ATEENAGERisatthefirstofoneofthethreegreatcrisesoflife;theothertwocrisesareapt tocomeinmiddleage,andinoldage,andneitherofthemisasseriousasthefirst,whichis THECRISISOFYOUTH.
THETHREECRISEShavetodowiththebodyas regardsyouth,themindasregardsmiddleage, andthingsasregardsoldage.
Eachofthesethree:thebody,mindandpossessions orthings,areallgoodinthemselves,buttheyare capableofbeingperverted,justasfireisgood,butit becomesbadwhenitburnsdownthehouse.
Thedivisionbetweentheseagesisnotabsoluteand rigid,forthereisapttobeaninordinatedesireofflesh, powerorgreedinanyage.Butmiddleageisapttobe moreconcernedwithpride,power,egotism,fromwhich willflowjealousy,hateandenvy,andgettingaheadby tramplingonothers.Oldageveryoftenseeksasubstituteforimmortalitythroughavariceorgreed,believing thatonehasworthbecauseoneiswealthy.
Butourprincipalinteresthereiswiththeteenager. Thereisarushofbiologicalsapintothetreeoflifeat thebeginningofteenage.Thistremendousvitalenergy thatflowsintoyouthispopularlycalled"sex,"though thatisnotagoodnameforit.
Thisbiologicalurgedoesnotonlyaffectthebody,but alsothemind.Therepercussionsinthebodyareeasily recognised,suchasdesirefortheoppositesex,the immediacyofcarnalvaluesandamorbidcuriosity aboutitsmeaning.Butitseffectonthemindisofeven greaterimportance.
Infact,therearetwochangesoflife;oneatthe beginningofthereproductivepowers,andtheotherat theirend.Thesecondreceivesmuchattention,butthe firsthasanequalimportance.Itaccountsforthe giddiness,theunpredictability,theanti-socialattitudes ofteenagers.
Parentsarenottobecomediscouragedaboutthis teenagementality;teenagerswillgrowoutofitsanely
andhelpfully,butonlyonconditionthattheyare properlydirected. Therearecertainthingsateenagermustremember aboutthisvitalurgewhichseemstomakesomany demands:
1.ItcomesfromGod,Whohasputintoevery humanbeingtwotremendousurgesinordertoassure bothindividualandsociallife.Intheindividuallife, Hehasimplantedahunger,oraloveofeating,which assurespersonlife.Inordertoassurethepropagation ofthehumanspecies,AlmightyGodhasimplanteda pleasureassociatedwiththesocialorder.Bothofthese pleasurescomefromtheCreatorandcanbecomewrong whentheyareusedinadisorderedway.
2.Thesecondpointisthatthisvitalurgeiscalled sex,buttheteenagermustneverbelievethatmanis tobeunderstoodintermsofsex.Itissexthatistobe understoodintermsofman.Acarisnottobeunderstoodintermsofaclutch;itistobeunderstoodinterms ofitsentiremechanism.
Sexinahumanbeingisnotthesameassexinan animal.Itwould,therefore,bequitewrongtosay thateveryonemustfollowhisnature,becauseour natureisdifferentfromthatofapig.Thehuman natureisrational;thatistosay,itisgovernedbya conscience.Hence,theinstinctortheurge,orthevital pushistobeunderstoodintermsofrightand,wrong, andnotmerelyintermsofdesire.
Theanimallovesthepleasure;ahumanbeinglovesa person.Sexisreplaceable,butloveisnot.What happens,therefore,inahumanbeingisquitedifferent fromwhatwouldhappenintheanimalorder.

TheaspirationsofCairo naturallymeetobstaclesin theArabcountries,in AfricaandintheAfroAsiangovernments.Oneof itsmostsubtleproblems, however,willbetokeepits communist"friends"from usingittopromoteMoscow'sinterestsinallthree groups.
PresidentNasseraccepts materialaidandtechnicians fromtheSovietUnion,but heprefershisU.A.R.studentstolearnfromnoncommunistcountries.
In1959-60,whileabout 600studentsfromtheUnited ArabRepublicattendedinstitutionsbehindtheIron Curtainwiththeirgovernmentspermission,some
6,000fromEgyptalonewere assignedtostudyinWestern countries.Probablyanother thousandortwofromSyria werestudyingintheWest. Thefiguresareunofficial, butarebasedonacareful educationalsurvey.
In1958-59thenumberof UnitedArabRepublicstudentsauthorisedtogoto communistcountriesfor studywas890.Whenthey wereaskedtoreturninJuly, 1959,some45refused,defectingtothecommunists.

TheLumumbatroopsweresenttoKasaiwhileMr. Lumumbawasinvirtuallyundisputedcontrolofthe centralCongolesegovernmentinLeopoldville.Their taskwastoputdownthesecessionofBalubatribesmen whohadtakenrefugeintheeasternpartofKasai Provinceanddeclaredthemselvesindependentofthe Congo.AlbertKalonji,whoasBalubachieftookover thepremiershipofthebreakawayState,calledit"MiningState"afterthediamondminesthataboundinthe region.
ThetroopsofPatriceLumumbaattackedthecivilian population,killingthousandsofBaluba.

TherealityoftheFifthPreceptoftheChurchobliging ustocontributetothesupportofourparishseemsfar removedfromthem.InmyownexperienceIvery seldomhavehadanyoneaccusehimselfinconfession ofhavingfailedtosupporthisparish,althoughthisis anobligationinconscience.
THREEFOLD BLESSING
INSTEADofbeinganecessaryevil,ourweekly contributiontoourchurchisanecessarygood.Perhaps wehavedriftedtoofarfromthe originalpracticeoftheChprchin regardtoourofferingsatchurch. Maybetheseofferingswouldmean moreifwewouldreturntothe originalpracticeoftheChurch.TheOffertory,oneof thethreeprincipalpartsoftheMass,isthepartofthe people,asistheCommunion.Heretheyactuallyjoin withtheirpriestingivingandtheninreceiving.The Consecration,ontheotherhand,isthespecificprovince ofthepriestinwhichheusesthesacredpowersgiven himinOrdination. IntheearlyChurch,attheOffertory,thefaithful approachedthealtarbearingtheirgifts-loavesof bread,bottlesofwine,abasketoffruit,apieceofmeat, abushelofvegetables.Theylefttheirgiftsbythe altar,wherethepriestblessedthemwithathreefold blessingashedoesnow:"Haecdona,haecmunera,haec sanctasacrificiaillibata."
The"dona"werethepeople'sgiftstobedistributed incharitytotheneedypoor.Oftheirsuperfluitythey turnedovertotheChurchaportiontohelptheirless fortunatebrethren. The"munera"weretheircontributionstothesupport oftheirclergyandtheworkoftheChurch,prettymuch asthecollectionisdirectedtoday.
The"sanctasacrificia"werethematerialofthesacrificeitself.Fromthebreadthathadbeengivenand fromthewinethepriestwouldtakesomeofbothto beusedasthematerialtobeconsecratedinthisparticularMass.
OUR SACRIFICE
THUSTHEPEOPLEhadaverygraphicrealisation oftheirpartintheMassandtheusetowhichtheir giftsinkindweredevoted.Today. however,weliveinadifferent economy.Insteadofhavinganeconomybuiltonthetradeandbarter ofmaterials,oureconomyisfounded onamoneysystem.Hence,inchurchwecontribute themonetaryvalueofouroffering.Thisinitselfmakes ourgiftlesspersonalandunlesswerealisethatour offeringintheweeklyenvelopeistobedevotedtothe samethreefoldpurposeoutlinedabove,wedonotfeel thenecessityofgivingasweshould., TheSundaycollection,then,isnotanevil.Itisa necessarygood.Wearetakingpartinasacrifice.This meansthatwemustoffersomething.Thethingthat weofferrepresentsuswhodotheoffering.Wedonot, therefore,wanttobeniggardlywithGod.Insteadwe wantourofferingtobeasgoodandgenerousaswecan makeit.

By"missionminded,"Idon'tmeanjustgettinginto thehabitofdroppinganoddpennyorthreepenceinto thelittlecardboardmissionmoney-boxesthatarein somanyhomes,buttohaveaconstantawarenessthat themissionisavitalroleoftheChurchandthatour childrenlearnofthisatanearlyage.
Thisisgoingon,notonlyinAustralia,butallover theCatholicworld.InresponsetothecallofChrist firstofall,andnowthroughHisVicar,PopeJohn,every Catholicisaskedtoprayforandsupportthemissionary est workoftheChurch.
Whereourpartcomesinthefamily,andthisawarenessoftheroleoftheChurch,isintheencouragement ofouryoungchildren.Togiveourownportiontothe missionsthroughthemtoupholdbeforethemthewonderfulexampleofthosegrown-upswhoworkforthe missionstoperhapsinspirethemthattheytoooneday mighttaketheplaceofthosemissionaries,eitherasa priest,abrother,anunoralaymissionaryvocationwhichisbecomingmoreandmorethoughtof.

INPERTH,threeyoungwomenhaverespondedtothe urgentappealmadein"TheRecord"threeweeksago forlayhelpersinDerby.TheyareMissesMargaret Collopy,ofNedlands,PatriciaMiller,HiltonPark,and PenelopeHind,ofComo.MissCollopyandMissMiller havqgonetoDerby,MissHindtoWanderingMission. HelpwasurgentlyneededfromOctobertoDecember.
INWASHINGTON,U.S.A.,ninewomenhavestarteda nine-to-ten-monthstudyprogrammetopreparethem forthreeyearsofvoluntaryworkinthemissions.
TheyaretraineesfortheWomenVolunteerAssociation,formerlyknownasWomenVolunteersforAfrica andoriginallyunderthedirectionoftheWhiteSisters ofAfrica,butnowoperatedbyalaystaffwithheadquartersinWashington.
Candidateshavetobebetween22and35yearsofage, completedcollegeorprofessionaltrainingandmust havethedesireofcontributingthreeormoreyearsto theChurch'sapostolateoverseas.
Thewomenincludethreenurses,threemedicaltechnologists,ateacher,apharmacistandananaesthetist. TheirW.V.A.studyprogrammewillconsistofcourses inMissiology,orthescientificstudyoftheestablishmentoftheChurchinthemissions,theologyand spiritualformation.
Practicalsessionsandlecturescoursesinspecificfields whichwouldbeusefulinoverseasworkalsowillbe provided.
Thecoursesaregivenintheeveningandthevolunteersarechargedafeetocovertraining,overseastransportationandroomandboard.Theymayworkon regularjobsduringthedaytimeinordertopaythefees.
Missionassignmentsareusuallydecidedabouthalfwaythroughtheprogrammesothatthewomencan concentrateontrainingsuitedfortheareastowhich theywillbesent.Inthemissionstheywillworkdirectly underthebishopofthediocesetowhichtheyassigned, theassignmentsnolongerbeinglimitedtoAfrica.
Abasicprogrammeofspiritualityisencouragedfor thetrainees.whichincludesdailyMass,periodsfor mentalprayer,spiritualreading,grouprecitationofthe Rosaryandamonthlydayofrecollection.

Duringhiseightdaysin NigeriaMr.Lemassattended severalofficialfunctions, culminatingonthemorning ofOctober1intheceremonialoath-takingbythe Governor-General.HisExcellency,SirJamesRobertson,G.C.,M.G.,G.C.V.O., K.B.E.,andthehanding overtotheFederalPrime Minister,SirAbubaker TafawaBalewa,ofdocumentsestablishingtheindependenceofNigeria.
Mr.Lemassrecalledthat Irishmissionaryeffortsin Nigeriabeganbetween50 and60yearsagoandplay averyimportantrolein theeducationalandmedical,aswellasreligious, lifeofthepeopleofNigeria. Nigerianleaders indicatedtohimthatthey wereanxioustoseeanextensionofIrishaidinthat form.TheTaoiseachalso tooktheopportunitywhile inNigeriaofsatisfyinghimselfthatinthecaseofteacherstheconditionsunder whichtheyserved,includinghousingaccommodation, wereeminentlysatisfactory. Irishteachersnowworking inNigeriaareenthusiasJeticabouttheresultsoftheir work.
INCREASED INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION
Industrialproductionin Irelandhasbeenincreasing thisyearatanevengreaterratethanin1959,itself averygoodyear.Standards oflivingarerisingandunemploymentisdeclining. Thiswasstatedbythe ChairmanoftheIndustrial DevelopmentAuthority,Dr. JamesP.Beddy,whenhe addressedtheCorporationof InsuranceBrokersofIrelandinDublinonOctober 6. Inthefirstsixmonths ofthecurrentyear,saidDr. Beddy,16newfactories cameintoproductionas comparedwith'14in1959 and10inthePreceding year.

R.:ShehasinmindtheEnclosedReligious OrdersoftheCatholicChurch,suchasthatofthe CarmeliteNuns,whoforsakeallworldlyinterests andcontactsinordertodevotethemselveswithin theseclusionofthecloistertoalifeofprayerand contemplation.When,however,sheaskswhatis thevalueofsuchalife,wehavefirsttoexplainthe variouskindsanddegreesofvalues.Thereare valueswhichcanbeappreciatedonlyaccordingto one'sstandardsofeducation,understandingand insight,whethertheybematerialvalues,cultural valuesorspiritualvalues;andwhethertheyareto beconsideredasgoodinthemselvesandfortheir ownsake,ormerelyfromautilitarianpointof view.Nowinabriefreplyonecannotprovidethe educationnecessaryforittomeanverymuchto thosewhohavegivenlittlethoughttothesubject, andwhosewholewayoflifeisdifferentfromthat ofotherswhichpuzzlesthem.

HiltonParkgaveapolishedexhibitionofspeed andteamworkandthoroughlydeservedtheirwin. ShentonPark,however, wereunfortunateinthat LeonleQuigley(goalcr) wasunabletoplaydueto illness,andthiseffected(ho balanceoftheteam.
Duringthefirstquarter HiltonParkattackedrepeatedlyandShentonPark defendersJenniferLiddy andLynMorganhadahard taskinendeavouringtorepelsuchattacks.However, theresultofHiltonPark's goodplaywasshowninthe scoreatquartertimewhich read8goalsto1inHilton Park'sfavour.
Thefinalscoreshowed HiltonPark29goalsto ShentonPark13,which gavethe1960A-grade PremiershiptoHiltonPark onceagain.
