AyoungSpanishpeasantboywholaterbecameAbbotofthe BenedictineMonasteryofNewNorciafor35yearswasburiedon August1withanArchbishopandfourBishopsamongthemany whocametothePontificalRequiemMass.Hisbodywaslaidto restinthepubliccemeteryoftheMissiontowhichhehadgivena lifetimeofdevotedwork.
When,in1951,hedecidedtolaydowntheheavy burdenofoffice,heelected toremainthereatNewNorcia.Hisdeeppiety,gentlness,charity,humilityand patiencewereasourceof edificationtoallassociated withthatMonastery.
Hisverypresencewasa blessingontheAbbey.He leftbehindthefragrant memoryofkindly,edifying andselflessAbbotandtruly devotedspiritualsonofSt. Benedict.
Theyalsoprayonthat occasionforthefuturesuccessofthe84nationalRed CrossSocietieswhichare devotedtotheabolitionof warasameansofsettling internationaldisputes,the improvementofhealth,the preventionofdiseaseand themitigationofsuffering.
Onehundredyearsago, onthebattlefieldofSolferino,inNorthernItaly, wherewoundedmenwere lefttodieapainfulanduncomforteddeath,theidea oftheRedCrosswasborn.
ItwasbyaccidentHenri Dunantcameuponthis holocaustandwithChristlikecompassiontheyoung Swissbanker'sheartached forthosewhoselivesor limbshadbeenlost.

NewInterpretation
Thepianiste'sjoyin gracefullytenderandhappy musicwasevidenttoo,in herplayingonSaturday nightofthesecondand thirdmovementsofthe SchumannConcerto.
Thefirstmovementwas notquiteasromanticininterpretationaswemight havewished,buthere,perhapsitwastheperformer'sinnategoodtastethat causedhertosheeraway, justashadetoomuch,from theover-emotionalapproach whichmarssomepianists playingofthismovement.
Barber's"Adagiofor StringOrchestra"followed theZador"FugueandFantasia"onSaturdaynight. ThestringsweremosteloquentasTiborPauldrew fromthemvibranttoneand aperfectlygraduatedrise andfallofsoundinthecontinualcrescendosanddiminuendos.
Theprincipalorchestra workinthatsameconcert wasBerlioz's"Symphonie Fantastique."UnderTibor Paul'sdeftandlivelydirectionthewarmthand poetryofthefirstmovementsweremorethanadequatelyportrayed.
Intremendouslyeffective contrastthelasttwomovelmentsbroughtthesymphonyandtheconcerttoa fieryclimax.
Undemanding
AttheYouthConcert,the programmecomprisedthe overturetoDonizetti'sopera "TheDaughteroftheRegiment"(crisp,conciseplayinghere),threemovements fromHungarianDanceSuite byWeinerandforthepiece deresistance,Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" suite.
Thislast,thankstoMr. Farnsworth-Hall'sexplanation,gavetheaudiencethe chancetoseetheimportant parteachinstrumentplays intheschemeofmusicsuch asthis.

PersonallyIfeelthe choicecouldnothavebeen better,for,inordertobe abletowritethisbiography AndreMauroishadtounderstandthemeaningof thediscoverymadeby AlexanderFleming.
Thatmeanthehadtoreducethescientifictermsto intelligiblelanguage.
ThefactthatIwasable tofollowM.Maurois'expositionmeansthathehas succeededmagnificentlyin doingwhathesetouttodo.

Likeallconverts,particuarlythosewhodidnot evenknowtherewasaGod,Iamlongingtoshare thepricelesstreasuresoftheFaithwithmyneighbours.ManyofthemarenotCatholics,beingProtestantsorofnoreligion.
Perhapsinourownsmallwaywecanreflectin ourlives,materiallypoorasweare,thetruevalues. Itismydreamthatourpriestwillgainpermission fromhisBishoptohavetheBlessedSacramentpermanentlyinourhome.
WecannotgotoMassandHolyCommunionevery day,aswesolongtodo,butifwecouldonlyhave Himinourmidst!Yetweknowthathelivesinus, Christinoursouls,andhavingConfessionandCommuniononceaweekisaverygreatgraceinaparish sofarinthecountryasourown.
Ihopethatthosewhoreadmystorywillnotforget ourfamilyintheirprayers,andtheneedsofour priestandparish.OfcourseIdonotknowwhyGod gavemethegiftofFaith,oratwhatpointintime myintellectgraspedtheproofoftheExistenceof God.
