling jasmine flowers. Plus, there will be booths providing henna art and tarot card reading. Not forgetting the true symbol of Deepavali, there will also be a uniquely crafted ‘kolam’, a decorative design using rice powder and represents a painted prayer. The ‘kolam’ at the Curve this year has been given special treatment highlighting a majestic peacock. Shoppers will also be able to enjoy attractive promotions courtesy of the Curve. By spending a minimum of RM100 in a single receipt, shoppers will receive a free parrot tarot card reading session or henna hand art tattoo. Shoppers can also opt to receive a packet of delicious homemade ‘Muruku’ courtesy of ‘Ipoh Kacang Putih’. For more information, contact the Curve’s Customers Care at 03- 7710 6868.

It’s a bargain hunting carnival! Around the world, they are called flea markets, shopping bazaars, fairs and so on. Regardless of what else they are known as, these markets are very popular among bargain hunting Malaysians today. And one of the biggest and most popular flea markets is the one at the Curve in Mutiara Damansara. Officially known as the Colourful Street Market at the Curve, it was first started in 2005 and quickly gained recognition as the flea market to visit and shop. It is open every weekend from around 10am till 7pm. The market is located all along the “The Street” section of the Curve and is flanked by a myriad of popular restaurants, cafes and bars. Stepping into “The Street” at the Curve, you will be greeted by the sights and sounds of a colourful carnival-like market. The main thing that makes flea markets popular is the many interesting things you can find there. Here at the Curve’s market, you can find around 80 stalls under colourful canopies selling a wide variety of interesting and unique items that appeal to people of ages. Items on sale ranges from the ubiquitous female and male fashion apparels and accessories, to home décor and ornaments, to handmade greeting cards and baked goods, and much more! Bargain hunters will have a field day at the market for all the items offered are reasonably priced. So whether you are a casual male shopper or a female shopaholic, the sheer variety of items available and the low prices will certainly interest you.

4

Conveniently, there ample parking spaces available in the Curve and the other shopping complexes around it. However, it is still advisable for you to be there early to avoid the crowd and traffic congestion. And for whatever reason that you still do not know how to get to the Curve in Mutiara Damansara, you can get there via the LDP highway, the NKVE through Kota Damansara, the Penchala Link and Damansara Perdana. Situated next to the LDP highway, the Curve is easily spotted just after passing the 1 Utama shopping mall. So do visit the Colourful Street Market at the Curve during the weekends with your family and friends to check out why it is considered by many as one of the best flea markets in Klang Valley, and discover the wonderful world of flea market bargain hunting.

“Items from household ornaments to small trinkets can be found.” According to the Management of the market, the vendors are encouraged to offer unique and quality products at reasonable prices to ensure customer satisfaction. And because of the popularity of the market, many vendors are carefully selected for their unique products, and are rotated to offer new products every month to attract more visitors and get shoppers to come back every week. This unique strategy is working, as evident by the market’s popularity today. One of the coolest things about shopping at the weekend market at the Curve is that there are ample shaded areas for shoppers to rest and cool off in a hot day. And whenever you want to rest over a cool drink or feel like getting a bite, there are many restaurants, bars and cafes around the market for you to pick and choose from. Other than locals, the Colourful Street Market at the Curve is also popular with the tourists for it is located conveniently at the doorstep of a hotel. Furthermore, other than being in the shopping haven of the Curve, it is located within walking distance from other popular shopping centres like Cineleisure, IKANO Powercentre, IKEA and Tesco. With so much shopping opportunity around it, is it any wonder why the market is so popular?

“There are vendors selling interesting and unique handmade products.” 5

6 Tips for Improving a Small Bathroom Bedroom 1 Bath 1

Want to give your small bathroom a facelift but do not have the luxury of space and budget to expand? Here are some tips you can use to make your bathroom look bigger. The following tips can be accomplished without having to do any major remodelling. 1. Brighten Up the Walls

3. Change up the vanity

2. Change the Flooring

4. Bring in More Light

When dealing with a small bathroom or any room for that matter, one of the easiest ways to make it appear larger is by using light and bright colours on the walls. Darker colours can make even the largest rooms seem smaller.

Just like light colours on the walls, light colours on the flooring of the small bathroom will help make the bathroom appear roomier and more open. Lighter colour floors will help reflect the light and give the impression of an open and airy space.

6

The vanity is usually the biggest object in a bathroom, other than the shower or bath tub. Rather than keeping that big and bulky vanity, why not replace it with a small vanity or pedestal sink? By reducing the size of the vanity, you will free up additional wall space, giving the illusion of a larger room.

Adding additional lighting in a small bathroom can make a world of difference in the way the space in the bathroom is perceived. Consider adding additional light fixtures or using higher wattage bulbs, as appropriate. While it may not always be possible, if you can add a window or skylight that can bring in natural light, you will be amazed at how much bigger your bathroom looks. By making the bathroom brighter and more inviting, it seems that the space has opened up and the walls are further apart.

5. Move Your Storage Out of the Bathroom

By simply moving all of the toiletries and miscellaneous items (hampers, closet, etc), it creates additional space and helps to remove clutter in the room. Some choose to place a small storage cabinet in their hallway near the bathroom as a place to put all of the things that they would normally keep in their bathrooms. Extra supplies and paper products can even be stored in the pantry.

6. When All Else Fails, Add Mirrors

Placing additional mirrors in the bathroom will help to capture all of the available light and reflect it back into the room to make it brighter. Adding extra mirrors to the room will also add depth to the room, as the mirrors reflect each other and make the walls appear further away. By making these small changes to your small bathroom, you can create the illusion that your bathroom is larger than it really is. Sometimes you just have to work with what you have and make the best of it. And in this case, it is not necessarily a bad thing at all.

Keep Your High Mileage Car Running People are keeping their vehicles longer and driving farther than ever before. Today, the average age of vehicles on the road is greater than 7 years and more than half of them have a mileage of more than 120,000 km. As a vehicle’s engine ages, its performance decreases and oil starts to break down at a faster rate. Over time, seals begin to deteriorate, gaskets become brittle and oil consumption increases - which leads to a reduction in overall engine performance. Treating your high-mileage vehicle with a little care and consistently with the following rules for high-mileage vehicle maintenance will help ensure it will go the distance. Rule 1 Make sure you change your oil every three months or 5,000km or whichever comes first. No exceptions. Think of your engine as the heart of your car and motor oil as the lifeblood of the engine. One can’t function without the other, so stay on top of your oil-change schedule. Rule 2 Find a good mechanic and build a rapport with them. A good mechanic will listen to your questions and explain procedures clearly. Rule 3 Have your tire pressure checked at least once a month. It’s the best way to prevent unexpected flats. Also make sure to rotate your tires and check their alignment as part of a regular tune-up. Rule 4 Pay attention to warning signs. Of course, not every little thump or ping you hear spells disaster. Cars, like people, have their peculiarities, and you are sure to quickly learn what is normal for yours. With a highmileage vehicle, however, it’s best to check out any symptom --- be it a

12

sound, smell or feeling -- that seems the slightest bit abnormal. After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Rule 5 Pay attention to outward signs. If your car is leaking fluids, it can mean serious trouble. Keep an eye on the conditions of your driveway or regular parking space for stains or spots that can warn you of possible leaks. Rule 6 Schedule regular tune-ups. Even if your high-mileage car seems fine, that’s no guarantee it is. Use tune-ups to ensure your car’s major components are running smoothly and remain so. Your oil should be changed, tires checked and rotated if necessary, belts checked and replaced, brake lines inspected, spark plugs and air filter checked and replaced, and fuel injector checked. Rule 7 Check your fluids regularly. It’s dangerous for your highmileage car to get dehydrated, so be sure to keep an eye on its vital fluids. Simply lift the hood and perform a quick visual check. Use the dipstick to check the oil level; a quick glance at the coolant reservoir will let you know if you need more cooling fluid. Rule 8 Store it properly. Storing your vehicle in a dry, temperate location when not in use will prevent additional wear and tear on both its interior and exterior. Garage your car whenever possible to protect its looks. Rule 9 Stay on top of safety features. Nothing is more important than your car’s ability to protect both you and your passengers. Air bags, anti-lock brakes and any other safety features should be carefully checked on a regular basis (when your car has a tune-up) to ensure that they will perform their vital, lifesaving functions.

Feeding our need for speed! Ever since the first Malaysian F1 Grand Prix was first held at the Sepang track annually, we Malaysians have been bitten by the F1 bug. Many have become ardent fans since then. We simply could not get enough of the thrills and spills of a Formula One race. Whenever the race is not held in Sepang, Malaysians have other ways to satiate our need for speed. All across the nation, F1 fans would come out in droves to watch it with their friends and fellow race fans in bars, mamak stalls and other outlets that broadcast the race. Those who prefer to avoid the crowds would tune in to watch a live telecast of the race in the comfort of their home. This year, many F1 fans in Malaysia and around the world are excited about the Singapore F1 race. Not only is it Asia’s first street race, the Singapore F1 GP is also the first night race in F1 history! Because it is held at night and lit by thousands of floodlights, race fans are excited as to how it will turn out. Tickets for the race were selling like hotcakes and were sold out long before the actual race day. Besides the thousands of fans who watched it live in person, the world’s inaugural F1 race under floodlights is reported to have been watched by an estimated global TV audience of about 400 million viewers. Making it one of the most watched television broadcasts since the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. In the end, the inaugural Singapore F1 race was won by Spanish driver Fernando Alonso of the Renault F1 team. It was truly a memorable race for many reasons. There were thrills and spills galore throughout the race that kept fans glued to their seat and transfixed on the screens till the end of the race. As the race concluded, fans were talking about it throughout the night and for many more days till the next race.

Solaris @ Mont Kiara Set amidst several up-and-coming luxury condominiums in upmarket Mont Kiara, Solaris@Mont Kiara is fast becoming a hotspot for the trendy and young urban crowd. Offering a wide range of entertainment outlets that ranges from sports bar to trendy clubs, it is not difficult to figure why. Most of the outlets there are located in SohoKL, a sizable mall with an array of retail shops that also includes a well-known supermarket for all your grocery needs. There are also restaurants and outlets that offer an outdoor area for alfresco dining and people watching. Being a relatively new development, there are still quite a few unoccupied outlets. But there is enough going on now to excite most visitors. What makes SohoKL popular can also be found in the myriad of outlets around it. You can choose to unwind and pamper yourself in the relaxing spas, or tantalize your taste buds at the numerous restaurants offering local delicacies to international flavours like Korean, Japanese, Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisines. Because not every outlet is on the ground floor, do look up for you might be surprised by what you can find there. If you just want to hang out and watch the world go

by over a cup of latte, there are also several alfresco cafés to be found there. Of course, there is also the ubiquitous the mamak nearby, should you require a teh tarik fix. If you have been to Solaris@Mont Kiara before, you already know about the difficulty in finding a parking space during peak hours. If you are not too bothered with paying parking charges, you can always park in SohoKL’s designated parking area. And if you are in a hurry, some of the outlets also offer car jockey services for your convenience. One of the reasons why Solaris@Mont Kiara is fast gaining popularity is because it is in the vicinity of many established townships. Metallica Death Magnetic (Universal Music)

Featuring this month’s latest and hottest new releases!

New Kids On The Block The Block (Universal Music)

Pussycat Dolls Doll Domination (Universal Music)

Metallica is back and heavier than ever! Their highly anticipated 9th studio album, “Death Magnetic”, signals the band’s return to its roots. The album mixes heavy guitar riffs, thrash tempos, melodic guitar solos and machine gun drums all the ingredients fans want from a Metallica album. Songs such as “Cyanide” and “The Unforgiven III” shows the complex song writing being put into each song combined with the darkness of early 80’s Metallica records. “The Day That Never Comes” can be considered its most downbeat track which starts out slow and builds up tempo towards the end in epic Metallica fashion.

The New Kids On The Block - five now fullygrown men who forever defined what the modern boy band would look and sound like are back together for the very first time in nearly a decade and a half with their first new album since 1994, “The Block”. The first new single, “Summertime”, has been blowing up the charts. NKOTB collaborated closely with Nazaree as well as other gifted producers and writers including Bryan-Michael Cox, Emanuel Kiriakou, RedOne and Fernando on this album that blends the melodic soul of vintage NKOTB with a decidedly contemporary, hip hop feel.

The decade’s No.1 group, the Pussycat Dolls, is back to storm the charts again with their sophomore disc, “Doll Domination”! The first single “When I Grow Up” has reached the Top 10 in 16 countries and counting. Domination boasts an army of A-list guests and collaborators: Rodney Jerkins leads the production credits on “When I Grow Up” and “Elevator”, Snoop Dogg returns to rap on “Bottle Pop”, and Timbaland sprinkles his Mosley magic on “Magic”, “Halo”, “In Person”, and “Whatchamacallit.” Missy Elliott appears on the second single “Whatcha Think About That,” and R. Kelly joins Polow Da Don on “Out of This Club.” The Pussycat Dolls are taking over the world. Prepare for domination!

James Morrison Songs For You, Truths For Me

Ne-Yo Year of the Gentleman

Robin Thicke Something Else

(Universal Music)

(Universal Music)

(Universal Music)

Riding high on the success of his debut album “Undiscovered”, James Morrison returns to the airwaves with his sophomore release, “Songs For You, Truths For Me”. This is a classic James Morrison record that once again showcases his distinctive, raw, soulful style - but takes it to the next level, as evident in the first single entitled “You Make It Real”. In it, James Morrison’s big, unashamedly romantic heart and generous spirit shines through like a beacon. “Songs For You, Truths For Me” sees the wide eyed soul-boy become a wiser man. With this he shines once more on a brilliant new collection of songs and cathartic truths.

Grammy-Award winner Ne-Yo is blazing the charts again with his third disc, Year of the Gentleman. The premier songwriter has constructed a suite of songs that shows exactly what he means by class. Ne-Yo proves on the first single “Closer,” it is possible to be classy and funky at the same time. Produced by Stargate, the track is an electroexcursion in the glam of Euro-disco. Opening with an enchanting guitar resembling soft rain, “So You Can Cry” is a heartbreaking tune about a friend mourning a break up. Embracing Lennon and McCartney with the same vigor as Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson, the amazing “Stop This World” should be hailed as one of the most beautiful love songs in years.

The award-winning multiplatinum star returns to center stage with “Something Else”, a joyful and modern tribute to the ‘70s soul and pop records that have inspired an extraordinary career. “Something Else” is aptly titled. Thicke echoes the change with mesmerizing Superflyera vocals, Gamble and Huff-inspired horn arrangements (“Hard on My Love”), unabashed lyrical optimism and an irresistible invitation to the dance floor (“Side Step”). The first single, “Magic,” draws all of Something Else’s influences together into one blast of disco-infused dance pop. Melding the retro and the modern across 12 tracks, Robin Thicke leads his international fanbase into inspired, sexy and refreshing new territory.

An Ode to the Murukku Food is a significant unifying factor for all Malaysians. Our love for good food is clearly reflected in the way we celebrate our festivals, be it Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali, Christmas or the Lunar New Year. Regardless of race or religion, we have made the delicious delicacies surrounding these festivities a much-looked-forward-to affair to be enjoyed amongst friends and loved-ones. As we now celebrate Deepavali, one of the most important festivals of the Malaysian Indian community, it is an opportune time we delve into a South Asian delicacy that has made its way into the hearts and stomachs of all Malaysians, the murukku. Murukku can be considered one of the greatest contributions to our cultural melting pot and it is as common and ingrained amongst Malaysians as nasi lemak and teh tarik. Crunchy and flavourful with mouth-watering savoury spices, the murukku is sure to be amongst the snacks on the table or in the pantry of any Malaysian household. Murukku is believed to have originated in Tamil Nadu and its popularity has spread throughout India, Sri Lanka, Fiji, and beyond - places where there is a sizeable Indian community. Murukku is typically made from a mixture of urad, a bean grown in southern Asia, rice flour, salt, and spices such as chili, asafoetida, ajawain, or cumin. The mixture is made into a batter and then formed

16

into a spiral or coil, and fried to a crisp. Murukku can also be rolled into a flat ribbon or shaped by hand. The latter is known as kai murukku. Given its must-have status, murukku is part of the culinary centrepiece of a Deepavali spread alongside favourites like vadai, chicken tandoori, chicken curry, lamb massala and the various rotis and naans. This spread is often the highlight of our “open-house culture where Malaysians take to the road to visit their family or friends who are celebrating Deepavali. However it is important to note that the Festival of Lights is not all about eating. Just like any major festivals in Malaysia, the celebration of Deepavali is steep in tradition and culture. Typically, a family who is celebrating Deepavali will take a ritual oil bath known as ganga snanam on the auspicious day itself to signify the cleansing of the soul for a new year ahead. Generally, there is a spirit of forgiveness and renewal. There will also be prayers offered at home and in the temple before a traditional family meal. Then the day is set for visiting, eating and rejoicing. All in all, it is good for us to rediscover how much we have in common - our love for the murukku is one of many examples - and be heartened by the fact that when we see ourselves in the right perspective, we are more alike than we are different. Deepavali Varthugal!

Make your own Murukku! Ingredients: - 1/2kg rice flour - 5 tbsp roasted urad dhal flour - 5 tbsp butter - 1 tbsp cumin seeds - Salt to taste - 1kg cooking oil for frying

Method: Mix rice flour, urad dhal flour, butter, cumin seeds and salt and form a dough. Place dough mixture into a piping or ziploc bag, cut a small hole at one end and pipe swirls onto a non-stick tray. Make 5 circles for a small spiral and 9 circles for a big spiral. Or, use a murukku maker, place in a lump of dough and pipe out the patterns, forming circles. When dough runs out, place another lump of dough and continue, connecting one end with the other to form a continuous spiral. Deep-fry the spirals in a wok or pan of oil until golden brown on both sides. Strain off oil and serve when cooled.
