:God,too,haswithinHimselfblueprintsofeverything intheuniverse.Asthearchitecthasinhismindaplan ofthehousebeforethehouseisbuilt,soGodhasinHis Mindanarchetypalideaofeveryflower,bird,tree,
springtimeandmelody.Thereneverwasabrush touchedtocanvasnorachiseltomarblewithoutsome greatpre-existingidea.So,too,everyatomandevery roseisarealisationandconcretionofanideaexisting intheMindofGodfromalleternity.Allcreatures belowmancorrespondtothepatternGodhasinHis Mind.Atreeistrulyatreebecauseitcorrespondsto God'sideaofatree.
Inmarriage,too,lovebeginswithadream.Asa Frenchauthorputit:"Toknowawomanatthehour ofdesire,onemustfirstrespectherattheexquisite hourofdream."Lovethenisanactoffaith;adeclarationoftheunseenasthereal, Ifidealsarenothigh,iftheblueprintsoflovearenot beautiful,thenthemarriageitselfwillnotbebeautiful. Assomemindscanlistentothebarbarictom-tomsof anti-music,sothereareheartsthatcanbesatisfiedwith abodywithoutasoul.Hencetheneedofamoral preparationformarriage.St.FrancisdeSalesonce saidthat"Inmarriageonetakesavow.Butitisthe onlyinstancewhereavowistakenwithoutanovitiate. Ifithadayearofnovitiate,howfewwouldenterinto it."
Thenovitiateofmarriagemustnecessarilyembrace twoelements:thespiritualisationofpersonallives,in orderthatthesublimearchitecturalblueprintoflife's partnerbeformedwithinandaconstantprayerthat GodHimselfwilldisposehistoricalconditionstomake thedreamscometrue.
Withmarriageanditsripeningwiththefruitoflove, therewilldawnanewunderstandingthateveryone carrieswithhimablueprintoftheoneheloves,and thatOneisGod.Theotherpartnerthenisseenasthe Lord'sJohntheBaptist,preparingthewayandmaking straightHispaths.Godwasjusthalf-seenthroughthe flesh,butthankstolife'scompanionship,onebecomes moreandmoreattunedtotheDivineForkthatgave theoriginalmelodyontheweddingday.

WITHthehustleandbustleofthepre-Christmas preparationsinfullswing,atimelywarningis appropriate.Ithappenseachyearand,ifanything,getsworseyearly.Unlesseveryonewhohasthe knowledgeofthetruesignificanceofthistimeacts accordingly,wewillsimplyincreasethecommercialisationofChristmasandgraduallyforgetourownstandardsofreverenceanddignityofthefeast.
Bynow,everyonehasheardofthesignificanceof AdventasatimeofspiritualpreparationforthecelebrationofthecomingofChrist.Weshouldheedthe wordsthatwerespokenandprepareourselvesaccordingly.
Ifourpreparationhasbeeninaccordancewiththe mindoftheChurch,thenourjoyatChristmaswillbP notjustthegivingofgiftstothefamily,the-children andfriends,butitwillbecentredontheloveofChrist andthegreatactHeperformedfortheloveofmen
Steadily,yearbyyear,wehaveseenthelittleoh, manintheredcoatandthewhitewhiskersarriveir variousways,butalwaysearlierandearlier.Onestore, or,morelikelytoday,achainofstoreswilltrytobeat theotherstothestartoftheChristmasshoppingspree.
Onesectionofthecommunityispickedout,because psychologicallytheyaretheonestostartwith-the children.Christmasisforthechildren;FatherChristmascomestothechildren-andsothebuyingstarts.
Itispreciselyourchildrenwhohavetobeprotected againstthispsychologicalsalestrick.Thereason? Becauseiftheydonotrealiseintheirearlyyearsthe realreasonforChristmas,theywillgrowupwiththe presentideaofjustanotherbreakfromwork,everyone forsome"strange"reasonsaying"MerryChristmas" andspendingmorethantheycannormallyaffordon food,drinkandpresents.
Mostpeopletodaybemoanthefactthat"Christmas hasbecomejustanotherracket!"Ithasonlybecomeso becausetheythepeoplehaveletit,givenagoodurge, ofcourse,bysalespromoters.
ChristmascanbeChrist-centredandstill,behappy. Infactitwouldbemoreso.Becausethelovewhichwe wouldgivetoChristwouldradiatetothosearoundus, whetherathome,intheofficeorsocially.
Arrangementsshouldfitinwiththepresentmindof theChurchonAdventandthenonthegreatMassof ChristmasitselfwiththeferventreceptionofChristin HolyCommunion.NotmakingChristandHisgreat birthdayfitinwithourarrangements,oftentothe detrimentofourhonourduetoHim.

SOMETWOYEARSAGO,thePresidentofSt.Patrick'sCollege,Goulburn,approachedMr. Bass,whoacceptedthecommissiontoforminclearfirmoutline,apieceofstatuaryin accordancewithhisideaofEdmundRice.Afterpenetratingenquiryanddeepthought,the sculptorcrystallisedashisfinalsynthesisofthequalitiesofthegreateducator-"Anintense Irishnesswhichexpressedthefullsenseofhistemperamentandcharacter."Heconceived BrotherRiceasa"powerful,monolithicIrishsquiretypeofman.Inthestatuemustbe expressedthesturdiness,thedependability,theresolutiontoovercomealldifficultiesin ordertoachievehisvisionofsavingtheyouthofhiscountryfromspiritualandintellectual degradation."
APARTfromitsdaringproportions-itisoverten feettall-themoststrikingfeaturesofthe sculpturearethetremendousstrengthandexpressivenessoftheface,thesetofthehead,thesteadinessof thegaze.
Theexpression,whilenotoneofforceorarrogance, isneverthelessofstrikingpowerandsuggestshisgreat Faith,hisbeliefinthemanlyvirturesandhistremendouscapacityforgeneratingcourageandloyaltyin others.
Therightarmproudlyholdsaloftthesymbolsofhis ChristianEducation,theBookofallknowledgeandthe schoolofinstruction.Thevigourofthegesture,with itsimplicationofresoluteleadership,iscontrastedwith thequiettrustofthechildwhograspshiscloak,andis intendedasaremindertohissonstopursuethosesame idealswiththeFaithinGod,andthemanlinesswhich wereevertheguidinglightofhisownendeavours.
TomBass,whosereligiousandsecularpiecesare muchindemandthroughoutAustralia,isafourth generationAustralian,livingandworkinginthequiet countrysidenearMinto,NewSouthWales.Hewon Australiawideacclaimwhen,in1956,hisenormous bronzefigures,"Man"and"TheTrialofSocrates,"were chosenforMelbourneUniversity'snewGreatHall.
In1957hebegandoingworkforCatholicchurches, afterhehadbecomeinterestedintherecommendations forliturgicalartofPopePiusXII.Soonafterwards, withhiswifeandfamily,hewasreceivedintothe Church.Allofhisbronzepieces,inadditiontobeing worksofconsummateartistry,arepregnantwithmeaning,andthisisparticularlythecasesincehehas broughttohisworksthefullnessofhisnew-found religiousinspiration.
ProbablythequalitywhichmostdistinguishedMr. Bass'sculpturesfrom,themoreconventionaltypeof statuaryisthestressplaceduponcommunicationof ideasthroughthemediumofart.T.S.Eliot,perhaps thegreatestoftheso-called"modern"poets,oncemaintainedinanswertoaqueryaboutthe"difficulty"of muchofhisversethat"Thesetruthshavenoliteral proseequivalent,simplybecauseitisoftheessenceof poetrytosuggestmuchmorethanitcanexplicitly state."
Asimilaranswermightbemadetothosewhodemand photographicaccuracyinsculpture,paintingandstained glass.ThisisasubjectuponwhichMr.Basshas expressedhimselfstrongllyinanarticlewrittenfor thequarterlypublication"Quadrant"in1958.
"Thefirstandmostimportantobjectiveistocapture theinterestofthecasualobserver,andonesureway todothisistoarousecuriosity Toholdthisinterest wesuggestmeaning andoncewehavemanagedto suggestmeaning,thattheworkcontainsanidea,or maybeasubtlecomplexofideas,ourmanisbeginning tobequitedeeplyinvolved.

Suchideasstrikeatthebasisofaveryrealcontemporaryproblemandraisethewholequestionofthe purposeofgenuinereligiousart,whichmustultimately betheraisingofthemindandhearttoGod.
Theroleofartinreligionisessentiallyanactiveone -itisnotmerelyrepresentative,anditstruefunctionis notonlytheexpression,butalsothecommunicationof thegreateternaltruths.
Thegreatestofalltruthsarereligioustruthsandthis helpstoexplainwhysomuchoftheworld'sgreatart isreligiousart.Yettheinspirationofsomeconventionalstatuarywouldseemtobenotanew,avitalor alovingapproach,butratheracarryover,astalereproducationofthesentimentalRomanticismofthelate eighteenth-centuryFrenchschools.

BUTMORESHARPLYNOTICEABLEisthemuch betterresponsefortheearlymorningMassesopening theday-longvigil,theincreased REAL numbersattheCommunion table,andtheunexpectedlyPARTICIPATIONfineturnoutforthethreeeveningdevotionsduringwhichthe shortOfficeoftheBlessedSacramentcanberecited backandforthbythepeopleinthepews.
ThewordsofSt.PiusXarebearingfruitafterhalf acentury.Wecanneverforgethisemphaticdeclarationthat"Theprimaryandindispensablesourceof Christianpietyistobefoundinactiveandintelligent participationintheHolySacrifice."

Itistheresult,notthe method,whichmatters.I foundthisaprofoundly beautifuldisc,wellworth aplaceinanycollection. Therichnessofthevoiceis perfectlymatchedbythe richnessoftheorchestra andrecording.
