TheArchhbishopwasattendedat.thethroneby VeryRev.FatherPeter, 0.F.M.,andtheRev.Father J.Dowling,Administrator, Guildford.TheMasswas sungintheGregorianchant bythestudents.

The"RedMass,"the SolemnVotiveMassinvokingtheinspirationand blessingoftheHolySpirit, isthecustomaryandfitting mannerofbeginningthe year'sworkinmanyCatholiccolleges,andforvarious professionalgroups.Last Thursday'sMasswasoffered thattheHolySpiritwould bestowHisblessingsupon St.Charles',inthisits21st year,andthatHewouldaid thespiritualandscholastic progressoftheseminarians.

AftertheMass,HisGrace addressedthestudentsin theSeminaryChapel.He remindedthemofthosedisciplesofSt.JohntheBaptist,whoweremovedtoask OurDivineLordwhereit wasHedwelt,andofthe

StudyingatSt.Charles' thisyearare47students,of whomfourarefortheDioceseofGeraldton,fourfor Bunbury,andmostofthe remainderfortheArchdioceseofPerth.With20 studentsstudyingphilosophy,theSeniorHouseis filledtocapacity,while23 students,comprisingSubLeaving and Leaving classes,havetakenupthe greaterpartoftheaccommodationavailableinthe JuniorHouse.Fourmore students,althoughtheyhave passedtheLeavingCertificate,havenotdonesufficientLatintoenterinto theirstudiesinphilosophy. Twooflastyear'sstudents havegoneontostudy theologyattheSeminaryof St.FrancisXavierinAdelaideandoneatSt.Patrick's College,Manly.Afourthhas gonetojointheSocietyof St.ColumbaninSassafras, Victoria.

THEwholeworldhasbeenthrilledandhas reactedfittinglytothelatesttriumphin space-travel.Theresearch,skillandpatience ofAmerica'sscientistshavebeenrewardedby theirvictoryinthisfirstattempttocirclethe globebythismethod,whilstthe-daringand competenceofthepilot,ColonelGlenn,put himinthefirstrankofpioneeringcosmonauts.

WestAustraliahaditsmodestshareofreflectedglory inhavingthetrackingstationatMuchea,andthelocal S.E.C.electricalsupplyprovidedawelcomespotof lightforthetraveller.

Butbeyondthesepassingevents,sofullyreported byTVradioandnewspapers,anundoubtedlylargeand variedamountofinformationhasbeengatheredonthis occasionbythescientists.Thefirsthumanthinkers andearlyphilosophershadtakentheuniverseasthe objectoftheirinquiry,andintheirtraditionthe physicistshavefollowed.Age-longresearchhasbeen madeintothenatureandmake-upoftheworld,its origin,itscause,anditsgovernment.Manyofthe Investigators,however,missedtheclearlyoutstanding conclusionsoftheirinquiriesinsofarastheydidnot seetheevidenceprovingtheSupremeLordand Creator.

Build-UpOfKnowledge

Theirobservations,experiments,andprobings,as thoseofmodernphysicistsandscientists,werebased uponandpresupposedthefixednatureofthethings theydealtwith-whethermaterialsorgasesoratoms orotherthings-andreliedontheirconstantcharacter, aswellasonthelawswhichgoverntheiractivities. Whenthescientistshadgainedsufficientknowledge aboutcertainobjects-atoms,elements,atmosphere, radiationandsuch-theexpertsatCapeCanaveral thenknewhowtoconstructtheirspace-vehicle,to launchit,tokeepitinorbit,andtobringitbacksafely toearth.

Forallthiswemustgiveduecredittothesespecialists fortheirintelligenceandgenius,butweshouldalso remembertheSupremeIntelligenceofGod,Whofirst madeandregulatedallthings.Thenaturesandthe lawswhichthescientistslearnaretheresultsofthe all-powerfulCreatorandtheall-wiseLawgiver;and weshouldnotfailtonotethatthescientistsarenot makingthelawsoftheuniverse,butarediscovering themandmakinguseofthepotentialitiesofthingsas theyfindthemalreadyexisting.

Now,thevarietyofobjects,theirnumber,their constancy-forinstance,theotherworlds,theimmensityoftheheavens,thepowersofnature,thecapacities inheatandlight-allarguetotheoneCreatorand ProvidencefromWhomtheycomeandbyWhomthey areregulated.WeknowthatGodsaidthroughSt. PaulinthelettertotheRomans(chapterI,verse19, etc.)thatordinarymenknewofGod'sexistenceclearly, duetoHisshowingitincreatures.Fromthefoundationoftheworldmenhavecaughtsightofhisinvisible nature,hiseternalpower,andhisdivineness,asthey areknownthroughhiscreatures."

AttentionToMan,NeglectOfGod

Therefore,St.Paulargues.thereisnoexcusefor themnothonouringHimandthankingHim:"knowing God,theywhoclaimedtobesowise,turnedfools," andworshippedidolsinsteadofthetrueGod.How morefoolishshouldwejudgeourpresent-daylearned men,ifthey,too,failtobeassuredofAlmightyGod's existence,giventheirwidestudyofHiscreaturesand theirgreaterknowledge,andiftheybe-drawninstead toworshipotherthings,neglectingGod?

Thefindingsfromthiscirclingoftheearthwillsolve somemoreoftheriddlesofcreation,andman'sexcursionsintospace,wherehepicksupthetracesofGod's work,willaddtohumanscience;butwilltheynotalso pointclearlyandevidentlytothegrandsystemofthe universeorganisedbytheCreator,plannedinfull detail,andguidedaccordingtoHisfixedcodeoflaws? Theywillleadthescientisttohumilitybeforethe inexhaustiblewisdomofGod,ratherthantoanyproud satisfactionintherelativelyfewtruthshehaslighted upon."Thehighestprivilegeofthescientist,"wrote Keppler."istorecognisetheSpiritandtotracethe thoughtofGod."ItistoGod,then,thatourspacesuccessesshouldturnoureyesinreverence,andwe maythenseetheworksofGodleadingustorecognise andknowHimmotefullyandmorethoughtfully.

EffortToGain SupportFrom LeftCondemned

CARDINALOTTAVIANI,Secretaryof theSacredCongregationoftheHoly Office,hassharplycriticisedcurrentefforts toformanItaliangovernmentwiththe supportoftheextremeleftists.

TheCardinal'sstatement,publishedbytheASSI NewsAgency,brokethesilencetheItalianHierarchy hassofarobservedregardingtheso-called"opening totheleft."

Thedecisiontoseekthe"opening"wasmadeon February1atthecloseofthenationalconventionof theCatholic-orientedChristianDemocraticparty, whichhasgovernedItalyaloneorincoalitionsince 1948.Thefollowingday,PremierAmintoreFanfani resignedandanouncedthathewouldseektoforma coalitiongovernmentwiththesmallSocialDemocratic andRepublicanpartiesthatwouldhavethesupportin parliamentoftheleftistSocialistparty,aformerally oftheCommunistparty.

Therewasnothingnewinthecoalitionitself,for theSocialDemocratsandtheRepublicansareoldallies oftheChristianDemocrats.Thenewelementwas foundinthedeclarationthatthesupportofthe Socialistswouldbeaccepted.

Inrealitythiswasa"watt-and-sec'attitudeonthe partoftheChristianDemocrats.Butthecatchwas thattheSocialistsalsowantedtowaitandsee.

TheChristianDemocratsweresayingineffect:"Let's seeiftheSocialistshavereallyseparatedfromthe communists."TheSocialistsweresaying:"Let'ssee yourprogrammebeforewepromiseoursupport."

ChurchRejectsMarxism,Materialism

CardinalOttavianistaid:"TheteachingoftheChurch isconstantandconsistent.Itrejectseverykindof demagogicalsolutiontosocialquestions,andtherefore alsorejectseveryformofMarxismandmaterialism degradingthehumanpersonandhumandignity.The defenceofChristianvaluesisfundamentalandbinding toall'Catholicswhoareengagedinthiswork,particularlywhentheyarefiguresinpubliclife.

"Today,forexample,improvidentChristiansare shamefullybartering,amongotherthings,freedomof educationinItaly.Theydothisfortheirowninterests andpersonalgain.ButtheChurchwillnotpassively bearthisnewwaveofmaterialismwhichisbeing hurledagainstItaly.ItistheChurch'srightandduty topreventit."

Romenewspapersinterpretedthestatementasbeing aimedprimarilyatFanfaniforhisnegotiationsfor Socialistpartysupport.Fanfaniannouncedthatagreementhadbeenreachedontheformationofanew cabinetanditspolicy.Hesaid:"Ibelievethatthenew governmentmaybegiventhesupportofthesocialists." Fanfani'sstatementhasbeeninterpretedasindicating thatthequestionofStateaidtoprivateschools,which aremainlyCatholicschoolsinItaly,willnotbeincluded intheeducationplanbeforeparliament.

ItmeansthatOurLordpassesusbyeachdayin everyopportunitytodogood.Ifweneglecttheopportunity,HesloesnotrevealHimself.

WhenthefalseChristcomeshewillsay:"Iam Christ.-ButnetsowiththeDivineChrist.Heseems towalkbyus,tryingourdimeyesandweakhands, toseeifwehavefaithenoughtowantHim.Heleaves usindarknessifweasknotfortheLight.Neverdoes Heactindependentlyofourdesiresforintimateunion withHim.Hebreaksdownnodoors;thelatchison ourside.Hestandswithoutthedoorandknocks.

WaitingToBeCalledUpon

Thissameprincipleofhidinguntilsoughtafteris evidentthroughoutHislife.AtJericho,therewasa blindmanbythenameofBartimaeus,whokeptcrying out:"Jesus,SonofDavid,havepityonmet'TheLord pretendedtopasshimby,butdespitetherebukeeven ofothersinthecrowd,theblindmancriedoutmore loudlyandwascured.

SoitwaswiththewomanwhocamefromtheneighbourhoodofTyreandSidon-whopleadedthatHe wouldcureherdaughterwhowastroubledbyanevil spirit."Hegavehernowordinanswer;Hisdisciples cametoHimandpleadedwithHim:'Ridusofher,' theysaid."Butafterfurthertestingherfaith,He answeredher:"Woman,forthisgreatfaithofthine, letthywillbegranted.Andfromthathourher daughterwascured."

ItwassowithMagdalenonEastermorn;heallowed hertosearch,weep,inquire,departandreturn,before HemanifestedHimself.

Thestormatseawasanotherinstance.OurLordhad remainedonthemountaintoptopray.Fromthat eminenceHecouldseetheApostlesstrugglingonthe sea."Twilighthadalreadycome,andtheboatwas halfwayacrosstheseawhileHewasontheshorealone. Andwhenthenighthadreacheditsfourthquarter, seeingthemhardputtoitwithrowing(forthewind wasagainstthem),Hecametothem,walkingonthe sea,andmadeasiftopassthemby.Whentheysaw Himwalkingonthesea,theythoughtitwasan apparition,andcriedaloud,forallhadseenHim,and werefullofdismay.ButnowHespoketothem:'Take courage,'Hesaid,"itisMyself;donotbeafraid.'"

SeemingLossCausesConversion

ThepretendingthatHewouldgofurtheristheturningpointinmanyalife.Theconscienceisquickened bythevoiceofafriendoralinefromabook;a suspicionisarousedwhich,ifwepursuedit,would gainentranceintotheCityofLight;aremorsegives consciencescopeasoneawakensatnight-alltheseare theLordpassingby.Whennothingisdone.whenthe impulseisnotactedon,thenHereallypassesby.

Everywordthatcomestousabouttheuncomforted, thehomeless,theleper,aretheSonofGodpasssingby. IfweletHimpass,Hemayneverberecalled.Graces unusedarenotoftenrepeated;whispersignoreddonot becomeshouts.Allthroughlife,ourhandswillstretch forthemptyoftherichestblessingsofwisdomand truthunlesstheyarefirstusedtoclutchatthesleeve oftheDivineWho"makesasifHewouldpassusby." Emotionalresponsivenesswithoutpracticalissueharms thesoul.Thedramastirstheemotions,butawakens nodutiestowardstheafflictedonthestage.Forthe momentwemayfeelweareonthesideoftheangels. ButitiswhattheRomanscalled"ignisfatuus"-the emptyfire-thepleasurableglowthatconsumesno evilandilluminesnopath.

TheKimberleyshavecomealongway sincethosepioneeringdays.Yetitisnotfar enough.RecentlytheattentionofAustralia wasfocusedontheKimberleyswitha nationalappealforfinancetoassistinmuchneededreconstruction.Theappealwaso success.

Iwouldpointouthere,thatimmigrationisan adventurenotonlytothemigrant,butthecitizen bornandbredandrearedinhisownland.The newcomerfacestheunknownquantitiesinvolved inhisdecisiontoestablishanewlifeinastrange community.Hismostanxiousthoughtmaywell be:"HowwillIbercceived?"Inturn,thecitizen bornherefacesthechallenge-perhapsunexpected -ofasuddeninfusionofnewideasandcustoms,a newandvibrantforceinhisnationalstreamof thoughtandwayoflife.Inaddition,theolder residentisfacedwiththenecessityoflivingin accordancewithChrist'steachings,inpeaceand goodwillnotonlywithhisneighbours,bitwithhis fellowmenofwhatevercreedandwhatever country.HisChristianityis,infact,puttoavery practicaltest.

Perhapsitisbecauseit wasonlyasecondaryinn thatitstillsurvivestoday, alittlepieceofoldJapan inthemodernworldwhere theauthorfounda250-yearoldtraditionofhospitality stillstrong.
