THEECUMENICALCOUNCIL-THECHURCHANDCHRISTENDOM
ITwouldbeincorrecttodescribe theAnglicanssimply asProtestants. The AnglicanChurchis, infact, alongwith theLutheranand Calvinist, aspecial typeofreformed Christianity.
Threefactorscombined togiverisetothereformationinEngland-Henry VIII'sdesiretodivorce CatherineofAragon,the oppositiononthepartof someofthelaitytoclerical privileges,andthewritings ofMartinLuther,which circulatedinEnglandfrom 1521onwards.
Amongthosewhoread thesewasThomasCranmer, who,abouttheyear1530, acceptedtheLutherandoctrineofjustificationbyfaith alone.In1533,hewasnominatedArchbishopofCanterburybytheKingandconsecrated.HenryVIIIwasa typicalrenaissanceabsolute rulerand,inaddition,was wellinstructedintheology. In1521hehadwrittenthe Assertioseptemsacramentorum(astatementonthe sevensacraments)against Luther,andreceivedfrom PopeLeoXthetitle"Defensorfidei"(Defenderof theFaith),stillbornebythe EnglishSovereign.
InMay,1533,Cranmer declaredtheking'smarriage withCatherinetobenull, andhisunionwithAnne Boleyn,contractedinJanuary,valid.PopeClement VII,inJuly,1533,pronouncedthemarriagewith Anneinvalid,and,inconsequence,Henry,onNovember,1534,madehimself,by theActofSupremacy,."ProtectorandSupremeHeadof theEnglishChurchand clergy."Apartfromthathe madenochangeindoctrine.
In1539,heenactedthe StatuteofSixArticles againstProtestantteachings infiltratingintothecounry.
Itwasonlyinthereign ofEdwardVI,stillinhis minority,thatCranmersucceededinintroducingthe doctrinesandpracticesof thereformers.In1549,the BookofCommonPrayer, composedbyhimself,was prescribedforgeneraluse astheofficialliturgical book.Threeyearslater,he drewupaConfessionformulain42articles,which, in1563,werereducedto39 andaddedtotheofficial prayerbook.TheyputforwardtheBibleasthesole ruleoffaith,andtaught justificationbyfaithalone.
TheonlysacramentsretainedwereBaptismandthe Lord'sSupper.BothtranssubstantiationandZwingli's interpretationwererejected.
'TheteachingontheEucharistdoesnotseemtoexclude anobjective,realpresence ofChrist;itspositivecontentmustbedrawnfrom thegeneraltenoroftheAnglicanliturgy.
TEdoctrine oftheAnglicanreformationisnowheresoclearlyexpressed asinitsliturgy,andthe BookofCommonPrayeris whatchieflyholdstheAnglicanChurchestogether. ThetraditionalChurchyear isretained,thoughthenumberofsaints'daysisreduced.Adignifiedritefor Confirmation,Marriageand Ordersislaiddown,though these,alongwithPenance andExtremeUnctionare notconsideredsacraments exceptbyAnglo-Catholics. IntheAnglicanliturgy almostthewholeoftheOld andNewTestamentsisread inthecourseoftheyear. time,altered.Insteadof "SupremeHead,"shewas calledthe"SupremeAuthority"oftheChurch,andit wasclearlystated,inthe 37tharticleoftheAnglican Confession,thattheSovereignmightnot"meddle withtheministeringof God'swordorofthesacraments."Thehierarchical constitutionandmanyCatholicformswereretained. Theepiscopaloffice,based theologicallyandcanonicallyontheclaimtothe apostolicsuccession,wasto remainthefoundationofthe ElizabethanChurch.
TheAnglicanBishopof Salisbury,JohnJewel,writingin1562,madethehumanisticprincipleofChurch unityinthefirstfiveorsix centuriesthebasisofhis expositonofAnglicanism. Heattemptedtocombine thenationalcharacterof theAnglicanChurchwith theuniversalvalidityofthe earlyChurchtradition, and inthatwayindicaL-1the basictheologicalattitudeof theChurchofEngland.
LancelotAndrewes(15551626),theofficialtheologian ofJamesI,tracedtheepiscopalofficetoChrist'sassignmentofspecialdignity tocertainofHisfollowers; hewasthefatherofthe olderAnglo-Catholicism.He acceptedthesacrificialidea oftheEucharist,andtaught thatthewordsofconsecrationeffectedachangeinthe elementsofbreadandwine.
Heisstillheldtodayamong Anglicansasanauthorityof thefirstrankandasthe founderoftheviamedia betweentheRomanCatholic Churchandthecontinental reformation.
ALTHOUGH theChurchof Englandwasoriginallya nationalChurch,ithasexpandedintotheAnglican communityofChurches,to whichbelongalltheAnglicanbishopricsoftheworld. Thiscommunity,embracing some30provincesand30 individualdiocesesaswell, isheldtogetherbythe39 articlesofbelief,acknowledgementoftheBibleand thefirstfourecumenical councils,andrespectforthe traditionoftheChurchof thefirstmillenium.TheindividualChurchesallworshipinthevernacular,with theresultthatthereare morethantwohundred liturgicallanguagesand translationsofthe'Bookof CommonPrayer.
Finally,thedifferentprovincesfeelabondofloyalty totheexistingArChbishop ofCanterburyasthechief representativeofAnglicanism.Hisutterancesonecclesiasticalquestionscarry greatweight,althoughhis jurisdictionisconfinedto hisownprovince,Hehas therighttosummonthe LambethConferenceofAnglicanbishops;itmeets abouteverytenyears,and isthemostvisiblesignofa bindingcommunity.Itis neitheracouncilnoradiocesansynod,butitspronouncementsareveryinfluentialintheAnglicanworld.
Doctrinaldecisionsofthe LambethConferencecan onlyreceivebindingforce byActofParliament.The Anglicanrepugnanceto theologicaldogmatismand confessionalobligations openedthewaytoamultiplicityofopinions,views andtendencies,which,from thetimeoftheReformation, havebroughtaboutincreasedtensions.Thereare threeprinciplesatwork sidebyside-theProtestant andscriptural(Evangelical orLowChurch),thehumanistic andrationalistic (LatitudinarianorBroad Church),andtheinstitutionalandsacraments(ConservativeorHighChurch).

TheAnglicanArchbishop's visitrecallsPiusXIII'sreceptionofthepresidentof theGermanEvangglical Church,Dr.Dibelius,in January,1956.Thisvisit, too,despiteitsprivate nature,wasofhistoricimportance,foritwasthefirst timesincetheReformation thatarepresentativeof GermanProtestantismhad visitedthePope.Dr.Dibeliusspokeofhissatisfaction andgratitudeforthefriendlinessofhisreception,but noonewasdeludedabout thecontinuanceofdifferencesthatdividedthem. Still,thenasnow,sucha visitcanbesaidtobea signoftheimprovedclimate ofopinionofthetwoconfessions.
Dr.Fisher, wheninRome, pointedout:"Forthefirst timefor400yearsanarchbishopofCanterburyhas comeofficiallytoRomenot toairhisownviewsor complaints, butsolelyto showrespecttoHisHoliness thePopeinthespiritof courtesyapdChristian brotherhood.Thisvisithas becomepossiblebecausethe Popeletitbeknownthathe wouldreceivemeinthe samespiritofChristian brotherhood."
Thereceptionlasteda goodhour,andthePope showedspecialinterestin Dr.Fisher'svisittothe East,recallingPopeGregory theGreat'ssendingofChristianmissionariestoEngland. HepresentedtheArchbishopwithanumberof volumes,amongthemthe resolutionsoftheRoman Synod,hisaddressesasPatriarchofVenice,andthe firstvolumeofpreparatory actsfortheEcumenical Council.Inaddition,hegave himandtheaccompanying chaplainsthemedalofhis pontificate.Dr.FisherpresentedtothePoneafin, pictureoftheQueen'scoronationceremony.
TheArchbishop,onthe daybeforehisvisittothe Vatican,expresslyindicated theexistingdifferences,includingthenon-theological factorsmakingforseparationwhicharisefromthe natureoftheEnglishtemperamentandareclosely boundupwithdoctrinal differences.Hegaveashis opinionthat"attherootof allseparationanddivision thereliesalwaysaquestion ofauthorityandjurisdiction."Therearestillobstaclesenoughontheway tounion,butnoonewho confessedJesusChrist,the sourceofauthority,teaching andjurisdiction,ashisLord andMastermustletthese deterhimfromstrivingtowardsunion.
Thedayafterhismeeting withtheArchbishop,the HolyFatheraddresseda numberofcaridnal,atthe
conclusionoftheretreat givenattheVatican, stressinghis"respectfuladmiration"fortheAnglicanprimateandforhis"courageous undertaking."Hepraisedtoo the"dynamicwill"with whichtheArchbishopstrove fortheexcellentpurposeof mutualunderstanding amongChristians.Atthe sametimethePopeindicatedthattherehadbeenno discussionofdogmaticquestionswhichdividedthetwo Churchesandhadbecome moreacutewiththepassage offourcenturies.
BUTthrough personalcontacts,exchangeofideasand fraternaldiscussions,the dayoffullunderstanding wouldbebroughtnearer. Forthemoment,thePope concluded,themeetinghas shownthat,onbothsides, therewerepresentcourtesy, cordiality,andunderstanding.Theseare"notunimportantfruitsofafrank discussion,andtheysignify thatthisisahistoricdate intherelationsbetweenthe CatholicandtheAnglican Churches."
Yetwemustnotdraw hastyconclusionsormake rashprophecies,eventhough themeeting,justbeforethe VaticanCouncil,augurswell forthefuture.ThePope, infact,describedtheArchbishop'svisitasa"foretaste oftheresultshopedforfrom theCouncil."
