TheCouncilofTrent,the19thinChurchhistory,wasconvokedintheyear1545by PopePaulliltocnmbatthespreadofProtestantism.In25sessionsspreadover18 years,underfivepopes,thisCouncilwhichendedin1563proclaimedthattheBible andTraditiontogethermakeuptheruleoffaith,andthattheChurchalonehasthe righttointerpretit.The

Bishopliogan,whowas borninLiverpool,went toIndiainOctober, 1928,ayearafterhis ordinationatRome.The wholeofhismissionary lifewasspentatBellaryinMyFore.Hewas consecratedinMay, 1949,attheFranciscan houseatForestGate, London.ThelateBishop sufferedafatalheart attackafewhoursafter arrivalinNaples.
Councilwilltakeheir placesthere. Apulpitwillbeatthe Pope'sleftfortheuseof thosewhowilladdressthe Councilformallyandat length.Beyondthisandjust infrontofthebronzestatue ofSt.Petertherewillbean altaruponwhichwillrest abookoftheScriptures duringtheCouncil.

THEREwillbeno cloakroominthe basilicafortheuseofthe CouncilFathers.Forsolemn functions,theFatherswill entertheCouncilHallin processionwiththePope. Intheseinstancestheywill vestintheApostolicPalace anddescendintothebasilica bywayoftheRoyalStairs andtheatriumofthebasilica.Theywillthereforeuse foracloakroomthe"Lapidario"(TheHallofInscriptions),alonghallwhich runsbetweentheVatican MuseumsandtheApostolic Palace.

Featuresofthedignified sanctuaryarethe24ft.-high walls,marblealtar,panelled reredosandhand-carved baldacchinocompletewith concealedfluorescentlights. AbronzeCorpusfigureis mountedona10ft.oak cross.Gothicdesignwrought ironpanelshavebeenincorporatedinthesidewalls ofthesanctuary,givinga clearviewoftheCrucifix andbaldacchinofromthe sacristy,whilethesameeffectisalsoseenfromthe LadyChapel,thesepanels
areerectedhighenoughto ensureprivacyinthesacristy.ThepulpitisofGothic designinwroughtironwith heavyaloeswoodrail.The opendesignofthepulpit enablesaclearviewofthe sanctuaryfromallangles.
TheStationsoftheCross, whichareofbronze,are fittedwithconcealedlights andcanbeturnedonindependentlyorallatonce. Concealedfluorescent lightingisapleasingfeature oftheentirechurch.The floorofthesanctuaryhas beenlaidinparquetrytiles fixedtoconcrete,andthe entirefloorofthenaveis alsotiledinburgundyand grey. Thetwelveconsecration crossesandcandlebrackets havebeenplacedatintervalsaroundthechurch walls,andtwosmallcrosses havebeenerectedoverthe twomarbleholywaterfonts
onthejambsofthechurch entrance.Ahand-carved altarisafeatureofthe LadyChapel,andisinkeepingwiththeheavyaloeswoodaltarrailssupported onhand-carvedspiralpillars.
Achoirgalleryextends thefullwidthofthechurch, andtheceilingofthegalleryisofpanelledIndian pear. Accessisprovidedtothe topofthe50ft.towerand fromtheplatformacommandingviewofthetown anddistrictscanbeseen. Afloodlightiserectedfacing thefrontofthechurchand alsoprovideslightoverthe entrancesleadingtotheextensiveparkingareasinthe churchgrounds.

Todayeverythinghas changed.Theoncesmall villagehasmushroomedinto asprawlinganduncontrollablecitywiththousands uponthousandslivinginabjectpoverty.Unemployment isrifeeverywhereandmost lackthebarenecessitiesof life.Thepopulationtodayis overfivetimeswhatitwas tenyearsago.FatherShanahan,not knowingwheretobeginto provideforthosepoor peopledecidedtoconcentrateontheyoung.He soughtthechildrenout whenevertheycouldbe foundandbegangiving theminstructions.
