Theuseofincenseis mentionedallthroughHoly Scripturefrombeginningto end.Weread, bothin Leviticus(6:15),howGod commandedthepriestsofthe OldLawtoofferincenseas asweetsavourtotheLord. Intheverylastbookof theNewTestament,St. John, inhisvisionarydescriptionofheaven, speaks ofanangelhavingagolden censerandofferingincense withtheprayersofthe saintsbeforethethroneof God(Rev.8:3). Despitethisscriptural sanction, however, the CatholicChurchdidnotuse incenseinherritualduring thefirstfourcenturies.
Thereasonforthatwas becauseoftheintense strugglewithpaganism. ForthepaganGreeksand Romansusedincensein theirworshipofheathen gods.
Indeed, duringthefirst threecenturiesofpersecu tints, itwasenoughfora Christiantothrowalittle incenseonapaganaltarto admitthathehadrenouncedChristandhadreverted topaganism.
SoTertullianwrotein thesecondcentury:"Wedo nutburnincenseasisofferedtoidols."
