SpeakingattheApplecrossCanaConferencerecently,Mr.W.J.Mangini,B.Sc.,drewonthefindingsofchildpsychologiststooutline thelikelyreactionsofchildrengrowingupintheAustraliansocialenvironment.Heclaimedthattheproperspiritualdevelopmentof childrenrequiredadynamicandapostolicCatholicismonthepartoftheparents.Apostolicwork,farfrombeingaprivilegeoftheelite, wasabasicparentalresponsibility.
Thefollowingextracts containthemainpoints madeinamostunusual lecture:
Thefirstreligioustruth thatachildcouldlearn,Mr. Manginisaid,wasthatits parentslovedGod.Itwas important,hesaid,thatthey shouldlearnthatfirstreligioustruthquiteearlybecausethroughittheycould cometoknowthemostimportantfactaboutthemselves.Iftheydidnotcome toknowthecentralfact aboutthemselvesinearly childhoodtheymighthave tolearnitthehardway,and itmightneverbecomereally familiartothemuntilthey died.Thecentralfactabout themselves,ofcourse,was thattheywerecreatedby GodtoknowHim,loveHim andserveHiminthislife andtobehappywithHim foreverinthenext.
Ifchildrenaretograsp thistruthinawaythatit willbereallyusefultothem itisbestthattheygraspit ataveryearlyage.They candothis.Tounderstand how,wehavetoconsider thewayinwhichchildren liveandlearn;whatgoeson insidethechild'smind.
Thewholepsychologyof thechildisdirectedtowards anadult.Thisisafundamentaltruthofchildpsychology.Thewholebeingof achildisaimedatbeingan adult.Heunderstandsthis, thoughnotverywell,right fromthebeginning.He doesnotsticktoitverywell.
Hehashisperiodswhenhe doesn'twanttogrowup, whenhewantstobesmall againandnestleintohis mother;butmostlyhewants togrowup.Andallhisaim istogrowintohisidealof anadult.

Mr.F.E.Chamberlainhas,inrecentyears,beenmost insistentthattheLaborPartyisa"partyofprinciple." Nowifthatnotioniscorrectitshouldnotbepossible todividetheprincipleoftheParty.fromitsleadership. ButthechiefsofthePartyhaveexhibitedthemost astonishingmobilityintheirinterpretationsofLabor policytogetherwithanintoleranceofoppositionreminiscentoftheworstexcessesbothofCommunismand Fascism(exceptthattheLaborpurgeswerebloodless).
ItsspokesmansaysforthrightlythatLabor"abhors Communism."Certainlyafterthesmashingofthe industrialgroups,Mr.Chamberlain,drivenintoa corner,statedthatLaborwouldhandleCommunismin itsownway.Thesamecriticstodaymightwellchallengehimastowhathasbeendoneinthatdirection. AfterMr.Chambleraindeniedontelevisionthat180 ofthedelegatesatthelastA.C.T.U.CongressinMelbournehadbeenCommunist,hesubsequentlyadmitted thatalthoughonly25weremembersoftheCommunist Party,165delegates"hadfoundcommonground"with theRedsonaverycontroversialquestion.Itisbeyond denial,anyway,thatMr.Chamberlain'sforeignpolicy isindistinguishablefromthatoftheCommunists',that hepersonallyfavoursunityticketsandthatheisquite unrepentantaboutbackingRedpeacemovements.
Mr.Chamblerain,moreover,persistsinadelusion aboutthecausesofCommunism,whichisdemonstrably unsound."Inanycountrywhereeconomicconditions arelow,"hesaid,"therewillbeafeelingofrevolton thepartofthepeople."Thecatchaboutthatstatement isitssuggestionthatCommunismcomesfrombelowas apopularrevolution.yQuitesimply,thatisuntrueof anycountryintheworld,includingparticularlythe SovietUnion.Notonlyweretheorganisersofthe BolshevikRevolutionnotoftheworkingclass,they werenotevenRussian.Ifeveraminoritymovement couldandcanclaimcredititwasandisintheRussian Revolution.LikewiseinChinatherewasnosortof initialpopularsupportforthebanditswhoharassed theKoumintangregimeandaretodaythedefacto rulersofChina.

"Anaplasis"commentedon thetrulyChristianandEcumenicalpositionofthePatriarch."Eleftheria,"however,sawinthecalltothe CouncilaRomaneffortat hegemony:"NeversubmissiontoRome;Orthodoxy acceptsproposalsforreunionoftheChurches,but withoutcapitulations."
ProfessorAmilcarAlivisates,canonistandtheologianoftheGreekChurch, thinksthatcallinganEcumenicalCouncilisatpresentanimpossibility,asthe preparatoryconditions, whichsupposalongtheologicallabour,arelacking.
TheOrthodoxChurch, closeslyboundtoitsold tradition, cannotandwill notconvokeanEcumenical Councilwhichdidnothave thecharacteristicsofthe firstseven, whichcharacter isticsshouldalsobepresent inthiseighthcouncil.
APanorthodoxSynod couldbecalled,butitwould notbeecumenical.Onthe otherhand,theOrthodox Churchcouldnotparticipate unconditionallyinanEcumenicalSynodoftheRoman CatholicChurch.
Forthisreason,fromthe Orthodoxpointofview,the convokingofanEcumenical Councilissimplyimpossible atthepresenttime.
Whiletheproblemofthe unionoftheChurchesexists, aPapalEcumenicalCouncil isneitherpossiblenorconceivablebecauseitwould implytherecognitionofthe monarchicprimacyofthe Pope.
Itwouldmeantheunion oftheChurches, thewhole Christianworldunderone Shepherd, thePope, anidea whichneithertheOrthodox northeProtestantChurches willeverrecognise.Apart fromthis, anotherproblem arisesfortheOrthodox Church.
IftheOrthodoxChurch' werecalledtothecouncil, itsparticipationonafooting ofequalitywouldbeimpossiblebecausetheRoman Churchconsidersitasschismatic, ifnotheretical, and inconsequenceitsorganic participationwouldbeimpossible. Thereisthepossibilityof

Innovations?
G.Kostares,alawyer, writes:"Theunionofthe Churches-Orthodoxand Catholic-willbeadifficult workbecausesincethey wereseparated,Orthodoxy hasremainedfaithfultothe truthsdefinedbythefirst sevenCouncils,whilethe CatholicChurch,initsconvokingof13otherCouncils, hasbeenaddingdogmasto whatwastheteachingof theChurchbeforethe Schism.
"Ifanyoneweretocomparethedogmas"ofthe CatholicChurchwiththe symboloftheFaithhe wouldbeeasilyconvinced oftheinnovations.Itis sufficienttomentionthe primacyandinfallibilityof thePope, doctrineswhich arethecorner-stoneofthe separationoftheChurches."
ThepositionoftheGreek Churchatthepresent momentisthemostdifficult ofalltheEasternChurches. WhileotherChurcheshave losttheirpatriotic, though nottheirnationalfeelings, theGreeksstillpreserve both. We'shouldnotforget, besides, thattheCreekOrthodoxcommunityisthemost important, notonlybecause itcanmakedecisionsfreely, whichisimpossibletothe ChurchesbehindtheIron Curtain, butalsobecauseit hasthegreaternumberof faithful.
