TRIBUTETOTHEBROTHERS

Amovingtributewaspaidtothe ChristianBrothersbyHisGracethe Archbishopwhenhespokeattheofficial openingofTrinityCollege.HisGrace hadalreadyblessedthecollegeinaprivateceremonyatthebeginningofthe schoolyear.Thechapelwasblessed publiclyonFebruary11.

HisGracesaid: am pleasedindeedtohavethis opportunityofconveyingto theChristianBrothersmy sentimentsoffelicitationon theacquisitionofthisadmirablebuilding.Thereare few,ifany,inthecommunitywhowillnotagreethat theChristianBrothersmade therightdecisionwhenthey decidedtomovetothisex. cellentsite.Thatdecision willbecomemoreandmore vindicatedwiththepassing oftheyears."

"TheChristianBrothers bringwiththemtothisnew TrinityCollegetherich65. year-oldtraditionsoftheold CollegeintheTerraceand theybringwiththem,too, thesinceregoodwishesof allassociatedwiththeold College.

NEIGHBOURING INDONESIA

Throughthenewschannelsthepublicisbeing graduallyconditionedforadmittingthatIndonesia shouldhavecontrolofWestNewGuinea.Itwaslong evidentthatneither"Anzus"nor"Seato'couldwithstandthisclaimwithouttheUnitedStatespower;and that,perhapsrememberingherowncolonial,days,the Americanattitudeagainitcoloniesgavenohopeof savingthisone.Herhopeandplanisforthestrongest possiblelineofdefenceandfriendshipfromMalaya toJapan,andincludingNewGuinea,betweenthe PacificandtheCommunistcountries,excludingthem fromtheIndianOceanaswell.IfLaos,Vietnamand Thailandgo,weshallneedthis,too,fortheIndonesian territorywillbethelastbarriertoprotectAustralia fromtheNorth.

Anadjustmentofouroutlookandfocuswillgiveus greaterconcernandgreaterdesireforfriendlinessfor ournearneighbours-attheirnearestpointtheyare only400milesfromDarwin,and2,000milesdirect northfromPerth,.Ourexistenceasaseparateand Christiannationmaythereforebeverytightlybound upwithIndonesia'sfuture.

ThePriceOfFriendship

MaybetheIndonesians'allianceandfriendshipisfor thehighestbidder,forthecountryseemsbankrupt, andisveryunderdeveloped.Sowehopethatthe Americandollarwillproveofsterlingvalueandbe adequatelyavailable;toitweourselvesaddalittleby oursharebftheColomboPlan.Thismethodofhelping themtohelptheniselvesisafirst-rateinternational socialduty,tdwhichPopeJohnreferred,withpraise, inhisEncyclicaloflastMay,"MateretMagistra."

Butwecanoffersomethingmorevaluablestill.Of the88millionpeopleinthese600,000squaremilesof islandslyingoffournorthernshores,lessthanone millionareCatholics.VerymanyareMahommedans, andmultitudesstillhaveonlysomesortofnatural religionandworship.The87millionareforeigntothe Faith,andcouldbeanobleandfruitfulmissionary objectivetous,theirnext-doorneighbours.

TheChurchAtPresent DutchCatholicmissionarieshaveworkedsuccessfully amongthem.Twenty-fiveVicarsandPrefectsApostolic, mostlyreligious,nowruletheChurchthere,withthe helpofnearly1,000priests;670oftheseareDutch, someofwhomhavebecomenaturalisedIndonesiansin ordertomaintaintheirmissions;thenativeclergy amountto170.ThreethousandSistersandBrothers (perhapsafewfromAustraliaamongthem)engage intheessentialtaskofeducation,for80percentofthe populationisilliterate;attheirlastelections,millions hadtohaveSignstoindicatecandidatesandparties, insteadofnamestheycouldnotread,andvoteswere givenbypunchingaholeoppositethesigns!Church numbersaregrowingattherateof70,000baptismsa year;andanApostolicInternuncioiskeptatDjakarta bytheHolySee,whilstIndonesiamaintainsaMinister PlenipotentiaryattheVatican.

WhatOfTheFuture?

Itisnowimpossibleforsomemissionaries,for exampletheDutch,togetintotheseStates;theIndonesianshavetheirrestrictionsjustaswehave.But,no doubt,onaccountofoursubstantialaidtotheirstudents andsuchColomboPlanbenefits,theywouldnotban theAustralians.WhatistheprospectfortheChurch, then?Itseemsthatitsfuturedependsuponthenative clergyandthehelptheycanreceivefromoutside.This isAustralia'sopportunityformissions,atourvery frontdoor.AlreadysomeseminariesaretrainingIndonesianstudents,andsurelythecallwillcometosome ofourstoaidtheconquestofthesemillionsofsouls forChrist,whichSt.FrancisXavierlongedtobeginin his'lifetime!SistersandBrothers,too,haveawide dooropentothemintothisfieldofapostolicharvest, sonearby.AndbecausetheirfutureChurchis'linked withourfutureChurch,itiscertainlyamatterforour charitableprayerstotheAlmightythatthelightofthe Gospelshineclearlyandbrightlyforthem.

DearlyBelovedBrethreninChrist,

Oneofthechiefdutiesofthebishopof everydioceseistoteachthetruthgivenby ChristtoHisChurch."WhatIwasbornfor, whatIcameintotheworldfor,istobearwitness ofthetruth.Whoeverbelongstothetruth,listens tomyvoice"(John18,37)."Hewholistenstoyou, listenstome"(Luke10,16)."Youmustgoout, makingdisciplesofallnations teachingthem toobserveallthecommandmentswhichIhave givenyou"(Matthew28,19-20).

Deeplyconsciousofthisobligationassuccessors oftheapostlesintheirdivinecommission,weare mostanxiousthatallthosetowhomweentrustthe taskofteachinginourdioceses-priests,religious, laycatechists,parents-shouldbeadequatelyprepared:thattheyshouldbeholy,thattheyshould clearlyknowandappreciatewhattheyareto teachtoothersandthattheyshouldbeequipped to,impartthisknowledge.

Weareawarethattextbookscanbevaluable toolsforbothteachersandpupils.Therefore,we havebeenplanningforanumberofyearsto improvethestandardofourCatechismsandto designthemriotonlytogivetochildrenandothers thefactualtruthsofGod'srevelationtomanbut alsotoinspirethemwiththeloveofGodandwith zealtoextendHisKingdomonearth.

WenowannouncethatBookIofourCatholic CatechismforseniorprimarygradesofCatholic SchoolswillbeofficiallyissuedinSeptemberthis yearandisprescribedforuseinalldiocesesfrom thebeginningoftheschoolyearof1963..The publisheranddistributorwillbeE.J.Dwyerof Sydney. ThenewCatechismwilldifferinapproachfrom thetextsthathavebeeningeneraluse.

Everyoneknowshis"ScrewtapeLetters"whichisa presumedcorrespondencebetweenanolddevilinhell calledScrewtapeandhisyoungnephewdevilonearth calledWormwood.-Atremendousspirituallessonin reverseisgiveninallthetricksofScrewtapetogain masteryoverminds.Lateron,Lewisfolloweditup withasuperbpieceofsatiricalwritinginanimaginativegraduatingbanquetinhelloftheTemptersTrainingCollege.Theprincipal,Dr.Slubgob,proposesa toasttothenewlytraineddevils.Screwtape,avery experienceddevil,risestoreply.

"FewAdmitBeingTempted"

Itisnotverycomplimentarytothehumanlot,but itdoespointupthetruththatfewpeopletodayever admitbeingtempted;theyarejustsolicited,attracted, orappealedtothroughrepetitionandtheyrespond. Thegreatmoralstrugglesbetweenrightandwrongare few,ineitherofthethreezonesoftemptation-the mind,whereegotism,pride,jealousyreignwhenthe urgetoself-perfectionisperverted;thebody,where lust,alcoholismandgluttonyerecttheirempire,when moderationisspurned;thingsoutsidebodyandmind, wheregreed,dishonesty,thieveryholdswayforthe sakeofthedollaratthecostofmoralintegrity.

Itissheernonsensetosaythatthebadpeoplehave temptationsandthegoodpeoplehavenone.Theway weknowpeoplearegoodisbecausetheyrejecttemptationtoevilandthewayweknowpeoplearebadis becausetheygivewaytotemptation.Sensitivenessto temptationincreaseswithmoraldevelopment.Hewho speaksgoodEnglishismoreshockedbybadgrammar thantheonewhosemouthuttersnaughtbutfractured syntax.Thetemptationwhichmakesonecharacter noblebynon-consent,makesanotherignoblebyconsenting.Fireisgoodwhencontrolledinastove,but badwhenuncontrolledinaroof.Justasdirtismatter inthewrongplace,soimpurityissexinthewrong place. Sometimessoulsthinktheyhavegivenuptheir passionswhentheirpassionsgivethemup.Theymay notbetemptedinonedirection,buttheirevilliesin another.Themajortemptationofyouthisimmorality; themajortemptationofmiddleageispower;themajor temptationofoldageisgreed,hoardingandavarice. Oftenavariceinwrinklesisnothingbutthesublimation oflustinyouth. C.S.Lewisreallyhasputintoanexcellentbitof satiricalwritingthefallacythatself-expressionof everyimpulseisalwaysright.Whatisforgottenis thereneverisself-expressionwithrepresssion.Hewho repressestheimpulsetosteal,expressesthevirtueof honesty.Hewhorepressestheimpulsetoviolate anotherperson,expressestheidealofpurity.Selfpossessionwhichisbornofaresolutionnottobe enslavedtowhatisbase,isreallythesecretofhappiness.Maybeafterall,wearemakingittooeasyforold Screwtape.

Ihaveseenthebig cities,thetowns,the smallvillagesfrom theBayofFinlandin thenorthtotheCaspianSeaandtheborderofTurkeytothe south;fromthewesternborderalmostto theUrals.Ihavetalkeiwithmany,many Russiancitizens.

Mostofthemwere ordinarypeopleworkers,farmers,students,soldiers.Isaw nobigpartyofficials norwasabletotalk toanyfamousscientists.

IHADSOMEDIFFICULTIESGETTINGAROUND. BUTNOTANYWHERENEARTHENUMBERIHAD ANTICIPATED.ANDIGOTTOKNOWMUCHMORE OFTHECOUNTRYTHANIHADHOPEDTOAT THETIMEIDECIDEDTOSEEFORMYSELFTHIS PHENOMENONOFCOMMUNISM.

ItisverydifficulttocracktheIronCurtain.Idon't meanthismerelyintheliteralsenseofgettingyourself withinthegeographicallimitsoftheSovietUnion. Evenafteryouachievethis,thereisanothercurtain evenhardertocrackwhichsurroundsalmosteveryone towhomyoutrytotalk.

THEYAREACURIOUSPEOPLE

Ingeneral,thepeopleyouseeandtalktoarelike peopleeverywhere-they'renice.TheRussianshave reallyexceptionalqualitiestorecommendthem.They arecourteous,hospitableandgeneroustoafault.They arecurious.TheywanttoknowthingsabouttheWest thataredeniedthem.

Theyare,however,furiouslypatrioticandsuspicious oftheWesternertelltheWest.Thesearenotattitudes thatwecantracetotheinfluenceofcommunistpropaganda.Russianslovedtheirhomelandandsuspected theWesternerevenduringthetimeoftheczars.For thisreason,youdonotlifttheIronCurtainjustby gettingbytheborderpolice.Yourunintoitanew almosteverytimeyouapproachaRussianandstart askingquestionsabouthiscountry.

Whatyoumeetisnotopen,honestdisposition,ready totellyoujusthowthingsareintheU.S.S.R.Instead youmeetanimmediatesuspicion,asuspicionthat perhapsyoudonotlikeRussia,orthatyouwantto ridiculeRussia.Thisiscoupledwithreticenceto criticiseormakeknownanyfaults.Itisatypeof patrioticinferioritycomplex.Itisnotsomethingone findsonlyinthededicatedcommunist.ThisisaRussian phenomenonthatcrossesoverpoliticallinesandlinks togetherboththosewhofavourandthosewhooppose communism.

Thecommunistshaveintensifiedthisfeelingtothe pointthatitisverydifficult,nomatterhowfaryou travelorhowlongyoustay,tofindoutwhatthe Russianisreallythinking,todiscoverhisattitudesto internalpoliticsortolifeingeneral.Ifhetellsyou anything,itwillbe,withveryrareexceptions,the

partyline.ThereisalittleIronCurtainthatsurrounds everyRussian,anditsoriginsaredeepinhishistory andculture.

WE

GIVETHEM"AMMUNITION"

EveryRussiancommunistwhocomesintoconstant contactwithWesternersthroughhisjobmustbepre- paredwithathoroughgoingindoctrination,asortof ideologicalvaccination.Heorshemustbestrong enoughtoresistthedetructive,disease-ladencapitalisticideasand,evenmoreimportant,mustbeableto dispensesomeofthesweetbalmofcommunistideology. Thesepeople,unusuallywelltrained,respondquickly toeventheslightestsuggestionofcriticismofRussia. Andtheyhaveonhandanicesupplyofartillerywith whichtofightback(forexample,regardingAmerica, statisticsoncrime,juveniledelinquency,unemployment.segregation,lynchings.).

Anyattempttorefutetheseexaggerationsisuseless. Thestrongest,mostlogicalargumentintheworldwill bemetwithsomethinglike:"Butweknow,weare culturedpeople,andweunderstandthesethings.You justdonotunderstand."Paradoxically,however,an argument,areallystrongexchangeofaccusations. whichinsomecountriesmightverywellleadtoagood old-fashionedfistfight,ismostlikelytobefollowed inRussiabyatorrentofcordiality,smiles,embraces, exchangesofkindnesses,andnumeroustoasts(allat theRussian'sexpense)toRussia,totheAmerican people,andtopeace!

Irememberespeciallyonesuchexperiencethattook placeonaplanerrideandinvolvedmyselfandaRussian armyofficer.Theyareusuallytheleastaffableofthe Russians,themostsuspiciousandthehardesttoget totalkto.Thisfellowwasdifferent.

Hewasabout27yearsoldandlookedverymuchlike theSovietUrtion'snotionalhero,spacemanYuri Gagarin.HeiwasthrilledwhenImentionedthelikenessandveryproudlytoldmethatheknewGagarin personally.Theyhadstudiedtogetheratthemiltary academy.Thelieutenanthadrecedingblondhairand around,pleasantface.Hesmiledveryeasilyandhad. ingeneral,thatfriendlylookthatwouldencourage strangerstoengagehiminconversation.

ACONTRASTINSYSTEMS

Hewasdressedinhisuniformandwasveryproud ofit.Heworethecustomarybluetrousers,wideatthe bottom,andtherewasevidentaslightvestigeofa crease,whichisarareexceptioninRussia.Hisbrown khakishirtwasalmostform-fitting.Theplanewas likeanoven,andonlyafterrepeatedsuggestionswould heevenasmuchasloosenhisbrowntie.Irememberit wasmadelikethetiesweworeingradeschool,with theknotalreadymadeandclippedonby.apieceof elasticthatstretchedaroundtheinsideofthecollar.

IwasreadingaGermantextbookandheimmediately startedcommentingonsomeofthepicturesinhisbest German,andwewereofftoalongdiscussion.His friendlyfacewassoreassuringthatIaskedhimabout thoseaspectsofcommunismthatIwouldneverhave mentionedtosomeofhisburly,serious,disagreeablelookingcolleagues.IenquiredaboutaboutStalin's purges,themassmurdersthatevenPremierNikita Khrushchevhasattestedto,theterriblelimitationsof freedom,thethoughtcontrolandconstantpropaganda.

AtonepointIwascontrastingallthiswithour system-contrastingStalin,aself-confessedmassmurderer,withourPresident,whoisakind,religious man.Thisprovedalittletoomuchforhimtotake.

Ihadpresumedtoomuchonthefriendlyfaceofmy seatcompanion.Hisalreadyredfacebecameflushed, andheshowedrealanger.

Hehadnotbeenaverycompetentapologist.The onlyexplanationforallthatIhadpreviouslyobjected toandcriticisedwasthatinRussiaeverythingwasfine andgood.

FatherJamesF.Drone, theauthorofthefollowingarticle,now ateacheratSt.John'sHomeMissions Seminary,LittleRock,America,spent threeyearsstudyinginEuropeand recentlycompletedafour-weektourof theSovietUnionasamemberofaleftist politicalgroup.Thisgavehimfreedom inRussianotordinarilyaccordedto Westernvisitors.

"Everythinghereisdoneforthegoodofthepeople,' hesaid."EverythinginAmericaisbad.Allisforwar. Thecapitalistslivewellandthepeopleallsuffer."

Heinsistedonapicturetakenofusboth-arm-in-am andfullofsmiles.Wepartedlikeacoupleofold schoolmatesafterexchangingaddressesandpromises towrite.

THEPARTYLINEABOVEALL

Wecouldsaythatthisyoungcommunistofficer's attitudewastypical.Typicalwashisvoicingofthe partyline,neverhisownfeelings,onquestionsof internalorexternalpolicy;hisassurancethatallis wellinRussia;hishesitancytomakeeventheslightest ofcriticismortoadmittothesmallestpossibledefect.

HisextremeandviolentreactiontoKennedywas typical,too,butonlyofacertaingroup-thezealous partymemberswhogetextraindoctrinationsandmust provetheirloveanddevotiontothepartyaswellas theirhateanddedicationtothedestructionofcapitalismandcapitalists.Hisattitudewasthatofanypious, zealousyoungcommunist.

Hisotherqualitiesandpersonalitytraitsweretypical ofhisrace.Hisfriendliness,hiscuriosity,hishospitality,hispatriotism,hisgenerositywereallvirtues sharedbyRussianswhoarepartymembersandthose whoarenot.Icouldneverhavegotfromhimeven theslightestcriticismofhisfatherland,noranycommentonhispersonaldissatisfactionorfears.Forthe foreignerhe/hadjustonestatement:"InRussiaeverythingisfine(Thegovernmentisworkingforthegood ofthepeopleandforpeace."

Iwonderhowlongitwouldhavetakenmetoget throughhispersonallittleIronCurtainsoIcouldhave seentherealhim.

Arrangementsforthe YouthWeekinMayarebeingfinalisedandseveral peoplearetobeapproached andaskedtospeakonsome oftheevenings. caughtsmokinginarowing boatonthefarsideofPerth water-hehadforgotten abouttheBrotherwhose hobbywasastronomy-and telescopes!

Onesiteafteranotherwas examinedandrejectedand finally1938sawtheestablishmentatMt.Henryon thebanksoftheCanningtheembodimentof20years ofhopesandplans.

Ontheopeningdayall wasrejoicina-butnotfor oldC.B.C.,whorealised, perhapsforthefirsttime, thatthedaysofherglory werepassingaway.When schoolreopenedin1938,she foundherselfstrippedof halfherstudents,theroof leaked,thepaintwasfaded andblistering,thefloorsin disrepair,whilethelong emptydormitoriesre-echoed strangelytothesoundspass. ingalongtheTerrace.

Astheyearsoftheearly fortiespassed,too,itbecame increasinglyobviousthat .thedayswhen"Christians" hadeffortlesslyheldunchallengedprideofplaceinthe CatholicEducationsystem weregonealso.

NotonlywasAquinasher rival,buttherewerestrong challengesfromotherquarters-Highgate,Leedervillc andthenewSt.Louis.The schoolhadneverhadmuch ofalocalpopulation,except perhapstheoldfamiliesin AdelaideTerrace-butnow eventheseweregoneand thenewschoolswerecuttingoffthesuburbsone afteranother.

By1942itwasbeing suggestedthattheoldplace becloseddownandsoldto theGovernment,which wanteditforofficesites. ThenewHeadmaster, BrotherP.L.Duffy,now AssistantSuperiorGeneral oftheChristianBrothers, wouldnothearofsucha surrender."Theoldspiritis stillthere,"hesaid."This willbeagreatdayschool."

Asiftoemphasisehis words,upwentthescaffoldingandpaintersswarmed overoldMr.Kavanagh's parapets.Themenofold hadbuiltstrongly-structu-

rallyshewasassoundasa bell.Newfloorswentdown, partitionswentupintheold dorms,newwindowsletin morelight,newdesksarrivedwithanewgeneration offacestofillthem.1944 sawthefirstLeavingCertificateExhibitionssincethe goodolddays,andBrothers andboysrememberedasayingofBrotherNunan:"A greatSchooliswhatyou makeit."

By1954C.B.C.wasonce againthelargestIndependentSchoolinW.A.witha roll-callapproachingthe800 mark.Theproblemwasnow nottofindpupils-buthow tokeepthemout!Before leavingforIreland,Brother Duffyvisitedtheoldschool onceagain.Asheaddressed theassembly,hemusthave smiledtohimselfatthose whohadtoldhim-"Theold placemustclose."

WelearnfromPriorGarrido,AttorneytoBishop Salvado,theninRome,that Mr.(afterwardsSir)George Shenton,thcMission's agentoffered£500and thatthispricewasgood enoughforadwelling,a preytowhiteante.Asa matteroffact,Crampton hadleftitbecauseofthe whiteants.Thiswasin

moreprudentlyperhaps, toldShentonthathewanted itasapoundfortheMissionbullockswhenthey camedowntoPerth.

Atthistime,thetwoDe LaSalleBrotherswereconductingtwoschools,oneat PerthandoneatFremantle. Thisquestionisnottomy purposehere.Sufficeitto saythattheBrotherswere dissatisfiedwiththeschool appointments.Thecountry moreoverwasnotsuitedto theirideas,asIlearnfrom lettersofCanonMartello, thenstationedinFremantle, inalettertoBishopSalvado.

PriorGarridoconsented toDr.Griver'snamebeing insertedinthedeedsand threemonthslater,on MarcH20,1866,BishopSalvadorepliedapprovinghis prior'saction:". Asfar asIamconcerned,andin orderthatMr.Welland's housemightremainforthe useofthePerthDiocese, pleaseinsertDr.Griver's nameinsteadofmine.However,totellthetruth,I

don'tlikethesitefora CatholicSchool-particularlyabigone ."

ToStartAgain

TheBrotherSuperiorof theDeLaSalleBrothers keptschoolintheoldbuilding,butleftpermanentlyin Jhne,1866,andhisBrothers' didnotreturnuntil1952almostacenturylater.The transferoftheproperty fromNewNoc,ciaintodiocesanhandsdidnotafterall securetheBrothers'permanenceinthecolony,aswe havesaid.Thesiteremained Churchpropertyuntil1893, whenthetitledeedspassed fromDr.GibneytotheIrish ChristianBrothers'for £1,000.

BishopGibney,with characteristicgenerosity,returnedthepurchaseprice ashisdonationtothepresentWestwingwhichwas constructedinthefollowing year.

1864.BishopSalvadohad toldShentontosticktothat priceshouldtherebeno higherbidderastheproperty"wouldatsomefuture timebeofvaluetothePerth diocese."

Themainsupportersof thepurchaseonbehalfof thedioceseweretheApostolicAdministrator,Dr. Griver,hisVicarGeneral, FatherGibney,theSisters ofMercyandMessrs.BernardandMichaelSmith.By January,1866,thehouse wassoldtoBishopSalvado-hegotitfor£550.

Therenowremainedthe deedofsaletobeconsidered.OnGarrido'sadvice, itwasleftablankdeed,the namebeingomitteduntil PriorGarridowantedthe buildingasaCollegeforthe twoDcLaSalleBrothers whomhehadbroughtfrom Malaya.Theyhadthreatenedtoleavethecolonyunless provisionwasmadesoonfor theircommunitylife.This inducedGarridotoadvise ShentononJanuary11,1866, towritedownGriver'sinsteadofSalvado'sname.

FirstOfItsKind

Thediocesanauthorities madenosecretofthefact thattheywantedthesite foraCatholicCollege,the firstofitskindinthp colony.ButPriorGarrido.

Thisisonlythesecond timethattheChristian BrothersinAustraliahave beenabletodesignand carryouttheerectionofa school"intoto,"repletewith everymodernteachingrequirement.Theonlyother casewasSt.Edmund'sCollegeinCanberra,whichwas erectedin1951atacostof £200,000.

THECHAPEL

Thecentralfeatureofthe newCollegeistheChapel designedtoholdthreehundredandfiftyboysaswelt astheBrothersoftheCommunity.Itisacircular buildingwiththealtarin thecentre.Thecongregation kneelsbefore,andonboth sidesofthesanctuary,but notbehindit.

Theobjectofacircular chapelistogiveeverypersoninthecongregationan uninterruptedviewofthe priestatthealtar,thusthe bettertoenablealltoparticipateinofferingthe DivineSacrifice.Thecentral positionoftheChapelmakes itconvenientforeveryboy tovisithisDivineMaster

Massisoffereddailyinthe ChapelfortheCommunity bytheresidentchaplain.

GIBNEYHALL

TheGreatHallofthe College,whichisdedicated tothememoryofthelate BishopMatthewGibney,is alargebuildingoccupying theequivalentoftwofloors ofclassroomsatthefirst floorlevel.Thebarrelled ceilingissheathedwith copperwhiletheinterior finishisinsalmonbrickrelievedbywhiteacoustic

panels.TheHallwillseat sixhundredwithanother onehundredandfiftyinthe gallery.Itisintendedasa

AtthisstagetheCity Councilmadeaconcrete offertotakeovertheSchool propertyanderectanew Schoolofequalfloorspace onthesiteof25acresin FloreatPark.Asthiswould havemeantthathalfthe boysthenattendingtheCollegewouldhavetogoelse. where,i.e.toanearbyHigh School,theBrotherProvin. cial,Rev.BrotherT.B. Garveydeclaredthepro. posaltobe unacceptable. TheCouncilthencameup withanalternativeproposal,asiteof141acresof reclaimedlandattheeasternendofthecity,nearthe Causeway.Thenewsitewas tobehandedovertothe Brothers,grassedandplantedwithtrees,theCouncil makingitselfresponsiblefor drivingpilesforthefoundationsofallthebuildings InadditiontheCouncil paidtheBrothers£267,000 cash.Theofferwastooad-

vantageoustoberejected. Sentimenthadtogobythe boardandagreementwas reachedbyallpartiescon. cernedinJune,1960.

StateGovernment

Becauseofthefactthat thenewsitewasonCrown Land,itwasnecessarythat thealienationbeapproved byaspecialActofParlia. ment.Inviewofthefateof similarBillsinrecentyears. itwasfearedthatsucha propositionmightnotbeallowedtogounchallenged. butthesefearsprovedfo; oncetobegroundless.The PremierandhisCabinet weremostanxioustosee theSchoolreceiveduerecompense,andonemember anon-Catholic,spokeat lengthof"aSchoolwhich haseducatedsomanyofthe State'sleadingcitizens."

Shortlyafterwardsthe wholeagreementwassigned andtheBrothers'Institute receivedthedeedsforthe site,ofthenewTrinityCollege. Thesubsequentinability oftheChevronCompanyto continuewiththeprojectin nowayaffectedtheCollege -indeeditwasforthis. reasonthatthestudentsof C.B.C.wereabletoresume theuseoftheirscienceblock andrestofthebuildings untiltheendofDecember andnotSeptemberashad previouslybeenarranged.

Thefriendshipbetween theGreatBishopandBrotherNunan,Headmasterof C.B.C.forovertwentyyears, wasslifelongone.They weretwofinemen,bound bytheirmutualrespectfox oneanother,alikeincou. rage,devotion,foresightand abilitytowork.Tothem, theCatholiccommunityin 111T.A.owesamajorportion ofitseducationalsystem.

MatthewGibneywasa strong,broaamindedand broad-shoulderedIrishman withanopencountenance andakindlywit-aman undauntedbyobstaclesor difficulties.Inthoseearly days,withvirtuallythe wholeoftheWesternState forhisparish,hismounted figurewasfamiliarfrom PerthtoAlbany,Geraldton toKalgoorlie.Onhislong rides,oftenthroughvirgin bush,ridingaloneandleadingapackhorse,hewasa welcomevisitortomanya lonelyIrishsettleralongthe way. Irishmanashewas,he lovedagoodhorse,became agreatbushmanandwas proudofit.

WhentheChristianBro. thersestablishedtheirfirst schoolinMelbournein1872, FatherGibney,bynow VicarGeneralandAdmini stratorofthePerthDiocese, triedtopersuadeBrother

Gibney,thenaveryelderlyman,gaveto ofC.B.C.hispectoralcross,madefromKolminersofKalgoorliein1903.

Treacytosendsomeofhis mentoPerth.Undeterred byareluctantrefusal,he continuedinhiseffortsto establishaCatholicCollege inhisdioceseandwasrewardedforhisperseverence in1893Ithenthefirstthree BrothersarrivedfromAdelaide. InorderthattheTerrace siteshouldbetheproperty oftheBrothers,abillof salewasdrawnup;the Brotherspaid£1,090for thepropertyandtheBishop returnedthemoneyashis

donationtothebuildingof theWestresidentialwing. Duringtheyearsthatfollowed,heblessedandencouragedtheschoolwhich healwaysregardedashis prideandjoy,makingon severaloccasionssubstantial giftstowardsthecompletion ofthemainbuilding. The25thannualmeetingoftheHolyName SocietyforthePerthDiocesanUnionheldrecentlywasnottheoccasionforcelebratingthe silverjubileeoftheSociety.Thiswasbecause oftheinabilityofthenationaldirectortobe presentattheproposedtime.Afittingcommemorationoftheeventwouldbeheldbefore theexpiryofthejubileeyear.Thegeneral secretary,Mr.M.Foley,saidthatFatherFitzmaurice,0.P.,wastakenupwithothercornmittmentsatthetimeoftheproposedcelebrations.

Inpresentinghisreport forthelastyear,Mr.Foley mentionedvariousaspects oftheHolyNameSociety, includingthedayofcontinuousRosaries,enclosed retreat,theHolyName Rally,bursary,annualprocessionandtheweeklyMass rosterofmembers.

MembershipintheHoly NameSocietywasjudgedon returnssentinby52ofthe branchesandthelastknown returnsof24brancheswho didnotsendtheirlatest figures.Theestimatedmem. bership,saidMr.Foley,was 4,489,includingjuniormembers.

Thesecretarycommented thatsomebrancheswerenot lookingtothefuture,inthe neglectoffosteringjunior membersofthesociety.
