          Duringthemeetingit wasreportedthatacurrent liveshowrunningatthe Playhousewasnotonlyobjectionableinthemebutalso crudeinexpression.
          Anotherleaderreported thatafriendwhohadrecentlycompletedadeportmentcoursewasrathernonplussedbytheattitudesof modelswhoparaded women'sunderwearinfront ofmixedaudiences.From thisitwasseenthatadetrimentaleffectcouldbeproducedinthemindsofsome membersoftheaudience.
          KENSINGTON Acombinedboys'and girls'leadersmeetingdecidedenthusiasticallythat Kensington'snextsocial eventwouldbeanevent withadifference.Allwere unanimousthatapicnic, barbecueanddanceshould beheld,thehighlightbeing agirlsversusboysfootball match.Thispicnicwilltake placeatthebeginningof May-moredetaailswillbe givenlater.

          TheTherrySocietyandHarroldWalsharetobecongratulatedandreprovedontheirlatestproduction. Theyaretobecongratulatedfortheirchoiceofplayaplaywhich,followingon"ChristmasintheMarket Place,establishedthemasastrongholdof20th-century Catholicdrama.
          Itisaplaythesuccessof whichdependslargelyon theplayeractingPontius Pilate;andheretheywere fortunateinobtainingin BrianCardanactorwell equippedinappearance,demeanourandattack.
          RosemaryFerguson,as Pilate'swife,andRegina Maxwell,asMaryMagdalen,ledamongahostof womendoingatleastadequatejusticetotheirparts. Judaswasinthehandsof thebestplayertheTherries haveeverpossessed.Peter Murphy'sAnnas,oneofthe bestjobshe'severdone,was initselfatributetotheproducer.Inmanywaysthe setsturnedtoadvantageone ofthemostdifficultof stageswithwhichaproducerhaseverbeenconfronted.
          Whythenwastheaudiencesosmall,solukewarm (forgivethepun!)andsometimessobewildered?The smallnesswasprobablydue asmuchtoapoorlyworded advertisementandpoorpublicitygenerallyastothe competitionoftheapproachingPassionPlay.
          Themaintrouble,however,wastheold,oldoneof inaudibility(atroublewith whichtheprofessionaltheatreisriddled).Theplay, aspreviouslystated,is Pilate'splay;andBrian Card'sadmirableconversationalunderplaying,which wouldhaveexcelledina smallmusicsalon,wastoo oftencarriedawayonthe windorhiddenbytheoccupantsoftherowinfront.
          Somuchwasthissothat AllenTerrie,who,asCaiaphas,over-actedinatleast oneinstance,yetwasso penetratinglyaudiblethat healmoststoletheshow fromPilate.Thisproblem ofaudibility,accentuatedby thecontemporarycustomof underplayingandthrowing awaylines,notonlycaused Mary'ssuperbcurtainline toActItobemissedby many,butevenleftthe majorityindoubtasto whentheplayhadended.

Everynowandagain,I drawattentiontopossibly thegreatestseriesinmusic, thepianoconcertosofMozart.Almosteveryoneof thelast15(fromK449onwards)isauniquemasterpiece,eachquitedifferent fromitsfellows.Herewe havethetwolastgreat ones(forNo.26,the"Coronation,"iscommonlyregardedastheleastofthe series).Theyaregreatly contrasted,K503beingakin tothe"Jupiter"initsOlympiangrandeurandK595 havingtheetherealquality ofverylateMozart,that other-worldlinessof"The MagicFlute."
          ThereisnotmuchdifferenceinthewayFouTs'ong playseitherofthem,noris theorchestraimpressive. Bothsidessoundlikecheerful,pleasantmusicwhich wouldmakeanexcellent backgroundforquiettalking amongfriends.Unfortunately,asfarasK503isconcerned,thereisn'tareally first-classperformancein existence;thebestIhave heardiswaybackin1956 (HaebleronVox).K595is muchmorefortunate, severalgoodperformances beingavailable,thebestof whichistheexcellentBrendel,alsoonVox;backedby K453,ofelfincharm,thisis oneofthebestrecordsof Mozartpianoconcertos.If youwantK595,buythat;if youwantK503,waitandsee whattheyearswillbring.

          ThisyoungFrenchpianistplayedagreatdealof Debussyathisrecitalin Perththeyearbeforelast andprovedhimselfanexcellentinterpreter.Thisisa widecross-sectionofDebussy,ingenerallikethe FirkusnyissuedbyCapitol abouttwoyearsago,butnot quitecoincidingindetail. Speakingfrommemory,this seemsatleasttheequal,if notthesuperior,oftheFirkusny;thatishighpraise, indeed.

          shortdailyreadingsselected fromherjustlyreveredand stillwidelyread"RevelationsofDivineLove."
          Ifthereaderisnotalreadyacquaintedwith MotherJulianandherfamousrevelationsImakethe strongestpossiblesuggestionthatthelackberemediedbyacquiring-thisvery finemoderntranslation.
          MotherJulianlivedfrom approximately1342to1413 andwasananchoressorrecluseinacelladjoiningthe ancientchurchofSt.Julian inNorwich.Shebelongsto asmallbutrenownedgroup ofmysticalwriterswhohave cometoberegardedasone ofthefinestfloweringsof Englishspirituality.
          Theselectionpresented hereisbasedonadaily readingoftwoorthree, paragraphsfromtherevelationsvouchsafedtoherat theageofthirtyandmeditatedonforlongyears.
          Toquotetheauthor'sown commentabouttheRevelations:

            IRISHNATIONAL CONCERT
          ALARGEand appreciative audiencepackedthe CapitolTheatreon Sundaynightforthe annualIrishNational Concert,whichwas comperedwittilyand breezilybyMr.Lloyd Lawson.
          Theeveningopenedwith apot-pourriofIrishairs playedwithniceprecision andtonebySt.Joseph's OrchestrafromVictoria Square,andaspecialbouquetshouldgotoSuzanne Mazlin,whosteppedintothe jobofconductoratshort noticeaftertheregular "maestro,"MissMarjorie Wyndham,hadbeenincapacitatedbyacaraccident. Theorchestralselectionwas anexcellentcurtain-raiser, andsetthestandardfora mostenjoyableevening's entertainment.
          Theseconditemonthe programmewasfromOur Lady'sCollege,andit provedoneofthemost movingofthenight'sitems. Verysimplymounted,with achoirdressedintheschool uniform,andcompetently comperedbyoneofthe seniorgirls,CatherineDillon,itconsistedofselections fromJohnO'Brien's "AroundTheBoreeLog," somesung,somerecitedby thechoir,onesungasasolo byDeirdreBurvill,andthe loveliestofthemall,"The PartingRosary,"recitedby MaryNoonan.
          Highlightsoftheactwere thedancingofasmallgroup tothefiddlingofTom O'Brienandthemimingof theamusing"Tangmalangaloo,"completewitha Bishoprobedinborrowed plumesofsuchauthenticity thatonesuspectedanaccompliceinthePalace.
          MargotRobertsonlooked herusualattractiveselfand sangthreenumbers,thefirst twoIrishandthethird "VoicesofSpring,"which gavetheaudienceanopportunityofhearingherdelightfulcoloratura,anda groupofdancersfromthe
          LONDONPHILHARMONIC WELLBALANCED
          Manyhundredsofmusic-loversinPerthwere astoundedtohear"GodSavetheQueen"playedbythe LondonPhilharmonicOrchestraatthebeginningofthe 1962seasonlastweek.Thesoundofareallybig orchestraissomethingquiteonitsown,thereisno substitute,notevenbythemostfaithfulhighfidelity.
          warhorses,likethe"Eroica" ortheBrahmsFirst,would havebeenarevolutionary experiencewhenplayedby L.P.O.The"WilliamTell" Overture,playedasanencore,certainlywas.

    Thedifferencebetween theL.P.O.andourlocal orchestraisnotmerelyone ofsize,however,butof balance.Whilethewoodwindsandbrassaremuch thesameinthetwoorchestras.andthereareonly16 firstviolinsasagainst12, theL.P.O.hasdoubletho numberofsecondviolins, violasandcellos,together witheightbassesasagainst three.Theresultisamassivestringbasslinewhich canholdagainstbeing swampedbythebrassin fortisissimopassages;the brassdoesn'thavetohold itselfinandtheresultis overwhelming.
          Theperformanceswere greetedwithuproariousapplausewhichwaswelldeserved.Thetwofinestpieces were,Ithought,VaughanWilliams'"Fantasiaona ThemebyTallis"andStravinsky's"FirebirdSuite."
          Intheformerthestrings oftheorchestradividedinto twoparts,oneofwhichwas agroupofnineplacedat thebackofthestage.This playedantiphonallywith themainorchestra,rather likeaconcertogrosso,ex-
          ceptthatsometimesthe frontstringswerelimitedto asoloquartet.Itwasa hauntinglybeautifulperformancewitharemarkable feelingofperspectivein sound.
          Itwasinthe"Firebird" Suite,however,thattheperformancerosetoitshighest peak.Toatleastonelistenerthiswasthemostworthwhilemusicoftheevening withawidedynamicrange andvividlycontrastingorchestracolour.Thetechnical qualityoftheorchestra showedtoitsbestatstaccatopassagesintheInfernal DanceofKasthei,wherethe drumsandaboutseventy stringsproducedatransient whichhadthementaleffect ofacannonshot.
          Sibelius'sFifthSymphony. aftertheStravinsky,seemed stodgyanddull.Ican'thelp butfeelthatitsinclusion wasamistake,atleastfor Perth.WhileMelbourneand Sydneyhavefull-sizeorchestras,Perthhasn'tand manypeoplehere,particularlytheyoung,haven't heardoneofthegreatclassicalsymphoniesplayedby abigorchestra.Eventheold
          NormaAtkinsonSchoolof Dancingfilledinwithtwo items,onefromthelittle onesandtheotherfromthe seniormembersofthe school. Thefirsthalfoftheconcertconcludedwithachoir fromCastledareunderthe directionofBrotherMurraysinging"Macnamara'sBand" and"KittyofColeraine." Theaudiencewasinamood tohearmore,andthechoir wereultimatelyprevailed upontosingtheirschool song.
          Aftertheinterval,the CarneyTrio,piano,'cello andviolin,gaveavery polishedrenditionof"The LastRoseofSummer"and "TheSnowy-Breasted Pearl,"whichwasfollowed byaverycolourfuldisplay bythegirlsoftheBrigidine Conventonthethemeof "TheKerryDancers."This wasmostartisticallymounted,withstonewallsonthe frontsidesandabackdrop ofacountrysetting.
          ThetenorRonPolisistrini wasingoodvoiceforhis threenumbers,"Listen, Mary,""Macushla"and "MotherMachree,"andthe seniorgirlsofSantaMaria followedwithaverypleasantactentitled"AnIrish Hunt."Apartfromthe excellenceofthehunting costumes,theiritemwas notable'forthesplendid choralwork. NoSt.Patrick'sNight ConcertthesedaysiscompletewithouttheSt.Mary's CathedralChoir,andIactuallyspoketosomeenthusiastsintheintervalwho wereneitherparentsnor Irish,andwhoconfessed theyhadNinetohearthe Choir.Theconcertdirector, FatherAhern,hadreserved themforlastandtheymade anexcellentfinalewiththe boysandmen theirsoutanesandsurplicesgrouped aroundatableaufromOur Lady'sCollege.Theysang tooIrishnumbers,"LondonderryAir"and"Erin!           Dublin'sLordMayor, RobertBriscoe,isJewish, andhassucceededaProtestantMayor,Maurice Dockrell,inacitywhichis overwhelminglyCatholic, andbothmenduringtheir termsofofficehaveworked untiringlytolinktheIrish andtheiremigrantsthrough St.PatrickandhisDay.

          Thereareabout15million peopleintheworldwhoare sufferingfromleprosyand oftheirnumberonlyabout 2,500,000arereceivingmedicalcare.Thefactthatabout 1,125,000patientshavebeen curedofthediseaseshould inspireaidfortheothers whoarewaitingtobe helped.Morethan12,000,000 arethuswaitingbutleprosy withoutcaredoesnotwait.
