BISHOPFULTONJ.SHEEN DISCUSSES
SELF-EXPRESSION
Todaymanybelievethatself-expressionisalways right;theybelievethatalldiscipline,self-negation,mortificationandasceticismareequivalenttoafrustrationoftheegoandthedestructionofpersonality.
Themodernmindisnotpreparedtounderstand impediments.Advertisingmagnifies,asnecessities, comfortswhichourforefatherslookeduponasun- dreamed-ofluxuries.Theresultisthatmodernman, whenhefindshimselfupagainstopposition,blames others.Heisunfittedforstrugglethroughworshipof comfort,particularlywhenthatcomfortisbolsteredby technicalresourcefulness.Thediscipliningoftheselfwill,thetamingoftheego,thepruningofselfishness, thesacrificingofourwishes,aretodaylittleunderstood bythosewhoregardself-negationasfrustration,and self-expressionasanideal.
Onemustmakeadistinctionbetweenself-expression ofsomethingthatissimpleandself-expressionofsome- thingthatiscomplex.Self-expressionisrightwhena thingissimpleorcapableofproducingoneeffect.For example,abedbugisrightinbeingself-expressive;an acornisrightinbeingself-expressiveandbecomingan oak;poisonivyavoidsfrustrationbypoisoningthe humanhand;Butwhenwecometosomethingthatis complexoriscapableofproducingseveraleffects,then self-expressionisnotnecessarilyright.Forexample, isarazormoreself-expressivewhenitshavestheface orwhenitcutstheface?Isalocomotivemoreself- expressivewhenitstaysonthetrackorwhenitgets offthetrack?Isasoldiermoreself-expressivewhenhe staysathispostorwhenhedesertshisduty?
Itisevidentthatonecannotsaythatself-expression isalwaysrightwhenwearedealingwiththatwhichis complex.Nowmanhimselfiscomplex,beingcomposed ofbodyandsoul,matterandspirit.Manhashisfeet ontheground,buthealsohaswingsthatweremade fortheheavens.JustasamancannotserveGodand mammon,soneithercanonegivetotalself-expression toonewithout,insomeway,repressingtheother. Thereisneverarepressionofonething,inthatwhich iscomplex,withoutaself-expressionofanother.No onehaseveryetfoundaprizefighterwhodeveloped hisarttoperfectionwhowasatthesametimea specialistinmathematicalcalculus.Someathletesare goodstudents,butthosewhodevotethemselvestothe trainingofthebodygenerallyarenotconspicuous intellectually.
Everypersonintheworldhasjustsomuchenergy. Thatenergyiscapableofflowinginoneoftwo directions-towardsgoodortowardsevil.Ifaperson hastenunitsofenergy,andappliesitinthedirection ofgoodness,heisgoodindeed.Butifhebecameevil, heiscapableofproducingtenunitsofevil, Self-expressionisrightwhenitisdirectedtothe highestpurposeofabeing;itiswrongwhenitperverts thatpurposeordestroysthedueorderofthings.Selfexpressionisrightasregardsthebodywhenitis developedinthewayofhealth;themind,whenit pursuestruth;thewillwhenitseeksgoodness;the wholepersonality,whenitseeksGod.Butselfexpressioniswrongwhenthebodyisgivenoverto excesses,themindtoerror,andthewilltohate.

Q.:TheRomanChurchis anauthoritarianinstitution.
R.:Understoodinitsright sense,thatisundoubtedly true.ForChristianityitself isanauthoritarianreligion. TheGospelsthemselves showthatChristspokeas onehavingauthority."You havehearditsaid,"Hetold thepeople,"butIsayunto you."AProtestantmaysay: "Oh,Iadmittheauthorityof ChristasourDivineTeacher.I'mnottalkingabout that,butabouttheauthorityyourChurchclaimsas an institution." The troublewiththat.however, isthatthesameGospels tellusthatChristinstitutedaChurchwhichHe entrustedwithHisownauthority,saying:"Hewho hearsyou,hearsMe,"and "Whatsoeveryoubindon earthshallbeboundalsoin heaven."Consequently:"If amanwillnothearthe Church,lethimbeasthe heathen."Torejectallthat istorejecttheauthorityof Christ.

MostProtestantswould agreewithCatholicsin acceptingtheteachingofSt. Paul,inEph.2:8.that"by graceyouaresaved throughfaith,andthatnot ofyourselves,foritisthe giftofGod."Whilst,however,faithcanstemonly fromthegraceofGod,it presupposesavoluntary, personaldecisiontocorrespondwiththatgrace.But hereagain,theProtestant positiondoesnotdifferfrom theCatholicposition.For theCatholicChurchisever warningitsmembersthat, althoughtheirfaithisthe giftofGod,iteverremains amatterofvoluntarychoice whethertheywillbetrue toitornot.WhereProtestantsdifferfromCatholicsisnotoverthebelief thatgenuinefaithmustbe avoluntary,personaldecision,butsimplyinthefact thatwhereasCatholics choosetobelieveintheCatholicreligion,Protestants donot,preferringtopin theirfaithtootherversions ofChristianity.Thereal problemtobedecidedis whetherthechoiceofthe Catholicofthechoiceofthe Protestantistherightone, inthelightofScripture,historyandreason.Andthat, ofcourse,woulddivertthe discussiontoanotherfield altogether.
