Milan,Italy:AnItalian missionsmagazinehassuggestedthatthequestionof laydeaconsmightbe broughtupattheforthcomingecumenicalcouncil.
LeMissioniCattoliche,a magazineeditedbythe PontificalInstituteofForeignMissionsinMilan, statedthattheinstitutionof laydeaconswouldnotbe animprobablesubjectfor thecounciltoconserve.
Itrecalledthattheproblemwasbroughtupduring the1956IntelnationalLiturgicalCongressinAssisi byBishopWilliamVan Bekkum,S.V.D., Vicar ApostolicofRuteng,Indonesia.
Theideawouldbetoordaindeaconswhohaveno intentionofgoingontothe priesthood,andeventoordainmenwhoaremarried andhavechildren.
UnderpresentChurchlaw ordinationtothediaconate isreservedtothosegoing ontothepriesthood, andit involvessolmenvowsof chastity.
Theselaydeacons,tobe assignedprimarilyinmissionterritories,wouldperformcertainecclesiastical functionsnowreservedto thepriesthood,including baptism,preaching,distributionofCommuniontothe sick,andpreparationofthe dyingforExtremeUunction.
In1957PopePiusXII, speakingtothecongressof theLayApostolate,referredtotheproblem,andindicatedthathedidnot thinkthetimewasyetappropriateforsuchadecision.
TheMilanmissionmagazine,afterreviewingthe historyofthequestion, concluded:
"Wehopefromtheheart forarenewingofsuchan orderandwethinkthat. giventheimportanceand theactualityofthequestion, itwouldnotbesurprisingifitwereevencalled totheattentionofthealreadyannouncedecumenicalcouncil."
