Followingtherubricsforthistypeofliturgical function,thefirstblessingwasgiventothesiteforthe altarinthenewchurchmarkedbyawoodencross. Havingblessedthesite,HisGrace,accompaniedbyhis DeaconandSub-Deacon,proceededtothepositionof thefoundationstoneandthereblessedthestone,which wasliftedbyasmallcrane.Afterblessingthestone thricewithholywater,HisGrace,usingatrowel,made six(oneforeachfaceofthestone)cross-likeincisions. Whereupon,allreturnedtothealtarsiteandtheLitany oftheSaintswaschanted.

AtitsconclusionHisGrace andhisattendantswent againtothepositionofthe stoneandlaiditinposition inthewall,sayingthewords "InthefaithofJesusChrist wearrangethisfirststonein thisfoundationinthename oftheFatherandofthe SonandoftheHolyGhost (blessingthestonethrice) inorderthattruefaith,the fearofGodandfraternal charitymightflourishhere; andmaythisplacebedestinedforprayerandtothe invokingandpraisingthe NameofthesameJesus ChristOurLord;whowith theFatherandtheHoly SpiritlivesandreignsGod foreverandever.Amen.

HisGrace,thenusingthe trowelandmortar,fixedthe stonefirmlyinthewall.

Theblessingofthewalls followedandthiswascarriedoutbygoinginprocessionaroundtheoutsideperimeterofthebuilding,stoppingthreetimestoblessand pray. Aftertheintoningofthe VeniCreator,HisGrace gaveablessingtoallpresentandeverythingwas preparedfortheofferingof HolyMass.

DoubleTragedy

Inhissermon,Father Nolansaidthattheperiod ofLentremindsusofa doubletragedy.

FirstwerecalltheDeath ofJesusChristforoursalvation.Butwearenotpermittedtoforgetasecond tragedy-therepudiationof GodbyHischosenpeople. Theyhadbeengiventhe taskofmaintainingthetrue Faith,andintheirhistory wefindpagesofthemost gloriousheroismimaginable. YetwhenGodcameamong themtheyrejectedHim,and HeforWhomtheyhadbuilt aTemple"hadnotwhereto layHishead."

Takingashistext"All, bothmenandwomen,with devoutmind,offeredgifts thattheworksmightbe donewhichtheLordhad commanded.AllthechildrenofIsraeldedicated voluntaryofferingstothe Lord"(Exodus),Father Nolanrecalledthatwhile theywerestillinthedesert,

inconformitywithGod's desiretheIsraelitesbuilta tabernacle.Allcontributed whattheypossessed,countingthemselvesprivilegedto makeasacrifice. CenturieslaterDavidconceivedtheideaofbuilding aTemple,butitwasleft tohissonSolomontocarry outthework.Speakingof thededicationofthistemple, FatherNolansaid:"Think howtheveryheart'sblood ofthepeoplewaspoured intothebuildingofthis Templededicatedtotheir God.Theywereproud,so proud-theywerethe holdersoftheTrueFaith. TheybelievedintheTrue God.Godwasdemanding ofthem,andGodwasreceivingwhatHedemanded -theirfaith,theirloyalty,theirgenerosity." Duringtheircaptivity, theydesiredabovealltoreturntotheirhomelandand rebuildtheirTemple.Bya curiousirony,whenthey did,itwasdedicatedbya manwhowasalmosta pagan.Realisingthepeople's faith,hethoughthecould wintheirloyaltybyerecting aTempletoaGodinWhom hedidnotbelieve.Thiswas theTempleinexistencein thetimeofOurLord.He spenthislifetryingtoconvincethechosenpeoplethat HewasGod,buttheywould havenoneofit.Thepeople whohadperformedglorious featsofheroismindefence oftheirfaithinGoddidnot recogniseHimwhenHe cameamongthem,

CallForSacrifice

Wecannotexplainthis irony,butwecanfinda parallelinourownlives, saidFatherNolan."Wecan risetoheightsofheroism, too,andwecansinktothe blackestdepthsofcowardice.Therearemoments whenwedowanttoserve God,andwearereadyeven tolaydownourverylives forGod.Andthereare momentswhenwetoorepudiateGodandwillhave noneofHim,becauseHe requiresofussacrifice.

"Arewepreparedtodo forChristwhatHiscontemporariesrefusedtodo?Are wepreparedtogiveChrist ahome?Aboveall,ayewe preparedtodoeverything inourpowertoerecttoour Godamonumentthatisin keepingwiththeDivine dignity?"

Attimes,saidFather Nolan,wefindourselves thinking:"Couldn'tsomethinglessbegoodenough?" "Whygotosuchtremendous expensewhenthereareso manyotherthingsthat couldbedonewiththe

money?"This,herecalled, wasthecomplaintofJudas, who,seeingthealabaster boxofointmentbroken,exclaimed:"Couldnotthis havebeensoldandgivento thepoor?"Itwasthecomplaintofathief.

"WecanoffertotheDivine Infantsomethingbetterthan amanger,somethingbetter thanacave,"FatherNolan concluded."Wecanoffer boththeDivineInfant,and theMotheruponwhose breastHeisresting,somethingthatwillbeworth while;somethingthatwill bepointedouttofuture generationsastheoffering ofapeoplewhohadFaith, whohadHope,andwhohad adeeploveofGod."

AttheconclusionofHigh Mass,HisGracespoketothe largegatheringofparishioners.Heexpressedsatisfactionthattheceremonyhad beencarriedoutinitsliturgicalentirety.HisGrace congratulatedtheCarmelite Fathersontheircourageous ventureinembarkingon suchagreatexpenditurein anewdistrict.

"Theyknewtheyhadto dosomething,"saidHis Grace."ForyearspastMass hasbeencelebratedinthe localhall,andinthepastsix yearsithasbeencelebrated intheschool.Mass,whether celebratedinaschoolorin ahall,iscelebratedunder veryseriousdisadvantages. Thentheylivedforthepast fouryearsinthisprimitive arrangementhere,butthey nevermurmuredorcomplained.Theylookedforwardtothedaywhenthey wouldhaveaprioryworthy ofthem,wheretheywould beabletocarryouttheir

AttheconclusionofHis Grace'saddress,thePrior, FatherHilary,thankedHis GraceonbehalfoftheCarmeliteFathersandtheparishionersforblessingthe foundationstoneandforhis encouragementtobeginand carryoutthework.

FatherHilaryexplained tothepeoplehowthechurch andtheparishcametobe dedicatedtotheInfant Jesus,expressingthehope thatallparishionerswould takeHimastheirmodeland trytocarrythisspiritofthe Christ-Child,soprevalent atChristmastime,right throughouttheyear.

Between7,000-8,000schoolchildrentogetherwithpriests,brothers,nunsandparents(numberingabout2,500)answeredtheDialogueMassofferedatSubiacoovalonSt.Patrick'sDay.Thechildreninuniform,bearingschoolbanners,presentedamostcolourful spectacleinamarchpastHisGracetheArchbishopwhichoccupied atleastanhour.

PresentwithHisGrace onthedaisforthemarchpastwere:theMostRev. J.J.Rafferty,Auxiliary Bishop,andtheRt..Rev. MonsignoriE.Moss,J.T. McMahon,E.Sullivan,A.T. Langmead,E.Collins,F. O'Connor,J.Hogan,T. LenihanandJ.Bourke.

ThemusicoftheMasswas providedbytheCathedral ChoirconductedbytheRev. P.McCudden.

Masswascelebratedby"Webeseechthee,holy theRev.P.Quinn,D.C.L.,youth,tocomeandwalk andtheRev.E.O'Sullivanoncemoreamongus." preachedthepanegyric, Ithadtakenhimallthose yearstoescapeandnowhe wasbeingaskedtogoback. Itwaslikeaskingaman whohadescapedfromafire togobackinagaininorder torescuesomeoneelse.It waslikeAbrahambeing askedtosacrificehisonly son. That,continuedFather O'Sullivan,wasthebeginningofSt.Patrick'svocation.Hesawthatherewas apeoplewithnoshepherd, andhesawthathewas needed.

FatherO'SullivanpreachedfromthetextofJoel (2:28):"AndIwillpourout myspirituponallmankind, andyoursonsanddaughters willbeprophets;andyour youngmenshallseevisions andyouroldmenshall dreamdreams."

FatherO'Sullivansaid thatitwasover1,500years sinceSt,.Patrickhadseen onenightinadreamamessengercomingtohimwitha lettersignedwiththewords "VoxHiberniae"-TheVoice oftheIrish, St.Patrickwasoneofthe fewsaintswhohadwritten abookabouthisownlifestory.Outlininghiscapture bypiratesasayouth,his subsequentescapeandreturnhomeaftermanyyears, FatherO'Sullivansaidhis familywelcomedhimback withgreatjoy.

Perhapssuspectingwhat Godhadinstoreforhim, theypleadedwithhimnever toleavehomeagain.

"Butitwasjustthenthat Godintervened,"saidFatherO'Sullivan."Whenever Godgivesussomespecial favouryoumaybesurethat Hegivesittoussothatwe mayuseittohelpothers.

"ItwasbyGod'sspecial powerthatSt.Patrick escapedfromslavery,and Godhadgivenhimhis freedomsothathemightbe trainedasapriestandan apostlemissionary.SoGod begantoshowPatrickwhat hewantedofhim."

Inadreamhehadseen themessengerfromIreland withtheletterwhichwas theVoiceoftheIrish,askinghimtogobacktothem, callingtohimthathewas neededtogivethemthe faithwhichhepossessed.

VaticanCity,March7.-Scientificstudies indicatethatthecelebratedstatueofSt.Peter inSt.Peter'sBasilicahereisnotsooldasmost peoplethink,onartexperthasannounced. MarioSalmi,professorofthehistoryofmedieval artattheUniversityofRome,sayshisstudiesdatethe statuefromthe13thcentury.Untilnowitwasbelieved thatthestatuewasproducedinpaganRomeand subsequentlyadaptedforChristianuse,orthatitwas aproductofthelateRomanEmpire.

ThestatuesitsstifflyattherightoftheBasilica's mainaisle.Itdepictsacurly-headedSt.Peterholding uptwofingersinpontificalblessing.Therightfoot hasbeenwornawaybythelipsofdevoutpilgrims.

ProfessorSalmisaysthestatueisprobablythework ofArnolfodiCampio,aFlorentineartistofthe13th centurywhodesignedtheChapelofBonifaceIVand theTombofBonifaceVIII.Heattributesthestatue toArnolfobecauseofdetailsincompositionandcasting methods.

Hesaythatheanalysedthebronzecomposition usedinthestatueandfoundanalloyof80percent copperandalmost20percenttin,withmeretracesof lead.Thiscompositionwasinuseattheendofthe 13thcentury,hesays.

HerulesoutthepossibilitythatthestatuewasproducedlateintheRomanEmpirebecausemoreleadwas usedinartisticalloythen.Hesaysartistsofthesixth centuryusedabout10percentleadintheirbronze.

Herulesoutthepossibilitythatthestatuewasa productofpaganRomeonthegroundsthatclose examinationprovesittohavebeeninnowayaltered. Alterationwouldhavebeennecessarytoconvertthe statuefromapaganpersonagetoaChristiansaint.

Theonlyfactthatemergesclearandsharpfromthe statue'searlierhistoryisthatitwasveneratedbythe faithfulofthe15thcenturyintheoldBasilicaofSt. Peterthatwasreplacedbytoday'smagnificentstructure.

Perhapsitisonthepoliticallevelthatthewhole businessismostdistressing.Forexample,aformer HealthMinisterinTasmaniarecentlytoldtheLauncestonCityCouncilthat"theyhadtodecidefor themselveswhethertheyweregoingtolistentoeveryoneinthestreetoraccepttheopinionsofpeoplein authority."Thatsortofstatementmakesvery unpleasantreadinginasocietywhichclaimstobe democratic.ItisthesortofthingoneexpectsinRussia andChina.Butthedemocraticidealispreciselythat thoseinauthorityshouldlistentoeveryoneinthestreet. Democracyfailsinsofarasithasnotyetdeviseda methodofdoingjustthat.

Atfuneralservicesforthevictimsoftherecent explosionofthemunitionsship,LeCoubre,inHavana harbour,PremierCastroaccusedtheUnitedStatesof blowinguptheship,andadded:"Wearenotafraidof anyinvasion Ourpeopleareconditionedtodefend themselves.Thepro-governmentPresspromptlyechoed hisrabble-rousingwords.

Shoulddisagreementarisebetweengovernment inspectorsandprivateschoolauthorities,thegovernmentcanfallbackon"intervention."Thismeansthe Statecaneventuallytakeovertheschool.

PremierCastro'spropagandistsareacquiringmore andmorecontroloverthenationalcommunications media.

Theformerlyindependentdailies"Avance"and"El Mundo"nowbelongtotheregime,alongwithan increasingnumberofHavanaradioandtelevision stations.Mostoftheimportantdailiesinthepr.Jvinces arenowgovernment-controlled.

Publicationsthattakeanindependentstandorcriticisetheregimearevilifiedandthreatened.Pro-Castro workersonthefewindependentdailiesleft-"Informacion,""LaMarina"and"PrensaLibre"-insert"corrections"denyingthetruthofanynewsorcomment unfavourabletotheregime.

Adulteducationprogrammesforfarmersandworkers conductedbythemilitia,farmco-operativesandlabour unionsareanothermeansofspreadingtheregime's ideology.Soarethepapersandpostersputoutbythe government,whichoftencaricaturetheWesternPowers asgreedyandthreatening.

TremendousImpactOnIlliterate

Communistshavetakenadvantageofthemasseducationeffortstospreadtheirownpropaganda.Red influencewasalsoseenwhentheregime-controlled Cubannewsagency,PrensaLatina,recentlyjoinedthe associationthatgroupsthenewsservicesofthecommunistworld,includingTassoftheSovietUnion.

Thegovernment'spropagandadriveishavingatremendousimpactontheuneducatedmasseswhoinhabit Cuba'sslumsanddepressedfarmareas.

"Thepropagandahassuccessfullymixedpatriotism andhonestywith"Fidelism"andrevolution,andhas hadanhynotisingeffectonthousands,"areportertold meoveracupofcoffee.

Anothersaid:"TheofficialPresspreachesthisbasic tenet:ThepeoplearetheState,theStateisthepeople. Youcouldputitthisway.Thisisnotagovernmentof thepeople,bythepeopleandforthepeople,buta people'sgovernmentengagedinaclassstruggleand allthatgoeswithit."
