H.A.W.,Beechworth:Whydon'tyouteachaborn-again asJesusdid?
H.:TheCatholicChurch teachespreciselythat''bornagain"messagewhichJesus taught.
WhenJesussaidtoNicodemus:"Exceptamanbe bornagainofwaterandthe HolyGhost, hecannotenter intothekingdomofGod" (Jn.3:5),Hewasstressing thenecessityofourreceivingbymeansoftheSacramentofBaptismaprinciple ofspiritualandsupernatural lifeoverandabovethe merelynaturalprincipleof lifewereceivedfromour earthlyparents.
Everybirthmeansalife, andifwearetobeborn "again"or"anew,"itmeans thatwemustreceiveanadditionalandnewlife.That isthelifeofdivinegrace,as opposedtothestateofspiritualdeathcalledsin.
Yourideaofthe"bornagain"messageis,ofcourse, notthat.But,then,your
ideaisnotinaccordance withtheteachingsofChrist.
Youthinkoneis"born again"byconsciousconversion,byrepentanceofsin, theturningofthesoulto God,andthepersonalacceptanceofChrist.Butthat isnotenough. St.Paulwentthroughall that;yet,afterthat,received theSacramentofBaptism (Acts,9:18).Itwasthen thathewas"bornagain"of waterandtheHolyGhost.
Q.:Instead,youteachthe CatholicFaith,whichIs onlyformal.
R.:Didyouknowanything abouttheCatholicFaith,or wereyoutoreceiveinstructioninit,youwouldnot entertainthatfoolishidea.
EveryCatholicknows quitewellthat,whilstGod's graceandnewpowersare giventothesoulintheSacramentofBaptism,thereis

Oneisobligedtokeepin astateofgrace,toyield one'sheartandmindand willtoChrist,toresisttemptationstosin,torepentof allfailurestodoso,andto makeeveryefforttogrowin thoseChristianvirtues whicharepropertothe newlifeinChrist.
There'snomereformality aboutallthat.
Q.:TheCatholicreligioncan nevercausesoulstobe bornagain.
R.:Itcannelhelpcausing soulstobebornagainwhenevertheSacramentofBaptismisadministered.
OurLordinstitutedBaptismforthatpurpose,andit isHewho,bymeansofthe Sacrament,communicates thenewlifeofgracetothe soulofthebaptisedperson.
Naturally,asthosebaptisedininfancygrowupand aretaughttheirreligion, theyareexpectedtolive theirreligion.
Anadultwhoisconverted beforereceivingBaptism,as wasSt.Paul,doesnottherebyenterintofullunion withChrist.Suchconversionisnotasubstitutefor Baptism.
ThereceptionoftheSacramentisstillnecessaryfor theimpressionofthetrue Christiancharacteruponthe soul, foradmissiontothe Churchasthemysticalbody ofChrist, andforlifeinthat Churchasamemberof Christ.
Q.:Jesussaid:"Exceptye bebornagain,yecannot entertheKingdomof ofHeaven."
R.:YouomittheexplanationgivenbyJesusHimself toNicodemus,whoasked howamancanbeborn again.
Jesusreplied:"Verily, verily,Isayuntothee:Exceptamanbebornagainof waterandoftheSpirit,he cannotenterintothekingdomofGod"(Jo.3:5,A.V.).
ItistheSacramentof Baptismwhichgivesthefull lifeofgrace, andmakesone a"born-again"memberof ChristandofHisChurch. TheActsoftheApostles tellsusofthe3,000convertedbySt.Peter'ssermon onthedayofPentecostand oftheirreceptionofBaptism, describingthemas havingbeenaddedtothe Church.
ManyProtestants,calling themselves"born-again" people,or"twice-born" people,onabasisoftheir purelysubjectiveandpersonalreligiousfeelings,are victimsofanindividualism quiteforeigntoNewTestamentteaching.
Theyhavenoideaofthe Church, noroftheworship ofGodprescribedbyChrist, andtheydispensethemselves inawholesalefashionfrom manyverydefiniteduties requiredbytheChristian religion.
Andwithallthis, thereis aconstantdangertothem, notonlyofanextraordinary self-complacency,butofthe pridewhichthanksGod theyarenotliketherestof men.
Such"born-again"ideas arenotonlyfalse,butmost deceptiveanddangerousto thosewhoarethevictimsof them.

R.:St.John,inRevelation ortheApocalypse,chapter 20,speaksofChristreigning forathousandyears,but thepassageishighlysymbolical,andtheexpression "athousandyears"iscertainlynotintendedliterally andnumerically. Itrepresentsfiguratelya longperiod,andrightlyappliedtothewholeperiodOf theChristiandispensation, extendingfromtheIncarnationtilltheendofthe world. InthatreplytotheSadducees,Heindicatedthat angelicortotallydifferent conditionsfromthoseofthis materialworldwillfollow immediatelyuponthegen eralresurrection. Athousandyears'reign onearthisaltogetherexcludedbythatclearteachingofChristHimself.
Q.:NothingIcansayseems toconvincemyfriend.

St.John'smysteriousreferencetothe"thousand years"is,however,easily explained.Theaccountof creationinGenesismade usesymbolicallyofsixdays forthecompletionofthe workofcreation,the seventhdaybeingfigurativelyofthesabbathorrest.
ElsewhereintheOld Testamentwearetoldthat a"thousandyears"arebut asadayinthesightofGod.
