By tracing the historical concept of lyricism, this study examines its core characteristics—emotion, imagination, and shared artistic experience—and extends them to architecture. Through space, form, materiality, and light, architecture can convey poetic expression, becoming a vessel for emotion and memory rather than merely a “machine for living.”
Architectural Lyricism emphasizes the perception and resonance of temporality, materiality, embodiment, the natural environment, and historical memory. By drawing on the material qualities of architecture, it highlights the interplay of time and space in shaping architectural atmosphere and explores the existential relationship between humans and the ever-changing world, fostering emotional empathy.
This paper explores Architectural Lyricism as a third path beyond functionality and formal aesthetics, addressing the contemporary architectural tendency to overemphasize utility and technology while neglecting emotion and poetry. Modern architecture, shaped by technological rationality and environmental management, has gradually distanced itself from artistic and spiritual dimensions, lacking sensitivity to human emotions and imagination.
This paper investigates the relationship between architecture, bodily perception, psychological empathy, and spiritual resonance, positioning architecture as a lyrical medium. It seeks to establish an architectural philosophy that transcends mere functionality and formal aesthetics, responding to the contemporary need for poetry and humanistic depth in architecture.
