Churchnever resigneditselftothe separationofthe EasternChurchfrom theWest, butconstantly, inallsortsof ways, workedforreunion, untilthe CouncilofFlorence, atanyrateforashort time, broughtpracticallythewholeof Christendombackto theunityofthe visibleChurch.

Neverhavethesedivisions beensokeenlyfeltonall sidesastheyaretoday,the longingforunityfinds visibleexpressioninthe ecumenicalmovement,and hasalreadybroughttogether,ingreatpart,the variousChristiancommunities,apartfromtheRoman CatholicChurch,inthe WorldCouncilofChurches.

Christendomnowpresents aquitedifferentaspectfrom theChristendomofthepreTridentineCouncils.Even inthelaterMiddleAges Christendomwasunderstoodasconsistingofthe Catholicsoftheentireuniverse, andtheseparationof theEasternChurchwasbelievedtohavebeenpermanentlyovercomeinthe CouncilsofLyonsand Florence.IftodayweunderstandbyChristendomall whoconfess-thedivinityof ChristandHisredemption, itpresentsanumberof divisions, humanlyspeaking incurable.

Yetthereisonepointon whichallareagreed;all seekaftertheunitywilled byChrist.Theimportanceof thisisfarfromnegligible;it isthesourceoftheimpulse behind the ecumenical movement.Itshouldlead ourseparatedbrethrentoan understandingoftheCatholicideaofunity, asdevelopedbythepresentPope inhisfirstencyclicalAd PetriCathedram.

mitthat,astheCatholic Churchisconvincedthatthe primacyofPeter'ssuccessor, theapostolicsuccession,and thehierarchicalstructureof theChurchderivefromthe willofChristinfounding theChurch,herunderstandingofunity,bothvisible andinvisible,isdetermined accordingly.

Theywill,likewise,see thatthePope'saimincallingtheCouncilisnotto bringaboutunion,for whichthetimeisnotyet ripe,but,asheinsists,to preparethewayforunion inthefuturebyrenewing thelifeoftheChurch.This isthemeaningofthefollowingpassageinhisfirst encyclical:

"Thattheremaybeone foldandoneshepherd(John 10:16).Thisirresistibleassurancewasthecompelling motivewhichledUstoannouncepubliclyOurresolve tocallanEcumenicalCouncil.Bishopswillcometogethertherefromevery corneroftheworldtodiscussimportantmattersof religion.Butthemostpressingtopicswillbethose whichconcernthespread oftheCatholicFaith,the revivalofChristianstandardsofmorality,andthe bringingofecclesiastical disciplineintocloseraccord withtheneedsandconditionsofourtimes.Thisin itselfwillprovideanoutstandingexampleoftruth, unityandlove.Maythose whoareseparatedfromthis ApostolicSee,beholding thismanifestationofunity, derivefromittheinspirationtoseekoutthatunity whichJesusChristprayed forsoardentlyfromHis heavenlyFather."

Itiswellknownthatboth OrthodoxandProtestants wereinvitedtothefirst VaticanCouncil.Atthe time, manybishopshoped thattheCouncilmightbring aboutareunionofChristendom, areunionoftheOrthodoxChurcheswiththe RomanCatholic, andeven thereturnofProtestant communitiestotheCatholic unity.

InSeptember,1868,Pius IXaddressedanApostolic Brief"toallbishopsofthe EasternRitewhoarenotin unionwiththeApostolic See,"andaskedthemtoend thesplitbetweenEastand West,andtocometothe EcumenicalCouncil,astheir predecessorsdidtothoseof LyonsandFlorence.

Unfortunately,thisBrief appearedinthepressbefore itwasdeliveredtothe Easternpatriarchs;and whenthevicarapostolic handedittothePatriarchof Constantinople,thelatter repliedthathewouldcertainlyhaveacceptedand studieditcarefully,hadhe notalreadyseenitscontents inthepapers.Infact,he said,itputforthclaimsthe OrthodoxChurchcouldnot admit,andifthebishops hadcometotheCouncilthe oldtheologicalquarrels wouldhaverevived,theold woundsreopenedandthe existingdifferencesmade moreacute;theonlypossiblebasisforunionconsistedofthedoctrinesand customsprevailingbefore theschism.Thepatriarch returnedtheBriefunopened.

itisamatter,notofhuman learning,butofdivinerevelation.Thisistobefound onlyintheoneCatholicand ApostolicChurch,towhich dividedChristianitymust finditsway,ifitreally aspirestotheunityofthe Church."
