FatherGallagheriswidely knownintheEasternStates asthefounderoftheAustralianAntigonishMovement.Asanassistantpriest inLidcombein1954,heinspiredandguidedtheformationofaCreditUnionon aparishbasis.Nowtenper centofAustralianparishes haveCreditUnions.
Oneyearago,Father Gallagher,returningfroma studytourinCanada,the UnitedStatesandEurope, passedthroughPerthand wasinvitedtohelpspread theideainourcity.His presentvisit,duringhisannualvacationfromparochial workinEnfield,isaresult ofthatinvitation.

"Educationisthekeyto openingupsuccessfulCredit Unionsandothersimilarcooperativeenterprises,"insistsFatherGallagher."By educationthroughdiscussionpeoplecancometoacceptresponsibilityfortheir ownneedsandthoseof others.Outofthiscangrow co-operativecreditsocieties, buildingandtradingsocieties.Andoutofthiscan growawholenewwayof lifebasedontheproper recognitionofthehuman personasanintelligentand freesocialbeing."

Wemustbeorinmindthatourculture,in itsorigin,comefromtheLatinChristianity, hencewebearthetitleofChristiancivilisation-eventhoughattimeswecertainlydo notmeritthetitle.Theseotherareasofthe worldhaveatotallydifferentculturalorigin, anditistheadaptingofthistotheteaching ofChristwhichformssuchaproblemtothe spreadofChrist'steachinginthoseparts.
Apartfromourownproblemofthespread ofChrist'steachingsinourownmilieu,we havethedutyofassistingbyspiritualand temporalmeansallthemissionaryactivityof theChurch.Thiswehaveincommonwithall Catholicstheworldover,eventhemostnewly formedmissionstation.
Thespiritualneedsofsoulsdemandour untiringeffort.This,joinedwiththephysical sacrificesoftheactivemissionary,offersupa greatprayertoAlmightyGodthatHissalvific Willbefulfilled.
TheHolyFatherhaspointedoutthatthe materialneedsoftheMissionsaresuchthat theyrequiremoreextensiveandgenerous helpfromthefaithful.Hesays:"Whenone remembersthatwiththeofferingsalready collectedsofar,ithasbeenpossibletoanswer barelyone-thirdoftheheart-rendingrequests ofMissionaries,itiseasytoconvinceourselvesoftheneedforpoolingalleffortsinthe directionofmissionaryco-operationinspired bythedeepestandsoundestCatholicspirit."
HenceMissionSunday,whichwillbeheld onOctober21ineverydioceseandparish throughouttheworld.
Thisconcentratedeffortofprayerand materialassistanceshouldbeinspiiedbythe thoughtthatthebondsbetweensectionsof theChurchoretightened;thattheyarea tangibleexpressionofbrotherlyfeelingfrom the"haves"tothe"have-nots;"theyalso teachall,generosityandunselfishness;and symbolisethatgreatbodyofwhichwearebut apart,theCommunionofSaints.

AmissionaryinBangkok saidhehopedthattheCouncilwouldresultinfurther impetustonewmissionary methods.Heclaimedthat the19th-centurymissionary approachwassuccessful withprimitivepeoples,but afailurewithcivilisations suchasthoseofIndia,Japan andThailand.
Thetask,accordingtothis missionary,istounderstand thesecivilisationsindepth beforeonecanhopeto Christianisethem,andthe Churchhasbarelybegunon thiswork.Hespeaksofconvertingawholecultureand countryratherthanisolated individuals.Inthiswork Catholicstudentsareof primeimportance;atthe fiveuniversitiesofBangkok thereare325Catholicsina studentbodyof40,000.
TheCatholicsschoolsof Thailand,however,arein theforefrontofthecountry's educationsystem.Eversince theAssumptionCollegewas establishedthere75years ago,theyhavebeenprominent.TheAssumptionCollegeimmediatelyprovedits superioritytocourtand pagodaschoolsandwasfrequentedbythechildrenof thebestThaifamilies.
Nowthereare105Catholicschoolswithover60,000 pupils,ofwhom17,000are Catholics.TheGovernment makesapercapitaaid grantavailableforrecognisedprivateschools,but someoftheCatholicschools donotacceptitsoasto avoidthecontrolsitimplies.

areleftwithagreatdealof freedom.Althoughall schoolsarerequiredtogive instructioninBuddhism, someCatholicschoolsignore theinjunctionandtheauthoritiesturnablindeye, fortheschools'disciplinary andacademicstandardsare appreciated,

ThesameistrueofJapan, wheretheCatholicschools arethefirstlineofcontact, moreappreciatedthanthe Church'scharityinstitutions. Japanhasonly300,000 Catholics,buttheCatholic educationalsystemconsists ofsevenuniversities,20colleges(usingthewordinthe Americansense),91high andmiddleschools,55primaryschoolsand529kindergartens.TheschoolsreceivenoGovernmentaid, butseemtothrive.Ninety percentofthepupilsare non-Catholicswhoattend becausetheschoolshavea reputationfortopscholastic standardsandresults.
Aresultoftheschools systemisthatthereare60 CatholicuniversityprofessorsinTokyoandthe Churchismakingconsiderableimpactinthenation's livelyintellectuallife. SpearheadingtheChurch's effortsinthisfieldisthe OriensInstituteforReligiousResearch.The48year-olddirectoroftheinstitute,FatherJosephSpae, aBelgianScheinmissionary,startedtheinstituteat therequestoftheJapanese Hierarchy. Theinstituteaimstolink CatholictraditionandcontemporaryJapanesethought. St.Peter'sBasilica hasbeenordered closed temporarily becauseofbombs placedthereinrecentmonths.
Thebasilicaandgrottoes beneathwereorderedclosed untiltoday's(October11) openingoftheSecondVaticanCouncilbyCardinal Testa,secretaryoftheadministrativesecretariatresponsibleformaterialpreparationsfortheCetut-il. Theactionwastakenin accordwithCardinal'nacelle,thebasilica'sarchpriest.
OnSeptember22,anincendiarybombandadetonatorwerefoundinthe basilicabeneaththetiersof upholsteredwoodenseats preparedfortheCouncil Fathers.Thiswasthefifth recordedattempttobomb thebasilica.
Priortothat,abombexplodedinthebasilicaon July14.Ithadbeenplaced atthebaseofastatuein' theapseofthebasilicanear theAltaroftheChair.
Thatbombwaslow poweredanddidnotdo muchdamage,butthe recentlyfoundbombwas reportedtohavebeenmuch morepowerfulandcapable ofdoingextensivedamage, especiallytotheconstructionintheCouncilhall.

*THIS,CHAPELatthe HolyRosaryParish SouthDoubleview,now takestheplaceoftheconvertedclassroomswhich haveservedtheparishioners uptodate.
Thenewbuilding,with fourclassrooms,wasbuilt for£11,000andopenedby HisGracetheArchbishop recently.
VeryRev.FatherF.X. Brown,O.P.,welcomedHis GraceonbehalfoftheparishionersofSouthDoubleview.
AfterHisGracehadblessedthebuilding,hecongratulatedtheDominican Fathers,whocarefor Doubleview,theDominican Sisters,whoteachinthe school,andtheparishioners whohadthegreatnamefor helpinginallthingsround theparish.HisGrace praisedthespiritoffaith anddevotionatHolyRosary.

TheCatholicMarriageGuidanceCouncilis fulfillingadefiniteneedandhasbeenareal helptomanypeople,saidFatherJ.F.Russell inhisfirstannualreportforthecouncil.
FatherRussellwasappointedfirstdirectorofthe CatholicMarriageGuidance CouncilinNovember,1960, whentheselectiontraining oflaycounsellorsbegan.
InJanuary,1962,the councilwasapprovedbythe Attorney-General,SirGarfieldBarwick,asa"MarriageGuidanceOrganisation"undertheprovisions oftheMatrimonialCauses Act.Byvirtueofthisapproval,theDivorceCourt canrefercasestothecouncil forthepurposeofattemptingareconciliationbetween theparties.
ACTIVITIES
FatherRusselldescribed someoftheactivitiesofthe councilasfollows: After18monthscounselling,theCentrehasdealt withatotalof81marriage casesandthreepre-marital cases.Thishasinvolved105 peopleasclients.Theapproximateresultsofcounsellingwere-successful,10 percent;improvement,30 percent;noimprovement, 30percent;resultunknown, 30percent.
Statisticsprovidethefollowingfacts: TherewasaslightmajorityofAustralianmarriages. Therewere17caseswhere bothpartieswereofforeign birth.

TheverymovingperformanceoftheSt.Matthew Passionearlierthisyearin theWinthropHallmayhave sentmanyreadersinsearch ofagoodrecording.Sucha purchaseisnolightmatter; thegreatlengthofthework inevitablymakesitcostly, but,atthesametime,the greatnessoftheworkdemandsafirst-classperformance.Twoorthreeyears agotheWorldRecordClub putoutathree-discsetby theTorontoSymphonyOrchestraandChoiratacost ofabout£6,buttheperformancewaspoorandit mayhaveprovedabad bargainformanypeople.
ThissetismadebyKlempererwiththePhilharmonia OrchestraandChoruswith theboysoftheHampstead ParishChoir;itisunabridgedandlastsabout3; hours.Afterlisteningcarefullytothis,itwasdifficult toresisttheopinionthat Klempererhasachievedas greataperformanceasany ofhistriumphswithBeethovenorBrahmssymphonies.Inyearstocome,this maywellbeconsideredone oftheclassicsofthegramophone.
Klemperertakesarather slowtimethroughout,giving weightandsolidity;this leadstoanarchitectural qualitywhichhebringsout alsoinBrahms,butwhich, withBach,emphasisesthe religiousreverence.The othercharacteristicofKlempereristhelovingcare lavishedoninstrumental obbligatos.
PeterPearsisanexcellentEvangelistandFischer-
DieskauasensitiveChristus. Amongthestar-studdedcast Iwouldparticularlypointto ChristaLudwigasexcelling; thismezza-sopranohasnow maturedinbothvoiceand techniqueandmustbeconsideredasoneofthevery firstmezzosintheworld. Thenewmusico-dramatic techniquesofstereorecordingarewellinevidence here.Theactualparticipants inthePassionstandoutin relief,theEvangelistasnarratorismoredetachedwhile theothersandthechoruses formabackground.Inthe sameway,theinstrumental obbligatosstandoutinrelief. Thelibretto,withcolour reproductions,isaworthy companiontoaverybeautifulset.
