Modest Modules Studio Professor Terry Boling Brayden Templeton, Tori Quinter The studio is focused on the site of an abandoned brick manufacturing facility in Fairdale, KY just outside of Louisville. Jefferson National Forest surrounds the land, providing sweeping views of forested hills and a park-like experience. We focused on designing modular, high quality housing through the lenses of construction, shipping, and embodied energy of materials to keep costs at a minimum. Using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) as the driving force of our design, we created a compact living unit that interacts with neighboring units in ways both private and public. Overall sets of twelve units share two common buildings used for exercise and workspace. The users can reach their unit by taking a short hike to their common group of units. Implementing the helical pile system allows units to sit comfortably without dismantling the natural landscape. The Cascadia Clip system in combination with wood siding creates a seamless transition between the two prefabricated modules. Keeping these spaces modest promotes outdoor activity and interaction amongst the users.
