Hesaidthatthedeeper understandingoftheliturgy relatedparticularlytothe abundanceandthenumber ofchokesavailableinthe LiturgyoftheWordand otheralternativesavailable intherite.

LECTIONARY

"Thestrongestpointof thenewliturgyisthelectionaryandtheVatican Councilwishedthatthe WordofGodshouldbe madeavailablemuchmore abundantlythanpreviously," CardinalKnoxsaid.

Hedidnotsecanylikely revisionofthelectionaryin thenearfuture.

NEWCONGREGATION

CardinalKnox'sVatican congregationisareconstitutedbodyembracingtwoformerlyseparatefields-SacramentsandDivineWorship.

Itsworld-widemembershipismadeupof25cardinalsandsevenbishops,in additiontomanycollaboratorsandconsultorsaround theworld. Asanewcongregation,it hadhelditsfirstplenarysessionlastNovember,the cardinalsaid.

Thecongregation'swork isnotonlyonliturgybutin theadministrationofsacramentsaswell,especially marriage.

ThereturnofCardinal Knoxtoapermanentoffice inRomeistypicalofalifetimethathascarriedhim farfromhisnativePerth andtheNewNorciadiocese forwhichheoriginallyenteredthepriesthood. AtatimewhenthetotalandCatholicpopulationsofAustralia areincreasingfairlyrapidly,theReligiouspopulationisdecreasing justasrapidly,accordingtoanationalreportreleasedtoday.

A181-pageanalysisof AustralianReligiousBrothersandSisterssaysthat whileinthetenyears196676thetotalpopulationincreasedby14percent(projected)andtheCatholic populationby17percent, theReligiouspopulationhas decreasedby13.1percent.

Thelargerpartofthis decrease(9.4percent)has occurredinthefiveyears 1971-76atatimewhen theCatholicpopulationincreasewasequaltothetotal populationincrease(6per cent).

Thesurveywascompiled byresearchworkersforthe MajorSuperiorsofAustraliaunderthedirectionof SisterCarmelLeavyO.P.

Anothertrendnotedin thesurveyisthatthedecline isoccurringatatimewhen severalnewCongregations arebeingintroducedinto Australia.

Inthepasttenyears.12 newCongregationsofSistershavecometoAustralia, bringingthetotalnumber offemalecongregationsto 131. Onthevitalquestionof

theageofReligious,the surveysaysthattheSisters' grouphasproportionately moreoftheover-sixtyage groupthanmaleReligious, andthismatchesthetrend alreadydiscernibleinthe Australian(andCatholic) population,wherethereare 875,000moremalesthan femalesover60.

TurningtotheAustralian States,thesurveynotesthat thedistributionoftheCatholicpopulationisunequal -theCatholicsbeinghigh. erthantheSlatepercentagesinN.S.W.(39.7against 37.2percent)andVictoria (29.2against27.5percent).

WesternAustraliawith 8.1percentoftheAustraliantotalpopulationhasonly7.8percentoftheCatholicpopulation.

InReligiouspopulation NewSouthWalesiswell abovetheaverageandtwothirdsofallReligiousare concentratedintheStates ofNewSouthWalesand Victoria.

Thesurveynotestheseveredeclineinentrantsto theReligiciuslife(61per cent)inthepastdecadethe sharpestdeclinebeingfor

theSisters, But,thesurveycontinues, thedeclineinvocationsis aworldwidephenomenon. Compared,say,withIrelandtherateofdeclineof entrantsfortworecentfiveyearperiodsismuchthe same(43.3percentfor Australiaagainst46.5per centforIreland).

ThetotalnumberofSistersinAustraliafor1976 isgivenas12,619. TheMercyOrderleads with3,446followedby SaintJoseph2,295,and Presentation844. Amongthetopten, knowninW.A.,Dominicans(468)andBrigidines (465)aresixthandseventh largestrespectively;Saint JohnofGod(289)arethe tenthonthenationallist. MajorSuperiorsarethoseinchargeofthevarious ordersofmenandwomenintheCatholicChurch. Thereareover17,000Religiousinreligiousorders inAustralia,includingmanyhistoricorderslikethe Benedictines,theFranciscans,theJesuits.

(ThewordReligiouswhenusedasanounrefers tothemembersofthesevariousorders.)Thereare threegroupsofMajorSuperiors:forordersofSisters, BrothersandPriests.

Thediocesanclergyarenotincludedinthissurvey sincetheirparallelstudyisnotyetfinished. Whenthefinaldraftispublishedlaterthisyear thereshouldbeonlyonereportcomprisinginformationonbothReligious(menandwomen)anddiocesanclergy.

MAINFINDINGS

Thesurveywascarriedoutbymembersofthe ResearchOfficeoftheMajorSuperiorsandbythe variousStateAdvisoryResearchGroupsspeciallyconvenedforthepurpose.

Thesurveyhasnegativeaswellaspositivefindings. Onthepositiveside: TherearestillalargenumberofReligiousin theAustralianChurch-about12,600Sistersand 4,500Brothersandpriests(includingparishclergy). Religiousarecarryingoutmorevariedworks thaneverbeforeinAustralianhistory.Thereisevidenceofgrowinginvolvementwiththepoorand marginalisedamongtheaged,themigrants,theAborigines,theill. Religiousarebettereducatedprofessionallythan everbefore.Thegrowthinprofessionalreligious studieshasbeenquiteremarkableintheperiod.

FALLINNUMBERS

Onthenegativeside: Therearefewerreligiousnowthanin1966about2,000fewerSistersand400fewerBrothers andpriests. Thereisadecreaseinthenumbersenteringand enincreaseinthoseleavingreligiouslife.(In1966, 654enteredreligionandtenyearslaterthefigurehas droppedto254.) Thereisahigherpercentageofretiredand ageingReligious.

Thesechap;esinAustralianreligiouslifeareall partofaworluwidepatternandneedtobeinterpreted againstthebroadersocialandculturalcontext.This draftreportisnotconcernedwithinterpretationofthe findings,however,merelywithrecordingthefactsas accuratelyaspossible.

Religiouslifehasbeenanintegralpartofthe CatholicChurchsinceearliesttimesandatVatican IItherewasaspecialdecreeaboutit.

ThedeclineinthenumbersofReligiousinAustralia,therefore,andintheWesternworldwillhave seriousconsequencesfortheCatholicChurchgenerally.TherewillbefewerReligiousineducationand healthcare,forinstance,butthechangeswillbe gradual.

Religious,however,donotseethemselvesprimarilyintermsoftheirjob,whetherasteachersornurses orsocialworkers.Theycertainlydonotseethemselvesprimarilyasprovidingacheaplabourforcefor theChurch.

Theyseereligiouslifeintermsandvaluesnot alwaysoreasilyunderstandableinsecularlife-in termsofacalltofollowJesusChrist.Asonefamous moderncommentatorputsit: "Wedonotbecomereligiousfirstofalltoservenoreveninordertoenterintotheeternalkingdom ...weenterreligiouslifebasicallybecauseofChrist.
