PLANTORELIEVEECONOMIC BURDENOFLARGE.FAMILIES

Ina24-pagepamphletjustpublished,entitled"ACasefor GradedChildEndowmentandIncreasedMaternityAllowances," theNationalCatholicWelfareCommitteeputsforwardcertain proposalsdesignedtolessentheeconomicburdenoffamilies, especiallythoseofmorethanaveragesize.

TheNationalCatholicWelfareCommittee considersthattheimmediateprovisionof child_endowmentatprogressivelyincreasing ratesasthenumberofchildreninafamily increases,togetherwithhighermaternity allowances,woulddomuchtorelievethe hardshipexperiencedbymanyfamiliesand wouldbeapositivecontributiontothe nation'ssocialwelfare.

Childendowmentrateshaveremainedunchanged since1950whilethepresentmaternityallowanceswere adjustedlastin1943.Overtheinterveningyears inflationhasmorethanhalvedtherealvalueinpurchasingpowerofthesetwofamilyallowances.

THENATIONALCATHOLICFAMILYWELFARE RECOMMENDSINCREASESIN:

*CHILDENDOWMENT:

by5/-gweekforthethirdchild,10/-aweek forthefourthchild.15/-aweekforthefifth childand,E1aweekforthesixthandsubsequentchildreninfamiliesandforchildrenin institutions.

*MATERNITYALLOWANCESto:

(a)£30-wheretherearenootherchildren under16yearsandforeachchildinmultiplebirth.

(b)£20-wherea childrenunder

Thefollowingadvantagesofthesuggested graduatedscaleofchild endowmentarelisted:

Itiscompletelyinaccordwiththeoriginalpurposeofendowment,which wastoenablethefamily wherethereismorethan onechildtoliveaccording tothestandardfixedand acceptedforafamilyin whichthereisonlyone child.

Itgiveseffecttothe policyoftheGovernmentas statedbytheMinisterof SocialServicesin1950when hesaid:"TheGovernment believesthatthemosteffectivewaytobridgethegap betweentheeconomicneeds ofthefamilyandtheincome ofthefamilyisthepayment ofsomeformofallowance whichwillincreasewiththe sizeofthefamily ."

Itwouldbeatleasta partialfulfilmentbythe Governmentofthedebt whichisowedinsocial justicetothefamilyman whohasmorethanthe averagenumberofchildren.

Itwouldservetolessen thedisabilityusiderwhich themediumandlargesize familylivesinAustralia.

IPItwouldbearecognitionofthefactthatthe largerfamilyismakinga vitalcontributiontothe welfareofthenationanda welcomereassurancethat thenationasawholeis preparedtogivethe'backing necessarytothosefamilies sothatthechildreninthem

motherhasoneormore 16years.

AtatimewhenAustraliaisanxioustobuildup itspopulationbynaturalincrease,itwouldtendtoremove,atleastpartly,the economicreasonsforworkingmenrestrictingthesize `oftheirfamilies.

ItappliesprinciplesacceptedinotherSocialServiceBenefitswheresome extrahelpisavailablefor thelargerfamilywhichis deemedtobeinspecial need,e.g.thisyearinintroducingtheBilltoincrease theratesofunemployment andsicknessbenefitsthe MinisterforSocialServices, Mr.Robertson,emphasised thattheGovernmentwas speciallyanxioustoimprove thelotofthesickandunemployedpersonswhohad largerfamiliestosupport.

Itscostiscomparativelyeconomicalcompared withotherschemestobenefitthefamilythroughincreasedendowment,costing lessthananincreaseof5/perweekin,endowmentfor thefirstchild.

TheNationalCatholic WelfareCommitteebelieves thatmotherandchildren meritveryhighpriority whenaGovernmenthasto decidehowmuchandin whatwaymoneytakenfrom thenationalincomeshould beredistributedtomeetthe greatestneedsofthepeople andtorenderthegreatest possiblebenefittothe nation.

OtherSocialServicebenefitslikeOldAge,Invalid andWidows'Pensions,SicknessandUnemployment Benefitshavebeenmor thantrebledsincethelast adjustmentwasmadeto MaternityAllowances.in sofarasFamilyAllowances likeChildEndowmentand MaternityAllowanceshelp tolessentheeconomicstrain andthematerialburdens associatedwithmotherhood andfamilylife,theyplaya partinthepromotionof familylife.Buttoachieve theirpurpose,theseallowancesneedtobereasonably adequate.

UnlessthesetwoimportantSocialServicebenefits receivetheearlyattention oftheGovernmentanda substantialadjustmentis madetothem,itisconsideredthattheywillbecomelessandlesssignificant andmeaningfulinthefamilylifeofthenation.

Finally,theN.C.W.C.recommendstheformationof anAdvisoryCounciltothe MinisterofSocialServices asanaidtotheGovernment towardstherealisationof thegoalofsocialjusticefor all,forthefamliy,forthe motherandherchildren,for theaged,theinvalid,the

widow,thesickandtheunemployed.

TheNationalCatholic WelfareCommitteewas formedin1957bythe BishopsofAustralia.Each ArchdioceseinAustraliais representedontheCommittee.Sevenpriestsonthe Cmimitteearedirectorsin therespectivecapitalcities oforganisationapproved bytheFederalAttorneyGeneralasapprovedMarriageGuidanceorganisationsundertheMatrimonial CausesAct.

Duringthepastyeartheyhovepulledatit. Butstilltheyhavenotpluckedit. Theypreferittofallsoftlyintotheirhands.

Nobodywhoknows communismandtheFar Eastcandoubtthatthe communistsofChinaand

NorthernVietnamwant Laos,theirnext-door neighbour,tobeunder tightcommunistrule.

NorthVietnamesearmy menwereandareinLaos. Russianplaneshavebeen ferryingsuppliestothecommunistPathetLaoforcesin Laos.TheseIlyushinplanes havebeentouchingdownon Hanoiairfieldenroute.The Chinesecommunistshave beenbuildingaroadfrom ChinaintoLaos. WhenIwasinLaosa yearago,thecommunist forcesclearlyhadtheupper hand.

IwasinThakhekwhenit seemedtobeonlyamatter ofhoursuntilthecommunistswouldtakethetown.

Theydidn'ttakeit.ThakhekisontheMekongRiVer, withThailandontheother side.

Theydidn'tmakeany seriousefforttotakeVientiane,theadministrative capital,whenIwasthere. It,too,isontheMekong.

TRUTHISONE

MANYPEOPLEHAVEVOICEDCONCERNATONE TIMEORANOTHERONTHEPOSSIBILITYTHAT THECHURCHWILLMAKENOCONCESSIONS TOWARDSTHEUNITYOFALLCHRISTIANS.

Theyconsiderthattheverydogmaticattitudeofthe ChurchinthefulfilmentoftheworksofChrist-that thereshallbeonefoldandoneshepherd-leavesno roomatallformeetingotherChristiansonsometerms, thatallmightbeone.

Itiswellthentogiveadistinctionwhichcouldmake thepositionoftheChurchclearertothosewhodiscuss thismatter,asallshould.

Thedistinctionthatmustbemadeisthatbetween whatisessentialteachingoftheChurchandwhatis accidental,orbetterstill,whatisChrist-institutedand whatispurelyChurch-instituted.

ChristgavetheChurchHisteaching,notigrthe Churchtodowhatitlikedwith,buttohandthat teachingontosucceedinggenerations.TheChurchis notthemasterofthedoctrineitreceivedfromChrist. Thisdoctrinewasreceivedasatotaldepositandmust behandeddownandpreserved(byChurch-instituted lawsifnecessary)intactsothatallmightreceivethe wordofGod.Fromthistheycanknow,inourtime, thatitisthesameasthatgivenbyChristbycomparing itwiththeoriginaldepositinSacredScriptureandthe earlyTraditionoftheChurch.

Thereisnoroomforconcessioninthismatterof actuallyChrist-givendoctrine,Nomatterwhathappens therecanbenochangebecausethepowertochange thisdoctrinewasnotgiventoHisChurchbyChrist.

That*hickhasbeentaughtasthetruthcannotbe changedtomorrowandtaughtasnotbeingtrueandno longerofobligationtobebelieved,Truthcannot change.Itisone,eternalandimmutable.

PerhapsthedoctrinaltruthoftheChurchcanbe betterpresentedinaccordancewiththelanguageof mankindtoday,expressedintermsfamiliartohis environmentsothatthetruthmaybebetterunderstood.

Thatisallthatcouldhappentoit.Themoreaccurate explanationofthedoctrinehandeddownbyChrist wouldcertainlyleadtoitswideracceptancesimply becausemensmind'sfundamentallyseekthetruth.

Itisonly,inthedoctrinalarea,whenthesetruths havebeenconfusedbywronginterpretationsthatmen havebecomeignorantoftheirtruemeaning.The interpretationgetsacceptedasthedoctrineandleaves neithertheChurchnortherecipientinahappystate ofmind.

Oneexampleofthiswhichcropsupsofrequentlyis thatpeoplewhoarenotCatholicsarenotvalidly marriedintheeyesoftheChurch.Thisisnotonly wrongbutridiculous.Yetthetheoryhasawide acceptanceandtakesalotofbreakingdown.Thereare manysuchexampleswhichbyaccuracyinexplanation woulddomuchtobreakdowntheprejudicesagainst whatisconsideredtobeCatholicteaching.

Theotherfield,ofthenon-essentialsoftheChurch, thatmassofChurchlegislation,discipline,formsof piety,liturgyandvarioustraditionalusages,bechanged ordoneawaywithifneedbe.

Oneessentialthinginallthis,however,isknowledge. Thereisnoworryaboutthetechnicaldiscussionwhich takesplaceontheauthorisedbasis.Thisisdonewith thepermissionofthelocalOrdinaryapd.onlyby trainedpersonnel.Wherediscussionsonreligiontake place,however,arenotalwayssoplanned.Thesocial club,theneighbouringvisit,atwork-thesearethe placeswherethedoctrinesoftheChurcharesooften putforthsowronglyandeven"explained"inaworse light.

AndhereitisthatknowledgeonthepartofCatholics canbeputforwardtocorrectmistakes.

Thisknowingorexplainingofwhatistruecanmake notonlyforagreaterunderstandingbutpavetheway forunity-inthenormaldailylivesofpeople.

WhenBantus(Negroes),Coloureds(peopleof mixedblood),Asiatics(mostlyIndians)and membersoftherulingwhiteracewerelivingnear oneanother,therichercouldhelpunderwritethe religiousneedsoftheirpoorerneighbours.But nowthegovernmentisintentonkeepingthese groupsseparate,theChurchmustfindothermeans ofsupportingschoolsandchurchesamongpeople fartoopoortopayforthemthemselves.

Someideaofthemagnitudeofthe,shiftsandlhe problemstheyentailcanbehadfromthemake-up ofSouthAfrica'spophlation-accordingtothe1959 census,therewereaboutthreemillionpeopleof entirelyEuropeanextraction.ninemillionBantus, oneandhalfmillionpeopleofmixedbloodand 450,000Asiatics.CatholicsMakeupabout,fiveper centofthetotalpopulation.

PresentordersoftheRepublic'sMinistryforBantu AdministrationandDevelopmentcallforcomplete resettlementofallColouredpeoplelivinginBantu urbanresidentialareasbytheendof1962.They mustbythattimebeintheirownareas.

ThenewfinancialburdensfortheChurchare piledontopofatoweringburdentheChurchhas beencarryingsince1959,whenthegovernment withdrewallfinancialsupportformissionschools. OfalmostsevenhundredCatholicmissionschools theninquestion,onlyfortycloseddowninthe firstyearaftergovernmentaidwastakenaway. MostofthemwerecasualtiesoftheGroupiUeas Act,whichforcedthediSplacementofAfrTEans fromareasforbiddenthem.

LIFEISMADEUPOFASERIESOFCHOICES, WHICHTESTCHARACTERTOITSFOUNDATIONS.

Thechoiceisnotalwaysbetweenthebestandthe worst,butbetweenthehighestandthesecondbest: betweenthatwhichgivesimmediatesatisfactionand thatwhichpostponesitforthesakeofcharacter. Everyman'slifeisformedlikeanicicle.Ifthedrops thatfalltobefrozenlaterareclean,theicicleitself willbepure;ifthedropsbearwithinthemselvesimperfectionsordirt,theiciclewillbefouled.Decisions ultimately,congealintocharacter,andthosewhoultimatelybecomefixedinmediocrityarethosewhohave chosenthesecondbest.

ThePsalmisttellsofhowquicklythepeopleofIsrael forgottheirblessingsandproducedwithinthemselves aleannessofsoul."Theybelievedthen,inHispromises, sangsongs,then,inHishonour.butsoontheyforgot whatHehaddone,andcouldnotwaituponHiswill. Theymustneedsgivewaytotheircravingsinthe wilderness,challengeGod'spowerinthedesert,until Hegrantedtheirwill,thensentthemawastingsickness toplaguethem."

ProsperityNotMarkOfBlessing

Thedissatisfaction,ordisgust,ordeteriorationoflife followedfromtheirelectionofthesecondbest.Itwas liketheirdesiretohaveakingandtobeliketheother nationsthatsurroundedthem,withallofthepompand splendourandtrappingsofmonarchy.Godwasreluc1tanttogivethemaking,inorderthattheymightknow thatHewastheirKingandtheirProtector.Finally theirimportuningsweregranted,andtheyweregiven aking,Theirsubsequenthistoryrevealedtheperilof thesecondbest.

Duringthelastcenturyitusedtobeassumed,particularlybyrichmen,thattheirprosperitywasamark oftheblessingandapprovalofGod.Itwasagreat errortobelievethatGod'sgoodnessistobemeasured bythedegreeinwhich'Hesatisfiesourcravings.It maybetheworstthingthatcanhappentoustosecure thefullsatisfactionoflustfulcravingandunhallowed ambitionoranunfavourablefriendshiponwhichwe havesetourhearts.Judasplottedandplannedand thoughtsuccesswassure,butwhenhesawhisSaviour condemnedforthirtypiecesofsilver,itburnthimas withthefiresofhell.Therichfoolbuiltbiggerand biggerbarns,butanightcamewhentheangelofdeath saidthathissoulwouldberequiredofhim,andhe foundthatthefullpurseandtheleansoulwerecommon companions.

Eachdaybringswithitatemptationtoadoptalower standardthantheDivine,andtodiminishlife'sdimensionsbymakingease,comfort,prosperityandearthly gloryitschiefgoal.Intheend,suchpersonsbecome prosperousbutpetrified,haveimportancebutnoinfluence,areglorifiedbuttheysanctifynoone.Thehappiest menarethosewhochoosethebodpleasingratherthan theself-pleasing,andwhorepeattheprayerofthe Garden-"NotasIwilt,butasThouwilt."

ChurchauthoritiesbycurrentpoptifdthinresettlementistheshiftofColouredcitizenstothenew housingareaofBontehetrwel,abouteightmiles fromtheheart-ofCapeTown.TheretheCape Towncitygovernmentplanstobuild5,000new houses.About1,500houseshavealreadygoneup. Churchesandschoolsmustbeprovidedforthenew township.

PeopleJustHareMintSotMewls

ArchbishopOwenMcCann,ofCapeTown,has appliedfortwochurchsitesinthetownship.But theincomeofthepeoplewhoaremovingtoBonteheuweldoesnotenablethemtomeettheexpenses ofbuildingchurches.Atleast£22,506willbe neededfromothersources.

Thegovernmenthassetasidethesesitesfor churches,butithasnotdonethesamefornonStateschools.TheArchbishopwillhavetonegotiateforschoolsites,tobepurchasedatconsiderableexpense.

Presentgovernmentpolicyisagainstgrantsfor newStateschoolssinceitisthoughtthatthe governmentcanprovideenoughschoolsforthe need.ThereforetheChurchMustfindthefundsto buyproperty.buildnewschools.payteachers' salaries,andmaintainthebuildings.

TwoprimaryschoolsareregardedasanirreducibleminimumfortheCatholicpopulationof Bonteheuwel.Theirinitialcostisestimatedat about£22,500. Inotherresettlementareasthearchdiocesehas builtthreenewchurcheswithinthepasttwoYears, atacostofabout£31,500.Catholicsofthearchdiocesehavegivenmorethan£18,000towardsthat expenseafteraspecialappealfromtheArchbishop.

Thearchdiocesehasalsospentabout£45,000in buildingschoolsfortheseareas.Mostofthismoney hasbeenborrowed,andmustbepaidbackwith interest.

Sothecommunistsapparentlydecidedthatit wouldbesmartertostop shortofcompletemilitary conquest.TheyalreadycontrolledenoughofLaosto haveapathandanopen backdoorintoCambodia andSouthernVietnam.They couldwaittotakeoverall ofLaos. IwasinVientianeon April25,1961,whenthe BritishForeignSecretary andRussianForeignMinister,asco-chairmenofthe 1954Genevaconference, jointlyissedacallfora cease-fireinLaos.Ithad takenweeksofnegotiating toreachagreementonthe wordingofthisannouncement.TheU.S.government andthecommunistsin PekingandHanoihadbeen keptinformedwhilethe termsofthejointmessage werebeingdebated.Onceit wasissued,Americanand Britishofficialsseemed"to expectacease-firetotake effectwithinadayortwo.

Butthecommunistsin Laosstalledforabouttwo weeks.Theydidnotagree toacease-firseuntilthey hadimprovedtheirmilitary position, Thatindicatedtowhat degreetheRussianswould orcouldcontrolthem.

Thedeclaredpolicyofthe U.S.anditsWesternallies istobringaboutaneutral coalitiongovernmentin Laos.AnAmericanofficial inVientianetalkedabout an"Austrian-typeneutrality,"whichseemedand seemshighlyimprobablein Laos. TheU.S.isnowreportedlyputtingdiplomaticand economicpressureonthe anti-communistsinLaosto acceptacoalitioninwhich theywouldturnoverthe ministriesofdefenceandthe interiortotheiropponents. Thatwouldmeanhanding overthearmyandthepolice tooutrightcommunistsorto doubtfulneutralists.Then therewouldnotbeeventhe semblanceof'abuilt-hisafeguardagainsteffectivecommunistcontrolofthecountry,

Anyfinalagreementona coalitionforLaoswould probablyprovideaninternationalcontrolcommission tosupervisethecarrying outoftheterms.

Theinternationalcommission,comprisingIndian, PolishandCanadianofficials,hasshownitselftobe oflittlepracticalvaluein Indo-China.Itisafacesavingdevicethatisslow, feebleandhamperedbyits veryconstitution.Thecommunistsdidnotallowitto havefreedomofmovement eventosuperviseobservanceofthecease-fire. TheU.S.governmentis apparentlyactingonsome sortofimplicitorexplicit pledgeoftheRussiansthat acoalitionregimeinLaos wouldbereallyneutral. Anyonewhohaswatched communistsoperatinginthe FarEastmustbeextremely doubtfulwhethertheRus. sianswouldfulfilsucha pledgeorcouldfulfiliteven iftheywantedto. Nowthecaptureofthe northcapitalwesternprovincial ofNamThabythe communistPathetLao showstheirresolvetodominatethesituationinLaos bymaximumuseoffo.roe wherevertheycansafely resorttoit.Withoutbother= ingtodenouncethetruce agreement,theylauncheda large-scaletroopandartilleryoperationtocapture NabThawhiletheceasefirewassupposedlystillin effect.

CommunisminLaosand elsewhereinSouth-East Asia'isnomerepoliticalissue.Thepersecutionof priestsandlayChristiansin communist-ruledareasof LaosandinNorthernVietnamproveswhetaregime dominatedbycommunists wouldmeanforreligion.

Anyonewhowouldclaim tohaveasimplesolution fortheproblemoflandlocked,weak,easy-going Laoswouldbepresumptuousindeed.Acoalition withcommunistsindominantpositions,however, wouldnotbearealsolution. Laotiansmayhavetoaccept itintheend,butanyWesterngovernmentthatwould haveapartinimposingit wouldbetakingtoomuch onitselfandwouldbesettingadangerousprecedent inAsia.

Alongthehotpavements, enroutetotheSpringShow inthesuburbofBallsbridge, ...manypeopletrekked,footsore.andhopeful,toattend theShow,oneofthetwobig Showsoftheyearrunby theRoyalDublinSocietytheotheristhefamousDublinHorseShoweachfirst weekofAugust-forthe benefitofagricultureand industryandtothedelight -ofchildrenwhocollectleafletsattradestands.

Youmightthinkthata busstrikewouldlessentrafficproblems,butitincreased them;motor-carsofallvintageswereonthestreets, someofthemtryingtopark atbus-stops,andsome driversavertingtheireyes frombus-stopsalongtheir journeysbecausetherewere pedestriansseekinglifts.

Manymotoristsarenot insuredtocarrypassengers, andthegooddeedthey mightdobypickingupa pedestrianmightbeundone byafatalcrash.

Thestrikesituationitself hadunusuallyserious undertones;sixmenhad beendismissedonthespot bythenationaltransport undertaking,theStatesponsoredC.LE.,forrefusingto single-deckertourbuses, No,arguingthattheyrequired conductors.

Theyhadinstructions fromtheirtradeunionnot

totakeoutsuchbuses,and thedisputehasbeengoing onforyears.Sofar,soclear; butinsteadofwaitingfor theiruniontoserveanominalseven-daysstrikenotice, Dublin'sbusmenwenton strikeovernight.Manyof themwerequitehostilenext dayastheymarchedto unionheadquartersanddemandedtheiruniontoback them.

Buttheunionsaidno;it gavesevendaysnoticeof strikeactionforareasoutsideDublin,andleftthe Dublinsituation,inwhich themenwereunoffie,aliyon strike,alone.

ThereareintheStatea numberofnormalchannels forsettlingdisputes;oneis theLabourCourt,which doesnotimposeasolution, buthearsbothsidesandrecommendsasolution.

Buttheserioussocial aspectwasthat3,000Dublin busmenwerenowadrift fromtheirunion,thepowerfulIrishTransportand GeneralWorkers'Union.

Intothepicttirecametwo Dublinpriests,championsof Catholicsocialprinciples, andtheyplayedamostusefulpartinfindingaformula bywhichtheunofficial strikerswouldgobackto workandtheunionwould dealwiththeirproblemin thenormalway,withguaranteesagainstvictimisationorlossofincome.

Aballotbytheunofficial strikersonthisformularesultedinanovernightreturntowork.Meantime, strikenoticesintheproper formwereinexistencefor therestofthecountry,and thesix-markquestionwas whethertheunionwould nowserveaweek'snotice forDublin,too,bringing passengersontotheirfeet againiftheoriginaldispute wasnotsettled.

Meantime,however,betweenthestartoftheDublinstrikeandthereturnto work,menhadbeensacked

intheprovincesforrefusing totakeoutconduetorless single-deckertourbuses.

Thefirm'sview:Thatin Britainandothercountries, andontourbuseswhich cometoIrelandfromBritain,thereisnoconductor, andthatC.I.E.mustbeable tocompeteequallywith theminsteadofhavingto paya"ghost"conductor whohasnoworktodo,accordingtothecompany.It guaranteednoonewould sufferfinancially.

AsIwrite,Dublinisjust backonbuses,afterits seven-daywalk,andgratefulforthegoodinfluences thatfoundthewaybackfor theunofficialstrikers,ata meetinginthehallofSt. Andrew'sCatholicChurch, WestlandRow.

Whatnow?Sevendays notice,intheofficialmanner,forDublin,tobringit intolinewiththerestofthe country?Thesamegoodinfluencesarestillatworkin oneofthemosttangled labodr-relationsproblemsof -recentyears,butonceagain theapplicationofCatholic socialprinciplesisexpected toprevail,

Thecourseofeventsin theunofficialstrikeisone moreindicationoftheclose andrealisticrelationshipbetweenDublinclergyand workers.Theconfidenceof bothtradeunionsandemployersinthosewhoteach Catholicsocialprinciplesis asteadyingfactorirlabour relations. .Thetwopriestswho playedinimportantpartin reunitingtheunionandthe strikerswereRev.J.Kavanagh,LecturerinEconomics atUniversityCollege,Dublin,aconstituentcollegeof theNationalUniversityof Ireland,andRev.E.J.Kent, S.J.,oftheCatholicWorkers'College.Both,withthe JointSecretaryoftheIrish CongressofTradeUnions (Mr.LeoCrawford),were calledintoseethesettlementformulavotedon. Thesethreesupervisedthe countingofthevotes,which favouredthereturntowork bytheunofficialstrikers and,therefore,areturnto normalunionchannels.

Thismonth'scanonisation ofBlessedMartinofLima hasbroughtSoythroughout Ireland.ManyIrishpeople wenttoRomefortheceremony,andinIrelandthere werespecialreligiousceremoniestomarktheevent.

Formanyyears,Blessed Martin-hasbeenahousehold nameinIrelandasthatof anyonealivetoday,from KhrushchevtoKennedy, fromDeValeratoTipperary horse-trainerVincent O'BrienwhowinseverythingfromGrandNationals clown,butnotyettheEpsom Derby,whichheisexpected towinwithSebring. Itis,indeed,thepresence ofthenameofBlessedMartinineveryhousehold,and adevotiontohiminevery village,thathasbrought himintoeverydaylife,into

Beverofpatticularlyrobusthealth,thesainthad severalclosecallswith deathinseriousillnesses.
