Q.:St.Peter'sEpistlecan hardlybeclassedwith someofSt.Paul'swhich hementionsas"hardto understand,"forSt.Peter wasevidentlywritingTO BEUNDERSTOODbythe baptisedones.

R.:Thatwillneverdo.

Foritisabsurdtosuggest thatSt.Paulwaswritingin ordernottobeunderstood bythebaptisedonesto whomheaddressedhis epistles!

St.Peter'sreferencetothe difficultyofunderstanding certainthingsinSt.Paul's epistlesconcernedsupernaturallyrevealedmysteries whichoftheirverynature surpassedthecapacityof unaidedhumanreason, and concerningwhichSt.Paul himselfwarnedhisreaders thatthenaturalmandoes notperceivethosethings whichareoftheSpiritof God.

Furthermore,thereisin thisveryEpistleofSt.Peter himselfapassagesohard tobeunderstoodthat Peake's(Protestant)"CommentaryontheBible"describesitas"verydifficult,"andoneofthemost obscureintheNewTestament.

Thepassageis1Pet3.1820,whereChristissaidto havegone,duringtheperiod betweenHisdeathandresurrection,topreachto"the spiritsinprisonwhichsome timeweredisobedient,when oncethelong-sufferingof Godwaitedinthedaysof Noah."

Catholics,ofcourse,with theirdoctrineof"Limbo,"or anintermediatestateafter deathwhichisneitherheavennorhell,havenotthe samedifficultyinunderstandingthispassage;but thatdoesnotmeanthateven forthemallobscurityisremoved.

AsPeake's"Commentary" remarks,thepassagehasto beartheburdenofaspecial revelationabouta"special activityofChristconcerningwhichtherestofthe NewTestamentissilent." Q.:How,afterhavingexperiencedsomethingof therealitiesofwhichSt. PeterspeaksinFirst Epistle,couldIpossibly admitthatIam"apoor banishedchildofEve,"as theprayertheBlessed VirginMary,the"Hail, HolyQueen,"putsit.

R.:Nodifficultyarises hereforonewhobelieves inandunderstandsthe Christianreligion;nordoes St.Peter'sEpistlecontain anythingwhichcanrightly beregardedascausinga difficulty.

Christiansbelievethatthe fallofourfirstparents, AdamandEve,broughtdisasteruponthehumanrace, forfeitingforusalltheright toeternalhappinessinheaven-arightwhichcouldbe restoredtousonlybyGod's mercifulplanforredemption. Now,asbothsexescooperatedinourdownfall,so, inGod'sjustice,bothsexes arerepresentedinourrestoration.ChrististheSeccondAdam;MarytheSecondEve.Anditisonlyfittingthat,,inprayingto Mary,weshouldrecallthe factthatwearepoorbanishedchildrenofEve,our firstmother,appealingto theSecondEveappointed byGodtotakeherplacein thereversingofthedecree againstus.

SoSt.Peterwritesinthe veryFirstEpistleyoumention, thatweshouldmake gooduseofoursufferings, gainingaredemptivevalue forthembyunitingthem withthesufferingsofChrist; sothat,hewrites:-When Hisgloryshallberevealed, yemaybegladalsowith". exceedingjoy"(1Pet4:13).

TheCardinalnotedthattodayonehearsargumentsthatpriestlytrainingmustleavebehind traditionalstandardsandworksothat"thepriest mighthavegreatercontactwiththeworldand occupyhimselfmoredirectlywithearthlyquestions,withthefalseexcuseofattendingtothe spiritualneedsofhistimes."

CitingtheteachingsofSt.JosephCafasso,an Italianpriestofthelastcentury,CardinalPizzardo said:"Theroadwhichmustbefollowedeventodayisverydifferent.Itis theroadofdetachmentfromtheworldandoftotaldedicationtothe Lord."

CardinalPizzardosaidthatunderstandingthis viewmakeseverything"easyinthetrainingand lifeofthepriest.Workandsacrificeitselfwill becomeforhimagloryandacrown.

"Thissameprinciplewillbethesoulofanintimateandconstantheroism,whichgivesthecleric andpriestthemostpowerfulwingsbywhichto reachtheheightsofsanctity,sinceeverythingin theirlifewillbecomeanofferingofpureoblation totheLord."
