AALTO’S GEOGRAPHY Alvar Aalto(fig.1) was born into a surveyor’s middle—class family in the small South—Ostrobothnian hamlet of Kuortane ʎ , but from an early age he set his ambitions high. Throughout his early years, Aalto kept moving towards centres of power. He attended lyceum in the small town of Jyväskylä in Central Finland(fig.2) ʏ , studied architecture in Helsinki, moved with his family to Turku(fig.3) ʐ , the old capital on the southwestern coast, where he enthusiastically adopted the ideas of modernity.

Finally the Aalto family settled in the capital, Helsinki.

In Finland, modern architecture first gained ground in Turku towards the end of the 1920s. At the time of boat travel, the nearness of Turku to Stockholm, the Nordic centre of early modern aspirations, gave the old capital an advantage. The architectural environment there was then more liberal and progressive than in Helsinki, where authoritative traditionalists were outspokenly critical of the emerging functionalist style.

In the November 1930 issue of Tulenkantajat (The torch bearers) (fig.4), a seminal literary magazine that strongly supported the modern ideology in literature, the arts and architecture, as well as in life style, published a photograph of the newly completed Turun Sanomat Building designed by Aalto in 1927—29 along with the polemical question: “Is Turku the most modern city in Finland?” ʑ A caption to a photograph of the roof terrace of this programmatically modern building stated explicitly: “The modernist architecture of Turku(…)has already become proverbial.” ʒ

Several projects by Erik Bryggman and Alvar Aalto, who also worked as partners for some time, conceived and built in Turku during the 1920s and early 1930s, were forerunners of functionalist architecture in Finland(fig.5). ʓ The City of Turku 700th Anniversary Exhibition designed by them in 1929 marked the breakthrough of functionalism in Finland in the same way that the Stockholm Exhibition did on the opposite side of the Gulf of Finland the following year.

At the time the Paimio Sanatorium — twenty kilometres southeast of Turku — was inaugurated in 1933 after four years of intense and controversial design work and construction, Aalto was no longer professionally tied to Turku. A move to Helsinki promised new challenges and opportunities. The capital had also become more central in the cultural and economic situation of the early 1930s and the new era of air travel. In fact, even before settling in Helsinki, Aalto had already expanded his interests and activities into the international sphere and adopted a cosmopolitan identity. ʔ He was to become one of the most internationally oriented and widely known Finns of his time.

In August 1933 the Aaltos arrived in the capital full of expectations. Alvar’s international reputation had grown quickly through the worldwide publication of the Paimio Sanatorium — immediately acknowledged as a functionalist masterpiece — exhibitions of his furniture and his membership of the CIAM. Aalto had every reasons to expect a respectful professional welcome and rewarding commissions in his new home city.

ʎ At the time of Alvar’s early childhood at the turn of the century, the hamlet of Kuortane around the village church had less than one thousand inhabitants. Information provided

by Tuula Koistinen, Kuortane Congregation, March 2003. ʏ Aalto’s parents moved from Kuortane to Jyväskylä in 1903 where Alvar began his studies at the Lyceum in 1908. In this town of some 3000 inhabitants at that time, the family lived first in a rented flat at Väinönkatu 12, but two years later Alvar’s father bought a house at Harjukatu 10 (nowadays Yliopistokatu 22). ʐ The Aaltos lived in Turku in 1927—33. At that time Turku was a city of 48,000 inhabitants. The population of Helsinki at the time the Aalto family settled there was 217,000. ʑ Tulenkantajat［The torch bearers］. Vol. 6/1930, cover ʒ Ibid. cit, 87 ʓ Gustaf Strengell, the esteemed architectural critic, who gave a decisive impulse to rationalist thinking in Finnish architecture through a pamphlet he and Sigurd Frosterus wrote against the regressive tendencies in the Helsinki Railway Station Competition of 1904, wrote a parody on the young Alvar Aalto and his ambitions in Hufvudstadsbladet, the leading Swedish language newspaper in Finland. Quoting an imaginary American architectural journal“The Architectural Tomfoolery”, he wrote:“There is practically no architecture, nor are there any architects in the Finland of today, save Mr. Aalto’s genius, again become elevated to the rank and position of Finland’s cultural centre.”Gustaf Strengell,“Alvar Aalto: Finlands första funktionalist” ［Alvar Aalto: Finland’s first functionalist］. Strengell was an important supporter of the young Aalto, who always spoke respectfully of his elder colleague. ʔ The young Aalto was keen on projecting a cosmopolitan image of himself, and he custom—arily arranged a press conference after returning from his frequent travels abroad.“Early morning coffee in Paris, lunch in Amsterdam, afternoon coffee in Hamburganddinnerin Malmo”, was how he described the mobile and cosmopolitan life of the modern man. THE AALTOS MOVE TO HELSINKI This proved not to be the case. Already a couple of years before moving to Helsinki, Aalto had suffered a major professional setback in the capital, when the classicist architect J.S. Siren was chosen as professor of architecture instead of him at the Helsinki University of Technology, Alvar’s and Aino’s alma mater. ʕ Nevertheless, in the early years of the 1930s functionalism began to find support also in Helsinki. Arkkitehti, the Finnish architectural journal, turned into an important supporter of the new style through its newly appointed editors Hilding Ekelund and Martti Välikangas, who even published rejected functionalist competition entries in their journal. ʖ However, regardless of his competition, ʗ Aalto remained without commissions in his new

home. ʘ In fact, his first executed commissions to appear in the Helsinki centre streetscape were the Erottaja Emergency Shelter Entrance at the intersection of two main roads in 1941—51 (Aalto had won the competition for the Traffic System and Emergency to the Emergency Shelter in 1941) and the Finnish Engineers’ Association Building(fig.6) at the southern edge of the business district in 1948—53, more than 15 years after he had settled in Helsinki. ʙ Regardless of his failure to receive commissions in Helsinki, he was busy in other parts of the country, particularly through his seminal industrial commissions, such as the Sunila Cellulose Factory and residential area in Kotka where the most active period of construction took place in 1936—37. In the late 1940s and the early 1950s, Aalto finally won several significant competitions ʚ and eventually built some of his finest buildings also in and nearby Helsinki.

ʕ In his evaluation of the applicants for the professorship, Onni Tarjanne, a respected architect and professor, expressed serious concern with the functionalist ideology while acknowledging Aalto’s promising talent:“Undoubtedly he is very talented and possesses noteworthy artistic qualifications, which will probably in the future, if given the opportunity, even leave beautiful traces in our architecture. He has, however, mainly worked in the wake of the currently emerging fashionable architecture, functionalism, a style the development potential, duration and permanent value of which cannot be foreseen. ”Raijaetiisa Heinonen, FunktionaIismin lopimurto [The breakthrough of functionalism]. Most ofthe prizes, however, went to Erik Bryggman, Hilding Ekelund, PE. Blomstedt, Yrjo Lindegren, Erkki Huttunen or other lesser— known Finnish functionalists. ʘ In his parody quoted above, Strengell also re—marks on Aalto's lack of recognition and work in the capital: ”An additional reason for the fact that Aalto is so extremely little known in Helsinki is naturally the condition that so far he has not been given an opportunity to execute any architectural work in the capital of the nation."Strengell, 1932. ʙ In 1936—37 the Aaltos designed the interiors of the Savoy Restaurant on Etela—Esplanadi 14, in 1942 they designed a temporary wooden entrance structure for the Erottaja Emergency Shelter, and in 1942, 1947 and 1948 they executed several industrial buildings for the Stromberg company in the Pitajanmaki district on the northern edge of Helsinki. ʚ The most significant competitions in the second halt of the 1930s won by Aalto were the Finnish pavilions for the Paris World's Fair in 1936 and the Neonrk World’s Fair in 1938.Adecade laterAalto won the competitions for the head offices for National Pensions Institute in 1948, the Plan for Otaniemi (Helsinki University of Technology) in 1949, and the Saynatsalo Town Hall in 1949, all of which turned into seminal projects of his post—war period.

大神像的當代社會淵源：從佛光山佛館大佛談起 The Landmark Meaning of the Big God Idols in Taiwan since 1960s.

With the improvement in economic conditions and tourism in Taiwan during the 1960’s, statues of The Big God Idols began to appear throughout the island as dramatic landmarks. The statues were not merely architectural constructs, but symbolic "regional happenings" created by the religious establishment with social, cultural and historic significance. This article begins in 2003 with the statue of Buddha in The Fo-Guang-Shan Monastery and ends in 1961 with The Giant Buddha statue of Ba-Gua-Shan in Chang-Hua, reviewing the development of Buddha statues of the past 60 years. It discusses the meaning of the idol and analyzes the connection of its socio-economic background in order to understand the social and cultural meaning of the statues of The Big God Idols.

大 佛 為 一 方 地 景 中 的 突 出 標 的， 可 通 稱 為 一 地 區 的 地 標

上舉，猶如海中燈塔，左手低垂呈接引之勢，表示接引眾生。

（landmark）。所謂地標，最初係如石頭、樹木一樣標示的一

前方廣場環繞四百八十尊佛，表現一佛出世、千佛護持的姿態，

種邊界標的。其定義是地景、聚落中具有特色的標的，從一定

氣象萬千。

距離之外容易被看見或辨識，特別是可供確認其方位所在。其

接引大佛的出現，根據《佛光山開山故事》內的介紹，大佛城

次，地標是標示歷史重要性的建築或紀念物，甚至可以用來標

的出現，係星雲法師一段靈感啟示所致，也才在此建立大佛，

誌一段特殊的重要階段或轉折點。

他是如此描述的：「開山初期，我住在西邊的房子，記得六、 七月時節，天氣很熱，有一天晚上，大約九點鐘的時候，…… 往東山地區瞭望，忽然看到一道金光出現，心想，這是哪裡的

光呢？……那個時候，山上還在開發中，東山的區域是沒有住 家，也沒有電線桿的。既然沒有電燈，怎會有光呢？是不是佛

佛光山大佛城接引大佛座落於大悲殿東側東山嶺上，與大智殿

菩薩指引我要到那裡去開發，讓佛光普照？因為有了這個靈

相毗鄰，緊鄰台 21 線道路，旁側則是高屏溪（下淡水溪），

東側數十里外即可目睹佛像慈容。大佛身像於 1973 年動土興

此大佛全長一百二十餘尺，當時號稱全臺戶外最大立佛，也是

佛光大佛參考唐代佛像造型，「佛頂上螺髮，正中突顯肉髻， 佛面圓滿，額頭寬廣，五官適中，眼瞼下垂，耳長及肩，佛身

星雲法師代表的神聖中心為其一，而大佛所凝塑的場所神聖則

豐腴魁梧，袒露前胸，衣襟斜披，掩蓋左臂左胸，一端垂及腰

是其二，對佛光山而言，接引大佛的出現，於四十多年前第一

腹以下，掩蓋雙腿，另一端延伸背部遮蔽右肩，裸露右臂。雙

次正式向信徒宣告，大佛即是神聖世界的中心，以此定位佛光

腿結跏趺，坐在束腰仰俯蓮瓣紋座的釋迦佛，兩手作說法式，

山為全台信徒的信仰中心。

二、佛光山佛館大佛：神聖世界中心的再塑

佛館的設計理念如星雲大師所說：「佛陀並不需要我們禮拜供

養，但眾生需要藉此啟發善念、淨化心靈。透過禮拜佛塔，與 佛館全名為佛陀紀念館，為恭奉佛牙真身舍利而興建，於 2011

佛陀的法身接觸，將思慕之情昇華為學習佛德，實踐於日常生

年落成。佛館沿大樹統嶺坑河谷面東而立，「前有八塔，後有

活。佛陀並不需要寶塔，而是眾生需要，我憑著這句話而建寶

大佛，南有靈山，北有祇園」，由東至西依序為禮敬大廳、成

佛大道及兩側八塔、萬人照相台、菩提廣場、本館及悲、智、 願、行四聖塔，以及最後方的佛光大佛等建築設施。

佛牙真實性的認證，係經貢噶多傑仁波切、密教四大教派十二 位德行兼備的仁波切聯名簽署，並經薩迦派的廷勤法王、寧瑪

佛館的興建緣於 1998 年貢噶多傑仁波切，將歷經波折由印度

派的頂果欽哲法王等高僧認證。來台當天台灣機場迎佛牙現場

至西藏，為了逃避文化大革命再由西藏攜出，並護藏近三十年

亦是一例，包括時任行政院長蕭萬長、考試院長許水德、立法

It outlines his attempt and development to continue the idea of the Viipuri library while he responded to the transformation in the United States and Finland’s Reconstruction after the war.

一、從維普里市立圖書館出發，適逢在美國的轉變，開展出新

生態學是研究有機體和周邊環境（包括生物與非生物環

內，原來松山菸廠主樓的其中一個中庭院落，由太研設計

的吳書原設計之後，成為台灣設計研究院成立「不只是圖

綜觀以上三個都市空間，「不只是圖書館」的戶外花園 強化內院的私密性，卻形成台北市民共有的，半公半私的 祕密花園；「取水口公園」作為唧筒室轉為博物館後的「台

新竹取水口公園是近年來新竹市政府積極整治公共空

座」，重新標記了農業時期的水路系統；社區居民也能自由

間的重要節點之一，在既有的灌溉系統上與市中心的隆恩

舒適的交往互動，這樣獨特的市民空間同時具有廣場與花

圳改造計畫相互聯通。然而相對於田中央聯合建築師事務

園的特質，也成為新型態的鄰里公園實驗。三個開放空間

所在材料與形式上的外放多元，王士芳建築師在取水口公
