Sevenyearsofdroughtin CentralAustraliaanddisastrousfloodsinnorthern rivershaveaggravatedproblemsforallconcernedwith thefutureoftheTerritory -butespeciallyforthemissionaries.

Foryears,BishopO'Loughlinhasbeenstrivingtoerect amodestCathedralatDarwin,Australia'snorthern gateway.

Stoneuponstone,itisbeingbuiltbyreligiousand laymissionariesbecausethe resourcesofthedioceseare notsufficienttopayordinarytradesmen.

TofeedthehungryAustraliannativepeople,to clothethenaked,tonurse thesick(includinghundredsoflepers),toeducate thousandsofyoungblack Australiansandprovidea decentfutureforthem,to bringtheSacramentstothe sixthousandCatholicsscatteredoverthisvastwilderness-thisisthechallenge, thatconfrontstheBishop ofDarwin.his33priests,56 religiousSistersand15religiousbrothers,andasmall butgrowingbandofdevotedlaymissionaries.

Neverbeforeinthiscountrywassuchasmalland poorlyequippedarmyconfrontedbysuchatremendousTask.

WhenBishopO'Loughlin reportedonhismissionat thelastmeetingofthe ArchbishopsandBishopsof Australia,therewasanimmediateresponse.

TheCatholicpeopleof Australiamustbetold EveryBishopinhisown diocesewouldsponsoran appealfortheNorthern TerritoryMissionandthe diocesannewspapersofAustraliawouldbeentrusted withthetaskofcarrying thehierarchy'sappealto theCatholicpeople.

"SUCCESSFULAPPEAL"

Twoyearsagoasimilar appealwasmadeonbehalf oftheKimberleymissionin thefarnorth-west.

Stirredbytherevelations ofpovertyandheroicsacrificeonthepartofthemissionaries,theAustralian peoplerespondedwithan amazingburstofgenerosity.

Nearly£70,000wassubscribedinafewweeks.

WiththismoneytheKimberleyMissionwassaved.

Aboriginesettlementswere reconstructedanddecentlivingquartersprovidedfor themissionaries.

Transportwasprovided forthepriestsontheirendlessjourneys.Aproperty waspurchasedtotrainyoung meninmodernstock-breedingandagriculturalmethodsandtohelpmakethe missionself-supporting.

OnMay17,theHolyFathergrantedanaudiencetotheNational DirectorsofPontifical MissionaryOrganisa- tions.Presentalsoat theaudiencewereofficialsoftheSacred Congregationforthe Propagationofthe Faithtogetherwith thestaffandstudents ofthePontificalUrbanCollege.

Inthecourseofthe audience,theHoly Fatherblessedthefoundationstoneofthenew extensionstothePontificalUrbanCollege, whichwillprovideaccommodationforseminariansstudyingphilosophy.

Inthecourseofhis address,thePopesaid thatthisblessingmarkedanewprocress."Itrepresentsahousewhich isbecomingbiggerin ordertowelcomethe

ever-increasingnumber ofsons,"saidtheHoly Father.

Theinitiativeofthe SacredCongregationfor thePropagationofthe Faithinextendingthe Collegehasreceivedthe wholeheartedsupportof theHierarchyofAustralia.Some£80,000is beinggivenforthenew building.Inaddition, therehavebeennumerousgenerouscontributionsfromthemany paststudentsofthe CollegeamongtheAustralian'jergy.Speaking totheApostolicDelegate.Archbishopde Furstenberg,whilsthe wasinRome,Ordinal Agagianiansaidthathe hadbeengreatlyencouragedbythesupportthattheprojecthad receivedfromtheeast studentsoftheCollege inAustralia.

INALGIERS,alocalparishpriestwasshotandkilled onemeringfromofferingMassinhischurch.Hewas FatherVincentTherer,wholessthanaweekearlier hadjoined31otherspriestsinapublicappealcallingon theCatholicsoftheAlgeriancapitaltoworkforpeace andbrotherhood.

FatherThererwasaBelgianpriestoftheNamur diocesewhohadbeenworkinginAlgeriaforseveral years. Hismurdertookplacein frontofhischurchatBirmandreis,ontheedgeof town.FatherThererhad justofferedMass,andwas abouttogetinhiscar, parkedinfrontofthe church.Asecondcarsuddenlypulledabreast.Five shotsrangout.Thepriest crumbledtotheground, shotthroughthehead.

Theterrorists'carsped away,andnowitnesses daredtosaywhetherthe murdererswereEuropeans orMoslems.

Thepublicappealinwhich FatherThererhadjoined onlyafewdaysearlierwas issuedasEuropeanextremistssympathetictothegoals oftheoutlawedright-wing SecretArmyOrgzanisation hadsteppeduptheirmass slaughterofMoslemsinthe city.Moslemgunmenkilled 17EuropeansonMay14, andtheEuropeanterrorists

respondedbyslaying93 Moslemsinthenexttwo days.FivemoreEuropeans werealsoslain.

Thepriestsintheirmanifestohadimploredtheir parishionersandther friendstoremainfaithfulto thedemandsoftheGospel andhonourthenameChristian.TheyurgedallAlgerianstolivetogether peacefullyandworktogetherforthecommongood.

Theyalsovoicedtheir completeunityofmindand heartwithHisHolinessthe PopeandArchbishopLeon EtienneDuvalofAlgiers whohavebothrepeatedly urgedareturntobrotherhoodtoendthebloodshed inAlgeria.

THE DEDICATED BROTHER

Ontheoccasionofthebi-centenaryofthebirthof EdmundIgnatiusRice,founderoftheCongregationof theChristianBrothersofIreland,theChurchinAustraliahasreasontocongratulatethishandofReligious menwhohavedonesomuchforAustraliaandthe Church.

Abare67yearsaftertheCongregationwasfounded inIreland,itwasestablishedinAustraliaandfromone foundationinMelbourneithasgrowntoagigantic systemofthreeProvinceswithover1,000Brothers dedicatedtotheirownsanctificationandtheChristian educationofyouthinsome138institutions.

TounderstandthisgrowthinAustraliaandNew Zealand,letalonetherestoftheworldwherethey areestablished,itisnecessarytoknowwhatconstitutes aBrotherandhowhecandedicatehimselftothislife workofteaching.

Itispreciselythisconstitutionwhichgiveshimhis excellenceandenableshimtosodedicatehimself.This constitutionisthatwhichmakeshimaReligiousin thestrictsenseacceptedbytheChurch.Ithasitsown excellence,itsownmethodofsanctificationandit MarkstheReligiouspersonout,distinctfromeither priestorlayperson.

Theexcellenceofthisisinthecompletegivingof himselftoGodandrespondingtoGod'slovethrough thepracticeoftheevangelicalcounsels.Heconsecrates himselfbyanactofhiswill,publiclyexpressedand acceptedbytheChurch.Bythevowsofpoverty, chastityandobedienceutteredbytheReligiousheis soconsecratedtoGodthateveryactbecomesanact ofreligion.

Itisinthisthatheissanctified.Itisthroughthis thathecontinuallystrivestoperfecthimself,thegift hehasofferedtoGod.Itisinthisthattheworkwhich theChristianBrother,theReligiousman,hastakenon receivesitsownperfection.

Smallwonder,then,thattheresultswhichhavebeen achievedineducationthroughoutAustraliashouldbe astheyare.Ithasnotbeenthroughasacramental assistance,asinthegracereceivedattheordination ofapriestorthemarriageofalayperson.Ithasbeen through'thisv.-onderfulspiritwhichmakesaReligious whatheis-apersonGIVENtoGod,freelyofferinghis talentsunderobediencetothefulfilmentofGod'swork.

ThispersonalsanctificationthroughbeingaReligious mustmakeamarkedimpressionontheparticularwork takenonbytheChristianBrother.Itwillinfluence-as ithassincethefoundation-everyyoungpersonwho isplacedunderhischarge.Itmust,becauseofthe fusionofthetwocharacteristicswhichmakeupthis teacher.

The.ChristianBrothersinAustraliaarehopingthat theirfounderwillreachthestageshortlyofbeing declaredoneoftheSaintsoftheChurch.Itcouldnot beanidlehope.

Intheirrejoicingonthebi-centenaryofhisbirth,all thosethousandswhohavebeenmouldedbytheir teachinghavereasontorejoicealso.

Itisanobviouspointtomakethatthislifeof dedicatedteachingisamostsuitableoneforour youngmen.Thisisevidencedbythegrowthofthe Congregation,assistedforthemostpartbyyoung Australianmenwhominimisetheideaofsacrificeand seetheexcellenceofdedicationtoGodforthe perfectionofoneselfinthesublimevocationofteaching others.

Spain'sCatholicActionlabourgroups-theYoung ChristianWorkers(J.O.C.)andtheCatholicWorkers' Guilds(H.O.A.C.)-jointlyissuedapamphletdeclaring theirsupportforthestrikersinsofarasChristian socialprinciplesarethecommonbasisoftheirdemands.

Thepamphletcalledonthegovernmenttoendthe legalbanonstrikes,DEMANDEDjustwagesforall industrialworkersandURGEDco-ownershipandcomanagementofplants, CoadjutorArchbishopSegundoGarciaofOviedo, anotherSeeinthestrikearea,issuedapastoralsaying: "Becauseoftheevilswhichallstrikesstirup,weask management,workersandallmenofgoodwilland earnestintentionstomakeanall-outeffortnotonlyto establishmodellabourconditions,buttorebuildharmony,understandingandthetrustthatiswilledbyGod forsocietyandwhichweurgeandthenationaleconomy needs." H.Bushnellwasonceasked,"Aterall,mustnotour childrenanswerforthemselves"Heresponded:"This veryoftenamountstoanegationoftheresponsibilities oftheparentaloffice."Suchparentssubsideintoa habitofnegligence,liketheostrich.Theburdenofa fatherandmothertowardschildrenisnotdiminished, butincreasedbythepersonallibertyofthechildren. Someparentsaretimidaboutthemoralandthe spiritualtrainingoftheirchildrenbecauseoftheirown failuretobeeither.Acelebratedeconomist,LePlay, oncewrote:"UntilIcansaygraceatmealswithout astonishinganyofmyguests.IwillnotbelievethatI havedoneenoughforthereturnofgoodhabits."Rene Bazinrelateshowedifiedhewaswhilevisitingthe northofFrancetoobservehowthefamilyofanindustrialisthadsaidgracefaithfullybeforemeals "assigningeachchildadaytolead."

FatherHadRemedyForLying

TheotherdayaNewYorktaxi-drivertoldmethat his18-year-oldsonwouldnotobeyhim,norwouldhe study.Hesaidthatherememberedwhenhewentto aJewishschoolasaboy;hecamehomeonedayand toldhisfather:"TheRabbislappedmefornoreason whatever."Thetaxi-driverrecalledthathisfather toldhim:"TheRabbipunishedyou,eitherbecauseyou weredisobedient,orbecauseyoudidnotstudyyour lessons,orbecauseyouwerepayingnoattention.For thatlie,Ishallgiveyouaspanking.AndIwantyouto rememberthatthereisacloserelationshipbetween theplacewhenyouwerespankedandthebrain."The taxi-driversaidthathehasnotliedsince.

Themainissuewaswages.Minerswereaskinga minimumwageofabout£1/1/-aday.Theircurrent rateof12/11to13/9foraneight-hourdayisnot enoughinthefaceofrisinglivingcosts,theyheld.

Alsoinvolvedinthelabourunrestisthelongsmoulderingantipathytowardsthegovernment'slabour policies.Theseincludea25-year-oldlawwhichmakes strikesillegal,withparticipantspunishablebygaol sentences,andthegovernment"tradeunion"monopoly.

TheonlyindustrialunionorganisationlegalinSpain istheFalangist-controlledOrganizacionSindical.This isa"vertical"systemwhichincludesmanagement, techniciansandlabourinthesameunion,withthetop leadersappointedbythegovernment.

TheCatholicActiongroupsactiveinthelabourfield havenotradeunionstanding.ButtheJ.O.C.and.the H.O.A.C.havefiledanumberofprotestsduringthe pastcoupleofyearsagainstthelackofrealfreedom andrepresentationfortheworkers.

Actionists'RoleInLabour'sField

Astrikers'representativeinMadridhasbeenquoted as'statingthattheleadershipandorganisationfor.the strikeswasprovidedbytwotothreethousandCatholic Actionworkers.

ArchbisopGarciainhispastoraldealtatlengthwith theroleofCatholicactivistsinthefieldoflabour."The missionoftheCatholicguildsandCatholicAction organisations,whetherofworkersoremployers,isnone otherthanthatoftheChurchitself,beingrelatedto theapostolateofthebishops,"hesaid."Theiraim, furthermore,isthatoftrainingpersonstobewell, informedconcerningthesocialteachingoftheChurch, andtobeitsdefenders,goastoexercisetheapostolate amongtheircolleagues.

"Membersthustrained,withtheirpersonalresponsibility,canactfreelyintheirownenvironment,withoutinvolvingtheirorganisations,andwiththedirect aimofbringingChristandHisdoctrinetoallhuman activitiesofthesphereinwhichtheyliveandwork.

"Workersandemployersaremembersofthesame Christ,enjoythesamedignity,andaspire,fromthis world,tosupernaturalhappiness.Iftheseprinciples wereconsideredandbroughtintopractice,harmony wouldnotbetoodifficult."

The56-year-oldprelatespokeoftheneedforlabour tobe"justlycompensated,"andsaidthatthecurrent "regrettabledisputehasbroughtanxiety,griefandne smallfeartothehomesofallthosewhodependon workintheminesandfactories."

Hesaidthatwhiletheeconomyshouldbebasedea "thepersonalinitiativeofcitizens,"thisdoesnotrule outthefactthat"theStatecanandattimesshould interveneinmanagement,adheringtotheprincipleef subsidiarity."

ArchbishopGarcia'spastoralwasissuedataboutthe sametimethatEcclesia,aMadridweeklywhichisthe officialjournalofSpanishCatholicAction,wasdefendingtherightofworkerstostrike.Ecclesiaassertedthat onlyoverridingnationalinterestscouldjustifydeclaringstrikesillegal. Itsaidalsothatthegovernmentshould"take measurestobringaboutthequickandthoroughsolution oftheeconomic,labourandsocialdisputesthatusually serveasexcusestostrike."

AllthoseconnectedinanywaywiththeChristianBrothers 'rejoicedlastyearinthewelcomenewsthatapreliminarystepwas takeninthecauseofBeatificationofEdmundIgnatiusRice.

Itisappropriate,therefore,thatweshouldmakethecelebrationofthebi-centenaryof hisbirthanopportunityforreassessingEdmundRice'scontributiontothespiritualdevelopmentofChrist'sMysticalBody.

EdmundRicewasbornin Westcourt,inthevicinityof Callan,CountyKilkenny,on thefirstdayofJune,1762. Hisfather,afarmerofsubstantialproperty,couldaffordtosendEdmund,the fourthofhissevensons,to thenearby"hedge"school inMoateLane.Theyoung Edmundattendedthis "hedge"schoolfrom1771to 1776,andthenforafew yearsattendedaschoolconductedbyaCatholicgentlemaninKilkennycity.In 1778hisuncle,awealthy traderinthebustlingcity ofWaterford,invitedEdmundtobeanapprentice clerkinhisbusiness.

ItwasatWaterford,asa youngmanof23already admittedtopartnership withhisuncle,thatEdmund married.Hisearlybiographerstelluslittleofthis event.AssoofteninEdmundRice'slife,weknow littleaboutthejoyous events,butmuchaboutthe sorrows,forafterafew yearshiswifedied,andhis onlychild,adaughter,becameapermanentinvalid.

TheEducator...

In1795Mr.MichaelRice died,andEdmundinherited hisuncle'svastfortune.It wasaboutthistimethat Edmundfirstconsidered sellinghisbusinessandenteringamonasteryin France.By1800hisdecision hadbeentaken.Hesoldhis business(thesaleofthe affairsrealised£50,000), buthedidnotentera monasteryinFrance.Insteadheofferedhisservices andwealthtotheBishopof Waterford,Dr.Hussey. Fromthistimeuntilhis

deathin1844,EdmundRice wasconcerneddirectlyor indirectlywiththeChristian educationoftheyouthof Ireland.Fellow-Irishmen, fromallwalksoflife,were inspiredbyhisexample,and offeredtoteachinhis schools,andliveunderhis direction.Theseschools, opentoall,becamecentres ofbothreligiousandsecular learning.ThusEdmundRice becametheinstigatorand championofamovement thatresultedinthecomplete reformationofeducationin Ireland,andthefounderof areligiousteachingcongregationthatperpetuateshis workthroughouttheworld.

TheManofGod Butwhenwestudythe lifeofEdmundRice,itistoo easytoassumethatthese achievementsaloneconstitutetruegreatness.Infact itissoeasytoattempta statisticalanalysisofhis lifework,intermsofschools foundedandpupilstaught, thatwecouldbecomelostin admirationofthesevery achievementsandlosesight ofEdmundRice,theman.

Ofteninthelivesofthe saintsthereisthistantalisingsilenceonthatonepoint wearesointerestedin-the essentialhumanityofthe person,thehumantraitsthat enableustodistinguishone personalityfromanother. Thosemightyfiguresof antiquity,theFathersofthe desert,aresoshroudedby legendandmarvelthatwe forgetthattheysharedour commonhumanity,withits originalsin,andthetemptationsoflife!weforget,too, thattheybecamesaints,not somuchbecausetheywere extraordinarymen,butordinarymenwho,corresponded withGod'sgracetoan extraordinarydegree.

Therearesofewdetailsof EdmundRice'slifepriorto 1800thatitisnotsurprising that,tothesuperficialobserver,hemightseemto havelivedtheordinarylife ofagoodCatholcman.And yetthatmomentousdecision toofferhislifetoDr.Hussey isindicativeofsanctityfar beyondtheordinary.We knowthatthetrialsatManresahadmuchtodowith thevocationofSt.Ignatius, butwhatofEdmundRice?

Whatinteriorstrugglehad therebeenbeforeheobeyed thatcounselofperfection: "Gosellwhatthouhast andthenfollowMe"?What greatloveofGodandneighbourmusthavemotivated thissacrificeofallpossessionstotheserviceofGod!

Canwebegintoappreciate theunflinchingcourageand fortitudeofthismanof38, carryingthroughascheme that,tohisbusinessassociates,seemedsofoolhardy? Andtowhomdidheteach?

"Assoonastheschool wasopeneditwasthronged withroughanduncultivated grown-upboys,aswellas thechildrenofthesoldiers. Theroomwasfilledwith boys,poorlads,utterlyignorantofeventhefirst notionsofreligiousorsecularknowledge.Theywere rudeandroughinmanner andnotatallamenableto thesalutaryrestraintsof schooldiscipline."Theclassroomisoftendescribedasa placeoftrial.Whatdid EdmundRice,theuntrained teacher,sufferinthoseearly days?

Inthefieldofhumanendeavouritmustbeconceded thatEdmundRicewasa greatman.In19th-century Irelandthefewschoolsper-

miltedbylawwereopen onlytothosewhoaccepted religiousinstructionfrom anAnglicanminister.There wereotherschools,known as"hedge"schools,butthese werepayschools,andtechnicallyillegal.Forthevast majoritytherewasnoeducation.EdmundRicehad sufficientvisiontorealise thetragicimplicationsofa systemofeducationthatdeniedparentstherightto educatetheirchildrenin accordancewiththeirreligiousideals,andthecourage,generosity,andfaith tochallengethatsystem. Itisnowonderthata fellow-Irishmancanwrite: "OneofthegreatIrishmen ofthelastcentury-oneof thegreatestIrishmenofall time-istheimmortalEdmundRice,ofwhomtoo littleisknowninthisage ofmediocrities."

HestandsinthehabitofhisOrder,wearinga great-cloaklikeasymboloftheprotectionand securityhisschoolsprovide.Ina:massivesimple gestureheholdsuptheBible,whichservesasa baseforamodelofhisO'ConnellSchool.asindeed itdidforhiswholeconceptofChristianEducation. Theseareonlythe"parochial"needs,butthemissionariesmustalsotakecare ofthespiritualneedsof scatteredCatholicfamilies onthecattlestationsandin miningareaswhich-areoutsideordinaryparishboonciar4es. VehiclesoftheLand-RovertypewhicharenowoperatingintheKimberley's asaresultofthe1960appealwouldbringmanyan isolatedCatholicgroupclosertothepriestandtheSacramentsandwouldproveto beaspecialblessingintime ofillnessanddeath.

Finally,therearethe "specialworks"whichare familiarenoughtoTerritoreans,butallbutunknown toCatholicsinthemoresettledandprosperousStates.

FirstoftheseistheEast ArmLeprosariumnearDarwin,builtandfinancedby theCommonwealthGovernmentandconductedbythe SistersofOurLadyofthe SacredHeart.

Hereisauniqueexample ofco-operationbetween ChurchandStateinthefulfilmentofagravesocialand moralobligation-butno onewoulddaretocallthe Government'scontribution "StateAid."

Nearlyallthepatientsare aborigines-andbecauseof generousGovernmentfinancing,theyareassuredof thefinestandmostmodern medicalcareandnursing.

ButtheBishopofDarwinhastodohissharetoo. churchesandschools,but,naturally,theydonothave TheChurchatEastArm a,senseof"belonging."

Therefore,withfewexceptions,theyarenotinclinedtobecometooinvolved inhelpingtheChurch.

Thepart-aboriginals,althoughnominallyfullcitizens,donotinfactgreatly contributetothesupport ofthecommunityorthe Church.

Yet,theyhavesoulsto saveandtheChurchcannot neglectthedivinecommissiontoteachthem.

Thebuildingneedsofthe NorthernTerritory"parishes"arestaggering.

TheDarwinCathedral hasstilltobefinishedand

AsthestoryoftheNorthernTerritoryMissionunfoldsduringthenextfew weeks,itwillpresentanumber,ofstrikingchallengesto thegenerosityofCatholics inareasonablycomfortable position"onthehomefront."

THECHALLENGE

Themosteffectivechallenge,ofcourse,willbethe self-sacrificinglivesofthe Catholicmissionarieswhose effortswillbelargelywasted unlesstheyreceivethehelp necessarytoliveandto spreadtheGospel.

Butthereisanotherchallengethatcanheignored onlyatthepriceofourselfrespect-theoutstanding missionaryandsocialactivitiesofProtestantgroups.

Whatarethenon-Catholic Churchesdoing?

TheLutheranshavea flourishingmissionbasedon HermansburginCentral Australia.Itisgenerously supportedinmanpowerand resourcesbyastrongand activegroupamongtheLutherancommunityinSouth Australia.

TheMethodistMissionis alreadyoperatinginArnhem Landandissubsidisedby theSydneyMissionBoard. Sofar,therehasbeenlittle Catholicpenetrationofthis area.

TheChurchMissionary SocietyalsooperatesChurch ofEnglandmissionsinArnhemLand.AnglicanBrothersoftheGoodShepherd fromNewSouthWalesstaff parishesatAliceSprings, KatherineandTennant CreekandtheAustralian BoardofMissionsconducts achildren'shospitalfor partaboriginalsinAlice Springs.

TheAustralianInland Mission(Presbyterian)hasa finerecordofserviceand eventheSalvationArmyhas itsownplane.

TheBaptistsandtheAboriginesInlandMission(nondenominationalProtestant) arealsoactiveandreceive substantialsupportfromthe variousAustralianStates.

Buttheconditionofwomenisonerealitythatsimplycannotbe coveredup.

WEHADNOSOONERCROSSEDTHEBORDER INTORUSSIATHANISAWTHEFIRSTOFMANY SCENESDEPICTINGWOMAN'SROLEUNDER COMMUNISM.

Thetrainhadstoppedforafewminutes.Directly outsidemywindowwasasmallcreweitherputting downrailsorrepairingtheroadbed.Therewerea numberofwomeninthecrewworkingindustriously overarailroadtie.Dressedinthetypicalpeasant fashion,withlittlewhitehandkerchiefsontheirheads, theyworkedawaywithoutlookingupattheinquiring passengers. AllalongtherailroadsinRussiathisscenewas duplicated.ManytimesIsawwholecrewsofwomen doingthisbackbreakingworkunderthedirectionofa maleforeman.Indistantanddesolateareastheyare requiredtoliveinthetentsandmakeshiftcampsthat couldbeseenalongthetracks.

WomeninRussiadoeveryconceivabletypeofwork. Theyareinvolvedexclusivelyinmanyjobsthat,inthe Westernworld,arereservedforthestrongersex.They takecareofalmostalltransportation.

Besidesworkingontherails,theyactasporters, conductorsandbrakemen.Theydrivethebig,heavy electricbusesofthecitytransportationsystems.They runthesubways.Theonlyexceptiontothealmost completefemaletransportationmonopolywerethe taxi-driversandairlinepilots.

Womenhandlealargepartofconstructionworkin housing.I,haveseenmanyofthemlayingbricks,

mixingcement,doingironandcarpentrywork,and workingatotherjobsonnewhousingprojects.

InthefactoriesIvisitedthecontributionofRussian womentoindustrywasinfullevidence.Theyranbig machinery,derricksandlifts.Theymadeupcrews thatmanuallyliftedandtransportedheavyequipment. InonebigtractorfactoryIwasespeciallyimpressedby anall-femalecrewofpainterswhowereswinging aroundatratherimpressiveheightsonflimsyputties andscaffolding.Theywereusingbigspraygunswith tanksstrappedtotheirbacks.Bythetimetheycame

BeautyWorkedInUnusualSurroundings

OneofthesaddestscenesIsawwasinKiev.Outside thebeautiful11th-centuryChurchofSt.Sophia(now beingrebuiltastheStateMuseumofArchitectureand History)isalargeopensquare.Thesurfacewas blacktoppedandcrackedinseveralplaces.Almost immediatelyoutsidethemainentrancewasayoung girlworkingtorepairthecracks.Shewasabout17 or18yearsold. Shehadonaplainprintdressandworeasimple littlebandanaonherhead.Thisyoungworkerwas extraordinarilyattractive.Herhairwaslightandher featuressimpleandclassical.Shecouldeasilyhave servedasamodelforoneofBotticelli'sangels.Her facewasthekindfoundintheidealisticsettingofa renaissancepastoralscene.

TheCommunistpartyisawareofthis.Butbecause thesituationissowidespread,itsimplycandonothing aboutit.Ifthecommunistscouldpullacurtainaround thistheycertainlywould,fortheyaresensitivetothe unfailingreactionofshock.

Thefactistheysimplycannot.Thesespectaclesare toointimatelyassociatedwiththeSovieteconomy.The womandoingaman'sjobisasmuchapartofthe communistpanoramaastheloudspeakersinthemain squares,thepropagandapostersandtheever-present statuesofLenin.

WhileSovietPremierNikitaKhrushchevwasinthe UnitedStatesin1960,hemadeaninterestingcomment onthefeminineandattractiveAmericanwoman. Capitalismhasmadeherthatway,hesaid.Inasense hewascorrect.

Itisalsocorrect,tosayoftheSovietwoman,that communismhasmadeherwhatsheis.Thecommunist

Woman'sinterestsareindoors-thehome,decoration, artisticdesignandindividuals.Mentalkaboutsports andadventure,womentalkaboutpeopleandstyle. Why?Thecommunistanswers:becausetheseinterests, characteristicsandfunctionshavebeenforcedupon thembycapitalisticsociety.

Communismisnotworriedabouttheman,butitis interestedinliberatingthewomanfromherforced slavery.Theburdenofmotherandhomemakermust beliftedfromher.Beingcoyandgentle,interestedin beauty,emotional,subjective,andconservativehas nothingtodowithwomanliness.Communismpromises tofreewomenfromthishorribleimposition.Ithas keptitspromise.Ithasfreedherfromthoserolesand waysthatweconsidertobenaturaltoher.

Communismsetouttodestroythosedifferencesthat keepthewomaninaninferiorstate,todestroythe bourgeoisideaoffemininityandmakethesexesequal. Leninsaid:"Nonationcanbefreewhenhalfthe populationisenslavedinthekitchen."

Communismhassucceeded.Womanisnowfreeto workalongsidethemantoconstructthecommunist utopia.Sheisfreetotakepartinheavyindustryand construction:freetoshareman'sworkandman's interest.Thisnew-foundfreedomonthepartofthe womanhasinturnfreedmillionsofmenfor-military duty.

Itiscertainthattheaccomplishmentsofthecommunistsystemwouldhavebeenimpossiblewithoutthe contributionofthehardenedfemalemuscles.Their contributionhasnotgoneunnoticed.Theexhausting anddeformingeffortofSovietwomanhoodhasbeen rewarded,notsomuchwithroubles,butwiththe officialproclamationthatSovietwomenenjoythe greatestequalityandarethemostprivilegedcitizens intheworld.

Therehasbeendisagreementaboutthedateforthe celebrationofEastereversinceChristianity'sfirst years.InsomechurchesintheEastitwasalways celebratedonthe14thdayofthemonthofNisaninthe JewishCalendar.Thefollowersofthisusagewere calledthe"Quartodecimani"(Fourteeners).

ButintheWest,EasterwascelebratedontheSunday followingthefullmoonofspring.Bythesecond centurythedifferencesbetweenthedatesbecameso acutethatittookSt.Polycarp,adiscipleofSt.John theEvangelist,andSt.Ireneus,BishopofLyons,to restorerelativepeace. Thecontroversywassolved,onpaperatleast,atthe CouncilofNiceain325,whenthepracticeofthe WesternChurchprevailed.Itwasagreedfirst,that EastershouldalwaysbecelebratedonaSunday; second,thattheChristianEastershouldnotcoincide withtheJewishPasch;third,thatEastershouldfall onthefirstSundayafterthe14thdayofthemonth ofNisan.

ItwasfurthermoreagreedthatthePatriarchof Alexandriashouldbeentrustedwiththetaskofmaking thenecessarycalculationseveryyearandwouldannouncetoallthechurches,ingoodtime,thedateon whichEastershouldbecelebrated.

Thearrangementprovedimpracticalanduncertaintiesanddisagreementscontinued.Itwasonlythesixth century,asaresultoftheworkofacertainDionsius theSmall,thatascientificbasiswasfoundforthe futuredeterminationofthedateofEaster.

DifferencesinthecelebrationofChristmashavealso continuedtoexistbetweentheEastandtheWest,with mostoftheOrthodoxchurchesoftheEastcelebrating itonJanuary7.
