From the Head of School Gratitude By Michael A. Marinelli, Ed.D. ’76 - October, 2025 Gathering my thoughts to write has taken some time, as I have been thinking of a number of topics. Interestingly, as I began to put down my thoughts in writing, there did seem to be a theme that appeared to connect them – gratitude. Grateful for Philanthropy Archmere Academy is built on the contributed talents and treasures of generations of students, parents, teachers, staff members, grandparents, foundations, and friends, who, as benefactors, have supported the vision of the institution. Every year, as in this issue, we publish and thank all those who have contributed to our educational and formative work with their gifts to Archmere. We continue to be most grateful, for without this annual support, we would not be able to provide all of the programs and financial assistance to our students. Just as the present is built on the successes of the past, I challenge all of us to consider a bold vision that includes making an Archmere education available to all motivated and academically prepared students, regardless of their families’ financial position. This vision requires us to understand the significance of the need and the challenge to raise funds to respond to that need. To put it plainly, all of the dollars raised in a fiscal year that are not restricted for specific purposes are used to underwrite financial assistance. However, to fully underwrite the entire financial need of current families, unrestricted fundraising at its current level would have to increase eight times to meet the total financial need, which continues to grow as household incomes cannot keep pace with the rising cost of education. The longterm solution is to substantially increase the Academy’s endowment, such that it sufficiently produces income to match total annual financial assistance. While we have contributed to the endowment regularly each year, particularly with the establishment of named scholarship funds in memory or in honor of someone, a couple, or a family, contributions to the endowment corpus are not keeping pace with the growing annual financial needs of student applicants’ families. Therefore, you, our donors, are our “living endowment,” each year helping us make an Archmere education possible for many students whose families could not otherwise afford to do so. Having been associated with Archmere since 1972, first as a student and a financial assistance recipient, and later 4

as an employee for over four decades, I believe that the financial assistance program has been the most influential and mission-centric initiative of the Academy, making sure that the school reflects a socio-economic demographic that is broad and consistent with the surrounding geographic community. The program honors Saint Norbert’s vision of a Norbertine community as articulated by Fr. Bernard Ardura, O. Praem., “It is a matter of imitating Christ’s life. The driving force of the contemplative life is charity. The active life gives bread to the hungry, words of wisdom to the ignorant; it corrects those who stray, recalls the proud to a sense of humility, cares for the sick, dispenses the necessities to each and every person, feeds the flock, comforts the weak, and heals the sick.” The Order of Prémontré: History and Spirituality, p. 334) The financial assistance program at Archmere has always been “taxed” in that there has always been a greater expressed need from families whose children are applying for admission than there are resources to offer them. Hence, all of our families financially stretch to meet their tuition obligations. Everyone – donors, students’ families, and school administrators – works together to give students the Archmere experience. We are so very grateful for what is already being accomplished, and we need those who are already supporting our work to inform others and encourage them to join us. Fiftieth Anniversary of Coeducation This Year Maybe because I came from a coeducational Catholic grade school experience, I did not think that the transition to coeducation at Archmere was a “big deal.” I don’t recall that it made a significant difference in my day-to-day experience as a student. I do remember that we did not have uniforms. Instead, we had a dress code, making the styles of the 70s wellrepresented in the fashion of both the boys and girls, from platform shoes and bellbottom pants, to midi-skirts and Farrah Fawcett hairdos. Wide collars and ties matched with crushed velour jackets and plaid pants were a look for the guys. I do recall that the presence of girls created a more social atmosphere in the school, especially when it came to participation in clubs and activities, dances, and proms. While the number of female faculty increased considerably with the admission of girls, men occupied leadership

and administrative positions in the school. In 2010, when I assumed the role of headmaster, I recall having a conversation at the request of female faculty and staff members to discuss their perception of a male-dominated perspective among the administrators of the school. I responded that I imagined it would be so, since Archmere was founded, owned, and administered by the Norbertine priests as a boys’ boarding and day school for 43 years. However, it was interesting to have such a conversation in 2010 – 35 years after coeducation! Today, I believe that the administrative and departmental leadership of the school is balanced with male and female perspectives. Certainly, among the students, leadership roles in academic and extracurricular areas are wellrepresented by boys and girls. Among the academic department chairs, half are male and half are female. Of all Archmere’s administrators, fifty-seven percent are women, including the school’s first female principal. There is much research on the benefits of both same-sex high schools and coeducational schools. A good deal of the research focuses on academic outcomes, and many of the studies are still inconclusive about significant differences in students’ achievement in coeducational versus single-sex schools. We do know, from advances in brain research, that some generalizations can be made about the cognitive developmental differences between boys and girls. However, it seems the more we are learning about brain development and effective teaching and learning, there is no “one size fits all” solution. Knowing
the student and being able to tailor an academic program that challenges without overwhelming him or her seems to be most effective, regardless of gender. Dr. Laurie Santos, professor at Yale University, in her class, The Science of Well-Being, references research by positive psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who coined the term “flow” and wrote the book, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (2006). Santos describes flow as, “[a] mental state in which you’re performing an activity where you are fully immersed, where you feel energized, focused, you’re fully involved, and you’re enjoying it as you go. It’s like being in the zone. It’s like this period where you’re so losing track of time in this deep enjoyment of something.” It is that place in performing a task where your abilities are perfectly matched with the challenge. When a task is too far beyond our capacity to complete, we become stressed, worried, sad, and even depressed. When the task is too simple relative to our ability, we can become bored, apathetic, and depressed. Similarly, in teaching, we often refer to the “zone of proximal development,” a concept developed by psychologist Lev Vygotsky. It is that phase of learning where the student can accomplish a certain range of skills with the guidance of a teacher, but not independently, and it has been considered an ideal point in student cognitive development for effective instruction. It is with this research that we can effectively teach students at Archmere, regardless of gender, because we have the resources of informed teachers and learning specialists, as well as small class sizes, allowing us to know Winter 2026 • Archmere Academy

each student well and assemble with them an appropriate learning pathway. There are studies that focus on other non-academic benefits of coeducation, which include immersing students in a diverse and balanced social environment that prepares students for the real world; giving boys and girls opportunities to develop mutual respect and understanding; and creating a place that allows students to develop emotional maturity and confidence. This balanced social environment can support expanded perspectives and enhanced solutions to critical thinking problems. Boys and girls working collaboratively throughout the day can accelerate their learning, while giving them life experiences to develop into well-rounded adults. I believe that the leadership of Archmere in the early 1970s would be pleased to see the success of the coeducational high school model at Archmere and the evolution of our academic and co-curricular programs.

The Abbot and his Council, comprised of Norbertines of Daylesford Abbey, received recommendations from the board regarding a variety of areas of school operations, including facilities, personnel, fundraising, strategic planning, and programs. In 2001, the corporate structure was changed, making Archmere independent of the Norbertine community, with the Board of Trustees of Archmere governing the school, which continues to be an independent, Catholic school in the Norbertine tradition. Today, the Board of Trustees has eighteen members – men and women, parents and grandparents of current students and alumni, alumni from the 1970s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, and a Norbertine priest, Rev. A Word about the Word, “Philanthropy” Philanthropy literally means “the love of humankind.” Philanthropy – fundraising – at Archmere does not have a milestone anniversary this year, unlike the other initiatives that I have mentioned. Philanthropy is intrinsic to a Norbertine school, a community that shares with each other what we have – time, talent, treasure – to collectively advance the experience for everyone. It is a natural reflex, like breathing. Philanthropy began in 1932, the first school year, when the Mothers’ Guild held tea parties to raise funds for the school’s activities. It was a vitally important force again in 1934, when Mr. Raskob renegotiated the mortgage that he held on the sale of Archmere to the Norbertines, extending the payment schedule and forgiving $100,000 of the $400,000 purchase price during the Great Depression, when Archmere’s future was questionable. He and Mrs. Raskob continued to send annual contributions to help fund students’ tuitions well into the next decade. Buildings were constructed, athletic fields and facilities were created, and scholarships were established through philanthropy. We are truly grateful for this philanthropic history, and should celebrate it every year as each year is a special anniversary year! Grateful Living I read recently an article about the difference between “gratitude” and “grateful living.” It was explained that gratitude is a feeling you have when someone gives you something or does something for you that you value, and you did not expect to receive it, nor do they expect anything in return. In those moments, you feel special, blessed, and happy. The rest of the time, we may not feel those same feelings of gratitude. Grateful living, however, is a practice that allows gratitude to permeate our lives through adverse and joyful times. Brother David Steindl-Rast is a ninety-eight-year-old author, scholar, and Benedictine monk who has lectured around the world about grateful living as a true source of happiness. His TED talk on grateful living presents the idea that every moment of our lives is an opportunity to be grateful. We need to “stop, look, and go,” as he says, meaning that we have to be aware of each moment, take it in, and then do something. Even if that moment is filled with adversity. The question becomes, “How do I use the experience?” It is a powerful idea that has left me with more than a sense of gratitude for the many years I have been associated with the Archmere community. I feel the challenge to use every moment moving forward in my tenure as head of school to “stop, look, and go.” I conclude my reflection with a poem entitled Gratefulnesse by British poet George Herbert (1593-1633). It seems that Brother David Steindl-Rast echoes the message of the poet
five centuries later: a plea for a heart that is consistently thankful, not just when blessings are convenient, but a heart whose pulse is a constant expression of praise. Sincerely,

Mission and Heritage “Be the Best” By Rev. Joseph McLaughlin, O. Praem. The psalmist wrote: "Seventy is the sum of our years, or eighty if we are strong" (Psalm 90:10). Paul J. Pomeroy, Jr, was born on June 12, 1946, and is strong in his 80th year. The psalmist continued: "Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain wisdom of heart" (Psalm 90:12). Paul numbered his days aright at Archmere and gained wisdom of heart - a wisdom he shared with his students, athletes, and colleagues. On January 26, 1984, Paul wrote his first self-evaluation to me as Headmaster. He noted: "As far back as I can remember, my father always told me that if I planned on doing something, ’do it right or don’t do it at all.’" Paul’s Dad always stressed that no matter what field Paul chose, "be the best in that field." Paul concluded: "I guess this advice, more than anything, has shaped my work ethic." Paul spent his early years in South Philadelphia, less than a block from my home. Our paths did not cross at Saint Monica Elementary School. My father died at the end of my first grade, so my younger brother and I transferred from Saint Monica School to Saint Aloysius Academy, a boarding school in West Chester, before Paul entered Saint Monica School. In September 1960, Paul entered Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia, where he studied Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Latin, French, History, Religion, and Civics. The Prep’s tagline is "Educating Men of Competence, Conscience, and Compassion since 1851." Upon graduation from The Prep, Paul enrolled in Saint Joseph’s College, where the motto was: "Spirit, Intellect, Purpose." Paul was graduated from Saint Joe’s with a BS in Physics and Math in June of 1968. As so many Archmere graduates have done, Paul hoped to return to his alma mater as a teacher. However, The Prep was slow in responding. That same spring, Archmere’s Headmaster, Father Justin Diny, O. Praem., was looking for a Math/Physics teacher. Paul applied to Archmere on May 29, 1968, indicating he had no teaching experience and said he would be willing to teach either younger or older students. For extracurriculars, Paul listed in order: sports, newspaper, and literary magazine. Father Diny offered the position to Paul. Additionally, Paul had an offer from the Catholic school system in Philadelphia and the offer 8

of a fellowship to Villanova. Facing the dilemma, Paul asked his father for advice; his father asked, "Son, did you give your word?" Paul had given his word to Father Diny and in keeping his word, taught at Archmere for 35 years, fulfilling his father’s words: "Be the best in that field." Paul began teaching in September of 1968 Paul Pomeroy in 1986. and on January 18, 1969, married Patricia (Trish). The Class of 1973 entered Archmere in September 1969. On page 15 of their senior yearbook, they wrote: "It’s the third time around for some of us ... nice guy ... good teacher ... electronic Tic-Tac-Toe and the rotating chair ... football practices ... All of these things reflect the diversity and the personality of Mr. Paul J. Pomeroy. And it is for these and for his interest, his friendliness, and his dedication that We, the Class of 1973, proudly dedicate The 1973 Patio to him." Above Paul’s picture is the following: "1969-70: IPS; 1970-71: Geometry; 1972-73: Physics." Paul earned a Master’s of Education in Natural Sciences on May 17, 1974, from the University of Delaware. Archmere’s first published calendar, for 1975-1976, lists Paul’s duties: Science, Football, and Head Track Coach. Paul became Chairman of the Science Department in 1978. Paul took on other duties: Varsity Football Coach, Cross Country Coach, Varsity Softball Coach, and Director of Admissions (1990-1998). In those years, Archmere’s enrollment grew from 435 in 1990-1991 to 487 in 19971998. In 1998, Paul left Archmere to become Principal of Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Bensalem, PA. When Paul retired from Holy Ghost in 2005, he returned to Archmere to teach Physics and assist with admissions. On July 28, 2006, I was asked to serve again as Headmaster until June 30, 2010. Mr. Anthony G. Flynn, Esq, ’69,
Archmere’s attorney, asked me, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, what I needed as I resumed the position of Headmaster. Having been out of school administration for ten years, I told Tony that I needed Paul to help me in the role of principal of Archmere. Shortly after I became Headmaster in 1983, Paul was elected the faculty representative to the Headmaster’s Council, and so I had the wise counsel of Paul at every meeting. Paul had stepped out of administration when he retired from Holy Ghost Prep, but at my request, he agreed to serve as principal, the first non-Norbertine principal. Archmere had had a Headmaster/Principal model of governance from 1970 to 1983. I gave Paul the Headmaster’s office, and he got right to work. On June 24, 2008, Paul submitted an "End of Term Report" covering his 18 months as Principal. He listed 14 accomplishments, stating: "You, Bill Doyle, Father Collins, and I have worked well together as a Transition Team." But, honestly, it was "All Paul." With Paul as Principal, the sky brightened, spirits were lifted, and before the words appeared in the Student Life Center, Archmere had become again a community of reverence and wisdom, respect, and zeal. Paul also covered the walls of Saint Norbert Hall with framed lists of students’ names & AP accomplishments.
and Jerry Ambrogi, assistant coach. I taught and coached Jerry at Archmere. And I would have taught Bill if he had attended Archmere instead of Saint James. Bill was like my brother." For Paul, students, athletes, and coaches became sons, brothers, and lifelong friends. On July 7, 2025, Paul wrote to me about a dream he had had: "I am at Archmere teaching, but I am having trouble controlling my class! I can’t figure it out. I never had that problem before. And the marking period is closing this week, and I haven’t given any tests or quizzes!!! So, I went to Vince Filliben for advice." That dream was a nightmare, whereas Paul’s 35 years at Archmere were, in the words of Mrs. Helena Raskob, "a dream come true." The psalmist concludes Psalm 90: "Let the favor of the Lord be upon us: give success to the work of our hands, give success to the work of our hands" (Psalm 90:17). That is Archmere’s prayer for Paul J. Pomeroy, Jr. - a man of "competence, conscience, and compassion;" a man of "spirit, intellect, purpose," a man of his word - "All for the greater Glory of God" (The Prep’s Motto). Mr. Pomeroy’s A.P. During Paul’s teaching years at Archmere, he received numerous awards and commendations, among them the Tandy Technology Outstanding Teacher Award, the Advanced Placement Recognition Award, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, and the NCEA Secondary School Award for High School Teaching. For 33 years, Paul’s wife, Trish, taught Biology at Archmere and succeeded Paul as department chair. Their two children, Paul ’88 and Melissa ’90, left their mark of excellence as well. Paul was President of the Student Body his senior year, and Melissa was a member of Student Council her senior year. Both received the Activities Medal at their graduations. Melissa received the Women’s Athletic Medal on June 3, 1990, the day after her softball team shut out the defending state champs, William Penn, 5-0, ending that team’s 39-game winning streak. Melissa’s Dad was the coach. Paul’s grandson, Paul IV, was graduated from Archmere in 2021. He ran cross country and track at Archmere, was in the band, and won the Medal for Instrumental Music at graduation. On January 12, 1989, Paul spoke to Matt Zabitka, staff reporter for The News Journal, about the final football game of the 1988 season against Caravel. Paul said: "I look to the Caravel side of the field and there’s Larry Cylc, Caravel’s head coach, Vince Stumpo, Larry’s assistant, and Jim Gannon, spotting for Caravel. I taught and coached all three at Archmere. Larry and Vince were like my sons. On the Archmere side, there was Bill Doyle, head coach, Winter 2026 • Archmere Academy

In Remembrance Rev. Joseph A. McLaughlin, O. Praem. This article was written from an oral history interview John Jordan ’80 held with Fr. McLaughlin on April 26, 2025.. The Epic of Gilgamesh and Edith Hamilton’s Mythology. Like many new teachers, he had not read them all. It was an early lesson: Archmere was not a place of shortcuts, for students or faculty. Assigned to teach five sections of sophomore English, Father McLaughlin quickly discovered the challenges of a classroom filled with confident, sharp-witted boys who recognized his inexperience. He was tested, teased, and memorably nicknamed “Wimpy” by one student, a moniker that lingered for years. Yet these early trials forged a bond. His stories—of a class prank involving Handel’s Messiah, of fruit flies vanquished with a can of Raid—became part of Archmere lore, revealing a teacher willing to learn, adapt, and laugh at himself.
Father McLaughlin arrived at Archmere Academy on August 17, 1970. Freshly ordained, he had expected to return to Bishop Newman High School in Philadelphia, where he had participated in a pilot program preparing Norbertine seminarians to teach at their alma mater. Instead, he was assigned—temporarily, he was assured—to a school he barely knew, replacing a retiring teacher and moving into an almost empty residence on campus. It was an inauspicious beginning to what would become one of the longest-lasting tenures in Archmere’s history. Father McLaughlin’s first impressions of Archmere were stark. His room was nearly bare, furnished with little more than a bed. There were no shared meals yet, and on his first night, he ate dinner at a restaurant along Philadelphia Pike. Yet what struck him most was not the austerity of his surroundings but the rigor of the institution he had joined. Within days, he learned that Archmere sophomores were expected to complete a demanding summer reading program—ten books, including

Over time, Father McLaughlin’s teaching portfolio expanded. By the mid-1970s, he was teaching Speech in addition to English and moderating the forensics team, a role he assumed with little prior experience but growing enthusiasm. In 1978, he was asked to teach Marriage and the Family, a course that would become one of the most meaningful ministries of his career. Less academic and more pastoral than his previous subjects, the class allowed him to engage students at moments of vulnerability and transition. It was here, he later reflected, that teaching became ministry in its fullest sense. These years coincided with one of the most significant transitions in Archmere’s history: the move to coeducation. In 1975, Archmere admitted its first female students— thirty freshmen, fifteen sophomores, four juniors, and one senior. The change came with little preparation or faculty discussion, yet its impact was immediate. Father McLaughlin taught the first cohort of girls as sophomores and witnessed firsthand how their presence transformed classroom dynamics. Though vastly outnumbered, these young women were confident, engaged, and academically strong. Looking back, he marveled at how smoothly the transition unfolded and how coeducation ultimately strengthened the school. In 1983, Father McLaughlin’s path took an unexpected turn. After more than a decade in the classroom, he was appointed Headmaster of Archmere Academy. It was not a role he sought. In fact, during his interview with the board’s search committee, he spent most of the time
explaining why he did not want the job. He even chose the interview date—February 25, the anniversary of his mother’s death—hoping her intercession might spare him the appointment. It did not.
late 1990s, Father McLaughlin left Archmere in 1997 and spent several years away from the school. In 2001, he was invited back—not as Headmaster, but as Chaplain. It was a homecoming marked by healing and continuity.
When the Norbertine council ultimately selected him, Father McLaughlin wept. He understood that accepting the role meant relinquishing daily classroom contact with students, especially the Marriage and the Family course he loved. Yet he also recognized the responsibility before him. He assumed the headmastership that June and would serve in the role for thirteen years, from 1983 to 1996.
In this role, Father McLaughlin found a renewed sense of purpose. He celebrated daily Mass, led Kairos retreats, offered regular confession, and became a visible spiritual presence on campus. Later, he also served as Director of Mission and Heritage, helping to articulate and preserve Archmere’s Norbertine identity during a time of increasing lay leadership.
As headmaster, Father McLaughlin emphasized balance between academic excellence and spiritual formation. Archmere’s discipline and rigor were nonnegotiable: summer reading, strict dress codes, punctuality, and demanding coursework defined the student experience. But he also believed that knowledge alone was insufficient. Drawing on the school’s motto, Pietas et Scientia, he argued that the key word was et—“and.” Education, he believed, must hold wisdom and reverence together.
In 2006, Father McLaughlin was once again asked to step into leadership, this time as Headmaster. Though intended as a one-year commitment, he remained for four years, guiding Archmere through transition while continuing his chaplaincy. Health concerns eventually led him to step aside in 2010, making way for the school’s first lay Head of School, Michael Marinelli, Ed.D. ’76, a former student he himself had taught.

Mass before games. Young people sought him out for confession or conversation, not because they must, but because they trust him. His connection to students was neither performative nor nostalgic; it was grounded in consistency, humility, and care. Father McLaughlin often reflected on the setbacks of his life—rejections, unexpected assignments, losses that once felt decisive. Yet with time, each became a doorway. Not returning to Neumann led him to Archmere. Being denied entry to the Norbertines led him to college and, ultimately, to ordination. Leaving Archmere led him back in a new and vital role. What once appeared as loss revealed itself as grace.
Father McLaughlin regularly donated to Archmere personal gifts that he would receive from individuals to thank him for baptisms, weddings, and funerals he performed and at his birthday or at Christmas. Campus News Daniel Hickey, Ed.D., ’89 Appointed Head of School-Elect Over the last 16 years, Archmere has been fortunate to have had the leadership of Michael Marinelli, Ed.D. ’76. He has guided Archmere through a significant transition as its first lay head of school, while also advancing the mission, strengthening enrollment, establishing financial stability, enhancing the campus, and leading a strong response to COVID. Two years ago, Michael informed the board of his desire to retire after the completion of the capital campaign, "Let’s Renovate the House" for the newly refreshed Rocco A. and Mary Abessinio Performing Arts Center. Beginning in March of 2025, the board began a search for his successor.

The Archmere Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of Daniel Hickey, Ed.D. ’89, as Archmere Academy’s next Head of School, effective July 1, 2026. After an extensive national and international search, the board determined Dr. Hickey as the candidate best suited to lead Archmere into its next chapter. His deep ties to Archmere, extensive leadership experience, and lifelong commitment to independent school education uniquely position him to guide our community forward while honoring the school’s mission and rich traditions. 14

A search committee engaged in an exhaustive process to identify the best person to build on Michael’s work and lead the school into the future. The search began with approximately twenty applicants from across the nation and internationally. After an initial round of interviews, the search committee invited three extremely qualified candidates to campus for full-day in-person sessions, meeting with panels of faculty/staff, parents, alumni, and students. Each also met with the search committee and specific administrators and attended an informal social event. Throughout the process, the search committee collected feedback from all the engaged constituents and provided a recommendation to the full board, and the board expressed its full support of Dr. Hickey’s nomination. Dr. Hickey’s return is a homecoming. He transferred to Archmere halfway through his freshman year and immediately felt the welcoming spirit of the school and “found his place here.” As a student, he took advantage of all that Archmere offered academically, artistically, and athletically. He excelled academically, graduating magna cum laude and as a member of the National Honor Society. He received a certificate of honor in Art at graduation, and he played varsity football and was part of the track team. Following graduation, Dr. Hickey attended Dickinson College, where he received a B.A. cum laude, majoring in English and minoring in Fine Arts, and where he was a captain of the football team and All-Conference three years. Upon graduating, Dr. Hickey worked in the admissions offices of Dickinson and American University, where he also earned an M.A. in Literature. At the invitation of Fr. Timothy F. Mullen, O. Praem. ’65 (then Headmaster), Dr. Hickey returned to Archmere in 1998 to lead admissions, teach English, and coach football.

Campus News COLLEGE COUNSELING OFFICE WELCOMES NINETY COLLEGE VISITORS By Patricia Maher, Assistant Director of College Counseling The College Counseling Office has been a hub of activity during the first semester—family meetings, college essay revisions, preparation of application materials, mock interview opportunities, and more! In the midst of all this activity, the office has hosted 90 admissions representatives from colleges and universities across the country and around the world. These 50-minute sessions which begin in early September and run through October 31, are integral to the college application process and are mutually beneficial to Archmere students as well as to the universities that visit. Most college visits are hosted in the Counseling Conference Room and allow for a small, individualized roundtable conversation between students and the admissions representative. While sessions usually begin with an overview of the university’s characteristics and priorities, as well as details about the application process itself, most of the time is devoted to questions and answers. Students have an opportunity to ask questions ranging from popular traditions on campus to typical travel arrangements to and from campus, as well as helpful hints for supplemental essays. Seniors in the Class of 2026 appreciated this intimate, conversational setting. “I think the opportunity is extremely valuable because it made the whole process feel more personal and real,” said Susie Shipley ’26, who attended the Wake Forest session and was recently accepted to the university. “My application Susan Shipley ’26 wasn’t just one out of thousands anymore. They could actually connect my name and story to a real person they met, which made the whole application experience feel more meaningful.” This type of connection with the representative is especially helpful for students who haven’t had the 16

chance to visit a distant college. “Archmere’s hosting of different colleges offered me a great opportunity to learn more about schools from different regions that were difficult for me to travel to,” said Don Bogey ’26, who attended sessions such as The University of Alabama and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
In an era when so much business can be conducted virtually and via email, it may seem like an anachronism that college admissions professionals are still traveling the country, physically visiting high schools and meeting with interested applicants. However, admissions representatives find these interactions invaluable as well. “Not only are high school visits critical for sharing updates to our application processes and timelines (as our requirements and deadlines can change from year to year), but these meetings also engage and excite—we hope that our explanations and information about our schools can inspire high school students to see themselves as college students at our institutions, thus motivating them to apply,” shared Kari Berton, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions at Penn State University. College admissions officials also appreciate the opportunity to make a lasting, meaningful impression on Archmere students during the application process. “In the end, we may be competing against other top universities for the students we admit, and we want them to have had a chance to ask any questions they might have and to have a good picture of Yale as they make their decision,” said Margit Dahl, Senior Admissions Officer at Yale University. In-school college visits are predominantly helpful for seniors as they finalize application decisions; however, junior students are also invited to attend during their free periods and may request permission to attend up to two sessions during a class period.
Archmere Introduces Engineering & Design Practicum By Katie Eissler-Thiel, Principal Since 2022, Archmere’s Physical & Life Sciences Department has taught an Advanced Cancer Research & Analysis (ACRA) course, which offers an interdisciplinary glimpse into cancer research through both biological and data science lenses. Over the past three years, Archmere has continued to strengthen this course in partnership with CHOP & D3b. This connection, facilitated by Dr. Jay Storm ’86, has proven to be a transformative interdisciplinary opportunity for our students, both inside and outside the classroom. Replete with guest speakers, field trips to CHOP/D3b, internship opportunities, and university-level poster presentations, ACRA is a course that allows students to plug into the everevolving worlds of medicine and data science. It is now Archmere’s desire to expand this template into the field of engineering, a discipline that relies on design thinking and a high degree of interdisciplinarity, both of which are intertwined with Archmere’s mission and academic philosophies. Thanks to a generous donation from the King Children’s Charitable Fund, Archmere has been able to make this new, full-year course entitled Engineering & Design Practicum a reality by expanding upon our recent Honors Engineering course. The primary goal of the program is to immerse Engineering & Design Practicum students in the day-to-day life of an engineer through networking, real-world problem-solving, and design-thinking alongside current professionals in the field. Direct instruction will come courtesy of faculty member and Archmere alum JR Creekmore, who will call upon partners to infuse the curricula with their expertise and lived experience. Creekmore, a graduate of the Class of 2011, is no stranger to the excellence of an Archmere education or the power of the Archmere professional network. Engineering is often described less as a discipline and more as a way of thinking. In a world in which anything can be explained with the click of a button, educators must put more stock in bolstering initiatives that AI cannot replace, such as creative vision, embodied experience, intuitive understanding of human needs, wisdom from lived experience, and ethical and responsible decisionmaking and problem-solving. Engineering is certainly a field that requires a balance of these qualities, coupled with a subject-specific expertise (mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc.). In the past year, Archmere underwent two reflective processes that position us well as we plan for the future: a Middle State Reaccreditation and a Strategic Planning
process. Both of these undertakings yielded similar results: a desire to invest additional time, energy, and resources in both experiential learning and partnerships. Engineering & Design Practicum marries these two goals, as students are tasked with hands-on, project-based learning alongside “partners” in the field. Speaking on the class, JR Creekmore said, “This course is an exciting opportunity for students to learn advanced topics and apply these concepts and others to real-world problems. Already in the first weeks of the course, I have been amazed at the students’ desire to think deeply and create solutions.” At Back To School Night, one parent quipped, “Thank you, Mr. Creekmore, for making my child use a power tool.” Suffice it to say, these Auks will be learning an array of skill sets, from soup to nuts.

Campus News Fifty Years of Coeducation at Archmere By John Jordan ’80, Director of Development and Constituent Relations On September 5, 1975, fifty young women walked onto Archmere’s campus for the first time as enrolled students. Their arrival marked a profound transformation in the school’s history. 1 senior, 4 juniors, 12 sophomores, and 33 freshmen stepped onto campus that fall. An allboys boarding and day school established in 1932 by the Norbertine order, Archmere’s enrollment had been declining and the administration’s decision to admit women forever changed the school community. The change was announced quietly, almost modestly, in that year’s 1976 Patio yearbook: page 71 is the first reference to the presence of women, modestly introducing the start of the first female basketball team. “They said it couldn’t be done. Some say it still wasn’t. Others say it shouldn’t have been. But suddenly, almost without warning, Archmere had a girls’ basketball team. What’s more, a whole new girls’ scholastic sports program had begun.” That wry, understated note belied the magnitude of the changing community. Coeducation required rethinking nearly every aspect of student life—from uniforms and athletics to facilities and faculty preparation. “The fact that much of the faculty had never taught female students meant they had to clean up their language and some of their more aggressive teaching techniques,” remembered Anne Marie Borneman ’77, one of just three girls in her class that first year. “There were challenges no one anticipated— bathrooms, sports, even basic logistics—but there were also teachers and Norbertines who offered unconditional support. In a short period of time, we integrated into the fabric of the school, taking on leadership roles in Anne Marie Borneman ’77 government, publications, and sports.” The first 50 young women quickly reshaped the spirit on campus. Marcy Aitken, hired as gym teacher and coach, established the school’s first girls’ athletic programs, 18

including volleyball, basketball, and softball. In June of 1976, Geralyn Savini (Green) ’76 became Archmere’s first female graduate, paving the way for the Class of 1979— the first to spend all four years as a coed cohort. Gerri asserted: “To me, the real first graduates of Archmere were that freshman class [Class of 1979] that came in. They were the ones who had the whole experience. I was just here more to become like a spokeswoman, as it were, to sort of focus on the energy of the positive nature of femaleness at Archmere and how it could lead to new and better things.” For many of these pioneering students, Archmere represented both challenge and welcome. Jamie Green ’80 recalled, “I felt welcome to the Archmere family immediately. Being female, not Catholic, and having attended public school, I was not sure how I would fit in. The smaller class size and variety of activities encouraged crossover among friend groups. The Archmere guys are the best—some of my favorite humans! They were so good to us, even holding the doors. It was a big surprise when I got to college and the guys let the doors close on me.” Jamie also shared how deeply Archmere’s faculty and clergy supported her family when her father passed away, recalling that “Frs. Cuccia and McLaughlin attended the funeral and checked in on us regularly. They carried us through that difficult time.” Jamie Green ’80 For Kathleen Johnson ’80, transferring from public school to Archmere was a leap into the unknown—but it opened new doors. “I didn’t make the cheerleading squad, and there was no chorus, but that gave me the chance to play softball with star players like Karen DiNardo and Mary Anne O’Brien Slowik. I can still hear Mrs. Aitken yelling, ’Ya gotta dig, dig, dig to first base!’” She found her voice in the newly formed Liturgy Singers, later known as Blaise and the Flames, and performed in musicals Good News and
Irene. When her mother passed away her senior year, “the entire Archmere community wrapped their arms around me,” she remembered. “Their love and support meant the world to me.” What began as an experiment quickly became essential to Archmere’s identity. Within a few short years, women led student government, Kathleen Johnson ’80 edited publications, and starred in athletics and the arts. In 1992, the creation of the Alumni Sports Hall of Fame began honoring female athletes and coaches. In 2011, Kathryn Cunningham Hall ’04 became the first female Alumna of the Year, followed by Carol Reardon Thomson ’79 in 2013. And in 2020, the appointment of Katie Eissler Thiel as Archmere’s first female principal marked another milestone in the ongoing Auk journey. Thiel noted, “I entered the Archmere community at a much different time than the female trailblazers of the ’70s and ’80s. That is to say that male and female representation on
the faculty and student body was fairly equal. However, with no prior female principals or heads of school, there was a sort of barrier—perhaps unseen and unspoken— that young women felt when it came to agency and representation on campus. The importance of being a strong, empathetic role model for ALL young people, regardless of sex, is always my primary responsibility; however, it is not lost on me that, for the first time, the young women are seeing themselves reflected in the role of principal. I aspire to lead with the same zeal, trust, and strength that those first females at Archmere exhibited 50 years ago!” Today, the presence of women permeates every dimension of Archmere life—from academics and leadership to service, faith, and athletics. Archmere’s women continue to distinguish themselves in classrooms, colleges, and careers around the world. Fifty years after those first 50 girls stepped onto campus, their influence endures. They helped Archmere grow— not just in number, but in heart, vision, and purpose. “The experience of breaking ground and paving the way for future classes of strong, successful women students was challenging, exhilarating, and something that only a sixteen-year-old would even consider taking on,” said Borneman. “But it was worth every moment.” Fifty years later, it’s clear: the women of Archmere didn’t just join the community—they transformed it.

Report on the State of the Academy Dear Friends of Archmere, Each year, the Archmere story is written anew—in classrooms and rehearsal spaces, on playing fields and in quiet moments of reflection in the Oratory, in friendships formed, and in the acts of compassion that shape our students’ daily lives. This past year was no exception. Our collective community—students, faculty, parents, alumni, friends—once again demonstrated what makes Archmere extraordinary: a commitment to one another, to our mission, and to the future of this special place. We celebrated a historic milestone with the completion of the $6.8 million Rocco A. and Mary Abessinio Performing Arts Campaign, a project made possible through the belief that student creativity and expression deserve a space that inspires and elevates their voices. That belief—and the generosity behind it—captured the very heart of the Auk community. Our annual giving results tell a similar story. The Archmere Fund reached $650,519, an increase of $96,314 over last year and a reminder that the strength of Archmere lies in its people. During our four-day Giving Days in May, 237 donors came together to raise $88,411, surpassing last year’s totals in both participation and dollars. Every gift represents a story—a memory, a moment, a belief in paying forward to the next generation of young people who will find their purpose here. We are deeply grateful to our parent organizations and alumni leadership groups whose volunteerism and philanthropy set the tone for our broader community. The Mothers’ Guild, Fathers’ Club, and Alumni Association together contributed mission-driven support for the Archmere Fund, the Performing Arts Center, and scholarship programs. Their generosity reflects a legacy of service rooted in the Norbertine values that have shaped Archmere for more than 90 years. This year’s theme—Keeping the Momentum. Ahead of us is the crucial work of strengthening our athletic facilities, ensuring that our student-athletes have safe, modern, and inspiring spaces in which to grow. Alumni News Arthur Kerns ’56 entered the Killer Nashville International Writers Conference, a premier forum for crime writing and storytelling founded by bestselling author Clay Stafford. In late August, Blood Moon won the 2025 Killer Nashville Claymore Award for Best Investigator. Another of his manuscripts, set in 1941 in Argentina, was honored as the Claymore judges’ top pick in the historical category.
Dr. Andrew Wozniak ’96 , Associate Professor in the University of Delaware’s School of Marine Science and Policy, and his team of scientists, recently witnessed a rare seafloor eruption 1,300 miles west of Costa Rica. This was the first time scientists had witnessed a clearly active eruption along the midocean ridge, a volcanic mountain chain that stretches about 40,000 miles around the globe.
Kevin C. Donovan, Esq. ’77 traveled to England and spoke to a British audience of American Civil War enthusiasts and members of the American Civil War Round Table of the United Kingdom at London’s Civil Service Club. Kevin’s presentation topic—“The Court Martial of Fitz John Porter: Fair or Fixed?”—was a legal analysis of the Porter trial, while also discussing the historical and political events that led to Maj. Gen. Porter’s dismissal from the U.S. Army during the Civil War.
Michael Phillips, CPA ’97 will join University of Virginia’s Finance as Assistant Vice President and University Controller, effective September 22, 2025. Michael comes to this role from the Office of the Provost, where he has served as Associate Vice Provost for Budget & Financial Planning. In that capacity, he has guided the University’s academic budget and worked closely with our community on tuition, financial aid, and long-range planning.
Jennifer Green Broomall ’88 received the Retiring Teacher Award by Delaware Music Educators Association Executive Board. The award is for a retiring teacher whose advocacy for the arts and contributions to music education throughout Delaware have made a positive impact. Jenny was a member of the Mastersingers and completed her degree in music education at Ithaca College.
Dr. Drew Fagan ’97 was the recipient of the 2026 Distinguished Public Service Award for the American Association for Applied Linguistics. For the last three decades, Dr. Drew Fagan has dedicated himself to raising the greater public’s awareness on the importance of multilingualism. Currently a clinical professor at the University of Maryland, he directs (and developed) the state’s first

Andrew Huddleston ’02 returned to the US after spending 13 years living and working in the UK. He has taken a job as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. John Bonanni ’03 won the 2025 Donald Hall Prize for Poetry, judged by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers. John is a Cape Cod–based writer who serves as founding editor of the Cape Cod Review.
Brannock Furey ’11 married Eliza Wood on August 5, 2024. Don Riccardo Nepi, a Catholic priest, performed the ceremony at Chiesa di San Salvatore in Ognissanti in Florence, Italy. Brannock and Eliza currently reside in New York City.

Addie Trudel ’19 graduated from the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University with a BS in newspaper and on-line journalism. Through Newhouse, Addie was able to attend the 2024 Democratic National Convention as a fully credentialed member of the press, which resulted in two of her articles being published in NJ.Com and The Star-Ledger, respectively. Addie also has an upcoming investigative reporting article slated for publication in the Democrat & Chronicle.
Numerous alums and parents joined the McNichol family (Erin ’92, Bridget ’94, Megan ’98, Kari ’00, Ella Joyce ’23, Mac Joyce ’26, and Christopher Davis ’90) over Labor Day weekend for the inaugural DIII Inlet Walk in honor of Dennis J. McNichol III. The Avalon to Stone Harbor beach walk raised funds for brain cancer research, with all proceeds directly supporting the groundbreaking work led by Dr. Jay Storm ’86 and the team at the Center for Data Driven Discovery in Biomedicine (D3b) at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Storm currently serves as Chief of Neurosurgery at CHOP and was a trusted guide to the family during their dad’s battle with glioblastoma. Over $50,000 was raised through the inaugural event. The McNichol family thanks all who joined us and invite others to participate in 2026! On May 2nd, thirteen members from the Class of 1966 gathered at the Ridley Township Marina in PA for another informal mini-reunion. This was the largest gathering of the class in recent years. It was a true mid-Atlantic group, with alums from PA, NJ, DE and MD. The guys swapped old stories about school and sports and caught up on the families of their fellow grads. It was the first time for some to attend this annual event. Not to mention that some men had not seen their fellow alums since 1966! They truly enjoyed their time and are looking forward to their 60th class reunion next fall.

The Design Interest Group (DIG) of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) has recognized Archmere alumna and teacher Stephanie Silverman ’00 with the National Outstanding Design Educator of the Year Award. This award of distinction recognizes an individual for their exemplary contributions to the field of Design Education and/or their advocacy of Design and Design Education. A National Board-Certified Art educator and leader in the field of Design Education, Stephanie has presented original design curriculum, best practices, and design thinking methodologies seven times at the national level at the National Art Education National Convention. Her design students have won a record number of Scholastic Art Awards across design categories including Fashion, Jewelry, Design, Architectural, and Industrial Design for the past five years (75 in total) for the State of Delaware, including a record number of awards in the category of Architectural & Industrial Design and Fashion Design (2025). Stephanie will be honored at the NAEA Convention in Chicago, IL in March 2026, where she will also be presenting her chapter for a forthcoming book on Design Education with Dr. Robin Vande Zande, an instructional resource that provides K-12 teachers with strategies and pedagogical practices for implementing design-based learning in their classrooms.
Danyele Dove ’93, Archmere Academy Director of Counseling and DEI, was presented with the Dorothy Height Justice Award in honor of her remarkable dedication to the YWCA of Delaware. The award, named for the iconic racial justice revolutionary Dorothy Height, is specifically for an honoree who embodies the same passion and zeal as Ms. Height. Dorothy Height is openly acknowledged as the first person and woman who was a leader during the civil rights movement to recognize inequality for women and African-Americans concurrently, as the two concerns had been viewed separately prior to Height’s revitalization. Planned Giving Spotlight: Carmelina D’Arro, DMD ’85 Dr. Carmelina D’Arro ’85 has long credited Archmere Academy with setting her on the path to a fulfilling and multifaceted career. “Neither of my parents had the privilege of going to college or even high school, nor did we have the funds to attend Archmere at the time,” she recalls. “But thanks to a generous scholarship and the fine education I received at Archmere, I was able to reach my dreams, first as a concert pianist and then moving on to enjoy a meaningful career as a public health dentist, author, and educator. I want to help other students like me enjoy the opportunities made possible through an Archmere education.” Carmelina’s video collection and text, The Mindful Health Care Professional: A Path to Provider Wellness and Patientcentered Care, recently received the 2025 Award for Excellence from the Association of American Publishers in the category of Biological and Life Sciences. Her lifelong commitment to education, the arts, and wellness continues to guide her giving today. As Archmere celebrates 50 years of coeducation, Carmelina’s story exemplifies the school’s enduring mission to empower all students to achieve their fullest potential. When considering how to give back to Archmere in a meaningful way, Carmelina decided to include the school in her estate plans, thereby joining the Founder Society (Archmere’s planned giving society) as a way to help ensure the school’s continued success for generations to come. She takes special interest in Archmere’s programs that encourage students to explore their talents across disciplines—from the sciences and humanities to the arts. Among these is the Helena Raskob Arts Institute, which offers private lessons and chamber music opportunities for student musicians on campus, fostering artistic growth and collaboration within the Archmere community. Carmelina knows firsthand how transformative an Archmere education can be. By supporting the school through planned giving and celebrating the work of today’s students in science, the arts, and all fields of study, she and others in the Founder Society are helping to carry forward the mission and spirit that makes such a difference in the lives of our students.

In Memoriam Larry Osborne and dance instructor for the annual student musical productions. Adding to her full schedule, she served for a time on the student discipline committee and as Chair of the World Languages and Cultures Department. In 1981, she married long-time teacher, Paul Clemens, who taught history, English, French, and history of music, and served as chair of the English and history departments at various times in his career. Mr. Clemens retired in 1992, and Mrs. Clemens retired in 1999. They enjoyed several years of retirement and travel together until Mr. Clemens passed away on August 17, 2006. Mrs. Clemens continued to keep in touch with her colleagues from Archmere, who also retired over the years. For over two decades, she volunteered at the Dental Clinic at Wilmington Hospital Health Center (CCHS) and was a docent at the Rockwood Museum, and filled her days with friends, travel, cooking, and the many cultural interests she enjoyed. She passed away suddenly on April 16, 2023, and her funeral arrangements were private. The Archmere administration was informed of her passing away in October 2025.
Mrs. Pauletta Sypeck Clemens In the fall of 1975, Pauletta Sypeck arrived at Archmere as a substitute French and English teacher for the first semester of the year. The following year, there was a full-time teaching position available, and then Ms. Sypeck began her 24-year teaching career at Archmere. Over the years, in addition to her teaching duties, she became moderator of the French National Honor Society and the French Club. She would also moderate the AFS (American Field Service) program, which involved coordinating Archmere host families for international students studying for a year at Archmere, and conversely, organizing Archmere students’ abroad studies. She also lent her dance talent by serving as choreographer
Mrs. Pauletta Clemens will be remembered especially at our annual Memorial Mass, where her name will be added to the list of faculty, staff, and alumni who have passed away. May our collective prayer as a school community be one of gratitude for the life and legacy of Mrs. Clemens, and may she now rest in peace, together with Paul, her husband, and all those who have known and loved her.
