WORKSHOP AGENDA SHIRLEY STERN

ARCHITECTURAL MANAGER SHERWIN-WILLIAMS COIL & EXTRUSION COATINGS Stern is the Architectural Manager, East Coast, for Sherwin-Williams Coil & Extrusion Coatings (formerly Valspar), the largest global coatings company. Throughout her 20+ year career, Stern has experience in all facets of coatings and specializes in educating and assisting architects with finishing options for factory-applied baked-on coatings for monumental projects globally, as well as project management.

BILL STEVENS

DIRECTOR OF SALES & MARKETING RESAWN TIMBER CO. Stevens has been a wood enthusiast for his entire life. Since January 2012, he has served as Director of Sales & Marketing for reSAWN, which provides shou sugi ban, new, and reclaimed wood materials for architectural specifications for both exterior and interior applications. Previously, he served as Certified Sustainable Building Advisor at the Sustainable Building Advisor Institute. He holds a BSA, Finance and Marketing, from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.

STAN SU

DIRECTOR OF ENCLOSURE DESIGN MORPHOSIS Su provides oversight with the detail design and technical resolution of complex enclosure systems. He brings extensive experience in both architectural design practices and facades-specific consultant teams for all phases of design and construction. His recent focus includes: the Orange County Museum of Art, Costa Mesa, CA; the new US Embassy Campus, Beirut, Lebanon; and the Kolon One and Only Tower, Seoul, Korea.

PAUL A. SUJKA

SENIOR STAFF SIMPSON GUMPERTZ & HEGER Sujka specializes in new design, new construction, and construction administration services. He is also experienced in projects involving investigations and renovations of building enclosure systems. He participates in the SGH Roofing and Waterproofing Practice Area and the Metro NY Chapter of RCI, Inc.

TIM SVARCZKOPF

TECHNICAL REPRESENTATIVE ACCSYS GROUP

Svarczkopf has spent his entire career at the intersection of efficient resource use and building materials. He began at Weyerhaeuser in 1994. For the next 16 years, he promoted engineered wood at the distribution, retail, and manufacturer levels. In 2012 he joined Eastman Chemical. They were introducing a new decking product using a process called acetylation. This process made a durable and stable board that was also sustainable and non-toxic. In 2014, Accsys Technologies hired Svarczkopf to represent Accoya on the East Coast.

JEFF THOMPSON PRINCIPAL WALTER P MOORE

Since 2001, Thompson has worked in the field of specialty structural/ enclosure engineering in North America and worldwide, focusing on design projects involving innovative material use and complex geometry in close coordination with architects and clients. For Thompson the most exciting part of projects is the collaboration of the various parties on the team. The exchanging of ideas, philosophies, and solutions is the lifeblood of innovation and successful development. As a team leader and senior project manager, he guides multidisciplinary teams through critical decisions, anticipating challenges and emphasizing communications to keep work on track.

JAY VALGORA FOUNDER STUDIO V

Valgora has 30 years’ experience in multiple disciplines including: architecture, urban design, and industrial design. His work has received numerous awards and has been featured in numerous publications including: The New York Times, The Architect’s Newspaper, and Crain’s New York. Born in Buffalo where he was inspired to become an architect by the grain elevators and steel mills, Valgora lived and practiced in London, Boston, San Francisco, and Toronto, and considers these great cities as practice for his eventual embrace of New York City. He has a MArch from Harvard University, a BArch from Cornell University, and was a Fulbright Fellow. The Studio’s work encompasses reimagining New York City’s waterfront in all five boroughs. The exploration of radical structures and fabrication includes: the Accoya wood canopy in Helena Lobby, Yonkers Raceway; MOBI Pavilion; Morimoto Asia.

ERIK VERBOON MANAGING DIRECTOR WALTER P MOORE

Trained in architecture and engineering, Verboon brings a deep global experience with a focus on the design of complex and high-performance building envelopes for a wide range of building types—old and new, academic, commercial, and cultural. His experience encompasses a wide variety of facade applications including: high-performance, double-skin facades; geometrically complex composite façades; and custom-unitized enclosures for both new buildings and existing building retrofits and additions. His experience in digital design, geometric rationalization, and environmental analysis allows him to bring the highest value to his clients while also helping designers deliver projects to the highest level of design sophistication while maximizing performance and minimizing cost. He also teaches enclosure design at a number of leading universities.

COREY C. WOWK

SENIOR STAFF II SIMPSON GUMPERTZ & HEGER Wowk joined Simpson Gumpertz & Heger in 2012. He works on projects involving new designs, investigations, and renovations to building enclosure systems. A Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt, he holds a MDesS, Technology, from Harvard University and a BArch from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
