Hello area!

Just received your magazine in the mailbox a few days ago. I thought the postman made a mistake and posted someone else’s subscription magazine into my mailbox until I start reading it. I enjoyed the rather informative articles. Nice pictures and layout. It looks stylish and elegant. Keep it up. Melvin L. Thanks! It is our intention to make area magazine classy. We want to differentiate ourselves from the other free publications.

Hi there!

I must admit that after so many years of living in this area, I didn’t know about the Kota Damansara Community Forest Park until I read your magazine! It makes me wonder if there are other hidden treasures right in our area. Thanks! Azhar I. If you find more of those treasures, do let us know and share it with the rest of the community.

Hi area,

I love food! I love your food section! I will certainly check out some of the places mentioned in your magazine the next time I look for food around this area. Can you feature more about food next issue? Priscilla O. We love food too! And we also love your suggestions! We are planning to expand our food section in the future issues. So look out for it! It will not disappoint all you food lovers out there.

Dear Editor,

I noticed a glaring grammar mistake on last month’s issue. On the cover, “Paradise at our own backyard” is incorrect. It should read “Paradise in our own backyard”. Otherwise, it’s a nice little magazine overall. Look forward to the future issues! Zack Thanks for pointing out the mistake. The editor was duly punished by buying dinner for the team. We appreciate everyone who points out our mistakes because that’s how we can learn from it and improve. Or, at least, get another free dinner! We promise to be more careful in the future.

A Feast That Unites All Malaysians Our sense of unity is stronger on the heels of our proud nation’s 51st Merdeka Day Celebration. And now in the month of September, that sense of unity will get even stronger with the return of the Ramadan bazaars! We Malaysians are always passionate about food and if there is one thing that unites us more it is a feast of our favourite Malaysian fares. The Ramadan month is a very special and exciting time for all Malaysians, muslims and non-muslims alike. For our muslim friends, the Ramadan is a holy month of fasting and spirituality leading to the festivities of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. But for non-muslim Malaysians, it is a month of savouring delectable delicacies at the multitude of Ramadan bazaars. Held daily during the fasting month of Ramadan every year, the Ramadan bazaars are a month long food feast catering to everyone, regardless of creed or colour. The bazaars can be found almost everywhere around the nation during that time. Visitors and locals alike can sample a wide variety of mouth-watering local delicacies and satisfying beverages on sale at the bazaars. Other than the food offered being good, the prices are really cheap too! Many of the food items are priced from below RM1. Bucking the current trend to increase prices, many vendors actually maintain their prices from the previous years. What more can we ask for? A common misconception by many people is that the Ramadan bazaars are the same as the regular “pasar malam” or night market. They are in

4

fact different because, unlike the “pasar malam”, Ramadan bazaars are opened daily from around 4pm till 9pm for the convenience of muslims to purchase food to break fast during the Ramadan month. During the Ramadan month, there are hotels and restaurants offering promotions for those looking for a more comfortable and upscale experience to break fast. But the majority of Malaysians would still prefer to satisfy their appetite at the Ramadan bazaars on the street. Other than the tasty food, the kaleidoscope of colours, delightful smells and the carnival-like atmosphere is a unique experience that will keep you coming back for more.

For your convenience, we have compiled a list of Ramadan bazaars found in the Petaling Jaya area. If you know of other bazaars that are not listed here, do feel free let us know!

Garden Design for Small Spaces Many contemporary urbanites now own and live in condominiums and townhouses. However, like many new modern homes, these stylish residences offer very little space for those who want to have a garden. It doesn’t help when gardening in small spaces are often overlooked in garden design guides. Normal garden design is often presented as a list of principles or rules and illustrated on a bigger scale. Most city dwellers do not have the luxury of space or land to design their garden area. In fact, most do not have the time or the inclination to undertake the maintenance the bigger gardens would require. Although gardening in a small space has its limits, it does not have to be constricting. In a small garden, you can pay attention to details. You can keep on top of the maintenance, while still having the time to enjoy your small garden. In fact, many small space gardens are designed to freshen up entertaining and sitting areas, rather than the need to nurture plants. Whatever your reasons for having a small garden, there is no reason it cannot be well-designed. Virtually any plant or garden style can be worked into a small garden space. The principles of good garden design still apply, but you will need to change them slightly to fit your available space.

6

Benefits of a small garden 1. Design can be easier when you can take in the whole picture at once. 2. It takes less plants and features to make a dramatic effect. 3. You get to know every space and plant in your small garden. Any plant that is out of place or not thriving can be easily spotted and corrected quickly. 4. Small gardens lend themselves to being enclosed. For example, with hanging plants, you might not need walls to give the impression of a secret garden. Overall, a small garden should be an expression of your personality and style. After all, the small garden is an extension of your home and speaks volume of your sensibilities and tastes. And should those tastes and sensibilities change, it is much easier to rework a small garden.

“A small garden is intimate.” Challenges of designing a small garden 1. The entire garden can be viewed as a whole. Some small garden spaces will be able to accommodate a hidden turn on a path or even divided into garden rooms, but usually, small gardens can be taken in whole. This means that since your garden will be viewed as a composition, don’t go overboard with the design. 2. Limited space means you are going to have to make careful choices. As much as you want to, you will not be able to grow every plant you want. You will need to curb your inclination to buy plants on impulse and assume you will find space for it. 3. Colours should also be limited, to give your small garden cohesion. Less is more. Cooler colours, like green, will make the garden appear larger. You can compensate for the limited colours with the use of a variety of textures. The textural contrast will help blend the plant material and allow the garden to flow. 4. Every plant or feature will need to serve a purpose. Why waste space on some plant or feature that serves no purpose when you already have so little of it?

“Small yet dramatic in effect.” 7

“Balik Kampung” Safety Driving Tips 1. Plan your journey ahead to avoid last minute rush and panic. 2. Obey speed limits. They are there for everyone’s safety and you don’t want a speeding ticket to spoil your holiday mood. 3. Obey safety rules when changing lanes. Give appropriate signals and check side mirrors and rear view mirror before executing this potentially dangerous traffic manoeuvre. 4. Practise safety at traffic intersections by stopping on red and amber warning signs. 5. Avoid tailgating as it very dangerous. And if you’re being tailgated, let them pass you. 6. Always overtake safely and at a safe distance. Never overtake when in doubt. 7. Be courteous while driving and don’t jump queue. It is rude and dangerous. Patience is a virtue. 8. Don’t weave through traffic. It is hazardous and risky to all road users. 9. Don’t hog the road. If you’re not overtaking, keep to the left lane.

The joyous Hari Raya Aidilfitri is almost upon us. Everyone is already getting into the holiday mood. Most Malaysians are excited to “Balik Kampung” to visit and celebrate the holiday with their family and friends. Because a large number of people will be going home for the holidays, the roads will experience much heavier traffic than usual. It is also during the “Balik Kampung” season when road accidents occur more frequently. So before we get too caught up with the excitement, here are some road safety rules to keep in mind to ensure that you will get to your destination safely to enjoy the festivities.

8

10. Always use the seatbelts. If you’re sitting at the rear, use the rear seat belts. 11. Don’t drive sleep-deprived. Sleep is not a matter of willpower, but a biological need. If you are drowsy, pull off the road and get some rest. Also never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 12. Service your car regularly to make sure it is in the optimum condition. 13. Focus your full attention on the road. Using your handphone or reading a map is distracting and can lead to an accident. 14. In rainy weather, leave extra space between you and the car ahead. If the rain is very heavy, turn on your headlights. Don’t turn on the hazard lights unless your car is disabled and parked by the side of the road. 15. Don’t overload the car. A heavier vehicle is harder to control and stop.

Finding happiness in numbers From phone numbers to car number plates, the number “8” is a significant number in the Chinese culture. For the Chinese, the number “8” in Mandarin is pronounced as “ba” or “patt” in Cantonese dialect which sounds similar to “fa” or “fatt” that means “prosperity”. Naturally, when 08/08/08 (August 8th 2008) came along, thousands of Chinese descendents around the world took the opportunity to get married. In our Malaysia alone, hundreds of couples got married in mass ceremonies on this rare and auspicious day that happens only once in a century.

On a similar note, a number of the couples, especially the grooms, agree that the date will make it easier for them to remember their wedding anniversary. There are even some couples who say that the number 8 resembles an upright symbol for infinity. One of the reasons they got married on a date with this many 8’s is to symbolise their infinite love for their spouse. Finally, a very special congratulation goes out to our friend, Mr. Low, who got hitched to Ms. Cindy on the auspicious day of 08/08/08. We wish that your marriage will be blessed with prosperity and infinite love!

At the Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur, a reported 480 couples tied the knot, while another 238 couples did the same at the Klang Hokkien Association in Selangor. At Menara Kuala Lumpur (KL Tower), 7 couples took their wedding to another level by pledging their vows on the open deck at the top of the tower on that day. The Chinese were not the only people who took the opportunity to get married on that date. In fact, thousands of couples of different religion and race around the world also pledge their vows because of the rarity of the date. Most of the couples said that they had chosen to take their vows on that day because it was a rare, once-in-a-lifetime date to remember their wedding day.

A Merdeka blast to remember! The current economic situation and rainy weather did not dampen the joyous mood and patriotic spirit of the crowd who turned up at the Curve to celebrate our proud nation’s 51st Merdeka. Held annually as the Curve’s Merdeka countdown celebration, the organisers made sure that the crowd who turned up for the event this year would have a great time with energetic performances by entertainers, a host of fun games and an amazing fireworks display. At the start of the carnival-like event, the crowd gathered was comparatively smaller than previous years. But as the time drew closer to the countdown, the crowd gathered has swelled much larger. In fact, many who turned up for the event early were actually surprised by the absence of the ubiquitous traffic jams and overwhelming crowds. For the hundreds of Malaysian of all races, young and old alike, who turned up that evening, they were certainly not disappointed as they were vowed by the enthusiastic performances and entertained by the fun games organised. The performers gave their all to entertain the crowd and to get them more into the celebrative mood. They certainly succeeded when the crowd responded to their performances equally as enthusiastic. When it was almost close to midnight, everyone joined in the count down to Merdeka. It is unfair to compare it to the spectacular fireworks of the Beijing Olympics, but the fireworks display prepared by the Curve certainly provided the same effect that entertained and enthralled the enthusiastic crowd. As the smoke cleared after the rousing display of fireworks, the satisfied crowd slowly trickled out of the Curve, bringing with them great memories of our nation’s 51st Merdeka celebration. But for those who rather spent their Merdeka quietly at home, they have missed out on a great celebration!

Crowning the King!

Is the durian really the King of Fruits? In celebrating this durian season, we spoke to several fervent supporters of the durian in the area to get into the seed of the matter. Reshvinder Kaur (23), Klang

Adrian Ng (32), Taman Tun Dr. Ismail

What do you think about the durian?

What do you think about the durian?

I think the durian is a symbol of Malaysia. We will never be truly complete without a durian in our homes every now and then.

How do you like yours?

I like my durian in cendol! Especially those that you get from Melaka’s Jonker Street. It’s pretty cheap, but it’s REALLY good.

Where do you get yours?

At the side of the road, near my home. There’s this man who sells durian by the street in his white van – his durians are the best!

What do you think about people who do not like durians?

Obviously the scent of the durian puts them off. But I think they should just give the durian a shot. Like I said, the durian is a Malaysian symbol and once you overcome the overpowering scent, you’ll be able to enjoy it.

Brenda James (31), Bangsar South What do you think about the durian?

Step aside crème brulee. This custard textured delight is second to none!

How do you like yours?

On the shell (the way nature intended) and not on a polystyrene tray.

Where do you get yours?

I love it because it tastes so good and it is something that is unique and can’t be defined.

How do you like yours?

I like to take it out and freeze it. It is something different from eating it the conventional way and it’s just like durian ice cream!

Where do you get yours?

When I travel on business to Mentakab. Reasonable price, popular spot for durian, many different species of durian.

What do you think about people who do not like durians? Ayyiooo…they are missing out on one of the finer creations in life.

Au Chun Hoe (32), Taman Tun Dr. Ismail What do you think about the durian? Unique taste that can’t be described!

How do you like yours? Raw and uncooked. I like it creamy with lots fiber in it.

Where do you get yours? From the morning market.

What do you think about people who do not like durians? It is their opinion. It’s either you love it or hate it.
