10 Upcoming Middle States Accreditation
Archmere is achieving excellence through the process of accreditation.
The strength and uniqueness of Archmere Academy lies in the contributions of the many faculty and staff, alumni and their families who have been a part of the community since its founding in 1932. The varied perspectives, talents, skills, and philanthropy of so many continue to provide a variety of resources to ensure a flourishing school. Their heart-warming stories fill this issue of the Archmerean.
One of the most recent and exciting stories to share is the philanthropy of Rocco and Mary Abessino, parents of two graduates, Vincent ’93 and Joanne ’97, whose charitable family foundation made a lead gift of $3 million to Archmere. Two million dollars is being directed to underwrite the renovation of the Performing Arts Center and one million dollars to underwrite needbased scholarships. Of the $2 million designated for the Performing Arts Center, $1 million has been established as a 1:1 challenge grant, hoping to encourage other donors to contribute to the estimated $6 million renovation project. The Center, originally completed in 1983, includes a 700-seat theater, lobby, art gallery, backstage “green room,” dressing rooms, and choral and band rooms. When renovations are completed, the official name for the complex will be “The Rocco A. and Mary Abessinio Performing Arts Center.” We are hopeful to begin renovations after graduation on June 2, 2024 with projected completion by January 2025.
The Center is the gathering place for the Archmere community for Masses, concerts, plays and musicals, assemblies, and many other programs - including Open House and events welcoming friends, relatives of our students and families, and the general public. After 40 years, the complex needs new HVAC systems, electrical work, upgraded lighting and sound systems, better ADA accessibility, new theater seating, and more modern finishes.
In many conversations with alumni over the years, inevitably they reminisce about a particular teacher, coach, or staff member who have made an impact in their lives. It could have been the support of a teacher to manage through a class, the experience of a coach who taught valuable life-long lessons through sports, the advice of a counselor about a social situation or about the college selection experience, or the every day interactions with a member of the cafeteria staff. The “specialness” of Archmere - a place where “please” and “thank you” are regularly used and others hold the door for youis the people that choose to be a part of this wonderful educational experience.
This year, among the many members of the Archmere community who have passed away and whom we remember in our Masses and prayers, there are two former teachers included in this list: Mrs. Patricia K. Cunningham who passed way on August 1, 2023, and Mr. Terry Newitt who passed away on September 9, 2023. These two teachers have made a tremendous impact on the lives of so many Archmere students, and leave behind teaching legacies that are truly aspirational and exemplary. The tributes to each of them in the “In Memoriam” section of this issue touch on the ambitious and rich education and experience of each of these lifelong educators.
We already have a number of leadership gifts and pledges, and we are grateful to those who have made multi-year pledges to the project. We look forward to having many more members of the Archmere community support this latest initiative.
In addition to remembering Patricia and Terry and their contributions to the Archmere community, we are grateful for the life of Joseph P. Melloy ’52, former President of the Archmere Alumni Association and co-founder of the Friends of the Patio, who passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. Joe often recounted his personal story of how his four years at Archmere changed the trajectory of his career and life, and he was grateful for the guidance he received at Archmere, particularly from then Headmaster, Fr. Justin E. Diny, O.Praem. So many alumni have shared similar stories over the years about how the Archmere experience as a whole or one particular teacher helped them positively shape their lives and careers.
These examples of dedication of time, talent, and resources are exponentially found in the list of the Honor Roll of Donors, included in this issue of The Archmerean. We are so very grateful for the annual contributions of so many that help us to continue to tell the stories of students’ lives being transformed by the Archmere experience. I believe many have us heard the expression, “it takes a village to raise a child.” That statement could not be truer than in our current day, when parents and their children are dealing with a number of societal trends and pressures that seem to run counter to our school’s Catholic Norbertine mission.
The Archmere community has begun a year of self-study as part of the re-accreditation process of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Archmere is re-accredited every seven years, though the cycle has been extended a year due to the pandemic. The process entails a series of conversations and surveys with the various stakeholders in the school to gain perspectives on key areas of operation, beginning with the school’s
mission, belief statements, and core values. We are excited to reaffirm our commitment to our Catholic Norbertine charism and to advance, adapt, and grow our educational and formative experiences to meet the needs of today’s students and families. Just as the theater, the gathering place for the Archmere community, is slated for renovation, so too, do we re-evaluate and make “renovations” to the Archmere student experience through self-reflection, constructive feedback, and long-term planning through our re-accreditation process.
Archmere, as a community, is never at rest, always looking to the future while aiming to sustain for excellence each day.
Wishing you the best of times,

By Rev. Joseph McLaughlin, O.Praem.
The psalmist proclaims: “Blessed indeed is the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked ... but whose delight is the law of the Lord and who ponders his law day and night. ... He is like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters, that yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves shall never fade; all that he does shall prosper” (Psalm 1:1-3). Psalm 1, the first of the 150 psalms, perfectly describes Father Justin E. Diny, O. Praem., Archmere’s 4th headmaster. In the May 16, 1987 issue of The News Journal, Father Diny was pictured dressed in gardening clothes, standing amid the flowering azaleas in the formal garden near the statue of the Blessed Mother. He was quoted by a staff reporter as saying, “If you want to be remembered for a lifetime, plant a tree.” Father Diny planted, watered, pruned, and transplanted many bushes and trees at Archmere during his 51 years on campus, and so is remembered for a lifetime and more. He is remembered even more for the seeds of “pietate et scientia” that he planted in the hearts and minds of countless alumni and alumnae, faculty, and staff.
Father Diny was born in Hilbert, Wisconsin on June 17, 1912 and at baptism was named “Edward.” He grew up on his parents’ farm in Hilbert, with two younger sisters; his older sister had died in infancy. Edward attended parochial school in Hilbert and then enrolled as a boarding student at St. Norbert High School in West De Pere, Wisconsin in September 1925. Upon graduation from high school in 1929 Edward entered St. Norbert Abbey, receiving the white Norbertine habit and the name “Justin” on August 28, 1929. Justin received his B.A. from St. Norbert College and continued graduate studies in theology at St. Norbert Abbey from 1933 to 1937. During that time he also taught chemistry and Latin at St. Norbert High School. He was ordained a priest on March 22, 1937, Monday of Holy Week, and celebrated his First Mass on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1937 at St. Mary’s Church in Appleton, Wisconsin. In June of 1937, Father Diny arrived at Archmere. From 1937 to 1944, he taught Latin, chemistry, and mathematics. He also served as athletic director and prefect of discipline. On January 29, 1944, his father died suddenly and Father Diny was assigned in August 1944 to Central Catholic High School in Green Bay, closer to his mother.
While studying at Marquette University’s summer session in 1946, Father Diny received a letter from Abbot Bernard Pennings, O.Praem., appointing him as headmaster of Archmere. Father Diny traveled to West DePere to meet with Abbot Pennings to have him reconsider the new assignment. Abbot Pennings remained firm in his decision, and so, Father Diny moved back to Archmere in August 1946, where he spent the rest of his life. On the holy card Father Diny distributed at his First Mass were words attributed to St. Norbert: “O Priest! You are not your own master, but the servant and minister of Christ.” His 51 years of service to Archmere, 37 of them as headmaster, remain unsurpassed to this day.
The psalmists’ words: “all that he does shall prosper” (Psalm 1:3) describe Father Diny’s long tenure. The list is extensive: the opening of St. Norbert Hall in 1959, the Moglia Fieldhouse in 1967, the Justin E. Diny Science Center in 1973, and the Library and Performing Arts Center in 1983. There were the first Student Council elections in 1946, a new football field and track in 1953, the National Honor Society in 1962, the Headmaster’s Council in 1968, the Minority Scholarship Program in 1970, the Headmaster-Principal model of governance in 1970, the establishment of coeducation in 1975, and the establishment of the Board of Trustees in 1980. Outside of Archmere, Father Diny was a Board Member of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (19631967), Bulletin editor and member of the Rotary Club (1970-1973), member of the Board of Trustees of Ursuline Academy, board member of the Delaware Secondary School Athletic Association (DSSAA), and vice president and president of the Delaware Association of Independent Schools. When Father Diny arrived at Archmere in 1937 there were 75 students; in 1975 there were 366 students (including 50 girls); and in 1983 there were 460 students. Friday, October 20, 1989, was Career Day at Archmere for juniors and seniors. Father Diny mingled with the forty graduates who had returned to Archmere to speak of their careers and how Archmere had prepared them. During the opening assembly, Father Diny sat in the back row of the theatre and confided to Joseph Brooks ’72 that he did
not feel well. That night during a Mass celebrated for the Raskob Family in the Patio by Bishop Robert Mulvee of Wilmington, Father Diny felt quite ill. He missed all the events of Homecoming on Saturday, October 21. On October 22 he concelebrated at the 10:00 AM Mass in the Patio chapel. Attending that Mass was Dr. Salvatore Vasile, father of Anthony ’74 and Robert ’75. Dr. Vasile suggested that Father Diny go to Sacred Heart Hospital in Chester, where it was determined that Father Diny had suffered a heart attack. On Monday afternoon, Father Diny suffered a stroke in the hospital. His recuperation seemed steady and sure. On the evening of November 10, I visited Father Diny in the hospital. His last words to me were: “Tell Mike Collins I won’t bowl this year, but I will next year.” On the Morning of November 11, after eating breakfast, Father Diny suffered a second stroke, and died at 7:00 AM. On November 14, Father Diny’s body was brought to the Patio for Evening Prayer, followed
by a viewing in the Music Room where over 200 people attended. On November 15, about 1,000 people gathered at Holy Rosary Church, including all the students, faculty, and staff. Father Diny’s Funeral Mass was held at Daylesford Abbey on November 16. He was buried in the cemetery in front of the abbey church one grave over from the graves of Father Roger Paider, Archmere’s 3rd headmaster, and Father Alexander Arendt.
At the end of the November 15 Mass at Holy Rosary, Dr. John V. Flynn ’60, then President of Archmere’s Alumni Association and father of Jeffrey ’86 and Brian ’89, said in part: “Justin E. Diny was a headmaster in the truest sense of the word. But he was much more. To us, he was an advisor during a time of learning, a role model during a time of development, a support during a time of need, a source of grace, a friend always. Today we take joy from knowing Father Diny, from his teaching us, from his touching us. May the institution he guided for so long continue to do the same for those who follow us.”
Blessed indeed is Father Diny, who delighted in the law of the Lord and pondered it day and night. He is a tree planted beside the flowing waters, who continues to yield fruit in our time, whose leaves have not faded. All that he did has prospered. As Father Diny said, “If you want to be remembered for a lifetime, plant a tree.” We remember Father Justin E. Diny, O. Praem., Norbertine priest, servant, and minister of Christ, “prepared for every good work.”

In Archmere’s community, innovation shines through the Advanced Cancer Research and Analysis (ACRA) class. Enrollment in ACRA is a commitment to a transformative educational experience. In partnerships with Data Driven Discovery in Biomedicine (D3b), the brainchild of Dr. Jay Storm ’86 and Dr. Adam Resnik, the class serves to transcend traditional high school education. Its origins date back more than three years ago, when Dr. Storm approached Archmere Academy with the idea of creating a partnership to give back to his alma mater. Dr. Storm’s goal was to help Archmere students gain skills, knowledge, and experiences designed to prepare them for an increasingly technological career in medicine. He also hopes to inspire them to continue his groundbreaking work of sharing information on cancer patients in search of a cure, particularly for childhood brain cancer patients. Students who take part in the course enroll in a semester of advanced genetics with Ms. DW, a semester of data analytics with Dr. Wilcox, and the opportunity to apply for a summer internship to conduct research and data analysis with CHOP and D3b. In its inaugural year, the ACRA class welcomed doctors, researchers, data scientists, and CHOP donors to campus throughout the year for guest lectures, poster symposiums, and networking events.
When former Pittsburgh Steelers safety and current Harvard medical school neurosurgery resident Dr. Myron Rolle showed up for a day at Archmere in November 2022, many students were excited to hear him talk about his experiences. After the whole school assembly in the theater, one group got to spend a little extra time with Dr. Rolle – the ACRA class. On that particular day in November, Dr. Rolle’s star power and moving story of hardship and success dazzled students with a school-wide presentation during the day, while ACRA students and their parents enjoyed personal conversations with him and other CHOP doctors at a gala fundraising event during the evening at Dr. Storm’s house.
“ACRA was an unforgettable opportunity. This class pushed me out of my comfort zone by challenging me to apply knowledge through research posters and lab experiments. Not only that, but I got to learn more about data analysis and how integral this is in innovation. These skills will certainly help me in college where I hope to do more cancer research”, says Clara Korley ’24. Most students in ACRA already had a basic understanding of biology and computer programming. ACRA pushed them to apply these skills through research of both academic papers and sources
provided by D3b. By the end of the first semester, students had completed a poster presentation on a specific gene and its correlation with cancer. This research was augmented in the second semester in which students learned how to analyze data relevant to their chosen gene using the computer programming languages Python and R. Through the ACRA, students learned invaluable lessons about public speaking, collaboration, research, and data analysis.
According to Amelia Kaiser ’23, “ACRA has by far and away been the most amazing experience I could have imagined, especially at a high school level. From the opportunities to form professional relationships which I have since reached out to for advice about the pre-med world, to the complex skills learned in the lab which have helped me immensely in my college courses. I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in the class take it as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.” After completing the engaging classwork, Amelia’s ACRA experience culminated in the two-week internship in partnership with D3b.
Along with Amelia, five other students in the ACRA class were granted the opportunity to take part in the internship with the D3b research and data analysis division last summer. The internship entailed physician shadowing, knowledge surrounding research ethics, and an opportunity to see how medicine worked behind doors. For those two weeks, the students worked hard with their project manager, Shehbeel Arif, to end with a cumulative project on clustering methods for Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumors. Zach DiVito ’24, one of the students in the internship, added: “the internship allowed me to gain a real perspective into medicine. Seeing surgery and watching Dr. Storm perform miracles opened my eyes to not only the work physicians do, but the type of person they are and the love they have for their patients.”
While ACRA kick-starts its second year, the course continues to evolve. Current ACRA students have already had multiple guest lecturers, experts in their fields including Dr. Storm and Dr. Resnick, give talks on cancer hallmarks and clinical encounters. They have practiced complex lab skills not typically taught in the high school classroom, growing cell cultures and gaining proficiency with micropipetting in preparation for the annual fall field trip to CHOP and the D3b lab. This year, students will not only receive a tour of the lab from lab director Dr. Mateusz Kotpyra, but also participate in a demonstration of complex lab procedures to sequence a part of a cancerous genome, observe Dr. Storm in the operating room, and participate in clinical rounds with a nurse practitioner. Students are practicing their scientific literacy in class by researching current groundbreaking studies on cancer and cancer treatments to present their findings, simulating a college seminar class and preparing for their first major research assignment.
As the Advanced Cancer Research and Analysis class continues to revolutionize a new era of science education at Archmere, the growth, innovation, and impact of the class will undoubtedly bring Archmere graduates to the forefront as future pioneers in the biomedical field.

In the field of education, it’s not uncommon for schools to be evaluated based on sets of standards that come down from “on high,” whether that be from the Department of Education, a state-based initiative, or a district-wide curriculum and instruction office. But who evaluates the independent institutions? Archmere’s long standing relationship with the Middle States Association, Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools allows us to formalize the process of achieving “excellence through the process of accreditation, by affirming to the public our school’s trustworthiness and commitment to continuous improvement…,” as stated in the Mission of MSA-CESS. In 7-year cycles, Archmere formally renews its commitment to this integral process of goal-setting, strategic planning, surveying our constituents, and reevaluating our approaches, facilities, finances, governance structure, etc., all within the “Excellence by Design” framework laid out by Middle States. I’m sure we’ve all heard of the proverbial “taking a long, hard look in the mirror.” At Archmere, a place with such a solid foundation, I would say that we tend to like what we see. However, there is a constant need for refinement and reflection in the ever-changing realm of education. Just as we preach a growth mindset with our students, so too must we practice one ourselves.
In the Fall of 2024, Archmere will officially host a Middle States Visiting Team for a 4-day stretch. Our overarching goal within that time frame is to provide a comprehensive and authentic snapshot of the Archmere community and ethos. How do we do what we do and more importantly, why do we do it? While this goal seems easily attainable in the eyes of those who know and admire Archmere’s “radical hospitality,” countless hours of meetings, vibrant discussion, report-writing, and strategic planning will precede the visit, a visit that we began planning for in February of 2023 with focus groups comprised of faculty, students, and Board Members. Each of our constituent groups will be represented in unique and meaningful ways when the visiting team arrives.
The culture at Archmere encourages constant, organic growth; it’s one of the many reasons that I remain fulfilled—both inside and outside the classroom—after a decade of working here. We are accustomed to setting the goals and internal metrics of success based on student course surveys and other feedback; however, the process of crafting a “Plan for Growth & Improvement” that we acknowledge as worthy of our collective time and energies is a community discussion. MSA-CESS mandates that accredited institutions identify two “Student Performance Objectives” and at least one “Organizational Objective,” both with corresponding action plans. After robust discussions within various focus groups, Archmere will pursue the following areas of growth for our next accreditation cycle:
How/Why of Learning: Shifting the focus to process over outcomes; in a world deeply affected by artificial intelligence, how can we encourage learners to be critical and autonomous thinkers and writers?
Character Building: Formalizing programs and student-centric experiences related to ethics and leadership. How can we continue to prepare empathetic leaders prepared for every good work?
Experiential Learning: Increasing the number of opportunities for students to partake in Lunch & Learns, internships, externships, and other career programming. Our hope is to create a bridge between the academic and professional world, meaningfully showing students how they can apply their knowledge
Defining our Norbertine Pedagogy: The Norbertines, their radical hospitality, and their ministry of concord and peace have deeply impacted the Archmere community, namely the learners that have walked this campus since 1932. Despite having fewer Norbertines in the classroom, our faculty has taken up the torch to support educational approaches that are uniquely Norbertine and create a “sense of place” in the hearts and minds of our students.

In 2004, Jess Zutz quoted Mel Brooks for her senior yearbook quote – “If you’re alive you must flap your arms and legs, you’ve got to jump around a lot, for life is the very opposite of death and therefore you must at the very least think noisy and colorfully, or you’re not alive.” Jess Zutz Hilbert has done a lot of moving around and has done it colorfully, to say the least.
Of late, in June 2022 Jess received a commission to join the Oregon National Guard as a Judge Advocate in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate. As part of the accession process, Jess spent six weeks at Fort Moore in Georgia this past August completing the U.S. Army’s Direct Commission Course, a six-week course designed to develop and train officers on fundamental skills, leadership, and physical fitness. A 38-year-old direct commissionee, Jess was in training with much younger recruits, most a decade younger. Not surprisingly, she completed this basic officer training course as the “Distinguished Honor Graduate” and is now in Charlottesville, VA studying the intricacies of Army law and regulation at the The Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School (TJAGLCS).
Jess has long had a desire to join the military in order to serve her family and country. What started as an eight-yearold discovering her father’s (Larry Zutz) Army uniforms in her childhood attic snowballed after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. While at Archmere, Jess hoped to apply to the United States Military Academy at West Point, but the school did not have a field hockey program. Jess ultimately opted to matriculate to Stanford University on an athletic scholarship where she played field hockey for four years and walked on to the varsity softball team her senior year, garnering numerous accolades including: 2007 NFCHA West Region All-American, 2004 NorPac Conference Rookie of the Year and 2007 Offensive Player of the Year. She was named to Academic AllAmerican teams in both field hockey and softball. She joined the Archmere Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.
Jess looks back on her time at Archmere as formative. “I would not be where I am today if not for Archmere. I had been at a different independent school since before kindergarten
and decided in 8th grade to get out of my comfort zone and come to Archmere.” Jess embodied the Auk belief of getting involved and in exploring new opportunities. A fivesport athlete in field hockey, basketball, soccer, winter track & field, and ice hockey, Jess complemented her athletic pursuits with theatrical ones as a four-time cast member in Archmere’s musical theater productions. “I learned two key life lessons at Archmere that I draw on every day. First, I learned that taking calculated risks could pay big experiential dividends. Secondly, my participation in sport, music, and theater at Archmere taught me how to fail, but also more importantly, to not be afraid to do so.”
Her risks and failures, in part thanks to Archmere, have landed her where she is today. While studying business and law at the University of Oregon, Jess enrolled in a “New Venture Planning” class. For a class project, she and several classmates began tinkering with food condiments. Their project eventually evolved into Red Duck Foods, an artisan organic condiment company she co-founded and ran for eight years with several of her business school classmates. After selling the business in 2020, she joined her civilian employer, law firm Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, who has encouraged and supported her service and her desire to give back to her nation and her community.
Jess resides in Portland Oregon, with her husband, Matt, and their ten-year-old, Kayla. Upon completion of her active duty training, she will return to the West Coast by mid-December. “The most challenging thing about this military training experience has been being away from home,” she asserted.
Jess continues to get out of her comfort zone and take risks. “Service was another key theme I picked up on while at Archmere,” she related. “It’s simply about neighbors helping neighbors. I just so happen to wear a uniform when I do it.”
Jess has embodied, and continues to live, the Auk values of community and respect. We are proud.

Growing up in North Wilmington, Billy Phillips loved the game of baseball. His Dad, Bill Sr., made a name for himself playing professionally for the Cubs and Dodgers and became a legend playing numerous years in the Delaware Semi Pro League. Like many kids his age, Billy had aspirations of being a big league ball player. Young Billy began carving out his own path to stardom early in life. He quickly gained attention in junior high school for his feats on the diamond. Success came quickly for the young athlete, but it was not without heartache. In the 8th grade, Billy’s hero and father, Bill Sr., lost his battle with cancer. The younger Phillips continued to be inspired by his father even after his passing. As a freshman at St. Mark’s High School, Phillips rewrote the record books of Delaware high school baseball. He became the 1st freshman in school history to make the varsity baseball team. The precocious Phillips was not done there - he led the Spartans to a state championship. He went the distance on the mound, and in the state final to helped St. Mark’s
capture the state title. Phillips went on to garner 1st team All-State honors as a freshman with a sparkling 10-0 record on the mound. As a sophomore, Phillips once again led the Spartans back to the title game where the team won its second consecutive state championship. His exploits caught the attention of many Division 1 universities as well as several major league scouts. Billy Phillips was well on his way to achieving his childhood goal of becoming a major league baseball player.
As a senior, Billy Phillips was expected to break the record for career wins by a high school pitcher in the state of Delaware. He committed to the University of Maryland to continue his baseball career. With the Major League Baseball Draft on the horizon in June, Billy had a lot to look forward to as a high school senior. Unlike the devastating curveballs he used to overwhelm hitters, life threw Phillips a curveball of its own that same year. After the first few days of practice that season, Phillips found that he was not his normal self. Bloodwork revelaed that he had cancer. He was now in for a different kind of fight - a fight that would force him to miss his entire senior year and graduation from high school. While cancer zapped Billy’s strength and took away the spring of his senior year, it did not take away his competitiveness, his zest for life, and his incredible spirit.
Fast forward two years later. Billy was at College Park on the campus of University of Maryland. He was taking classes, he was cancer free, and he was once again on the diamond playing the game he loved. Billy pitched for the Terps until back surgery derailed his senior year. Upon graduation, he landed at Archmere coaching baseball
for the Auks and taking a full time job on campus. Phillips was once again thriving and making the people around him better. Since arriving on Manor Avenue, Phillips has made a lasting impact. His leadership and influence has been immeasurable to the baseball program. The lessons he teaches goes well beyond the scope of the diamond. He has been a difference maker.
On Tuesday, September 5th, Billy Phillips’ star power was once again on display. While he wasn’t taking the mound as a big league pitcher, he was at Great American Ball Park, home of the Cincinnati Reds to help throw out the first pitch to kick off Singley Strong week in Cincinnati. Founded by current Cincinnati Reds coach and Archmere alumn Joe Singley ’16 after the death of his father Joe Sr., The Singley Strong Foundation was created to spread God’s love and encourage all people affected by cancer. As a non-profit organization, The Singley Strong Foundation
offers support and strength while easing any financial burdens that patients and families face. The Singley Strong Foundation has helped countless families who have been affected by cancer. On a picturesque evening in Cincinnati, Phillips, accompanied by young Cameron Severs, a blood cancer survivor, shared in throwing out the first pitch. A nervous Cameron deferred to his older brother to throw the opening pitch received by Phillips. The Singley, Phillips, and Severs families were all on hand at the ballpark that evening. Billy and Joe’s paths to the big leagues may be a little different than the ones they had envisioned as youths growing up in Northern Delaware. However, these boyhood buddies have teamed up to make a major league difference in the lives of others.

We begin a new school year filled with hope and expectation. In Advancement, the 2022-23 fiscal proved to be a successful year, one of growth and optimism. The Archmere Fund exceeded the $520,000 goal, totaling $579,680 for the year, $41,846 more than 2021-22. Our parent clubs continue to be instrumental in the school’s continuing success, raising $113,00 over the course of the year, and our Alumni Association gave $9,000 to the Archmere Fund and $19,000 to the Alumni Scholarship Fund. In short, we continue to be blessed by an engaged and committed community of parents, alumni, and friends. Your generosity speaks to the essence of the Auk community, a community of faith and friendship, of humor and hope.
One school theme this year captures our fundamental mission – “Using our gifts to better the world.” Your commitment as a supporter of Archmere embodies the school’s belief in giving back, in leaving the community better than you found it. Our mission remains the same: educating young men and women in the spirit of St. Norbert, a spirit that acknowledges academic excellence and a faith community of inclusion. Your help is imperative for our ongoing success. As we prepare our students for the challenges of an ever-increasing complex world, we will continue to evolve and improve our innovative academic curriculum. The Archmere Fund directly supports our school operations and programming as well as scholarship and assistance programs essential for making the school accessible to a wide variety of families.
In the following pages and online*, you will see statistics about the generosity of our donors, along with listings of specific donors as well as those who have chosen to support the Archmere community through planned giving. These numbers and lists are inspiring examples of the Archmere community stepping up in the Spirit of St. Norbert.
I am asking you to contribute to our fundraising efforts for this fiscal year, 2023-24. I have appealed to the Archmere Board of Trustees, to our devoted faculty and staff, and to our current parents; your participation is equally important as we give back to a community that is life-changing. We have provided a QR below as well as an envelope to make the process simple and direct.
I ask that you consider a gift to this special place. As always, I am deeply grateful. Your commitment to the school ensures our future success.

Planned giving is any gift made in lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning. These gifts include gifts of equity, life insurance, real estate, personal property, securities, or cash. Planned giving preserves a donor’s legacy, representing their commitment to positively impacting communities by supporting the organizations they care about.
Named in honor of Archmere’s founder, Abbot Bernard H. Pennings, O.Praem., the Archmere Founder (Planned Giving) Society recognizes the families and individuals who have told us of their intentions to include the Academy
in their wills or other estate plans. If you have included Archmere in your plans, please tell us—By letting us know, you are assured your gift will be used as you intend. The Great Auks of the Class of 1973 celebrate their 50th graduation anniversary this year, and to mark this auspicious occasion, several members have come together to celebrate this milestone by establishing a class scholarship to help deserving students attend Archmere.
Tom Grimm has helped to organize a group of his classmates who, he says, “like to play golf once in awhile, and, well, actually we have played pretty regularly over the last 10 years.”
During these golf outings, which often turn into trips made to places such as Myrtle Beach, SC, a favorite location, the group reminisces about the past, and as Grimm put it, “the great times we had and the great education we each received at Archmere, where we made friends for life.” Grimm says they all appreciate that they have been successful in life because of their experience at Archmere, and now they want to pay it forward. According to Grimm, John O’Malley was the one who first suggested looking into starting a Class of 1973 Scholarship, and the rest of the group quickly got on board. Together, a group of six of them—Phil Bartoshesky, Larry DiSabatino, David Facciolo, Tom Grimm, Brendan Killeen, and John O’Malley—have contributed more than $20,000 to endow the scholarship, and they challenge other members of their class to make a gift to the fund as they are able. Tom Grimm says, “Together we can create a legacy for our Class, while helping future students afford an Archmere education.”
If you are a fellow member of the Class of 1973 and you’d like to contribute to your class scholarship, you may donate online at www.archmereacademy.com/endowment. When prompted to direct your gift toward a particular fund, be sure to select the Class of 1973 Scholarship Fund from the dropdown menu. All contributions are tax deductible.

Patricia Kelley Cunningham arrived at Archmere in 1974 as a French teacher. She attended Brockton High School in Massachusetts and went to Brown University, graduating in 1957. She spent her junior year abroad in Fribourg, Switzerland, and would continue her international studies throughout her life. She received two Masters degrees in French, one from Marquette University and one from Middleburg College. A lifelong learner, Patricia also took graduate classes at Bryn Mawr College and the University of Delaware. During her career at Archmere, she would become chair of the then Foreign Language Department (1981-1988), now called the World Languages and Cultures Department. She would also teach English, Italian, and Spanish.
Her love of languages and culture extended beyond the classroom. In 1974, she, along with Father Stephen Rossey, O.Praem., art teacher, launched an international student travel program providing students with immersion into the languages they were studying. The trips included aspects of art and history, as well as language and culture. Patricia wanted students to appreciate abroad experiences, particularly with the study of languages, so that they might consider semesters or years abroad in their higher education career plans. Patricia had a strong empathic belief in broadening students’ experiences to begin to learn about the human condition in other parts of the world.
She spent most of her vacations studying in France, Spain, and Italy. Over the years, she and her husband, George ’55, developed an international family of friends.
After her tenure as department chair, Patricia shared her teaching experience as Supervising and Mentor teacher at Archmere, developing a program to guide new and developing teachers, supporting them in finding their unique voice in the classroom. High standards and expectations from students, a strong work ethic about teacher preparation and planning, a passion for lifelong learning and the subject matter being taught, and sincere compassion for students and their individual needs defined Patricia as a teacher.
After her retirement from Archmere, Patricia continued to share her teaching passion and experience by developing a new Spanish program for Saint Edmond’s Academy at the request of then Headmaster, Brother Michael Smith, C.S.C, and Associate Headmaster (and former student), Michael Marinelli ’76. She spent several years revamping the middle school program and introduced the elementary school curriculum when the school expanded to the lower grades. Tireless and ready to set self-imposed professional goals, Patricia was excited to share that she had now taught from grades kindergarten to twelfth grade, something that she had not considered ever having the opportunity to do. At the same time, she developed an international travel and immersion program for the middle school students that led to life-long friendships with the directors of Idiomas Escuela de Nerja in Nerja, Spain.
While Patricia was passionate about teaching and learning, she placed all of her work in the context of her deep Catholic faith. She said her daily prayers (in various languages), had special devotions to saints, and regularly practiced her faith. She enjoyed being a lector at Mass, reading the Scriptures with such an interpretive gift that the words became alive and mutidimensional as if lifting from the page.
Patricia was a tremendous role model for her students and colleagues, and a wonderfully loyal and loving friend to many alumni and teachers. In many ways, we became her extended family, and she and her husband, Dr. George Cunnningham ’55, would always be ready to welcome us into their home.
Terry Newitt joined the art department faculty in 1981, and for the next thirty-nine years, he inspired students and collaborated with colleagues to sustain and grow a “top drawer” visual arts and design program at Archmere. Terry encouraged students to explore their talents and their uniqueness as he expanded the department during his tenure as department chair. In the 1990s, photography and advancement placement studio art courses in drawing and design were added to the curriculum. Moving into the 21st century, student work began blending emerging technologies, digital art, and different processes and techniques. At the same time, he never lost sight of the fundamental and tactile aspects of creating art, as he would take groups of students to Ireland and other locales to sketch and capture in images the life, locale, and culture of the people.
In 2005, Terry was named Delaware Art Educator of the Year, and two years later, the first annual Fine Arts Festival was held, featuring the work of student artists and a featured alumni artist. He was a mentor to alumni artists, welcoming them back to Archmere and following and supporting their careers with sincere enthusiasm.
Outside of the art studio, Terry was a coach of soccer, wrestling, and golf. He managed set design for school plays and musicals, where he also inspired students and collaborated with colleagues. He was “all in” when it came to educating students. When John Jordan ’80 served as Principal at Archmere, he asked faculty members to write a self-assessment which reflects on their academic year, their successes, and their challenges. Terry’s self-assessment in his last year of teaching included the following excerpt: “I have a goal of trying to treat each student uniquely. How
can I skill build with each student individually as opposed to whole groups? What makes each student tick? Trying to do this, trying to stay fresh, takes effort. I feel I can never teach my subject the same as I taught the years before. There are always new wrinkles to add or perhaps lessons or parts of lessons that now need to be reconsidered . . .
My goals are to continue to be the best teacher I can possibly be. Just maybe, one of these years I shall get it right! I feel blessed.”
Terry was a scholar, a gentleman, a true life-long learner, and an articulate man, often called upon as a senior faculty member to reflect on our school mission and values at faculty retreats and student assemblies. His words were as introspective and profound as were his paintings, and they seemed to always reflect new revelations, and new learnings about the beauty and magnificence of God’s creation. Just study any piece that Terry has created and you can see the thought and detail he has woven into the scene, making it real and timeless - a snapshot of our human experience.
He was a family man. He cherished his wife, Robin and was proud of his children, Alison ’95 and Jamie ’02, their spouses, and grandchildren.
As one of his artist colleagues and retired Archmere teacher, Jody Hoffman put it, “He is an ORIGINAL.” We will miss every Halloween “Mr. Newitt” portray one of the Blues Brothers with his twin brother. We will miss his “artist’s eye” that he shared with us through his work. He saw the world in scenes that struck him as important to capture,

and then worked of establishing the detail to validate his perception of the world. His two famous pieces, the interior courtyard of the Patio with the fountain reinstalled, and his more recent “Home Yellow-Brick Home” have such a luxurious quality of welcome and comfort. It is as if the pieces are inviting you to make this place, this Xanadu, your home. In our faith, we believe that Terry is at home with God, and we also feel that Terry’s home in this world will always be at Archmere. His legacy lives on in his artist protégé, many of whom are successful and well-respected artists and designers, and in the three campus murals he developed with his students: the History of Science, the History of the Performing Arts, and the History of the Norbertine Community and Archmere Academy.
To honor and to remember the contributions of these great teachers of Archmere, we have established the Patricia K. Cunningham World Languages and Cultures Department Chair and the Terry Newitt Art and Design Department Chair. These named Chair funds will be available to help underwrite various projects and expenses related to these disciplines. Contributions in honor and in memory of Patricia and/or Terry may be made at any time. To acknowledge the creation of these funds and the conferred honor, a portrait of Patricia will be hung in the World Languages and Cultures department in Saint Norbert Hall, and a portrait of Terry will be hung in the Art and Design Department in the Manor.
By Michael A. Marinelli, Ed.D. ’76, Head of School
Joseph Melloy ’52 was actively involved as a volunteer and a leader in the Wilmington and Archmere communities for decades. After retirement from a long career at IBM, he volunteered his time and talent by joining Alumni Council and eventually helping to lead the Alumni Association as President.
He was especially interested in preserving the history, art, and architecture of the Archmere estate, co-founding the Friends of the Patio. The Helena Springer Green Raskob Series, or “The Green Series” as it is usually called, has been developed over the years as a series of concerts and lectures September through May that take place in the Patio. He, and his wife, Alberta (Bert), made an unbeatable pair who supported the fine arts and were artists themselves - Joe, the painter and Bert, the flower designer.
Joe often introduced his friends and acquaintances to Archmere by bringing them as his guests to a number of the arts programs held in the Patio. In fact, my last conversation with Joe was the Saturday evening of Homecoming 2022, when he, son Michael, and I had a long and interesting conversation about historical connections of Archmere and the Raskobs. I can still picture Joe sitting with his glass of white wine, seeming to soak in the ambiance of the courtyard with the trickling fountain and stained-glass ceiling illuminated with lights for the evening reception.
We are grateful that Joe, among his final requests, suggested contributions be made in his memory and honor to the Green Concert Series. In addition to keeping music and art alive in the historic Patio, proceeds from the programming are directed to the Patio Restoration Fund, which was fortified by a bequest of and named for Dr. Stanley Praiss ’57. We share our collective sympathy and prayers with Joe’s family, as we fondly remember a gentle and caring person who lived a life of service to others.
