AfterpointingoutthatOurBlesed Lordwelcomedthechildrenfortheirinnocence,andimpartedawarningthatwe shouldallbecomeaslittlechildrenin ourapproachtoGod,FatherMcCrann vigorouslyattackedthepresentpropagandaofthemodernworldtowardsdenial, ofthenaturallaw,inmattersrelatingto conception,birthandupbringingof children.

MoneyDoesSmell IfItComesFrom ASewerOf Dishonesty
"MONEYHASNOSMELL."SuchwasthemottoofaRomanEmperorwhoimpliedthat itmakesnodifferencefromwhatevercesspoolitiswashedup.Hencethedishonestcan disregardthesourcefromwhichmoneycomes,whetheritbefromunderthetable,fordope orillicittraffic.
THEreadinesstoseparatethemoneyfromthe cesspool,thegainfromthesourcebywhichone gainedit,thedisallowancethatthereisany,suchthing as"taintedmoney,"hasdonemuchtobreakdownthe consciencewhichaffirmsjusticeasgivingtoeachthat whichishisdue.
Oneofthebestknownexamplesof"easymoney"is tobefoundinthepublicansofJewishsocietyatthe timeofChrist.Theirlandhadbeenconqueredbythe Romans,whosatontheirhighercourts,passedRoman coinageintheirmartsandparadedsoldiersintheir streets.
Oneofthemostcontemptibleofthecitizenswasone whowouldsellhimselfouttotheRomansforthesake ofmoney.
Hisplanwasverysimple.Hewouldbargaintopay, say,£100,000intaxesinourmoney,foracertainarea ofthecity.Thepublicanwouldcollect£250,000in taxesandpocketthedifference-because"moneyhad nosmell."

BUTTHISWASNOTALL.Weareherefaceto facewithrestitution.Halftothepoorandfourfoldtothosewhomhecheated,thatwashispromise.
Whatwouldhappentooursocietyifgangsters,dis- honest grafters,craftymerchants,false imagemakers,didthesameforoursociety?Thetruth isthatmoneydoessmellifitscomesfromasewerof dishonesty.
Thespotthatisleftfromsomesinscanbeblotted outbyprayersandpenance,butdishonestyrequires thatthereberepaymentinkindandquantityatleast. Thecrimeofstealingremainssolongasthefruitsof thecrimearestill,inourhands.
Therearesomewhoaregeneroustophilanthropies, butforthesakeofbeingcalledgenerous;thishowever hasnorelationtojustice.
Restitutionisaproofofrepentance.Shameisnot enough,remorseisnotenough,confessionisnotenough, servingfouryearsinprisonisnotenough-theremust betherestoringofthebalance.
Therestorationmustbetothepersonfromwhomit wastaken,ifpossible;itmustbeinkindalso;this failing,itmustbeequalinvalue.
Butifrestitutionissostrict,asZaccheushimself recognisedwheninthepresenceoftheGod-man,then whatshalltherestitutionbeforeruiningthecharacter, thehomes,andthereputationofothers?

Thissacrament,ofcourse,isExtremeUnction.This finalanointingwhichisintendedtoassistusoverthe thresholdbetweenlifeanddeathhastremendousbenefitsanditisunfortunatethatitisnotbetterknownand moreappreciated.
ITISSTRANGEhowmanypeopletherearewhowill notcallapriesttobringtheLastSacramentstoone whoisindangerofdeathbecausethey SERIOUS donotwanttoalarmtheirlovedoneby lettinghimknowthatdeathisadefinite INJUSTICEprospectinhiscase.Thosewhodoact inthismannerareguiltyofaserious injusticeagainsttheveryonetheylovesomuch.
ExtremeUnctionhastherichspiritualpowerof accomplishingtheforgivenessofvenialsinsinone unabletomakehisownActofContrition,eventhe forgivenessofmortalsinswhereoneisproperlydisposedbutunabletomakehisownconfession.Itcan removethetemporalpunishmentduetosin.Inmany instances,ithasabeneficialphysicaleffect.
Apriestfriend,whoisahospitalchaplain,toldme thatatleasthalfofthosewhomheanointedinExtreme Unction,andinhospitalthenumberismany,showeda definiteimprovementintheirconditionafterwards. Someexperiencedanimprovementunaccountableto theirdoctors.
Sowecanseewhyitisveryunfairtodepriveanyone fromreceivingthefullbenefitofthisimportantsacrament.Whenoneisindangerofdeathfromsickness, woundoraccident,heiseligibleforthissacrament andweshouldthinkofcallingthepriestasfastaswe callthedoctor.
Thedangerofdeathmustbereal,butitdoesnot havetobeimmediate.Forexample,sometimesan individualhasanincurablediseaseanddoctorsgivethat individual"sixmonthstolive."Bythistheymean thatdeathcouldcomeatanytimewithinthatperiod andthatlifebeyondthatperiodisextremelyunlikely.
Certainlysuchanindividualiseligibletoreceive ExtremeUnctionanditwouldbewrongtodenyhim untilheisinhislastagony.
WEKNOWOFONESUCHCASEwhereawomanwith adeathsentencefromcancerapproachedherparish priesttorequestthissacrament ofExtremeUnction.Notonly didheadministerittoher,but more,hesoughtandreceived permissionfromhisBishopto administerthesacramentinchurchonSunday.
BeforetheprincipalMassthepriesttooktimetogive afullexplanationofthesacramentandthespiritual andphysicalbenefitsitofferstothoseindangerof death.Then,infrontoftheentirecongregationand solicitingtheprayersofallfortherecipientofthe sacrament,headministeredittothewoman.
Whatanimpactthatmusthavehadonall.Probably morethan90percentofthosepresenthadneverwitnessedtheadministrationofthisparticularsacrament. Maybetheydidnotknowtoomuchaboutit.Buthere wasavividlessoninthesacramentallifeoftheChurch.

RadioCaribeformonths hasbeenincreasinginsults againsttheChurchandthe Bishops.InearlyOctober itreportedthatthegeneral managerofthestationhad beensummonedtotheSecretariat'ofStateandtold thattheNunciatureofthe HolySeehadcomplained aboutitsbroadcasts.The actingsecretaryofState thereforeaskedthatthestationtonedownitsreferencestotheclergy,itsaid.
RadioCaribe'spartinthe actwasoneofutterdefiance.Itsaid:

"Herhusbandhadthe righttodemandabsolute obedience,andifsherefusedtolivewithhimin theplaceofhischoicehe couldadministerforce.
"Herproperty,witha fewunimportantexceptions,andevenherearnings,becamehis;his rightsoverthechildrenof themarriagewereabsolute,andhersnonexistent."
Ifsheventuredtoleave acruelhusband,notonly didherpropertyremaininhispossession,butshe hadnorighttoseeher children.
MissHeilbronthought thatthepositionhadbeen neatlysummedupina 19thcenturywillinwhich thegeneroushusband wrote:leavetoJoanna Smythe,mydearlybelovedwife,thesilver candlesticksgiventoher byhermotheronour weddingday."
In1839,MissHeilbron said,themotherhadobtainedtherightofaccess toherinfantchildren,and therightofcustodyto thosounderseven,and thusoneofthemainreasonswhichhadforceda wifetolivewithaviolent husbandhadbeenremoved.
Women'srightsingen- eralhadbeguntoimprove inaboutthemiddleofthe century,andin1882had comefullrecognitionof marriedwomen'sproperty right.
In1891ithadbeenlaid saw
downthataMancould neither'beatnorimprison hiswife.
Andin1935thelast remnantsoftheoldlegal fictionthatawomanon marriagebecamemerged inthepersonalityofher husbandhadbeenswept away,whenthemarried womanhadbeengiven fullcapacitytosuefor civil minorwrong(except,with herexceptions,tosue husband).
Withlegalequalityhad comeachangeofheart duringthelasthundred years,MissHeilbronsaid,butonlyasaresultofa longandverybitter strugglebypioneers,both menandwomen.
Inherview,women's positiontodaywastheresultoftheattainmentof legal theequality,education, franchiseandtheemploymentofwomen;and legalequalitywasthe basicfactor.
MissKamilaTyabji, whohasmadeaclose studyofMohammedan Lawandwasthefirst womantopleadasalawyerbeforethePrivy Councilwhenitwasthe SupremeCourtofthe Commonwealth,agreed aboutthecontributing factors,butcouldnotattachleadingimportance tolegalequality.
IntheEast,shesaid,ithadbeenfoundthatthe womenwhogotintodifficultieswerethosewho didnotknowtheirrights,andshewouldtherefore placefirstsocialawareness-aself-confidence thatenabledthemtoenforcetheirrightswhere necessary.
