Q.:WhatworriesmeisthatJesussaid:"TheFatheris greaterthanI"(Jn.14:28).
R.:OnceyoumentionthenameJesusyoushowyou arespeakingoftheSonofGodasmademan.
Inthecatechism,inanswertothequestion:Whomdo youbelieveJesusChristtobe?theansweris:Ibelieve JesusChristtobetrueGodandtrueman.InChrist, therefore,oneandthesameDivinePersonpossessed twonatures.HeretainedtheUncreatedandDivine naturepropertoGod,butalsohadthefiniteandcreated humannatureinwhichHewasbornoftheVirginMary. "ST.JOHNAS"THEBELOVEDDISCIPLE"

R.:St.John,inwritinghisgospel,about100A.D., wishedtoremainasanonymousaspossible.Instead

ofusinghisownname,therefore,heusedadescription wellknowntothefirstChristians. OurLordhadshownanespecialloveforSt.John, evenentrustingthecareofHisMothertohim.Our LordundoubtedlylovedallHisapostles;butinSt. John'scharacteranddispositionsHefoundaparticular appeal.
Q.1IfOurLordlovedJohnmorethantheothers,why didHenotmakehimheadoftheChurch?
R.:ThefactremainsthatHedidnot,butthatHe appointedSt.Petertothatposition.Thegospelsleave ourcuriosityunsatisfiedastothereasonsforOurLord's decision,andwecanonlysaythatwhateverthose reasonswere,theywerefullyinaccordwithHisinfinite wisdom.
THE"POORINSPIRIT"
Q.:Also,couldyoutellniewhat"Blessedarcthepoor inspirit"means?
R.:Therearetwopossiblemeanings.Themostlikely is:"Blessedarethosewhoarenotproud."Thatwould meanaspecialblessingforthosewhoarelowlyintheir ownestimationandhumblyturntoGodnallthings.A secondmeaningcouldbeinreferencetoearthlypossessions,sothatthoseareparticularlyblessedwhohave suchaspiritofpovertyanddetachmentfromworldly goodsthattheywouldbepreparedtoletthelotgo ratherthanoffendGodbysininordertoget.keepor increasethem.OurLordwarnedusthatthetrue wealthofaChristianistoberichinworksofcharity ratherthaninworldlygoods;andthatthosewhohave earthlypossessionsshouldusetheminrelievingthe needsofthepoor,iftheywishtosavetheirsouls(Lk. 16:9).
"SERVILEWORKS"
Q.:Please,also,whatare"servile"works?
R.:Thecatechismtellsusthatwemustsanctify SundaysandHolyDaysbyfulfillingprescribedreligious dutiesandbyobservingtheSundayrestfromall unnecessaryservilework.Theword"servile"isa technicaltermdatingfromtheearlycenturieswhen patricianhouseholdsofancientRomehadgangsof slavestoattendtodutiesrequiringhardbodilylabour. Thereferencetodayismerelytothekindofwork forbiddenonSundaysandHolyDayswithoutserious necessity,suchasthatinvolvingphysicaltoil,or engagingincommercialandindustrialpursuits.Sunday shouldbeadayofrestfromsuchoccupations,thatwe maysanctifyitbyprayerandotherreligiousduties, andbymoderateandlawfulrecreationrefreshourselvesforanotherweek'slabouratourordinarytasks.
R.Morally,yes;although owingtolegaldifficultieshe wouldnotbeboundinconsciencetodoso.Inother words,hemaybutneednot doso,asfarashisownconscienceisconcerned.He maydosu,,fortheJehovah Witnesshasawrongconscienceonthepoint.Objectively,amanisobligedto acceptnormalmeansofpreservinghislife,andbloodtransfusionisanormaland ordinarymeans.IftheJehovahWitness,throughhis sect'speculiarmisinterpretationofScripture,thinksit wrong,then,sinceitisdone againsthiswill,heisguilty ofnomoralfaultandisnot forcedtoconsenttowhat hethinkswrung.Norwould thedoctor,doingwhathe thinksright,beguiltyofany moralfault.Ontheother hand,owingtotheabsence oflegalprotectionandthe possibilityofbeingsuedfor assaultonthepersonofthe patient,thedoctorwouldbe excusedfromanydutyof forcingablood-transfusion onanunwillingpatient,and couldallowhimtoputup withtheconsequenceshe bringsuponhimselfbyhis obstinaterefusal.
CASEOFACHILD
Q.:Whatofachildwhowill certainlydiewithoutthe blood-transfusionwhich theJehovahWitnessparentsforbid?
scienceisnotyourconscience;thattheyarejustifiedfromtheirownpointof viewinfollowingtheircon. science(suchasitis)rather thanyours;andthat,in viewofthelegalposition,in theinterestsbothofyourselfandthemedicalprofession,youareatleastnot morallyobligedtoactaccordingtowhathappensto bemedicallyindicated.
Q.:Wouldcompliancewith theJehovahWitnessesbe theoreticallyandethically correct,attheexpenseof thepatient'slife?
R.:Inviewofthelegal position,yes.Butifadoctor waspreparedtotaketherap shouldcivillawbeinvoked againsthim,hewouldcommitnomoralfaultasfaras conscienceisconcernedin givingthetransfusion.
TRAGEDYFORALL CONCERNED
Q.:Mostofuswouldfeelit almostmurdertostandby andwatchapatientdie, ourhandstiedbythemisguidedteachingofthe JehovahWitnesses,
R.:Onecanunderstand yourfeelings.Butyousay "almost"murder, realising thatactualmurdersupposes thedeliberateintentionof killinganotherperson. Neitherthedoctornorthe JehovahWitnesseshave suchanintention.Bothhope thatthepatientwillafter allsurvive.TheJehovah Witnessesintendtheobservanceofwhattheymistakenlythinktobethewill ofGod,resigningthemselves toapossibledisastrousconsequencewhichcanbe avoidedonlybymeansthey donotfeelmorallyfreeto permit.Thecaseisbetter describedasatragedyboth forthemandforthedoctor whofeelsjustifiedinrefusingtoactwithouttheirconsentinsteadoftakingthe lawintohisownhandsand doingwhathepersonally believestobeamorally permissibleandnec,:ssary procedure.

WHYASCRIBED TODAVID?
Q.:HowcouldDavid havewrittenapsalm whichwasobviously writtenbysomeone

TheDouayVersionderivesthetitlefromthe Greektranslationofthe OldTestamentmadeby theJewsofAlexandria aboutthe3rdcentury B.C.Thereferenceto Daviddoesnotappear intheoriginalHebrew textoftheOldTestament.
