TheBrothersoftheSt.VincentdePaulSocietyheldtheirquarterly FestivalmeetingontheSundayfollowingthefeastof
Vincent, theirprincipalpatron(July19).
Thisyear,theoccasion wasallthemorenotablebecauseitmarkedthethird centenaryofthedeathof St.Vincent.TheBrothers commemoratedthedayfittinglyatSt.Mary'sChurch, Leederville.
Arecordnumberofmen fromthevariousconferencesintheArchdioceseattendedthecelebrations,some travellingquiteadistance.
AFestivalMeetingisa conveningofthesocietyfor discussionofcommonpoints ofinterestandachancefor thememberstomeeteach other.
Thecelebrationsbeganat 2.30p.m.withtherecitationoftheRosary,ledby theRev.P.Cunningham, assistantpriestatLeederville. Asermonforthe occasionwaspreachedbythe chaplaintothe"Particular Council"(thecouncilofconferencepresidentsandvicepresidents),theRev.J.F. Dorian,C.M.TheceremoniesintheChurchwereconcludedwithaolemnBenedictionoftheBlessedSacrament.Theparishpriestof St.Mary's,Leederville,Rt. Rev.MonsignorA.Lang'meadwasthecelebrant,assistedbyRev.P.CunninghamandRev.R.Kelly.
MembersoftheSociety thenmetinStMary'shall topartakeofanafternoon, tea,preparedbywivesand friendsofmembersofthe Society.
Aftertea,abusinessmeetingwasheldinthetheatretteoftheChristianBrothers'College,Leederville. Thiswaspreqedoverby thepresidentofthecentral council.
Followingacknowledge-
mentsbythepresident,the meetingwasaddresedbythe Rev.F.Dillon,managerof theRecorddiocesannewspaper.FatherDillonspoke ofplanstoincreasethecirculationoftheRecord,which involvesthemembersofthe Society,whohandlethe salesinmanyparishes.
Reportsfollowed!ofvariousspecialworksofthe Society,theiryouthhostel,
theKimberleyMissionAppeal,CamillusHousenight shelterandshipvisitation. Thislatterreportwaswell preparedandworthyof specialmention.Itwaswell receivedbythemembers.
Themeetingclosedlatein theafternoonwiththanks extendedtoallfortheir helpandparticipationinthe conductoftheFestival Meeting.
BoyScoutsofSt.DonBoscoSecondScarboroughgroup,whenpassingSt.John's schoolintheirsuburbonSaturdaylast,saw smokeissuingfromthebuilding.
Withtypicalresourcefulnesstheysettoworkand hadquelledtheblazewith agardenhosebeforethefire brigadearrived. Itwassubsequentlyascertainedthatvandals-probablychildren-hadbroken intotheschoolandstarted thefire.
Damage,estimatedat £100,wascausedtolibrary andexercisebooks,maps andcurtains.Heatcracked fourwindowpanes.
Afterthefirehadbeen putout,thescoutsaidedby theDominican Sisters, andY.C.W.memberscleaned themess. Candlesnearthebookshelveshadbeenlitbythe vandals. Matchesfound scatteredinanotherclassroomindicatedthatanattempthadbeenmadeto lightasecondfire. ThePerthCriminalInvestigationBranchisinvestigatingtheoutbreak.
HasProvisionForChurchSites
AgrantoflandforthebuildingofaCatholicChurchhasbeenincludedinthereligious centreofParadiseCity,theES-million,460acreprojectwhichisbeingbuiltatSurfers' Paradise.
Manresponsibleforthis tremendousproject,Mr. BruceSmall,setasidethree acresforareligiouscentre, andwhenhecharged1)r. KarlLangerwiththemammothtaskofblue-printing ParadiseCity,heaskedhim togroupthehousesofworshiparoundatree-shaded squarethatwouldcontain anornamentalpool.
Incarryingouthiscommission,Dr.Langersaid thatnowhereelsein'the worldhadheexperienced theCatholic,Jewishand Protestantfaithsmutually sharingconsecratedground, aswasproposedinParadise City.Hesaidthisharmoniousnoteauguredwellforthe City'sfuture.

Geneva:Morethan50milliondollarshas beencontributedinthelastlost12months totheWorldRefugeeYearcampaign,the U.N.EconomicandSocialCouncilmeeting herehasbeentold.

ThepictureoftheMother ofPerpetualSuccourveneratedatthemarbleshrine intheMonasteryChurchis anauthenticcopyofthe originalmiraculouspicturewhichisthecentreof world-widedevotion.Expertshavetestifiedthat thefirstpictureissomethinglikesevenhundred yearsold.Itcamefrom theislandofCreteandis nowenshrinedoverthe highaltarofthechurchof St.AlphonsusintheVia Merualana,Rome.
Awell-documentedtraditionclaimsthatOurLady herselfgavethetitletothe picture,callingherself"Holy MaryofPerpetualSuccour." Itisacurioustrickofhistorythatthechainsshould behousedinachurchcontainingamasterpieceof Michaelangelo.
Atleastnineoutoftenvisitorswhomakethetrip totheChurchofSanPietroinVincoliareintenton seeingnotthechains,butthemagnificentstatueof MosesthatMichaelangelocarvedintheearly16th century.
Thestatueisconsideredtobeoneofthemostpowerfulandcommandingworksofartintheworld.Itwas carvedaspartofthefuneralmonumentforthetombof PopeJuliusIIin1513.Themonumentwasnevercompletedbecauseofvariousobstacles,andMichaelangelo himselfcalledtheuncompletedwork"thetragedyof sculpture."
Whetheritwasatragedyoratriumph,thereislittle doubtthatMoseshasovershadowedtheironchainsthat havebeenenshrinedinthechurchsince440A.D.

Therearetwoseparatesetsofchains.Onesetis reputedtobethechainsthatboundSt.Peterwhilehe wasimprisonedintheMamertinePrisoninRome.The other,believedtobethosethatheldPeterprisonerin Jerusalem,weregiventotheEmpressbyhermother.
Onechainhas23links,withanironringattached; theotherhas11links.Absolutecertitudeconcerning theauthenticityofthechains'originsisnotpossible aftersomanycenturies.TheItalianEcclesiastical Dictionaryreferstothemasthe"presumed"chainsof thePrinceofthe.Apostles.
Nevertheless,thehistoryofthechainshasbeenfairly clearsincethefifthcentury,andtheyhavebeenamong Rome'smostpersonalmemoriesofSt.Peter.
Thechainsarekeptunderthemainaltar,inabronze reliquarywithcrystalsides.Formerly,theywerenot exposedtothepublicexceptontheFeastofSt.Peter's Chains.Inrecentyears,however,thereliquaryhas beenexposedfrequentlybecauseofthegreatinfluxof tourists.

Thelastconcertofthe SocietaCorelliwasthe greatestofthethree,startingwithCorelli'sbestknownwork,theChristmasConcerto.Whythis particularoneiscalledthe ChristmasConcerto,when hewroteseveralforplayingatChristmas,Icannot say.Inthe18thcentury theseconcertiwereplayed duringMassandthelovely Pastoraleendingthisconcertoreflectsthejoyof Christmasinamanner whichhasmadeitapopularfavouriteeversince.
AVivaldiviolinconcerto inAMajorfollowedand againImarvelledequallyat thebrillianceofVivaldiand thebrillianceoftheplaying. Foronce,however,Vivaldi didnottakethehonoursof theevening,thisbeingleft forBoccherini,although therewaslittletochoosebetweenthefirstthreeitems ontheprogramme.
WithBoccherini'sBFlat MajorCelloConcerto,we enteredanentirelydifferent country,separatedfromVivaldibythethreegreat mountainrangesofBach, whoendedpolyphonyby raisingittoperfection; Haydn,whobanishedthe continuo,andMozart,who inventedthevirtuosoconcerto.ForthoughVivaldi andBoccherinibothcalled theseworksconcerti,they arequitedifferentkindsof work.Toplaythesolopart, SilvanaZuccarinisatinthe middleoftheorchestraand thatwassignificant,forfrom thethirdbar,thecellowas incommand,asinmost modernconcerti.Shutting hiseyestoexcludeeverythingbutthemusic,Zuccariniplayedinamanner whichcouldhardlybebetteredbyStarkosorCasalsandheisstillaveryyoung man.Theinstrumentaltone hadarichvelvetyquality broughtoutpoeticallybya superbtechnique.
Aftertheintervalcamea delightfulconcertobyDuranteandtheconcertended withSt.Paul'sSuiteby Hoist.Althoughthishas beenplayedmanytimesin Perth,ithasneverbeenperformedwithsuchverveand elan.
Imustendwithatribute totheSocietaCorelli. I expectedthemtobegood; intheeventIcouldfind nothingwhatsoevertocriticiseintheirperformances. Notonlydideveryplayer playtoperfection,notonly wastheirtimingimpeccable, inspiteofhavingnoconductor,butaboveallitwas theinterpretationandsense ofstylewhichsetthem apart.
Unfortunately,thepoor attendancesattheconcerts clearlyshowedthatthe peopleofPertharenotyet readyforsuchgreatartists. Thesmallminoritywhich didgowasextremelyenthusiasticandIliketothink thattheirfrenziedapplause wassomeconsolationtothe players-Amadeus.
