Oneofthemostremarkablemissionary careersinthiscountryclosedonJuly12with thedeathinSydneyofBishopFrancisXavier Gsell,M.S.C.,formerBishopofDerwin,at theageof87years.
BorninAlsace-Lorraine in1873,thedeceased BishopenteredtheMissionariesoftheSacred Heart.
HewassenttoAustralia asayoungpriestof24years andforthreeYearstaught dogmatictheologyandscripturetotheseminariansof hiscongregationatKensington,Sydney.
Volunteeringforthemissions,he.waspostedtoPort Moresbyin1900.When,in 1906,theareawasentrusted totheMissionariesofthe SacredHeart,FatherGsell wassest4toDarwinasAdminstratorApostolic. Hisfirstinterestwasin educationandwithtwo Brotherswhomhehad broughtfromNewGuinea, hehelpedbuildaconvent.
Tothis,threeyearsafter hisarrival,cametheSisters oftheMissionariesofOur LadyoftheSacredHeart.
Ofequalconcernwerethe aborigineswhosemiserable triballawsonmarriagedistressedhim.
Youngnativegirlswere betrothedatbirthtoold men.Afterintensivestudy oftriballawandcustoms, FatherGsellevolvedaplan toliberatethegirls.
Undernativelawitwas possibleto"purchase"wives. FatherGsellenteredinto thebargaining.
Withtea,flour,sugar,etc., he"purchased"younggirls fromtheirprospectivehusbandsandsettledthemat theBathurstIslandMission, whichheestablished60 milesnorthofDarwinin 1911.
Herethegirlswerefree tomarryoftheirownchoice inlateryears.Asaresult, thenativepopulationceased todecline.
Itisnotcertainhowmany youngnativegirlswere "purchased,"butBishop Gsellgotthetitleof"The Bishopwith150wives."
Presidingoverthelargest bishopricintheworldand theoldestinAustralia,extiptiding1,000milessouth VieyendAliceSprings,and includingThursdayIsland, BishopGselltravelledfor days-byhorse,camel,canoe andonfoot-toreachoutlyingdistricts.
Inthemiddleseventies, thepopulationoftheentire territorynumberedscarcely twothousand.
By1919,however,ithad soincreasedinDarwinitselfthatitbecamenecessary toaddanewsanctuaryand transeptstoSt.Mary's Church.
Inthesameyearacyclone practicallywipedout BathurstIslandMission.All thebuildingshadtohere. erected.
In1938FatherGsellwas namedandconsecrated BishopofDarwin.
February19,1942,sawthe firstbombsdroppedonAustraliansoil-atDarwin.In theensuing18monthsthere were65air-raids.
St.Mary'sChurchwasextensivelydamaged,windowless,withroofandwalls piercedwithshrapnel.
Forallthatthehighaltar
andBishop'sthronewere damaged,thechurchremainedopenallthroughthe waryears. Oftenasmanyastwenty Masseswereofferedthereon aSunday-morning,afternoonandevening.
Worshippersofmanynationalitiesfilleditspews. British,AmericanandDutch servicemenexclusivelycomprisedthecongregation.
Asaresultofthetaxon accommodation,American Armyengineersvoluntarily enlargedthenave,which addedtothesize,butnot thebeautyofSt.Mary's.
Theciviliansreturned afterthewarandavigorous parochiallifewasrevived. By1946thepopulationwas 5,000.
Twonewchapels,convertedfromarmyhuts,were openedtoservethesettlementsofNightcliffand Parap. In1935BishopGsellhad receivedtheO.B.E.farhis workamongtheDarwin aborigines.
In1946,theyearofhis goldenjubileeasapriest,he revisitedhishomeland.
Inthesameyearthe CommonwealthGovernment resumedabsolutely90 squaremilesoflandaround Darwin,includingallfreeholdtitlesofthearea.
Nomorefreeholdtitles wouldbegrantedtoanyone. Theonlytitletolandtenure wouldbea99-yearleasehold.
BythisBilltheCatholic ChurchofDarwinwould havebeendeprivedofallits freeholdpropertyanddeniedtherighttoacquireany otherfreeholdpropertyin itsplace. BishopGsellprotested vigorouslyagainsttheinjusticeandasaresultofhis sustainedoppositionthe
LateBishopGsell measurewasdrePPod Thisspiritoffortitudeand resolutioncharacterised BishopGseli'sentiremissionarycareer. Forexample,helaboured for15yearstowintheconfidenceoftheBathurst Islandnativesandtoattract themtoChristianity.
Attheendofthattimehe couldclaimonlyahundred baptisms,mostlyadministeredtodyingnatives.
In1948,attheageof71 years,BishopGselllaid downtheburdensofoffice andretiredtoSydney.
Forhismissionaryservic,., intheoutbackBishopGsell in1952receivedfromthe FrenchGovernmentthe LegionofHonour.
Replyingtoanaddressof welcomeonhisreturnto DarwininJuly,1948,after avisittoEurope,Bishop Gsellsaid:"Ifmywishis satisfied,itwillbeinthe NorthernTerritorythatI willdie,fortheNorthern Territoryismyhomeand hasbeenforfortyyears.
IhopethatmyLord willgrantthatIlaydown mylifehere."
SuchwasnotGod'swill, butBishopGsellhaswritten anindeliblechapterinour missionaryhistory.
ThenewCathedralrising inDarwinwillbehismemorial,aswellastheloveand gratitudeinhundredsof nativehearts.

WhenalleyesareonAfricanowadays,itisinterestingtotakeaglimpseofsomepartsof itasitwas300yearsago.St.VincentdePaul'sintroductiontothatcontinentisdescribed inaletterofhiswrittenin1607toafriendinhisnativeplaceofDax,inthesouthof France.
VincenthadbeenreturningbyshipfromMarseilles toNarbonne,ontheMediterranean,inagloriousJuly summer,when"GodpermittedthreeTurkishbrigantines(swiftsingle-sail craft)tofallonusandattackussovigorouslythat twoorthreeofourmen werekilledandalltherest wounded;evenImyselfreceivedanarrowwoundthat willservemeasabarometerfortherestofmy life theyfirstputus inchains,havingroughly dressedourinjuries,and wenttheirway,committing athousandrobberies.

Thecaptiveswerebought forlabourinthequarries ofmarble,asrowersinthe galleys,orforfarmworkers,asarule.Vincentwas firstsoldtoafisherman, butashecouldnotstand thesea,hewasresoldafter twomonthstoanoldalchemistwhowasengaged intryingtoturnbaser metalsintomorevaluable ones;hisprofitfromhisexperimentshegavetothe poor.
Vincent,astrongyoung manof26,hadtokeephis dozenfurnacesatfullheat forhim.Theoldmanwas alsodabblinginmedicine andtricksofmagic;hepromisedVincentallhisknowledgeandskill,withenormouswealth,ifhewould becomeaMohammedan. ButVincentwasstrongin hisFaith,andalsoinhis hope.
"Godalwaysgavemea firmconvictionthatIshould escape,becauseoftheceaselessprayersIofferedto HimandtotheBlessedVirginMary,throughwhose soleintercessionIfirmly believeIgotmyfreedom."
Meantimetheoldalchemistdied,bequeathing Vincenttohisnephew,who soonsoldhimtooneWilliamGautier,arenegade Frenchpriest,whohadbeen capturedandgainedhis libertybytakingtheturban andbecomingaMohammedan;helivedinthemountainregionswiththree wives.
Vincenttilledthebarren soilforhim,intheappaling heat,wherethemaster's wivescametoseehimat work,charmedbyhisyouth, hisgoodmannersandconversation,andbyhissinging.Oneofthem,the Mohammedan,wassoaffectedbyhischantingofthe PsalmsandhymnstoOur Lady,likethe"Hail,Holy Queen,"thatshereproached herhusbandforhaving givenupsuchabeautiful religion.
ShewasGod'sagentto movehimtoseehisevil state,andwithVincenthe plannedtoreturntohisreligionandtoescape.Ten monthslater,theymadethe crossingtoFranceina smallskiff,atgreatrisk.

Duringthesetwoyearsof servitudenothingwasdone onVincent'sbehalftoseek hisliberation;heceasedto beafreemanandapriest, andwaslefttohisownwits tofindhisrelease;moreover,therewasnospiritual careorhelpforhim.There wereover7,000otherslaves inTunisdistrictatthetime, capturedonthehighseas andcoastsoftheMediterranean,forwhomlittlerescueworkwasdone.
Inthe13thcenturySaints PeterofNolaandRaymond ofPenaforthadfounded theirreligiousOrdersfor redeemingslaves,themembersofwhichwouldtake theplaceofslaveswhen necessary.Theiractivity wasgreatlyreducedbythis time;inanycase,howcould theycopewithsuchnumbers?
Theforsakenconditionof thesethousandsofChristiansmusthavebeenadaggerinthekindlyheartof St.Vincent;knowingofso manyinthedireststraits, spiritualandmaterial,withoutbeingabletogivethem anysuccour.
Howeverthiswasnothis business;otherswerechargedwithit:theHolySeewas inconstantnegotiationwith theSultanofTurkey,the Overlordoftheseareas,and othergovernmentshadtheir officialsattendingtothe situationintheirownway.
Itwas1645-38years afterhisownescape-beforeVincenttookanypublic partinthecareofthese prisoners.Indeedthefact ofhisownslave-lifewas riotknownuntil1658,two yearsbeforehisdeath, whentheletterquoted abovewasrecovered.Itis oneofthemysteriesofhis life,whyheconcealedthis episode.
Hehadhundredsofoccasionstogivehisfirsthand knowledgeoftheconditions whenhewassendinghis missionariesthere,and whenhewasurgingthe causeofthecaptives,and whenhewaswelcoming homesomeofthemenwho hadbeenredeemed;buthe neversaid:"WhenIwas inTunis,"or"WhenIwas intheslave-market"or"I remembertheprivationswe hadinourslave-days."

Inanycasethereisno doubthefeltintenselyfor thewelfareofthecaptives, andthatiswhy,whenKing LouisXIIIaskedhim,in 1643,tosendsomepriests forthespiritualandcorporalcareoftheChristian slaves,hegladlyagreed.
Hefirstarrangedanew methodofapproachforhis missionaries. Theonly priestsallowedbytheMoslemswerethoseincaptivity,againstwhomallsorts ofattractionstoapostasy wereemployed.
ConsulsExperiment
ButbytreatytheNational Consulscouldhaveachaplain.ThroughthegenerosityoftheDuchessofAiguillononceagain,VincentpurchasedtherighttonominatetheFrenchConsulsto AlgiersandTunis;there were21,000slavesinthese areas.
In1645hesentalawyer asConsultoTunis,and withhimFatherJulian Guerinandalaybrother. Thepriestlabouredamong thecampsandhutments,as wellasforthecrewsofthe galleys,where300rowers wouldbeineachship,at theportofBizerta.
After18months'toil, FatherGuerindied,andhis postwastakenbyFather JohnleVacher,whowasalreadyhisassistantamong theplaguestricken.The ill-willoftheDey,thelocal ruler,banishedtheConsul, andFatherleVacherhad toassumethatoffice.He wasalsonamedVicarGeneralofthedioceseofAlgiers.
AsConsulhewassubjectedtomanyfalseaccusations bytheDey,washeldresponsibleforthefailuresof anyFrenchmantomeethis debtsorpromisesorcontracts.Forthesehewas severaltimesimprisoned, torturedbyrepeatedbastinadoesorbeatingsofthe solesofhisfeet,andgiven thefingertreatment,ofhavingsteelneedlesdrivenin underthenails.Hewasthe scapegoatforanycrimethe Deyfelthadbeencommittedagainsthim.
Withinsandoutsoffavour,FatherleVachercarriedonhisapostolatefor 35years,until1683,when, onJuly29,hewasstoodat themouthofacannon,the matchwasappliedtothe powder,andtheballblastedhisbodyintoathousand piecesovertheseashore.

Vincentconsoledandfortifiedhisenvoysintheir difficulttasks:hereminded themoftheexamplethey hadofChristgivingHis lifeinredemptionforus all;heurgedthemtobe mildandgentle,patientand prudent,andtobewareof excessofzeal.
"Goodworksareoften fast.WhatGodproducesis spoiledbecausewegotoo broughtaboutalmostofitself,withoutourthinking aboutit.Thereisnotan AngelorSaintinHeaven whowouldnotenvyyou thisgoodfortune.IfIwere permittedIwouldenvyyou myself.Seldomisanygood donewithoutsuffering."

Themissionariesarrangedchapelsinthebaracks andinthehulks.Solemn MasswassungonSundays andFeasts;theBlessedSacramentwasreserved,the FortyHours'devotionsand theCorpusChristiprocessionwereheld. Bybuyingtheirfreedom theywereabletosecure helpersamongthepriestslaves.Renegadeswere broughtback,sometimesto martyrdom.Turkswere convertedaswellasmany Protestants,someofthem English.
Aspecialfruitoftheir interventionwastheliberationofmanyfromcaptivity. Womenandchildrenand Nuns,capturedinraids alongtheMediterranean coast,werebroughtbackfor 300crownseach.Uptill thetimeofSt.Vincent's deathin1660,morethan 4,200hadbeenredeemedby paymentofaprice.
Ahousehadbeenbought atMarseillesbytheDuchessofAiguillonasaclearing-stationforthese.RelativesofaparticularcaptivesentmoneyforhisreleasetoSt.LazarusinParis; itandtheparticularsabout thepersonweresentto MarseillestotheVincentiansthere,andtheywere transmittedtotheConsuls inBarbary,andinduetime theransomedcamehome throughMarseilles.
TheLadiesoftheConfraternityofCharitywere,of course,theagentsfordonatingandcollectingother sumsforthebenefitof slaveswhohadnobodyto careforthem.TheMarseilleshousewasalsoa post-officeforlettersfor thecaptivestoandfrom theirfamilies.
Whencalledtothework, St.Vincenthaddonemagnificentlytoremedythesad stateoftheslaves.Inhis lastyearshewaspromoting anavalassaultonthe pirates'headquartersbythe FrenchFleet.ItwasattemptedjustafterVincent's deathbytheChevalierPaul with40ships,in1660,but itfailedbecauseoftheadverseweather.
Howeverthemissionary campaignbegunbySt.Vincentcontinued,withsome interuptions,tillthepresent timeamongthepeopleof TunisiaandAlgeria.The Vincentiansaretherenow conductingfourMajorSeminariesalongtheBarbary
AnothercornerofAfrica isofpresentinterestbecauseitisjust100years sincethedeaththereon July31ofBlessedJustinde Jacobis,anItalianVincentianandapostleofAbyssinia.
Attheageof39hewas senttoEthiopiabyPope GregoryXVI.Thiscountry ofseveralmillionpeople hadreceivedtheGospelin thefourthcentury,butlater theirFaithhadbeenpoisonedbyheresy,denyingthe existenceofthetwonatures, divineandhuman,inOur Lord-denyingthatHe wasbothGodandMan.
Thoughthemonasteries andchurcheswerevery numerous,andstillare,the nativesweregenerallymore superstitiousthanreligious, andtheirmoralstandards werelow,andstillare.
FatherdeJacobismade veryslowprogressamong thembecausetheCoptic schismaticalBishopand clergywereveryhostile andtheyhadthecontrolof theEmperorsaswell.

Hetravelledextensively, mostlyonfoot,overdesert, mountainsandplains,and graduallyestablishedsome Catholiccommunities.
Heconvertedsomeofthe hereticalpriests,andtrainedothernativesforordination.Hissuccessbrought moreopposition;someofhis priestswereimprisoned,includingAbbe Ghebre Michael,aconvertnative priest,whowasproclaimed amartyrbecauseofthe torturesheenduredforthe Faith.
FatherdeJacobiswas namedVicarApostolicof Ethiopiaandconsecrated Bishop,whichwastheoccasionformoreintensepersecution.Hewasimprisonedandexpelledfromthe country,withinstructions
giventhatheshouldbe killed. Hisguardsallowedhim toescape,andhefearlessly returnedtohisVicariateto continuehiswanderings amonghispeopleuntilhe wasforcedtoexileagain. After22yearsofmuch frustrationandintermittent success(therewereabout 12,000Catholicsnowinhis territory)ofsevereliving andactivepersecution,havingobtainedaCoadjutor Bishoptocontinuehisapostolate,hewentbackintohis territory,exhausted,sick anddying.
Atastageofthejourney inthescorchingheatof summer,hesatdownbythe roadsideintheshadeofa deadtreetrunk,unableto goanyfurther.Hemade hisConfessionandreceived ExtremeUnction,andafter afewwordstoexhorthis followerstounionand charity,andtobethelight ofAbyssinia,helayonthe groundandgavebackhis soultohisCreator,expiring thereinthebushonJuly 31,1869.
Hewasdeclaredtobe amongtheBlessedin1939, andfromhisplacein Heavencontinueshiscare oftheChurchofEthiopia, wherehisconfreresareengagednowinschoolsand missionsfortheAbyssinian people.

WhentheCaptainhadskilfullymanoeuvredtheship alongsidethelittleL-shapedjetty,wecouldseethatthe shipprojectedforeandaftbeyondthelimitsofits minatureloadingsection.
Thetownwasstillnearlytwomilesaway.Atfirst sightfromthedeckthejettyseemedtorunrightup tothetowninonestraightline.Actually,however,the jettyisonlysome150yardslong,thenabuilt-upcausewaycarriesonandspanstheinterveninggapacross mudflatsandmangrovestotheedgeofthetown.
Allaround,asyougazeshorewards,youseeamazing mirages,completewithdeceptivetreereffections.The townseemstobeencircledbylagoons-buttheyare phantomlagoons.
Thetownsiteisalittletongueofsolidgroundcoming rightdowntotheedgeofthemudflats,whichrestrict thebuildingareaonthreesides.Atkingtides,the waterlapswithinastone'sthrowofthePorthoteland otherbuildings.
Alongonesideofthejettystretchesanarrowrace forloadingcattleintoshipsfromholdingyardsatthe baseofthejetty.Atoff-timesthesesameyardsdoduty asparkingareasforvehiclesmeetingships.
ItwasherethatFatherJ.Kearney,S.C.A.,thepriest inchargeatDerby,tookme,afterwehadmetonthe jetty,tojoinhiscarforarunuptown.

Tothevisitor,themoststrikingfeatureaboutDerby isthenumberofgrotesquelyshapedBoab(ormore correctlyBoabab)trees,standinginweirdpostures scatteredalongitstwowide,parallelmainstreets.Their massiveelephantinetrunksbearfancifulresemblanceto bowls,bottlesandvasesofvariousstrangedesigns.
Agroupofthreeorfourquiteclosetogetherpresent apicturesquecruet-standeffect.Notwoexactlyalike insizeorpattern,theygivesuchanovelatmosphere tothestreets,thatDerbyissometimesreferredtoas "BoabTown,"anditsresidentsas"Boabites."Ofcourse, BroomeandWyndhamhavetheirBoabstoo,butnotin suchprofusionorvariety.
ThebranchesoftheBoabseemtoholdaspecial fascinationforscreechingcockatoosandgalahs.Evenly dispersedthroughthefoliageastheyoftenare,the colouredplumageofthebirdscreatestheilllusionof weirdbloomsuponthetrees.
Onestorelingersinsplendidisolationattheoriginal townsite,amileandahalfinland.Itdoesabrisktrade as"TheFirstandLastStore"forincomingandoutgoing stationpeople.
CentreOfCattle,Sheep,Wool
AcoupleofmilesfurtheronatMyall'sbore,where thedroversholdtheirmobsofcattleawaitingshipment, thereisthelongestcattletroughinAustralia.lklearly 150yardsinlength,andfilledwithwaterfromapermanentlyflowingbore,itiscapableofwatering1,000 headofcattle.
OnthetrunkofanearbyBoabtreehangsatelephone usedbydroverstopickupinstructionsaboutloading timefromtownagents.Ashortdistanceawayfromthe borewesawareallymagnificentspecimenofBoab.It standslikeagiganticbowlwithahollowinteriorand wasusedbyKimberleypolicemenintheearlydaysas alock-upforaboriginalprisoners.Itis50feetincircumferenceandtheinterioris12feetindiameter withnaturalventilationopeningsintheroof18feetup. Youcanenterbyanelongatedopening,whichserved asthedoor.Asmayasadozenprisonersaresaidto havespentthenightwithin.Itispopularlyknownas "ThePrisonTree."
ThereisanotherfamousPrisonTreeaboutanhour's runoutofWyndhamupthevalleyoftheKingRiver near"ThePool,"fromwhichthetown'swatersupply comes.IfIrememberrightly-Ididnotvisititonthis trip-itscircumferenceissmallerthantheDerbyPrison Tree,somewhereabout 't,thoughiti'alter,with ahigherprisonroofandaaornedwithmoleexuberant andmoredistortedbranches.Ithasawindowintothe prisonafewfeetfromtheground.
TowardsMyall'sBoreconvergestockroutesfromthe hinterland,fromvaststationsofbothcattleandsheep, fromLiveringa,Noonkanbah,FossilDowns,Glenroy, EllendaleandTablelands,tomentionbutafew,inand overtherangestoHallsCreek.
ForthewholeoftheWestKimberleys,Derbyisthe
port,withstoresofallkindsgoinginward,andcattle, sheepandwoolcomingoutward.Itisamazingthe quantitiesofcargothatpasstoandfromalongthelittle L-shapedjetty,consideringitsverylimitedhandling facilities.
Toallowshipstoberthatlowtide,thejettyinits presentpositionwouldhavetobeextendedseawardfor twoandhalfmiles.Yearsago,analternativesiteat BlackRocks,offPointTorment,some20milesdistant, wasmooted,buttherehasbeennodecisionaboutthe matteryet.
WithFatherKearney,Ivisitedthechurch,presbytery,conventandschool,situatedtogetherona centralspaciousblockoppositethehospital.Afew hundredyardsfurtheronisthe100-bedNativeHospital,staffedbyfiveSistersofSt.JohnofGod.Besides servingtheneedsofthetown,thehospitalcaresfor nativepatientsflowninbytheFlyingDoctorService fromsheepandcattlestationsthroughouttheKimberleys.
Towardstheoutskirtsofthetownwevisitedan impressive,modern,well-appointedhostel,whichwas completedlastyear.Hereareboardingfacilitiesfor somefiftyboysandgirls,whocomeinfromthehinterlandtoattendschoolatDerby.
HostelForNativeChildren
Afewmonthsbeforethehostelwasduetoopen,from Derby,England,camealetteraddressedto"TheParish Priest,Derby,Australia."Mr.Jordan,thewriterof theletter,withhiswifeandthreechildren,wishedto migratefromEngland,andthoughthecouldnotdo betterthanv:ritetothetownofthesamespellingin Australia.
IdonotknowwhetherherealisedthattheEnglish DerbyandtheAustralianDerbyhavelittleincommon, savethespellingoftheirnames.Eventhepronunciations,ofcourse,arequitedifferent!Howeverthatmay be,whenFatherKearneyrepliedofferinghimthe managementofSt.Joseph'sHostel,bothMr.Jordan andhiswifewereenthusiastic.Theformalitiesofthe immigrationprocesswerespeededup,sothatMr.and Mrs.Jordanarrivedthedaybeforethescheduleddate ofopeningforthehostel',andhavemadeawonderful successofitsfirstyearofoperation.
Drivingonafurthertenmilesacrossthetidalflats, inthedirectionofPointTorment,wecametotheDerby Leprosarium,alarge,long-establishedinstitutionwith awell-deservedreputation.Thegeneralmanagement isunderGovernmentadministrationandthehospital, wherethepatientsreceivethemosteffectiveand modernmethodsoftreatment,isstaffedbytheSisters ofSt.JohnofGod.
ArrivingintimeforBenediction,weheardthe patients'choirrenderthehymns,inbeautifulharmonisedchanting.Thechoiristrainedbyveterannurse, MotherAlphonsus,M.B.E.,whoisalsotheinspiration ofthefamousstringedorchestraattheLeprosarium.At onetimeboastinguptothirtymembers,nowdueto recentdischargesitissomewhatreducedinstrength. ThechapelaltarisimpressivelyadornedwithEucharisticsymbolsofinlaidpearlshell.
Duetomoreeffectivetreatment,thein-patientsnow numberlessthantwohundred.Irememberonmylast visitsomeyearsago,thenumberwasoverthethreehundredmark.Twenty-fivepatientsweredischarged duringthelasttwelvemonths.Ofcourse,discharged patientsareregularlychecked,andfromtimetotime someneedtobere-admitted.
Afterthisveryinterestingandenjoyabletimeashore, FatherKearneycamebackwithmetothewharfto meetsomepassengersfromWyndhamwhomheknew.
'Passingonthewaytherecentlyopenedfreshwater swimmingpoolwhichisprovingaboontothetown,I couldseeitwasespeciallyrelishedbythechildren.
OnleavingtheshipIhaddescendedthegangway frompromenadedecktojettysome15or20feetbelow, forathightidethesealevelisalmostuptotheplatformofthejetty.
Now,onreturningsixhourslater,wediscoveredthat eventheupperdeckhaddescendedbelowthejetty levelandwehadtoclimbdownthegangwaytogoon deckfromthejetty.
DuringthefewhoursIwasashore,thetidehadfallen 30feet(themaximumrangeis34feet)andtheship wassittinghighanddryonthesoftmudoftheharbour bed,thewaterhavingrecededsomehundredyards beyondtheh^eofthejetty.

RacesIntermixInBroome
OurstayinBroomewastobeaverybriefone,just longenoughtotakeonandputoffpassengers,andso permitustosailoutagainonthesametide.
AsyouenterRoebuckBaybyroundingEntrance Point,thetownshipimmediatelycomesintoviewonthe leewardsideofthepromontory,spreadinguptothe mouthofDampierCreek,andovertheneighbouring pinksanddunes.
Thelong,narrowjettyjutsoutinasoutherlydirectionforabouthalfamile.Thenorthboundsistership "Koolama"wasalreadyberthed,dischargingcargoon onesideofthejettywhenwecamealongsideatslack tidedirectlyoppositeher,withonlythewharfwidth of'aboutthirtyfeetbetween.
ItwasalmosttenyearssinceIlastvisitedBroome, andonthatoccasionIwastravellingbyair.Nogreat changeshadtakenplacesincethen.Thepopulationhas perhapsdecreasedalittle,beingnowataboutthe 1,700mark,butisstillmadeupofagreatmixturesof races-Filipinos,Malays,Koepangurs,Japanese,Chinese,Afghansareallrepresented.
Broome'sonegreatinterestismother-of-pearlshell,
buttheindustryhasneverbuiltuptoitspre-warlevel. Thepearlfleetnowcomprisesabouttwentyluggers, whereasatonetimein"theTwenties"therewereas manyas30luggersinthefleet.Thehalf-dozenmaster pearlers,whoresideinthetown,nowemployabout300 menasagainst2,000thattheindustryoncerequired. Besidestheworkontheluggers,theactualdiving operations,thereisthelessglamoroussideoftheindustry,thesortingoftheshellintovariousgrades.This isdoneinlargegalvanisedironsheds.Theshellis broughtinfromtheluggersinbagsandemptiedinto largeheaps.Thesortersexamineeachshellfromthe heapsandtossitintooneoffivebinsmarked:"Extra heavy,heavy,medium,smalland'chicken.'"Theshells ofvariousgradesarelaterpackedintowoodencasesfor despatchingtooverseasbuyers.
ThereisoneotherindustryinBroomecentredaround asmallprivatelyowned,Government-subsidisedmeatworks,establishedin1945.Asonly7,000headofcattle areslaughteredduringtheseason,itissmallincomparisonwiththemeatworksatWyndham,wheresome 30.000beastsarehandledeachyearduringthe16-week season.Themajorityofthelivecattlecometothe Broomemeatworksinlargetrucks,
ThereislittlehinterlandtoBroomeandnocattleare exportedonthehoof,asmostofthelargecattlestations aretothenorthontheoppositesideoftheFitzroyRiver.
Thetownisreceivingquiteaboostaepresentasthe feederportforTalgarno,situated150milestothesoutheast.TalgarnowillbetheterminaloftheWoomera rocketrange.TheCommonwealthGovernmentis spendingaconsiderablesuminbuildingamodern townshipwithallamenities,inadditiontothetechnical installationsassociatedwiththeproject.
ThreeImportantMissionCentres
InthemainstreetofBroomeisamonument,inthe formofagranitesea-chest,commemoratingthevisitof WilliamDampiertotheWestCoastin1688,ona privatelyownedshipnamed"Cygnet."He.nodoubt, foundahaveninthecreekthatbearshisname.
AtBroomeistheresidenceofHisLordshipBishop Jobst,D.D.,S.A.C.,VicarApostolicoftheKimberleys. BishopJobsttoldmethatforthefirstsixmonthsafter hisarrivalintheKimberleys,hespentnomorethan threeweeksathisheadquarters,sooccupiedwashein coveringthelongdistancesandvisitingthescattered outpostsofhisvastvicariate.Overtheroadfromthe churchandpresbytery,theSistersofSt.JohnofGod havealargeconvent,andconductaschooland orphanage.
Therearealsothreeimportantmissionstationsout fromBroome.Eighty alongthecoasttotheNortn isBeagleBay,foundedbyBishopGibneyin1890,and wellknownforitsmuchadmired,magnificentpearlshellinlaidaltar.FortymilesfurthernorthisLombadina,andonehundredmilestothesouththemore recentlyestablishedLaGrange.Agreatdealofde. velopmentworkisneededtoputthesemissionsona soundfooting.
ForsomemonthseachyearMrs.Miller(Mary Durack),wifeofMr.H.C.Miller,DirectoroftheMacRobertsonMillerAirways,makesherhomeatBroome. Atothertimes,withhersixchildren,shelivesatNedlands,aPerthsuburb.ItwasatherNedlandshome thatImetherattheendofmyvoyage.Wespenta mostinterestingeveningdiscussingthepioneering daysoftheKimberleys.Thosegreatdaysshehas describedsoentertaininglyinherbrilliantbook"Kings inGrassCastles." Shetoldmeadelightfulstoryofavisitshemadeto BeagleBayMissionwithhersmallson.
Astheysetoutinthemissiontruck,theladasked her,"Wherearewegoing?" Suitingheranswertotheenquiringmindofherfouryear-old,shereplied,"WearegoingtoGod'splace."

Itdoesnotfollowthatallwhopractisethemwill losetheirsouls.Althoughmistakenintheiridea:, theymaybesincereandconscientiouspeoplewho donotrealisetheirmistake.God,Whoknowshow tooverlookmistakesforwhichwearenotresponsible,canrewardtheirgoodwillwiththegraces necessaryforsalvation.Butiftheydonotrealise itinthisworld,theywillrealiseinthenextworld thattheyowedthosegracestotheredemptivework ofChrist:andthatitisnotbecauseof,butinspite of,theirmistakennon-Christianformsofreligion thattheyhaveattainedtoheaven.
Needlesstosay,noonewhohastheChristian religioncouldbeexcusedfortakingupHinduism, Buddhism,oranyothernon-Christianreligion.

Ontheotherhandyou getafeelingofhappiness whenyouhavecarriedout sometaskgivenyou,even thoughyoudidnotlikedoingifinthebeginning.
Evenwhenyougrowup andstartworkingyouwill havetotakeorders.And sometimesthesearenot givengentlyandwith_love astheyusuallyarebyyour parentsandteachers.

Beforeheevenplayedanote,AlfredoCampoliwon hisaudience,charmingusallwithhiswarmpersonality. IfIprefacemycriticismwithpersonalremarks,these arebynomeansderogatorytotheartist.Onthecontrary,thegreatertheartist,themoreimportanthis personality,for,likearefractingprism,itcoloursthe lightpouringfromthesoulofthecomposer.Musicis unliketheotherarts,inthatitalwaysneedsanintermediary,whoisjustasimportantastheoriginalartist.
Themostremarkablething aboutCampoliplayingthe Mendelssohnconcertowas hisairofanxioussurprise. Althoughhehasplayedit sooftenthathecouldplay itwithhisviolinheldbehindhisback,hehadsometimestheairofasmallboy playinghispartypiece, petuallydelightedwiththe soundsheproducedand leavingusnotquitecertain whetheritwasMendelssohn orhisownabilitythatproducedthatbeautifulsmileat theendofamorethanusuallylyricpassage.
"Lyric"ispreciselythe adjectivetodescribeCampoli'sinterpetration;golden beautyfallinginheavenly cadences,hisphysicalefforts producedeffortlesssoaring, wingedandpoisedlikea seagullinflight.Hewas fittinglyrewtrdedwithuproarious,delightedapplause.
Hisencorewasacomplete contrast;heplayedPaganini'sCapriceNo.20,a fiendishlydifficultpiece, withcompletenonchalance, withtheeyesofeverystring playerintheorchestra,from firstviolinstodoublebasses, lockedhypnoticallyonhim, Theirapplausewaseven mareenthusiasticthanthat oftheaudience.
Theonlyotherwork,apart fromtheFidelioovertureas acurtainraiser,wasMahler'sFourthSymphony, playedhereforthefirsttime asatributetothecentenary ofMahler'sbirth.Musical criticshavesavagedMahler inmuchthesamewayas theyattackedBerlioz.Both havemuchincommon,both beingagreaterinfluencehi orchestrationthaninstyle andbothseekingnewforms ofexpression,particularlyin theuseofgiganticorchestras.
Thissymphonyisunique inthatMahlersoughta Hadynesqueclaritybythe useofsmallforces,aclarity admirablybroughtoutby thelocalorchestralplaying, Thissymphony,too,has

TocomprehendMahler, onemustturntohislife,for allhissymphoniesareautobiographicalandrelatedto hisspirituallife.Hewasa JewishconverttoCatholicismandthetrilogyofthe "Wunderhorn"symphonies, ofwhichthisisthelast, camesoonafterhisconversion.Allofthemwerebased onaromanticanthologyof poetry,entitledDesKnabes Wunderhorn,fromwhich thefourthmovementsongis taken.Thatsongisthe spiritualthemeoftheprecedingmovements,too: viewedthus,theworkhas unity.
Tohearthesymphony, evenwithoutthatforeknowledge,isafascinatingexperience.Beingalyriccomposer,Mahleroftenreveals hisdescentfromSchubert. Thereisnolackofgood tunesandstrongrhythms, but,whereashismaterialis basicallyverysimple,almost naive,itsorganisationis mostcomplex.Heachieves themostunexpectedand beautifuleffects.Atone pointtheleanerplaysaduet withthedeputyleader(the otherviolinsbeing'silent) withtheleaderplayinga violintunedatonehigher. Atanother,thecellosplay thetrebleline,accompanied bytheviolasonthebass, andforthefirsttimeever, Iheardadouble-bassplayingasolo;Ihadneverheard suchaglorioussound.
Allthesame,Ifancythat mostofuswerepuzzledat Mahler'saims.Todepict Heavenasachild'sfairytaleisunderstandableIfit werederisive,asapart,say, ofaSovietanti-Godcampaign,ButMahlerwassincereandsympathetic,there isnodoubtofhisenthusiasticCatholiciity.Oneexplanationisescapismand thereismuchtosupport suchatheory.

SomelittlewhileagoIhappilyreviewedthisauthor's "BoswellandJohnson."Mr.Pearsonhasanexcellent styleofwriting,verydescriptive,withflashesofdry witwhichsometimescatchyouunawares,andhistopic thistimeisevenmoreinterestingandcolourfulthan hislast.
AgrandsonofHenryof Navarre,Charles'career hadjustasmuchadventureinitashisancestor's. Theybothhadtofightfor theirthrone,andinthe daysoftrialandbattle learnedtoknowtheir peopleandtoappreciate trueloyaltybetterthan themonarchswhomcourt etiquetteseparatedfrom themasses.Theyboth foundthemselvesground betweenthemillstonesof thereligiousprejudicesof theirtimes,andended withasenseoftoleration unusualfortheirage. Thereareothersimilarities,ifonedesiredtocarry thecomparisonfurther;they werebothnotorious "womanisers"andcompletelyindifferenttotheopinion oftheiradvisersonthe subjectoftheirpersonal morality,butCharlescanbe forgivenmuchwhenone realisesthecynicismwhich wasbredintohimbyhis longandhumiliatingperiod ofexileandpovertywhen hisresidencehadtobe changedwitheveryshiftof thepoliticalwind.
Finally,theybothbecame Catholics,andalthoughthe motivesofHenrymaybe suspect,Charles'deathbed conversionwastheligical outcomeofapredilectionfor theCatholicFaithwhichwas manifestallthroughhis adultlife,butwhichwasnot strongenoughforhimto riskhishardly-wonthrone forit.
Hemustrankasoneof themostpopularkingsever toruleEngland,andHeskethPearsonhasobviously enjoyedthetaskofrecountingthelifestoryofthe handsomeprincewhose scandalouspredilectionfor theladieswasthetalkof Europe,butwhoneverallowedanyofhismistresses todictatehispolicy.
Perhaps,.inhisadmiration forCharles,theauthordoes alittlelessthanjusticeto hisbrotherJamesbutthatis theonlyweaknessIwould findinthisexcellentbiography.Thedomineering attitudeoftheQueenMother andthetenderaffectionof Charlesforthelittlesister, Minette,whosechildhood fatedidnotallowhimto share,areexcellentlytreat. ed,andthepicturedrawnof Charlesisonewithwhich thereaderwillfeelevery sympathy.
