THEattitudeof 1contemporary Protestantstoapossibleinvitationis governedlargelyby theirideaofthe natureoftheChurch anditsunity, and maybeexpressedin thesepoints:
UNITYisanessential propertyoftheChurch.
THEREFORE,reformed theologycannotacceptthe separationoftheChurches asjustified.
ITFOLLOWSthatit isthedutyoftheseparated Churchestoseekunity.
THEUNITYofthe Churchesmustbesoughtfor thesakeofthetruth,not foranypracticalreasons.
CONSEQUENTLY,any kindofindifferentismin mattersofdoctrinemustbe avoidedinseekingunity. Thisisstressedespeciallyon theLutheranside,sincethe Lutherancommunitieslook ontheirconfessionalstatementsofbeliefasa"summa scripturae"(acompendium ofScripture),and,withthis prerequisite,acceptScriptureasthe"normanormans"(primarystandard), asopposedtothe"norma normata"(secondarystandard),ofalldoctrinalteaching.Fromtheirideaofthe Churchasexpressedintheir confessionalstatementsProtestantsdisputetheclaimof theCatholicChurchtobe thetrueChurchofChrist anditsdemandforthereturnoftheotherChristian communities.

Lutherrecognisesonlythe fourancient"chiefCouncils"ofNicea,Constantinople,EphesusandChalcedon,onthegroundthatthey rightlyexpresstheteaching ofScripture.Theearly Fathers,however,heldthat theseCouncilsweretrueto Scripturebecauseofthe assistanceoftheHolySpirit preservingtheassemblyof bishopsfromerror;anditis preciselythisbasisofill^ authorityofCouncilsthat Lutherrejected.Inhisview, aCouncilwasameetingof expertsinScripture,where thesolerule'offaithwas Scriptureasunderstoodby thereformers.Asaresult, whattheProtestantsreally wantedwasnotaCouncil, butaconferenceonreligion.
WHENPopeJohn XXIIIannouncedtheholdingofanEcumenicalCouncil,theword"ecumenical" gaverisetoamisunderstanding,anditwasthought hemeantajointCouncil. ImportanttooiswhatSt. ThomassaysaboutdifferencesofterminologyindiscussionsbetweenChristians ofdifferentcommunions.It iscertainthatsuchdifferencesformtodayoneofthe greatestobstaclestoatheologicalunderstandinginthe questionsatissue.Sincethe timeoftheReformation thesedifferences,which existedeventhen,have steadilyincreased,andas longaspeoplefailtorealise thattheyattachdifferent meaningstothesamewords theywillgoontalkingat cross-purposes.
Inacertainsense,acommonbasisisalsoofferedby thefirstthreeCreeds,which thereformedcommunities recogniseasnormsofbelief, namelytheApostles'Creed, theNicene,andso-called AthanasianCreed,which summarisesthewholedoctrineoftheTrinityandof Christ.Wedonotignorethe factthat,forexample,the meritoriousactivityof Christ'shumannatureisnot admittedinLuther'sChristology,butyetthedefinitive ChristologyofChalcedonis fundamentallyacknowledged.
Inaddition,thedoctrinal decisionsofthefirstfour Councilswererecognisedby theReformersandtakenas normsofbelief.
IntheChurch,Scripture andTraditionalwaysgotogether,andadmissionofthe doctrinaldecisionsofthe firstfourCouncilsinvolves, insomeway,arecognition ofTradition.Weareglad that,inProtestantismtoday, theproblemof"Scripture andTradition"isconsidered inapositiveway,andthat theoppositionofScripture asthewordofGodtoTraditionasthewordofman irecognisedasamisrepresentationforcontroversial purposes,anduselessfor clarifyingtheproblem.
RecentProtestantexegesishasdiscovered"early Catholicelements"inScripture, andthiswillfacilitate inter-confessionaldiscussion onthescripturalbasisofthe CatholicideaoftheChurch. Butwemustnotignorethe difficultiesofaprooffrom scripturethatwillconvince thoseseparatedfromus. Theyaredifficultiesarising notonlyfromthespecial hermeneuticpresuppositions ofmodernProtestantexegetes, butfromthespecial natureofthescripturalexpositionofthereformers andoftheirstatementsof belief.
Overandabovethis comesthequestionofwhom wearereallydealingwith asregardsallwedotoprepareafuturereunion.The lackofanyteachingauthority,thenumeroilstheologicalopinionsatvariance

Yetweoughttobe?ware that,withalltheirvariations,thereisapermanent basictendencyinthereformationoutlookoftheLutheran,CalvinistandAnglican communities.
Howevermuchindividual elementsofthestatements ofbeliefandtheirexegeticalbasishavebeenabandoned, stilltheirgeneral tendencyandfundamental attituderemainsinsome waythestarting-pointand thepointerofthetheology ofthereformedChurches andevenmoresooftheir parochiallifeanddevotional practice. Moreover, thereformedChurchesoutside Germany, whichdeveloped furtherthanthoseinGermany,aredefinitely"Confession-Churches,"andthe variousstatementsofbelief ("ConfessioBelgica,"The WestminsterConfession, etc.)havealikenormative significance.
Thesetting-upofaparticular"Secretariatforthe furtheranceofChristian unity"emphasisesthePope's intentionthatthepreparatoryworkshouldlookto thepossibilitiesofafuture reunion,answeringquestionsputbythoseoutside andconcerningitselfwith theirinterests.Cardinal Lercaro,theArchbishopof Bologna,statedinSeptember,1960,thattheCouncil wouldnotbea"Councilfor unification"aswerethoseof LyonsandFlorence,buta "Councilofunity,"which, inthespiritofthecharity ofChrist,wouldcreateor strengthentheprerequisites forabetterunderstanding anddrawingtogetherof thoseoutside.Thoughthe CatholicChurchmayadmit nocompromiseonrevealed truth,sheispreparedin mattersofworshipanddisciplinetoconsiderthedesiresandtraditionsofthe Churcheswhichseekunity.
ItisimportanttoemphasisefullythattheCouncilis notcalledforthepurposeof achievingreunion, butfor internalmattersofthe Church.Thefutureofthe effortsforunionliesin God'shands, andwehaveto guardagainstmakingforecastsorexpectingvisible resultsinthenearfuture.
