Kota Damansara Community Forest Park People tend to think that a tranquil haven is found somewhere far and remote. That is true because most are found far from the hustle and bustle of cities and left untouched by development.

several times and subsequent development brought down the size of the reserve to 857 acres (3.5 km²), a fraction of what the biological wealth used to be.

But do you know that there is actually a hidden paradise unknown to many right here in your backyard at Kota Damansara? Known as the Kota Damansara Community Forest Park (KDCFP), it is a serene oasis perfect for those seeking to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Logging activities has turned the area into a secondary forest. This resulted in the growth of new pioneer plants and exotic species. Despite being a secondary forest, a number of primary forest species such as the Meranti tree are still observable. The area is a combination of flat land and low elevation hill.

Once a flood mitigation lake, the KDCFP has been zoned for recreational purposes. Over time, it has naturally evolved into a beautiful wetland with aquatic plants that attracted scores of exotic birds like egrets, herons, eagles and so on. Visitors of all ages can enjoy a beautiful and scenic natural environment as well as indulge in activities such as bird-watching, fishing, jungle trekking, jogging and so much more.

The trademark of KDCFP is an artificial lake created in the early 2000s due to the building of a road that blocked a small stream that flows through the park. This has introduced new aquatic flora and fauna attributed to the slow-flowing water body in the area.

A little known fact is that the KDCFP, located near the Selangor Polo Club along Jalan Beringin in Kota Damansara, is the oldest forest in Peninsular Malaysia! It was part of a defunct Sungai Buloh Forest Reserve gazetted in 1898 which used to contain 3,900 acres (16 km²) of protected primary forest. The forest reserve was degazetted

2

Today, the KDCFP is largely covered by rich lowland forest. It is dominated by Meranti-Keruing trees, of which, some are more than 100 years old. The forest is also rich in wildlife which includes 227 species of birds such as Black-bellied Malkohas, Crested Serpent Eagles, Kingfishers, Broadbills, Dollar birds and even the rare Argus Pheasant. 8 species of mammals and 25 species of reptiles were also found and identified in the area. Recently, a team from Zoo Negara also found the rare aquatic plant Cryptocoryne Minima

from the effects of global warming. Its destruction will not only affect the local residents but also the residents of Petaling Jaya. The KDCFP must remain sustainable because it accounts for about 8% of the total green coverage of Petaling Jaya. There is just so much population that the forests in Petaling Jaya can sustain. If it goes beyond its sustaining capacity, the air quality will be degraded. The KDCFP will also serve a social function when used as a venue for the pursuit of wholesome and worthwhile activities that not only promote healthy lifestyle but foster responsibility and help build caring communities among all Malaysians. All of us should do our part to help preserve our natural heritage for ourselves and the future generations. Whether you are there to unwind or to savour the serene environment, visit the KDCFP today to really appreciate what the residents are trying to protect.

“Fresh air and beautiful sceneries along the 650 metres trek.” growing in a swamp in the forest. However, located within the vicinity of the rapidly developing Kota Damansara, the forest is now under serious threat from development. Concerned local residents called the Friends of Kota Damansara have joined forces with the Malaysian Nature Society to protect the forest from further destruction. Together with aid from the United Nations Development Programme through its Small Grants Programme, they are working with the new Selangor State Government to gazette the KDCFP as a community forest park to disallow any further commercial development.

Besides preserving our natural heritage, the forest should be kept for its ecological function to keep Kota Damansara flood-free and cool

Home Sweet Home Is it really your “Home Sweet Home” if the interior decor does not reflect upon your own personality and style? You can hire an interior designer or contractor to provide the solutions when remodelling any of the rooms in your home. But wouldn’t it be even nicer if you were to choose what you really want from the get go? Regardless of the size of the room and what is your personal style, there are many techniques available to help you create a sense of cosiness or spaciousness. Here are some home interior decorating tips for getting what you want out of remodelling your rooms.

Creating a spacious room If you prefer wide open spaces, contemporary designs and think your personal decorating style as “light and airy”, here are some tips on achieving that sense of spaciousness in your rooms. • Use diffused ambient lighting or soft and even lighting to eliminate shadows that make the room appear smaller. Avoid ceiling lights as they tend to make the ceiling feel lower. • Choose soft or monochromatic colour schemes like cream, beige, grey or cool pastels on your walls and floors to make them recede. The ceiling should always be the lightest colour in the room.

4

• Avoid using heavy textures on surfaces and flooring. Choose tiles over patterned or textured carpeting because smooth surfaces reflect more light and make the room feel larger. Reflective and shiny surfaces like mirrors and chromes also can be used effectively. • Limit the use of patterns in the room to create a more airy feeling. A typical application of pattern might be to reserve it for an accent piece like pillows and accessories. • Keep large furniture pieces against the walls whenever possible. Choose furniture with the similar colours as the walls and floors. Also select pieces that stand off the floor on legs and are made of materials that reflect or let light through. And use as few furniture pieces as possible in the room to avoid overcrowding.

Creating a cosy room If you prefer to be enveloped by the warmth and feel relaxed in the inviting spaces of the room, the following are some things to consider when creating a more intimate space. • Use directed light like reading lamps or down-shaded lamps that casts light only in its vicinity, to create shadows that will help eliminate open spaces. Lighting from the ceiling will seem to lower the ceiling. Also use incandescent light instead of halogen or

florescent lamps for a warmer glow. • Choose strong colours for your walls and floor. A dark floor with walls of brown or deep red, blue or green tones will help create the feeling of a smaller, cosier space. • Apply textural elements like hand-knitted throws on the sofa, plush pile carpeting and draperies to add warmth to a space. Use rougher textures for the hard elements in the room – iron instead of chrome and bricks instead of glazed tiles. • Use patterns on oriental rugs, printed wallpapers and patterned upholstery fabrics to lend a sense of cosiness to the room. The more patterns in a room, the smaller it will feel. But be careful when combining patterns in a room because the rule of thumb is “Don’t over-do it.” • Choose furniture with dark finishes and fabrics to make it appear larger than it actually is. Heavy textured fabrics and large patterns will add a cosy feeling to a sofa or chair. Place furniture away from the wall and use tall pieces to divide and define smaller spaces within a room for greater intimacy. With these basic tips for remodelling any rooms in your home, you can now start planning and living in the ambiance of your own true “Home Sweet Home”. Tips to save petrol & cost damages the engine over time. There’s also no need for that morning warm up since most cars are now electronically controlled. An engine actually warms up faster while driving.

6. Tire pressure

We all know that petrol price have skyrocketed lately and that placed more burdens on our budget. So what can we do to save fuel and cost? Here are some tips to help you reduce your petrol consumption.

1. Start off slower

Speeding ahead at the green light doesn’t get you there any quicker. Studies had proved that hard acceleration saves less than 3 minutes over 60 minutes of driving but end up using 40% more fuel and increase toxic emissions by 400%.

2. Slow down

It’s not just dangerous but speeding wastes fuel. Highway speeds over 100 km/h drastically impact fuel efficiency -- cars travelling at 120 km/h instead of 100 km/h use 20% more fuel to cover the same distance. It also emits 100% more carbon monoxide, 50% more hydrocarbons and 31% more nitrogen oxides.

3. Tune-up!

Be sure to provide your vehicles with frequent tune-ups. A wellmaintained vehicle performs better on the road, decreases maintenance costs and improves fuel efficiency.

4. Smooth move

Changing the oil regularly is a double bonus for your car and the environment: when your engine is running in top condition, it burns fuel more efficiently. The average recommendation for oil changes is every 3 months or 5,000 km. The best oils for fuel efficiency are labelled “Energy Conserving” and can reduce your fuel consumption by 3%.

5. Stop idling

Idling your car for more than 3 minutes consumes fuel and can add 50% to fuel costs while shortening the effectiveness of your engine oil by 75%. Idling also runs your engine below peak temperature that

8

For safety reasons alone, you should make a habit of checking your tire pressure. Under-inflated tires increase fuel consumption and cause premature wear on the tires.

7. Lighten your load

Carrying excess weight places unnecessary strain on your vehicle’s engine and greatly affects its fuel efficiency. A loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel efficiency by up to 15% on smaller cars and up to 5% on SUVs or trucks.

8. Start driving less

Save money and petrol by driving less. Plan multiple errands into a single trip. Leave the car at home if you can get there by walking or cycling and start using public transport as often as possible.

9. Trade in the off-road vehicle

Sport utility vehicles and trucks pollute over twice as much as the average new car. Do we really need that SUV on city streets, where the extra weight and friction caused by four-wheel-drive equipment guzzles up petrol? SUVs use 30% more petrol than other cars. So, opt for a lighter, two-wheel-drive vehicle -- they’re easier to park anyway!

10. Buy a fuel-efficient vehicle

The best choice for clean driving is a hybrid car, which runs on a combination of battery power and petrol. But there are also normal vehicles with respectable fuel-efficiency ratings. A typical car produces roughly 3 times its weight in carbon-dioxide emissions every year, so a good general rule is the lighter your car, the better its fuel efficiency.

A must-see marriage proposal! Unlike before, couples are resorting to more creative and elaborate wedding proposals to declare their eternal love. This is the story of a unique wedding proposal of a friend of ours, Mr. Sean Lim. After all these years, Sean decided it is time for him to propose to his long time girlfriend, Ms. Stella Kok. But he wanted his proposal to be a surprise and a truly memorable special moment. After discussing it with his friends, they decided that since both of them are movie fans and usually spend their weekends watching movies, he should propose to her at the cinema! The initial plan was to have slides showing the proposal in the theatre but because of a busy schedule and time constraint, the slides could not be done in time. So he took the next best option – the poster gallery. With his friends’ help, a beautiful proposal poster was done up like an actual movie poster and displayed at the gallery before the couple arrived at the cinema lobby. Upon arriving at the cinema lobby, Sean led Stella to the poster and suggested that they should watch ‘this’ movie instead. At that instant, he got down on his knee and popped the question. Surprised by the suddenness, Stella was in shock for a while before their friends urged them on. “Say YES!”, they exclaimed. Right then, Stella snapped out of

12

her shock and promptly said, “Yes!” At that moment, everyone at the cinema lobby cheered and applauded. Some even whistled loudly to show their approval. The proposal was a success! After taking some beaming pictures to mark the joyous occasion, Sean took his fiancée and their friends to a pre-planned lunch. As they were about to leave, Stella asked, “So does that mean we are not watching a movie?” Congratulations to Sean and Stella. Like a romantic fairy tale, we wish that the both of you will live happily ever after. A special thank you goes to the kind folks at Cathay Cineleisure who permitted this special moment to happen! Wash rice several time until water runs quite clear. In a pot, add rice, coconut milk and water. Add shallots, ginger and pandan leaves. Bring to boil, lower heat, simmer 10-12 mins uncovered until the water has been absorbed into the level of the rice . Loosen rice grains with a wooden ladle. Cover with a tight-fitting lid, steam rice on very low heat, about 10-12 mins. When rice is done, gently fluff rice with fork. NOTE: You can use a rice cooker to cook the rice.

To Prepare Sambal Ikan Bilis:

Using a mortar & pestle or blender, grind chili paste, shallots, belacan and garlic into a paste. To a wok or saucepan, add peanut or vegetable oil, heat on high until oil temperature is 350°F, fry ikan bilis until crispy. Remove, drain well on paper towels. Remove all but 2 tbsp of oil, sauté ground paste for 1-2 mins. Add red onions, tamarind paste, sugar, salt to taste. Cook until gravy thickens (to a dark reddish brown). Add ikan bilis, mix to combine, remove from heat. Dish a serving portion of coconut rice onto a plate (or banana leaf!), a little of each garnishing and some sambal ikan bilis - served hot or at room temperature.
