EVERYPERSONcarrieswithinhisheartablueprintoftheoneheloves.Whatseemstobe "loveatfirstsight"isactuallythefulfilmentofdesire,therealisationofadream.Plato, sensingthis,saidthatallknowledgeisarecollectionfromapreviousexistence.Thisisnot true,ashestatesit,butitIStrueifoneunderstandsittomeanthatwealreadyhaveanideal inus,onewhichismadebyourthinking,ourhabits,ourexperiencesandourdesires.Otherwise,howwouldweknowimmediately,onseeingpersonsorthings,thatwelovedthem?Before meetitngcertainpeoplewealreadyhaveapatternandmouldofwhatwelikeandwhatwedo notlike;certainpersonsfitintothatpattern,othersdonot.

WHENwehearmusicforthefirsttime,weeither likeitordislikeit.Wejudgeitbythemusic wehavealreadyheardinourownhearts. Jitteryminds,whichcannotlongreposeinoneobject ofthoughtorincontinuityofanideal,lovemusicwhich isdistracting,excited,andjittery.Calmmindslike calmmusic:thehearthasitsownsecretmelodyand oneday,whenthescoreisplayed,theheartsanswers: "Thisisit!"

SOITISWITHLOVE.Atinyarchitectworksinside thehumanheartdrawingsketchesoftheideallovefrom thepeopleitsees,fromthebooksitreads,fromitshopes 4nddaydreams,inthefondhopethattheeyemayone dayseetheidealandthehandtouchit.Lifebecomes satisfyingthemomentthedreamisseenwalking,and thepersonappearsastheincarnationofallthatone loved.Thelikingisinstantaneous-because,actually, atwastherewaitingforalongtime.

:God,too,haswithinHimselfblueprintsofeverything intheuniverse.Asthearchitecthasinhismindaplan ofthehousebeforethehouseisbuilt,soGodhasinHis Mindanarchetypalideaofeveryflower,bird,tree,

Inmarriage,too,lovebeginswithadream.Asa Frenchauthorputit:"Toknowawomanatthehour ofdesire,onemustfirstrespectherattheexquisite hourofdream."Lovethenisanactoffaith;adeclarationoftheunseenasthereal, Ifidealsarenothigh,iftheblueprintsoflovearenot beautiful,thenthemarriageitselfwillnotbebeautiful. Assomemindscanlistentothebarbarictom-tomsof anti-music,sothereareheartsthatcanbesatisfiedwith abodywithoutasoul.Hencetheneedofamoral preparationformarriage.St.FrancisdeSalesonce saidthat"Inmarriageonetakesavow.Butitisthe onlyinstancewhereavowistakenwithoutanovitiate. Ifithadayearofnovitiate,howfewwouldenterinto it."

Thenovitiateofmarriagemustnecessarilyembrace twoelements:thespiritualisationofpersonallives,in orderthatthesublimearchitecturalblueprintoflife's partnerbeformedwithinandaconstantprayerthat GodHimselfwilldisposehistoricalconditionstomake thedreamscometrue.

Withmarriageanditsripeningwiththefruitoflove, therewilldawnanewunderstandingthateveryone carrieswithhimablueprintoftheoneheloves,and thatOneisGod.Theotherpartnerthenisseenasthe Lord'sJohntheBaptist,preparingthewayandmaking straightHispaths.Godwasjusthalf-seenthroughthe flesh,butthankstolife'scompanionship,onebecomes moreandmoreattunedtotheDivineForkthatgave theoriginalmelodyontheweddingday.

LovewhichbeganasPassion,thenbecameanAct andnowintheautumnoflifebecomesonceagaina DesirebornofMemory;thenew"passionlesspassion" strainsattheleashoflifetobeonewithLife,Truthand Love.ThewordsofOurLordnowrepeatedlycometo theirminds:"Thosewhoarefoundworthytoattain thatotherworld,andresurrectionfromthedead,takeneitherwifenorhusband-Thatmeansthatsex,which reflectedtheanimalkingdom,willnotexistineternity, butlove,whichisareflectionofGod'sUnbodiedessence, willremaintheireternalecstasy.Therewillbenofaith inHeaven,forwewillalreadysee;therewillbeno hopeinHeaven,forwewillalreadypossess;butthere willalwaysbelove.GodisLove!

WITHthehustleandbustleofthepre-Christmas preparationsinfullswing,atimelywarningis appropriate.Ithappenseachyearand,ifanything,getsworseyearly.Unlesseveryonewhohasthe knowledgeofthetruesignificanceofthistimeacts accordingly,wewillsimplyincreasethecommercialisationofChristmasandgraduallyforgetourownstandardsofreverenceanddignityofthefeast.

Bynow,everyonehasheardofthesignificanceof AdventasatimeofspiritualpreparationforthecelebrationofthecomingofChrist.Weshouldheedthe wordsthatwerespokenandprepareourselvesaccordingly.

Ifourpreparationhasbeeninaccordancewiththe mindoftheChurch,thenourjoyatChristmaswillbP notjustthegivingofgiftstothefamily,the-children andfriends,butitwillbecentredontheloveofChrist andthegreatactHeperformedfortheloveofmen

Steadily,yearbyyear,wehaveseenthelittleoh, manintheredcoatandthewhitewhiskersarriveir variousways,butalwaysearlierandearlier.Onestore, or,morelikelytoday,achainofstoreswilltrytobeat theotherstothestartoftheChristmasshoppingspree.

Onesectionofthecommunityispickedout,because psychologicallytheyaretheonestostartwith-the children.Christmasisforthechildren;FatherChristmascomestothechildren-andsothebuyingstarts.

Itispreciselyourchildrenwhohavetobeprotected againstthispsychologicalsalestrick.Thereason? Becauseiftheydonotrealiseintheirearlyyearsthe realreasonforChristmas,theywillgrowupwiththe presentideaofjustanotherbreakfromwork,everyone forsome"strange"reasonsaying"MerryChristmas" andspendingmorethantheycannormallyaffordon food,drinkandpresents.

Mostpeopletodaybemoanthefactthat"Christmas hasbecomejustanotherracket!"Ithasonlybecomeso becausetheythepeoplehaveletit,givenagoodurge, ofcourse,bysalespromoters.

ChristmascanbeChrist-centredandstill,behappy. Infactitwouldbemoreso.Becausethelovewhichwe wouldgivetoChristwouldradiatetothosearoundus, whetherathome,intheofficeorsocially.

Arrangementsshouldfitinwiththepresentmindof theChurchonAdventandthenonthegreatMassof ChristmasitselfwiththeferventreceptionofChristin HolyCommunion.NotmakingChristandHisgreat birthdayfitinwithourarrangements,oftentothe detrimentofourhonourduetoHim.

SOMETWOYEARSAGO,thePresidentofSt.Patrick'sCollege,Goulburn,approachedMr. Bass,whoacceptedthecommissiontoforminclearfirmoutline,apieceofstatuaryin accordancewithhisideaofEdmundRice.Afterpenetratingenquiryanddeepthought,the sculptorcrystallisedashisfinalsynthesisofthequalitiesofthegreateducator-"Anintense Irishnesswhichexpressedthefullsenseofhistemperamentandcharacter."Heconceived BrotherRiceasa"powerful,monolithicIrishsquiretypeofman.Inthestatuemustbe expressedthesturdiness,thedependability,theresolutiontoovercomealldifficultiesin ordertoachievehisvisionofsavingtheyouthofhiscountryfromspiritualandintellectual degradation."

APARTfromitsdaringproportions-itisoverten feettall-themoststrikingfeaturesofthe sculpturearethetremendousstrengthandexpressivenessoftheface,thesetofthehead,thesteadinessof thegaze.

Theexpression,whilenotoneofforceorarrogance, isneverthelessofstrikingpowerandsuggestshisgreat Faith,hisbeliefinthemanlyvirturesandhistremendouscapacityforgeneratingcourageandloyaltyin others.

Therightarmproudlyholdsaloftthesymbolsofhis ChristianEducation,theBookofallknowledgeandthe schoolofinstruction.Thevigourofthegesture,with itsimplicationofresoluteleadership,iscontrastedwith thequiettrustofthechildwhograspshiscloak,andis intendedasaremindertohissonstopursuethosesame idealswiththeFaithinGod,andthemanlinesswhich wereevertheguidinglightofhisownendeavours.

TomBass,whosereligiousandsecularpiecesare muchindemandthroughoutAustralia,isafourth generationAustralian,livingandworkinginthequiet countrysidenearMinto,NewSouthWales.Hewon Australiawideacclaimwhen,in1956,hisenormous bronzefigures,"Man"and"TheTrialofSocrates,"were chosenforMelbourneUniversity'snewGreatHall.

In1957hebegandoingworkforCatholicchurches, afterhehadbecomeinterestedintherecommendations forliturgicalartofPopePiusXII.Soonafterwards, withhiswifeandfamily,hewasreceivedintothe Church.Allofhisbronzepieces,inadditiontobeing worksofconsummateartistry,arepregnantwithmeaning,andthisisparticularlythecasesincehehas broughttohisworksthefullnessofhisnew-found religiousinspiration.

ProbablythequalitywhichmostdistinguishedMr. Bass'sculpturesfrom,themoreconventionaltypeof statuaryisthestressplaceduponcommunicationof ideasthroughthemediumofart.T.S.Eliot,perhaps thegreatestoftheso-called"modern"poets,oncemaintainedinanswertoaqueryaboutthe"difficulty"of muchofhisversethat"Thesetruthshavenoliteral proseequivalent,simplybecauseitisoftheessenceof poetrytosuggestmuchmorethanitcanexplicitly state."

Asimilaranswermightbemadetothosewhodemand photographicaccuracyinsculpture,paintingandstained glass.ThisisasubjectuponwhichMr.Basshas expressedhimselfstrongllyinanarticlewrittenfor thequarterlypublication"Quadrant"in1958.

"Thefirstandmostimportantobjectiveistocapture theinterestofthecasualobserver,andonesureway todothisistoarousecuriosity Toholdthisinterest wesuggestmeaning andoncewehavemanagedto suggestmeaning,thattheworkcontainsanidea,or maybeasubtlecomplexofideas,ourmanisbeginning tobequitedeeplyinvolved.

"Heiscurious,interested,andthescentofanidea willsoonstimulatetheimagination.Whentheimaginationisaroused,theworkofartreallygetsthechance toworkonthemindofthepersonatthelevelthatis propertoart Itishereorperhapsalittlebeyond itthathebecomeesawarethathehasa,spirituallife aswellasarationalexistence.Hereartcancommunicatetheultimaterealitiestoman."

Suchideasstrikeatthebasisofaveryrealcontemporaryproblemandraisethewholequestionofthe purposeofgenuinereligiousart,whichmustultimately betheraisingofthemindandhearttoGod.

Theroleofartinreligionisessentiallyanactiveone -itisnotmerelyrepresentative,anditstruefunctionis notonlytheexpression,butalsothecommunicationof thegreateternaltruths.

Thegreatestofalltruthsarereligioustruthsandthis helpstoexplainwhysomuchoftheworld'sgreatart isreligiousart.Yettheinspirationofsomeconventionalstatuarywouldseemtobenotanew,avitalor alovingapproach,butratheracarryover,astalereproducationofthesentimentalRomanticismofthelate eighteenth-centuryFrenchschools.

Thefirstbuildingtobeusedwasin FaniufaandwascalledtheSacredHeart School.ThelandwasgiventotheSisters bythenativesofNewGuinea,andthey helpederectahushbuildinguntilthe Administrationtechnicalitieswerecompletedandaproperschoolerected.

OneofthoseSisterswhovolunteered forthejobandwhosestaywouldbe typicalofalltheothersintheworkwas SisterMaryJulian,oftheConventof Mercy,VictoriaSquare.

SisterJulian(neeClarke)enteredthe ConventofVictoriaSquare,andafterher novitiateandtraining,taughtatSubiaco, GosnellsandOurLady'sCollege,which latterwasherappointmentfornineyears.

WiththreeotherSisters,shewasacceptedforthenewGorokaMissioninthe EasternHighlandsofNewGuinea.

SisterJulianisnowhomeonsomewellearnedleave-buthermaintask,however, isinterestingeverybodyintheworkof Gorokabyshowingslidesofthemission.

Thisbuildingwasfinancedbythepeople CofAustralia.Theroofwasfinancedbythe childrenoftheMercyschoolsinW.A.This wasthefirstmissionschooltoberegisteredbythe Government,EarlierthisyeartheEducationDepartmentaskedthattheirnativetraineesbesenttherefor demonstrationandcriticismlessons.

ReportsreachingViennafromBelgradeindicatethat Yugoslav'sCatholiclaymenviewthegovernment's,offer withconfidence.Theyhopeparticularly,reportssaid, thatthequestionofreligiouseducationandtheCatholic Presswillbesettledsatisfactorily.

TheRomereportsindicatethattheYugoslavregime doesnotforeseearesumptionofdiplomaticrelations withtheHolySee.RelationswiththeChurch,the regimesays,willbemaintainedinsteadthroughtheYugoslavBishops.

Vatican-Yugoslavrelationswerebrokenoffin December,1952,bytheTitogovernmentonthepretext thattheHolySeewasinterferinginitsinternalaffairs. ThecommunistregimeallegedthattheHolySeewas behindtheYugoslavBishops'protestagainsttheestab- lishmentofgovernment-controlledpriests'associations. Theregimesoughttousetheassociationsasameansof separatingthelowerclergyfromtheBishops.

ThewordsofSt.PiusXarebearingfruitafterhalf acentury.Wecanneverforgethisemphaticdeclarationthat"Theprimaryandindispensablesourceof Christianpietyistobefoundinactiveandintelligent participationintheHolySacrifice."

FortoolongwehavebeencontenttoletChristdoit. Devoutsoulsspentlonghoursinsilent(andwesuspect, thoughtless)kneelingbeforetheBlessedSacrament exposedonthealtar,Therecanbenoobjectiontothis. Infact,Iknowofanumberofparisheswherequiet groupsofdedicatedsoulsaremaintainingaperpetual vigilbeforetheBlessedSacramentandareundoubtedly earningshowersofgracesfortheirparishes,their familiesandthemselves.

Thenumbergrowseachmonthasmore menbecomeawareofasolidarity seldomexperiencedinsilentprayer. ThesemenlovetorecitetheOfficeoftheBlessed Sacramenttogether,andthis,Iamconvinced,isthe reasonforthesuccessoftheNocturnalAdorationprogramme.

Thisshiftingofemphasisfrom"lettingChristdoit" whilewepassivelyabsorbHisblessingstoaconcentrationondoingsomethingourselvestogetherwithChrist isawholesomemanifestationofwhattheso.called "liturgicalmovement"hasbeentryingtogetacross.

WhatSt.PiusXmeantwhenheurgedactiveparticipationisnowbeingrealised.Thepeopleinourcongregationsaremoreandmoresayingthingsanddoing triingsintheirworship,insteadofwaitingforChristto doitforthem.

ItistruethatChrististhesuprememediatorandthat Hisprayeristhemostperfectprayer.Itisalsotrue, however,thatwearethemembersofChristandthat weareexpectedtoactwithChrist,throughChrist,and inChrist.

Itisbelievedtobethe firsttimethatapopehas usedtheOldSlavoniclanguageinaliturgicalceremonyinmorethana thousandyears.Thelast recordedinstancewasby PopeAdrianIIin867.

ThecelebrantandconcelebrantsoftheLiturgy representedthegreaterpart oftheOrientalChurch. ArchbishopIvanBucko, ApostolicVisitorofthe UkrainiansandRuthenian oftheByzantineRiteresidentinWesternEurope,was celebrant.Thecon-celebrantswereprelates,representingtheMelkites,Russians,Ukrainians,Ruthenians,RumaniansandGreeks. TheOrientalprelates, mostofthembearded,were dressedinthecolourful vestmentoftheirrites.They woregem-studdeddiadems insteadofthemitreofthe LatinRite.Theypreceded thePopeupthecentreaisle oftheBasilicatotheplace ofceremony.

Afterallhadtakentheir places,thecardinals,the celebrantandthecon-celebrantsbowedtothePope. ThenthePopetookthe smallgoldencross,typical oftheorientalliturgy,and withitimpartedallbenedictionsduringtheceremony excepthisfinalapostolic blessing.

WhenArchbishopBucko, wearinghissparklingdiademandcarryingthesnakeentwinedorientalformof crozier,mountedthePapal throneforthekissofpeace, PopeJohnthrewwidehis arms, ArchbishopBuckoandthe Popeembracedinbright floodlightsbelowthestatue ofEliastheProphet.Then theorientalbishopsexchangedthekissofpeace andembraced27cardinals inranksbelowthePapal throne.

Theamountofresearch whichwentintothisbook becomesapparentasone readsit,butitneverobtrudesitselfassuch,and theresultisanexceptionallyreadablebiographyof acharacterwhocouldeasilyhavebeenthecentral figureofanhistoricalromance.

WilliamLightwasabrave andresourcefulsoldier,a competentartistinhis sparetime,andacharming personatalltimes, He wontheaffectionofmost peoplewithwhomhecame incontact,and,ifoneacceptsthereasonablehypothesisofhisbiographer, thosewhoseaffectionshe failedtowinwereeither unprincipled,stubborn(like Hindmarsh),oramoral(like hissecondwife,adaughter ofthethirdDukeofRichmond.)

Thisisabookthatshould proveaclassicofAustralian biography.Itisabout equallydividedbetween Light'scareerpriortohis arrivalinSouthAustralia andhisherculeantaskof settlingthenewcolony downinthespothehad chosen.Thefirsthalfis perhapsmorecolourful,but thesecondwillholdthe readerenthralledjustas muchasthefirst.

No onecanquitegetthoseglorioustonesofFerrier'svoice, almostorganlikeintheir richnesssoDeccadecided torecordtheorchestralpart againanddubthevoice. SirAdrianBoultwasapparentlyveryreluctanton artisticgroundsbutbecameenthusiasticduring theextremelydifficultrecordingsessions.Thehigh andlowfrequencieswere filteredfromtheoriginal tape,leavingonlyFerrier's voiceandamutilatedorchestra. Theorchestral partwasthenrecordedin stereoandthetwotapes combined.Theresultis morethanatechnicaltriumph;itisartistryofan highorder.

Itistheresult,notthe method,whichmatters.I foundthisaprofoundly beautifuldisc,wellworth aplaceinanycollection. Therichnessofthevoiceis perfectlymatchedbythe richnessoftheorchestra andrecording.
