ISTHISTHEBESTAVAILABLE?
ThisGovernmentpolicy,goodasitlooks,seemsto takenoaccountofthewishesofthenativefolk,andis tobeimposeduponthem.Butisitthebestthingfor theAboriginestobecompelledtoadoptourwayof living?Isthereanythinglessthanthistotalassimilation(makingthemlikeus"innutrition,health,hygiene. schooling,vocationaltraining,employmentandremoval oflegalrestrictions"wasthestatement'soutline),is thereanythinglesswhichcouldsuitthenativesmore? (Religion,ofcourse,isnotmentioned,foritisnota Governmentconcern;nevertheless,theGovernment givesnotableassistancetoMissionwork.)
CHILDRENORWARDS?
Takingthenatives'faultsbroadly,itisevidentthat theyarecommontonumbersofwhites,andtherefore notdueexactlytothelackofassimilationassuch.It issaid,andwithmorereason,thattheAborigine4are children-thatis,inthewaysofcivilisation-and shouldbetreatedassuch;thisistheGovernment estimate,shownintherestrictingoftheirrights.Now, thereareenoughofthemforthepaternalGovernment tobereadyandanxioustoeducateandadvancethem; coulditnot,withitsresources,organiseaschemetodo thiswithoutdestroyingtheiridentity,theirnatural tribalrelations,theirowncustomsandculture,language andarts,theirwilltolivetheirownwaysolongasit doesnotinjurethecommonwelfare,andtoallowthem free,cordialandrespectabledealingswiththewhites, includingintermarriage,ifitisdesired?
ANALTERNATIVE?
Ofcourse,torearandeducatechildrenneedsskill andlotsofmoney;butwhentheyareeducated,they aretheparents'pride,andmaybetheymakesome returnfortheblessingsreceived. IntheU.S.A.,provisionwasmade(thoughbelatedly) fortheIndiansdislodgedfromtheprairiesbygrantsof landtothetribes.InNewZealand,largeareasofgood landarethepropertyoftheMaoritribes,whobenefit fromtheiruseorlease.We,thewhites,whotookrightlyorwrongly-nearlytwothousandmillionacres fromtheoldinhabitantshere,andnowtheirsuccessors donotownanacre!Whynotgivethemtractsofgood land,tobeadministeredintrustsothattheir"advancement,"includingreligionandmorality.couldbewell andsuitablysecured?Whatistheunemploymentdole ortheNativeAffairshand-outcomparedtothepersonal independence,therespectablesecurity,thebalanced anddevelopedexistence,andthefullwelfareofthese "humanbeings"andoftheirimmortalsouls,createdby GodandforGod?

DespiteallthedifficultiesinvolvedinusingSoviet statistics(whichareallcompiledbygovernment agencies),trustworthysourcesestimatethatthereare between35and50millionpractisingRussianOrthodox membersinthe'U.S.S.R.,some33,000priests,and5,000 menandwomenReligious.Therearethreeseminaries whichseemtobewellattended.
Inthe18thcentury,CzarPetertheGreatopenedthe doortotheWest,andsubsequentlymanyProtestant sectsestablishedthemselvesinsideRussia.TheseincludedBaptists,Evangelists,Mokikans,Dukhobors, Stundists,Menonitesandothers.Thesectsbecame verypopularandattractedaconsiderablenumberof followers.Thesegroupsstillremain.TheBaptists havelargechurchesinLeningradandMoscowand thousandsofmembers.
TheCatholicChurchhasbeenespeciallyhardhit, buthaschurchesopeninLeningradandMoscowwhich areattendedbylargecrowds,includingmanyforeign diplomatsanddiplomaticpersonnel.

Thereisnoonepolicythatthecommunistsattemptto enforceeverywhere.Therearetoomanydifferent situationsandtypesofpeopleintheSovietUniontoput alloftheminthesamemould.Thecommunistpartyis smarterthanthat.
Eveninaspecificarea,thepolicychangesradically fromtimetotime.Immediatelyaftertherevolution tookoverin1917therefollowedtryingdaysforall churchesinRussia.TheBolsheviks,whosenewlyfound powerhadnotbeentemperedbyexperience,closedall churches.Theydecidedtodoawaywithreligion quickly.Alltypesofserviceswereforbiddenanda newlyformedAssociationoftheGodlesswascreated totrackdownanddoawaywithallpriests.
Thiswastheperiodofmilitantatheismwhichlasted throughthe1930'stothebeginningofWorldWarII. Twenty-eightbishopsand1,200priestsandmonkswere executed.Countlessthousandswereshippedtolabour camps-otherswereimprisoned.

Lastweekconcludedthe migrantsectionofthenationalcampaignandthediscussionwascarriedout amongonlyfourleaders.It
washopedthatth3holidays weretoblameforthefalloffinusualattendance. Amongthepointsbrought upforgeneraldiscussion werethetwoleaders'teams abouttobegin.Sincemost ofthelikelymembershave beencontactedaboutasuitabletime,wearehopingto startthesub-groupswithin aweek. Theaimofthefestival wastogivetheboysan opportunityofhearingour WesternAustralianwriters andartistsspeak-ontheir ownwork.Thosespeaking includedMaryDurack, ElizabethDurack,Donald StuartandF.B.Vickers.
Inconjunctionwiththe festival,theboysarranged acomprehensivedisplayof Australians,rangingfrom novels,poetryandliterary
criticismtohistoryand naturestudy.Alberts'Bookshopandmanyparents loanedbooksandpaintings fortheoccasion. Ondisplayalsowasacollectionofpaintingsdoneby theboysandthesewere supplementedbyanexhibitionofAustralianartprints loanedbycourtesyofthe DirectoroftheW.A.Art Gallery. Thefestivalconcluded withaneveningofshort storiesandpoemswhich werewrittenbytheboys andreadbeforeanaudience whichincludedparents.

OnSaturdaynightthe parishionersofMorleyPark farewelledFatherDermot, O.D.C.,whoisreturningto Irelandforaholiday.
FatherDermotcameto MorleyParkwiththefirst DiscalcedCarmeliteFriar inWA.,FatherHilary;in January,1957,whenmost oftheparishwasbashand swamplandwithonlyafew housesandscatteredfarmletsinbetween.Theirdwellingforthefirstthreeyears wasadilapidatedoldcottage,whichbymuchingenuityandhardwork,was convertedintoacloisterand tinychapel.Fromthese modestbeginningsarosethe beautifulchurchandmonasterywhichnowgracethis rapidlygrowingdistrict.

TheCatholicSchools'DramaFestiva,sponsoredbytheTherry Society,whichfinishedlastSaturdayeveningbeforeanaudienceor about800peoplewasanevengreatersuccessthanlastyear'sinitial performance.Itsplaceintherunof"annualevents"mustbenow assured.Everynightofthefestivalwaspackedtocapacityandthe schoolchildrenactorswereassuredofgoodaudiences.
TheMinisterforEducation,Mr.E.H.M.Lewis, whosaidthathewasthrilledwiththewholeperformance,presentedtheprizes tothewinningschool, TrinityCollege,andtheindividualprizes.TheMinister praisedtheNunsand
Itisonlythoseparishionerswhoworkedwiththis bandofpioneerswhocan knowtherealdifficulties whichhadtobesurmounted beforeFatherHilary's dreamofapermanent churchandpriorycouldbecomeareality.Itwas FatherDermotwhodid muchofthe.earlyworkof extensivevisitation,which wasnecessarytoweldthis scatteredparishintoasolid entity.Asaresult,hisname hasbecomeabywordin countlesshomesinthe parish,sothathewaswelcomednotonlyasapriest, butasafriendwhereverhe went. FatherDermothadspent someyearsinBrisbanebeforecomingtoWA.,soitis alongtimesincehehasseen hisnativeIreland.Among hisluggageheistaking manyphotographsofthe newchurch,sothatFather Hilarycanhavethepleasure ofseeinghisworkfulfilled, forthebuildingwasnot completedwhenheleftin 1960.

Thqsaintloseshimself utterlyandcompletelyin God.Heknowsinstinctively thatself-interestandpersonalconsiderationarethe hindranceswhichblockhis pathtoGodsohehasno hesitationinofferinghimself upasacontinualvictim inexpiationforhisownsins andthesinsoftheworld.
Sufferingisfhefirewhich burnsawaythedrossand leavesthepuremetal.Sufferingistheagencyby whichChristworksmiracles ofgraceinsouls.
Itisnotmerelythephysicalsufferingswhichars terribleenough.Itistheaccufnulationofmentalanguish,desolation,misunderstandings,ridicule,hatred andvenomwhichsooften surroundsthelifeofasaint andMargaretMaryAlacoque'slifewasnoexception. Hershare,infact.wasappallinglyheavy.
Andyetitisnotthesufferingthatshouldoccupy ourminds.Thatwasameans toanendandtheendwas. andcontinuestobe,unbelievablyglorious.Unlessone understandsthispointthe livesofsaintsereincomprehensible.
Novelsaboutsaintsare notalwayssuccessful.An occasionalonesuchas FranzWerfel's"Songof Bernadette"forexample,is abrilliantachievement, MargaretTrouncerisnota secondWerfelbuthertreatmentofSt.MargaretMary Alacoquedeservesspecial credit:Itisobviouslysoundlybasedondeepresearch andwrittenwithsympathy withoutbeingmarredby sentimentality.
Areadingofthisfactual novelcanonlyresultina strongerappreciationofthe devotiontotheSacred Heart.

THEPROSPECTofhavingtowitness22ploys,allperformedby schoolchildren(200inall),inthespaceoffoursuccessivenights withonematinee(flunginforfullmeasureduringthefirsttwentyfourhours)wasanappallingone.Yet,inrealisation,itbecamea sheerdelightandonexhilaratingandupliftingexperience.
TheFestivalorganisers (AnneBurnettandG.D. Leahy)deserveoverwhelmingcongratulations-especiallyforthearrangementsof theplays,eachsession'sprogrammeincludingbotha splendidlyperformedplay andanexcellentselectionof playsofthought,prettiness orfarce.Theprintedprogrammewasinitselfafeat; andinallplaysbutonethe nameoftheauthorwasmentioned.Make-upandjightingwerewelldone.
Onepointonlyofcriticism-makethefestival eithercompletelynon-competitiveorelsecompletely competitive(eventothe productionofanactual mark-sheet!).Fourplays werechosenforrepetition onthefinalnight,andthe publicwereneverinformed whichoftheseproductions weresecondorthirdin merit.
Thesefourplaysweredefinitelythebest-produced andactedofthewholefestival,andyetonlyoneof themwasgivenanyaward orcertificateof.merit.These four,too,singlyoroneor moretogether,areworthy ofrepetitionanywhereon anysuitableoccasion(e.g. beingtakentocountry schoolsandtowns).
BestOfFour
"TheSeventhMan,"both duringtheweekandonthe finalnight,wasasdefinitely thebestofthesefourproductionsastheywerethe bestfour"of-thewholefestival.Theplay,bytheactor MichaelRedgrave,isanoutstandingexampleofapoor playwhichisyetsimply superbtheatre.Theproductioncaptured,byamagnificentset,splendidacting andobviousteamwork,all thetensenessandatmosphereoftheplay,leaving theaudience"purged throughfearandpity."
"TheFarceoftheDevil's Bridge,"donebyAquinas College,Mt.Henry,with verypleasantcolour schemes,absolutelyright arrangementofthestage andactors,andtip-topactingallround,gavetheaudiencelikewisesogoodaconveyanceoftheplaywright's intentionsthatonecould onlywishthattheghostof HenriGheoncouldhave beentheretowitnessit. Oneofthemostmemorable playsofthefestival,one wouldhavelikedtoseeits productionawardedsecond prize.

"ThePlay-Goers,"aplay withagreatsimilarityto ActIofBarrie's"Admirable Crichton,"wassowellproducedbyAnthonyHowes fortheMaristBrothers'College,Subiaco,thatitconveyedthewholeatmosphere ofthespacious,gracious daysoftheauthor,Pineso. Superblycostumed,with therapierthrust(or,when speakingofthe"lower orders,"thebroomstick sweep)ofeachandevery linescintillating(orswishing)acrossthefootlights, itsonlyseriousfaultwasa
lackoflightandshadein theportrayaloftheonly gratefuldomestic. "Coriolanus"wasbeautifullydressedandgavethe audiencetwogood"sets," onecomposedsolelyoftwo pillarsandaneagleandthe othercreatedbyabeautiful banneranditsbearer(better placed,stagecentre,onthe judgingnight)andtheblack cloaksofthewifeand motherofCoriolanus.The latterpart(PatienceGrave) withtheexcellentCoriolanus(Elizabeth'Palandri) madethecloseoftheseexcerptsa.verymovingexperience.Theintroductory music,TheRideoftheValkyries;istoowellknownto beusedoutsideasuitable context(e.g.Ibsen's"The Vikings").,(Thatanallfemalecastlooksratherlike vikingswheninRoman battle-dressisbesidethe point.)Thiswasaproductionwhichwelldeservedthe awardgivenforthebest student-producedplay.
Theremainingplays(one "stark"playexcepted)were eitherplaysofthoughtand socialcriticism,prettyplays (eitherinset,costumes,subject,slantorconclusion)or playsofgood,cleanfun.Of theplaysofthought(i.e. therevolutionbegunbyIbsenandShaw),themost successfulwas"Pawns"(by PercivalWilde),produced byPeterColeforC.B.C., Leederville.Itsstrongatmospherewasmainlydueto goodIntroductorymusic,a verybeautifulsetandfrogs whocroakedcontinuously. yetneversoloudastorenderthelinesinaudible.Indeed,oneforgottheirexistenceduringthemoretense moments.ThoughJohn Jasinski'sGrigorwasaline jobandPeterMcGinniss's Sergeantgood,theplaysufferedfromtheyouthfulness ofthecastandthefactthat onepartwasplayedata fewminutes'notice.Aproductiononewouldliketo seeagain,itovershadowed LouisEsson's"TheDrovers" (thegreatestAustralian one-actplay-"TheFireon theSnow"beingaradio play),donebyC.B.C., Highgate.Thoughin"The Drovers"thenoises-offwere effectiveandtheBoss(EdmundCaller)fairlygood, especiallyinhisfinalscene with"Briglow"Bill(Ludovit which,with itsrestraint,broughtalump tothethroatofatleastone memberoftheaudience,the setwaspoorlyorganised, beingtoolowdownonthe stagefloorandsomewhat unstable,andthecasttoo young(asin"Pawns"),at leastpsychologically,and theirclothestooclean.
The"Pretty"Plays
Ofthe"pretty"plays, "MineEnemy-MyFriend," doneby"Iona"Presentation Convent,andproducedby astudent,Elizabeth-Cook, wasthebestofthefirst night'splays.Itpossesseda veryfairsetandbeautiful costumes,allcreatingthe rightgeographicalandhistoricalatmosphere,except inthepartofEsther(Lyn O'Donoghue,whothough
shegaveaverymovingperformance,wasdresseda littletoomuchlikeDalkeith, 1962).Thoughthiswaspossiblythebestoftheplays ofthattype,R.H.Benson's NativityPlay,beingisa categoryofitsown,definitelydeserveditsspecial award.Theeffectofseeing asuccessionofbeautiful Christmascardswasachievedpartlythroughthework ofThreeMerchants(MariellaStifanich,KarenQuigleyandBeverleyCarwardine)andaChildandHer Brother(EvaGulyasand EmiliaFollinus),notto mentionMarilynSimonsas abeautifulMadonna. Oftheplays`let'shave funandnoholdsbarred," themostsuccessfulwas "TheLunatic-andOthers" (byJamesReilly),doneby St.Ildephonsus'College, NewNorcia,andproduced byDennisRichardson, whichwashandicappedbya poorsetandsomeinexperiencedactors.Inthisplay
thereweretwogoodlines, aboutapagebeforetheend, onwhicheithertheauthor ortheproducercouldhave loweredthecurtainwith improveddramaticeffect. Thqsaintloseshimself utterlyandcompletelyin God.Heknowsinstinctively thatself-interestandpersonalconsiderationarethe hindranceswhichblockhis pathtoGodsohehasno hesitationinofferinghimself upasacontinualvictim inexpiationforhisownsin, andthesinsoftheworld.
Sufferingisthefirewhich burnsawaythedrossand leavesthepuremetal.Sufferingistheagencyby whichChristworksmiracles ofgraceinsouls.
Itisnotmerelythephysicalsufferingswhichart terribleenough.Itistheacculnulationofmentalanguish,desolation,misunderstandings,ridicule,hatred andvenomwhichsooften surroundsthelifeofasaint andMargaretMaryAlacoque'slifewasnoexception. Hershare,infact,wasappallinglyheavy. Andyetitisnotthesufferingthatshouldoccupy ourminds.Thatwasameans toanendandtheendwas, andcontinuestobe,unbelievablyglorious.Unlessone understandsthispointthe livesofsaintsareincomprehensible.
Novelsaboutsaintsare notalwayssuccessful.An occasionalonesuchas FranzWerfel's"Songof Bernadette"forexample,is abrilliantachievement. MargaretTrouncerisnota secondWerfelbuthertreatmentofSt.MargaretMary Alacoquedeservesspecial credit:Itisobviouslysoundlybasedondeepresearch andwrittenwithsympathy' withoutbeingmarredby sentimentality. Areadingofthisfactual novelcanonlyresultin;a strongerappreciationofthe devotiontotheSacred Heart. -T.R.T.
THEPROSPECTofhavingtowitness22plays,allperformedby schoolchildren(200inall),inthespaceoffoursuccessivenights withonematinee(flunginforfullmeasureduringthefirsttwentyfourhours)wasanappallingone.Yet,inrealisation,itbecamea sheerdelightandanexhilaratingandupliftingexperience.
TheFestivalorganisers (AnneBurnettandG.D. Leahy)deserveoverwhelmingcongratulations-especiallyforthearrangementsof theplays,eachsession'sprogrammeincludingbotha splendidlyperformedplay andanexcellentselectionof playsofthought;prettiness orfarce.Theprintedprogrammewasinitselfafeat; andinallplaysbutonethe nameoftheauthorwasmentioned.Make-upandjightingwerewelldone.
Onepointonlyofcriticism-makethefestival eithercompletelynon-competitiveorelsecompletely competitive(eventothe productionofanactual mark-sheet!).Fourplays werechosenforrepetition onthefinalnight,andthe publicwereneverinformed whichoftheseproductions weresecondorthirdin merit.
Thesefourplaysweredefinitelythebest-produced andactedofthewholefestival,andyetonlyoneof themwasgivenanyaward orcertificateofmerit.These four,too,singlyoroneor moretogether,areworthy ofrepetitionanywhereon anysuitableoccasion(e.g. beingtakentocountry schoolsandtowns).

"TheSeventhMan,"both duringtheweekandonthe finalnight,wasasdefinitely thebestofthesefourproductionsastheywerethe bestfourofthewholefestival.Theplay,bytheactor MichaelRedgrave,isanoutstandingexampleofapoor playwhichisyetsimply superbtheatre.Theproductioncaptured,byamagnificentset,splendidacting andobviousteamwork,all thetensenessandatmosphereoftheplay,leaving theaudience"purged throughfearandpity."
"TheFarceoftheDevil's Bridge,"donebyAquinas College,Mt.Henry,with verypleasantcolour schemes,absolutelyright arrangementofthestage andactors,andtip-topactingallround,gavetheaudiencelikewisesogoodaconveyanceoftheplaywright's intentionsthatonecould onlywishthattheghostof HenriGheoncouldhave beentheretowitnessit. Oneofthemostmemorable playsofthefestival,one wouldhavelikedtoseeits productionawardedsecond prize.

"ThePlay-Goers,"aplay withagreatsimilarityto ActIofBarrie's"Admirable Crichton,"wassowellproducedbyAnthonyHowes fortheMaristBrothers'College,Subiaco,thatitconveyedthewholeatmosphere ofthespacious,gracious daysoftheauthor,Pineio. Superblycostumed,with therapierthrust(or,when speakingofthe"lower orders,"thebroomstick sweep)ofeachandevery linescintillating(orswishing)acrossthefootlights, itsonlyseriousfaultwasa
lackoflightandshadein theportrayaloftheonly gratefuldomestic. "Coriolanus"wasbeautifullydressedandgavethe audiencetwogood"sets," onecomposedsolelyoftwo pillarsandaneagleandthe othercreatedbyabeautiful banneranditsbearer(better placed,stagecentre,onthe judgingnight)andtheblack cloaksofthewifeand motherofCoriolanus.The latterpart(PatienceGrave) withtheexcellentCoriolanus(Elizabeth'Palandri) madethecloseoftheseexcerptsa.verymovingexperience.Theintroductory music,TheRideoftheValkyries;istoowellknownto beusedoutsideasuitable context(e.g.Ibsen's"The Vikings").,(Thatanallfemalecastlooksratherlike vikingswheninRoman battle-dressisbesidethe point.)Thiswasaproductionwhichwelldeservedthe awardgivenforthebest student-producedplay. Theremainingplays(one "stark"playexcepted)were eitherplaysofthoughtand socialcriticism,prettyplays (eitherinset,costumes,subject,slantorconclusion)or playsofgood,cleanfun.Of theplaysofthought(i.e. therevolutionbegunbyIbsenandShaw),themost successfulwas"Pawns"(by PercivalWilde),produced byPeterColeforC.B.C., Leederville.Itsstrongatmospherewasmainlydueto goodIntroductorymusic,a verybeautifulsetandfrogs whocroakedcontinuously, Yetneversoloudastorenderthelinesinaudible.Indeed,oneforgottheirexistenceduringthemoretense moments.ThoughJohn Jasinski'sGrigorwasafine jobandPeterMcGinniss's Sergeantgood,theplaysufferedfromtheyouthfulness ofthecastandthefactthat onepartwasplayedata fewminutes'notice.Aproductiononewouldliketo seeagain,itovershadowed LouisEsson's"TheDrovers" (thegreatestAustralian one-actplay-"TheFireon theSnow"beingaradio play),donebyC.B.C., Highgate.Thoughin"The Drovers"thenoises-offwere effectiveandtheBoss(EdmundCygler)fairlygood. especiallyinhisfinalscene with"Briglow"Bill(LudovieSchrandt)which,with itsrestraint,broughtalump tothethroatofatleastone memberoftheaudience,the setwaspoorlyorganised, beingtoolowdownonthe stagefloorandsomewhat unstable,andthecasttoo young(asin"Pawns"),at leastpsychologically,and theirclothestooclean.
The"Pretty"Plays
Ofthe"pretty"plays, "MineEnemy-MyFriend," doneby"Iona"Presentation Convent,andproducedby astudent,Elizabeth-Cook, wasthebestofthefirst night'splays.Itpossesseda veryfairsetandbeautiful costumes,allcreatingthe rightgeographicalandhistoricalatmosphere,except inthepartofEsther(Lyn O'Donoghue,whothough
shegaveaverymovingperformance,wasdresseda littletoomuchlikeDalkeith, 1962).Thoughthiswaspossiblythebestoftheplays ofthattype,R.H.Benson's NativityPlay,beingisa categoryofitsown,definitelydeserveditsspecial award.Theeffectofseeing asuccessionofbeautiful Christmascardswasachievedpartlythroughthework ofThreeMerchants(MariellaStifanich,KarenQuigleyandBeverleyCarwardine)andaChildandHer Brother(EvaGulyasand EmiliaFollinus),notto mentionMarilynSimonsas abeautifulMadonna. Oftheplays'let'shave funandnoholdsbarred," themostsuccessfulwas "TheLunatic---andOthers" (byJamesReilly),doneby St.Ildephonsus'College, NewNorcia,andproduced byDennisRichardson, whichwashandicappedbya poorsetandsomeinexperiencedactors.Inthisplay

Stanislauswentthrough ordinaryschoolandlatertc theuniversity,wherehe studiedphilosophy,arts, canonlawandtheology.At theendofsevenyearshe attainedhisMaster'sdegree, butitisreportedthat throughhumilityherefused toacceptit.
Boleslaswasfurious.He triedinvariouswaysto blackenthenameofthe saintlyBishop,b6tevery movefailed.Eventuallythe Bishophadtothreatenthe Kingwiththeseverecensureofexcommunication. TheKingrefusedtotake anynoticeandtheorder wasmadepublic.TheKing triedtoenterthecathedr' ofCracowbutfoundOW theBishophadsuspended theservices.
Inaragingfury,Boleslas soughtouttheBishopandj. foundhimsayingMassin theChapelofSt.Michael outsidethecity.Hesenthis soldiersintokilltheBishop.
