Thisissueof"TheRecord"isthefirstinCatholicPressMonth.Thethirty-dayperiod isobservedthroughoutAustraliatoremindCatholicsofwhatonimportantpartthe writtenwordplaysinthemodernworldintheformulationofideasandhenceofactivitieswhichaffectthelivesofeachandeveryoneofus.

InthisState,inparticular,wherethereisanewspapermonopoly(atleastasregardsthedailyPress, morningandevening)itisalmostinevitablethatthe opinionsoftheaveragecitizenwillbemouldedina stereotypeddirectiononnationalandinternational affairs.

Wheretheissuesconcernedare"indifferent"this maynotappeartobeofgreatconsequence.Yetit issurelyatragicthingthatthinkingshouldbestandardised.Isnotthatoneoftheradicalobjections

ThatiswhythesecularPress,cutofffromthe ultimaterealitiesandindreadofthem,tendsto deepenitsmaterialismthroughsensualism.After allifthereisnorealitybeyondmatteronemight aswellexplorematterinitsmoredelectableaspects --asifitmatteredsupremely.

SothesecularPressisunabletomaintainthe fictionofbeingreligiouslyindifferent.Itsneutralism isconstantlybreakingdownonthesideofirreligion. Thisisrarelyamatterofdirectpolicy;itistheinevitableresultofaphilosophywhichfailsinany fundamentalexplanationsoflife.

Oneofthemostflagrantinstancesofthatwastobe foundinthetreatmentaccordedtheSpanishCivil CivilWarinthebulkofthesecularPressandinthe Redslantingofnewsforyearsafterwards.,The secularPressisonlyaveryrecentconverttothe anti-Communistcause,andevennowitisnotawholehearted,consistentorreliableconvert.Everytime theSovietleadersissueanotherspuriouspromise, thereisasplurgeofirrationaloptimismandunfcundedhope.Thatisbecausethesecularist,prescindingfromthespiritual,issheerlyincapableof understandingtheinnernatureofMarxism.Corn-

munismisformalatheism;secularismismaterial atheism.

Clearly,ifCatholicsarecontenttoliveouttheir intellectuallivesexclusivelyinthesecularistclimate asregardsliterature(andhence,thought)theywill soonexhibitthecircumscribedmentalitywhichis makingtherestorationoftheChristianlifeinthe democraciessoexcruciatinglydifficult.ItisimperativethattheyliveaccordingtothemindoftheChurch anditissurpassinglypuzzlingtoknowhowtheycan dothatwithoutregularlyreadingtheCatholicPress.

Ofcourse,Catholicsgetagoodgroundingintheir Faithinourschools.Butthemajorityofthemdo notgobeyondtheprimarylevel.Afterthatthey aredependentfortheirintellectualprogressas Catholicsonhomeinfluences,friends,andpulpit.It isanotoriousfactthattheirgrowthinthingsCatholicdoesnotkeeppacewiththeirsecularprogress.

SoitisthattheCatholicPressis,orcouldbethe chiefinstrumentalityofCatholicAdultEducation. Itcanandmustimplementtheworkofthepulpit, theinfluenceofwhichhasdiminishedregrettablyin moderntimes.

Infuturearticlesweshallexaminetowhatextent theCatholicsofthisStatemeasureuptotheirresponsibilitiesregardingCatholicliterature.Itmayprove analarmingstory.ForitiscertainthatthepreservationandextensionoftheFaithisinextricablybound uptodaywiththespreadoftheCatholicPress.

Thedistinctionbetweenthosementalstatesmaybe illustratedbyconsideringtheexperienceofahouse Burglar.Ifthehouseholderiscertainthatthesounds hehearsatnightarenotbeingmadebyanintruder hewillturnoverandgotosleep.

Butifhemerelyhasdoubtsinthematterhewill havethemallnight.Ifhegetsuptofindout,his doubtswillresolvethemselvesonewayortheother. Buttolieinbedtoofearfultoinvestigateisa cowardlyflightfromreality.

Soitisthatthesecularistremainsamaterialist orsovagueastothesuprasensorythatitdoesn't matter.Heremainsamaterialistbecausehehasa morbidterroroffindingoutthefulltruthaboutlife andhisfearsanddoubtsareinfectious.

Somefewyearsagoshe realisedalong-cherished hopewhensheacquireda holidayhomeforchildren atRockingham.Thisbuildingisatpresentbeingextendedtotakealarger numberofchildren.

TheSt.MariaGoretti schoolwasbuiltin1955and forthefirsttimetheorphanshadacompleteschool unit.Untilthenschoolhad beenheldinvariousdisused portionsoftheinstitution. Thisenterprisegavethe orphansoneofthemost beautifulschoolsinthemetropolitanarea.

Forwehavetendedtobogdowninsheerdiscouragementaswehavebeenvanquishedagainandagain attheconferencetables.Atlength,forbetteror worse,wehavemovedandsoexpressedthewillto survive.Therecameatideintheaffairsofthedemocracieswheresheermovementwasasymptomof vitality.

Moreover,theSoviet'scoldwar,mosttellinginthe economicfield,hashadasevereset-backamongthe ArabsoftheMiddleEast.SincetheAmericanshowinginKorea,theKremlinapparentlydecidedthat furthermilitaryadventureswereunprofitable.So. forthepastfiveyears,shehassoughteconomic dominancethrough"aidprogrammes."Todaythe Soviethaseconomicagreementswith11"uncommitted"nationsandgrowinginfluencewithanother eight.Cardinalprincipleinthesedealingsisthat Russiararelygivesmoney.Shespecialisesinbarter dealsandlow-interest,long-termloans.Moreover, shehasendeavouredtocreatetheillusionthatno stringsattachtohereconomicassistance.

InNovemberof1956,Jordan,SyriaandSaudi Arabiaputtheirarmiesunderthejointcontrolofan Egyptiangeneral.EightmonthslaterJordandenouncedNasserforinterferenceinitsaffairsandinthoseof Libya,Tunisia,Sudan,Iraq,LebanonandSaudi Arabia.

Inthemiddleof1957Lebanonheldelectionsto decidewhetheritwouldgowithNasserortheWest. Itwasnotadifficultdecision,astheLebanesesaw it:"RussiagivesusthreatsandtheAmericansgive usmoney.Whatwouldyoudo?"Aboutthesame timeIraqdecidedtojoinitsfortuneswiththoseof theWest.

withtheWest,andthefallofLebanonwouldhave jeopardisedthewholepositionofAmericainthe MiddleEast.Henceitisahalf-truth(andnotthe betterhalf)torepresentthesituationinLebanonand IraqaspurelyinternalaffairsasifNasserandhis SyrianconfederatewerenottheArabhatchetmen oftheKremlin.ForallthatNasserisnothappy. HewasgladtosettletheSuezdisputefor81million dollarsandtohavetheUnitedStatesfree26million dollarsofEgypt'sfrozenassets.

SoitisimperativethattheAmericansmakeit cleartotheworldthattheirinterventioninLebanon isnotmotivatedbyanyinterestinproppingup Chamoun,butsolelyinensuringthatLebanoncontinueasanindependentnation.

NorfromhisshiftofgroundisKruschevasconfidentofvictoryasRed-slantedPresscommentwould suggest.Heisdecidedlyuncomfortableatdiscussion underU.N.auspicesandhehasnogreatheartfor Arabsupport.Ontheotherhandwhatdoesthe WeststandtogainfromdiscussionwiththeSoviet? Perhapsthebest'commentonthismatterhasbeen madebyMr.G.F.KeenanspeakingatOxfordUniversity:"Russia'sCommunistbosseshaveusedfalsehoodsasadeliberateweaponofpolicy.Fourdecades ofcynicalintellectualopportunismhavewroughta strangecorruptionoftheCommunistmind,rendering itincapableofdistinguishingsharplybetweenfact andfictioninitsrelationshiptoanyexternalpower."

Itisbeingsaid,toosimplylandtoocynically,that theWest'sinterestintheMiddleEastisbasedsolely onoilconcessions.Trulytheseareoftheverygreatest moment,notonlytotheUnitedStates,buttothe entireeconomiclifeofEurope.Buttherewereno oilconcessionsinKoreaorIndo-China.Thisbattle isanotherofthelocalwarswhichhasabasisin genuinenationalismbuthasbeencapitalisedby Russiainherplanofworldconquest.TheAmericans MeanwhileEgypthadhadtwoyears'experiencehavepouredoutbillionsofdollarsallovertheworld ofSoviet"aid."TheRedstooktheircottoncropandtoassistunder-developednations.TheyhavecerundersolditdrasticallytotheruinofEgyptiansales.tainlynoimperialisticambitionsandinmostinstances verylittleprospectoftrade.Theiraimisgenuinely peaceandtheyarepreparedtopreserveitifnecessarybywar.Buttheresponsibilitybeforetheworld willlieclearlyandheavilyontheshouldersofthe Kremlin'sevilmenandtheirsatellites.

TheysuppliedcrudeoilwhichgummedupNasser's refineriesandnewsprintofsopooraqualitythatit rippedtopiecesinthepresses.The250milliondollar barteragreementofSeptember,1955thusproved verydearindeed.ButNasserwascompelled, throughlackoffriends,tonegotiateanother175milliondollarcreditinNovember,1957.Syriahas beenpromisedsome200milliondollardealofwar suppliesinexchangeforsurplusfarmproduceand technicalaidfor19developmentalprojects,eachof whichrequiresSovietapproval.Somuchfor"aid withoutstrings."

Thehollownessofthechargewasevidencedby Syria'sfailuretotakeanyprecautionarymeasureson thefrontier.SherejectedKingSaud'sofferofmediationbecauseNasserfearedhimasa.rivalforleadershipoftheArabs.

ToPreserveLebaneseIndependence

NassernexttriedtoincitetheArabrefugeesfrom Palestine(halfamillionofwhomareinJordan)to riotagainstKingHussein.Buttherefugeeshad beendisenchantedbyhisdefeatbyIsrael.Jordan crackeddownhardonEgyptianandRedagents amongtherefugees.

InFebruaryofthisyeartheUnitedArabRepublic comprisingEgyptandSyria,cameintobeing.Ten dayslaterJordanandIraqformedtheArabFederation(nowUnion).ThesheiksofKuwaitandBahreen,vitaloilcentres,consideredjoining.From everypointofviewtheUnionwasamorenatural affinitythantheRepublic.Thelatterhadfourtirdts thepopulationoftheformer,buttheUnionwas immeasurablyricher.Bothrivalgroups,however, neededaidtosurvive.Andthatispreciselythe pointwherethefomentoftheMiddleEastceasesto b(aninternalmatterandbecomesofinternational import.

Iraqwasinanunhappyposition.Byvirtueofits membershipoftheBaghdadPace-itwasthesole Arabmember-ithadalienatedArabsupportand wasunderacloudofdistrust.Itswithdrawalwould havebeennocatastropheasfarastheWestwas,epacerned.

Lebanonwasadifferentcasealtogether.Thereis nodoubtofthe"massiveinterference"initsaffairs bySyriansandPalestinianinfiltrators.(TheLebanesedumped12,000Syriansbackovertheirborder). TheReformationtorealargenumberofpeople fromtheMotherChurch,butanyneedforreformin CatholicrankswassquarelymetattheCouncilof Trent(1545-1563).Noreformingofdoctrinewas necessaryorevenpossible,asnomeremancanimproveonGod'srevelation,andtheCatholicChurch cannotloseitsdepositoffaith.Abusesthathadcrept intotheChurchwerehandledwithoutglovesbythe CouncilandtheTridentinedecreesofreformcorrectedproblemsinepiscopaljurisdiction,theobligationofresidenceofBishopsandoccupantsofother ecclesiasticaloffices,thelegalaffairsoftheclergy, clericalmorals,andtheeducationofcandidatesfor thepriesthood.

Thetestimonyofcurrentscholarlyhistory,therefore,isthattheMiddlesAgesowethecivilisation andconversionoftheso-calledbarbarianswhoswept downonEuropetotheworkoftheCatholicChurch, whichdidamignificentjoballduringthetimecalled theMedievalPeriod.

ThelateDr.JamesJ.Walshwroteagreatbook, "TheThriteenththeGreatestofCenturies,"and succeededadmirablyinprovinghispoint.Ours isagreateragemechanically,butitisnotanageof deeperthoughtbyanymeans.Protestantnations todayhaveahighformofcivilisation,buttheyhad tobuildthisontheexperimentsandachievements oftheirCatholicancestors.Onlyapoorlyreadman oracharlatanwouldclaimthatnon-Catholicnations surpasstheCatholiclandsincultureandcivilisation. InamixedlandliketheUnitedStates,weknowthat menofeveryfaithhavetheabilitytodevelopthe artsandsciences.Ontheotherhand,whenwego hackthroughhistory,wefindthatmodernmanowes atremendousdebttomedievalCatholics.

"FortunatelythestudyoftheMiddleAges,"saysa modernCatholicauthority,"ismoreandmoreoccupyingscholarlyauthoritiesinEnglandandAmerica, andtheyarediscoveringthat,justbecausetheywere theagesoffaith,theirhistorywaslaterpervertedto throwdiscreditontheCatholicChurch."

Iwouldnotwanttoreturntomedievallifeany morethanIwouldwishtogobacktomychildhood when"horselesscarriages"werefewandfarbetween andwelightedthegasinsteadofpushingabutton forlight.ButIrespectthepeopleofthoseolddays, forIknewthemwellandlovedthemfortheirvirtue andtheirthrift.Ilovethemedievalists,forIknow whatkindofCatholicstheyhadtobetopassdownthe ChurchIseeinactionallaroundmetoday.

"Itisnolongerpossibletodrawasharpdistinction betweenthecultureorintelligenceinmedievaland moderntimes,"saystheauthoritywehavebeenquoting.Hedeclaresthat"compulsoryeducationand theimpactuponevery-daylifeofscientificinventions arerecentdevelopmentswhichseparateusinexternalandpossiblyinmorefar-reachingwaysfrom theMiddleAges,thoughtheircivilisingeffectsare stilluncertain."

Non-Catholichistoricalauthorities,inanumberof eminentcases,havecompletelybrokenwiththeidea thattheMiddleAgeswerealsoDarkAges.Asone non-Catholicauthorsays:"Thecontrast,onceso fashionable,betweentheagesofdarknessandthe agesoflight"-thatis,betweenMedievalTimesand ourModernAge-"hasnomoretruthinitthanhave theidealisticfancieswhichunderlieattemptsat medievalrevivalism."Learnedmentodayarereexaminingwith"fascinatingperplexity"theforces thatendedtheOldRomanEmpire.

ThebarbarianswhosweptdownfromNorthern EuropeovertheOldRomanEmpireandgradually upsetitwereneitherbarbariansnorsemi-barbarians "strugglingforward,unaidedtoastateofcivilisation; butwerevigorous,intelligent,semi-civilisedpeople whofellateveryturnunderhighlysophisticated influences."Theseinfluenceswerethecivilisation oftheOldRomanEmpiretogetherwiththemissionaryandcivilisingforcethatcamedirectlyfrom theCatholicChurch.

Thepainting.portraitwasoriginallycommissioned by CharlesForte,aLondon restaurateur,forpresentationtotheChurchofSt. PeterinClerkenwell,a Londondistrictknownas "LittleItaly."

HearingthatthePope hadexpressedgreatadmirationfortheportrait,the RectorofSt.Peter'sofferedit,withMrForte's assent,tothePontiffasa giftfromthechurchand theItaliancommunity.The giftwasacceptedonthe Pope'sbehalfbyArchbishopGeraldP.O'Hara, ApostolicDelegatetoGreat Britain.

Theopportunitytopaint whatmaybecomethe principalauthenticlikeness ofthe262ndPopecameas asurprisetotheartist.

"WhenIrequestedthathe sitfortheportrait,"he said,"Iknewthatothers makingthesamerequest hadbeenrefused.Ireally amnotcertainwhat promptedhimtosayyes."

Mr.Rodenmadethree visitstoItalybeforethe portraitwascompleted.In thesummerof1956,he madepencilandchalk studiesattheVatican,and earlyin1957heworked thereagain,producingstudiesinoilsoftheheadand shouldersanddrawingdetailsofthethrone.

Intheautumnof1957he wentagaintoItaly,this timewiththelargecanvas, onwhichhehadbeenworkinginhisstudioinKensington, England.The Popewasthenathissummerresidence,Castelgandolfo,wherehegavethe finalsittings.

Theartistdescribedthe Popeas"awonderfulsit-

ter."ThePopewouldsit forshortperiods,accordinglyashecouldsparetime fromhismanyengagements. Duringthesittingshe spokeinEnglishandtoucheduponmanysubjects,recallingparticularlyhis visittoLondonfortheCoronationofGeorgeVin 1911.

Healwaystookgreatinterest,Mr.Bodensaid,in theprogressofthepainting andcarefullyexaminedthe variouschalksketchesand oilstudies.

WhenthePopesawthe completedportrait,Mr. Bodenrecalled,hesaidit was"magnificent-very fineindeed."

UnitedNations,N.Y.,July18.-Co-operationbetweenmissionariesandAustralian officialshasprovidedthebasisforaneffectivetechnicalandsecondaryschoolsystem intheTerritoryofNewGuinea,aUnited Nationsbodywastoldhere.

ThestatementwasmadeWithrespecttoteachers byAmbassadorE.Ronald Walker,Australiandelegate totheU.N.Trusteeship Council,duringitscurrent annualreviewofthereports oftrustterritories.

TheTerritoryofNew GuineaintheSouthPacific,whichincludesthe north-easternpartofthe islandofNewGuinea,the BismarckArchipelago,the AdmiraltyIslandsandthe northernSolomonIslands, hasapopulationofabout 1,250,000.Itwasplaced underAustralianadministrationin1946bytheU.N.

Mr.Walkersaidthatthe influenceofChristianityin theterritoryisresponsible forthefactthat"thereare morethan4,000indigenousteachers,noless than3,700ofthemteaching inmissionschools.Those teacherswillrightlyresent thecriticismoftheirwork expressedbyoneortworepresentativesinthiscouncil."

Mr.Walkerwasreferring tocommentsoftheSoviet andotherdelegatestothe TrusteeshipCouncil.Since itsinceptiontheSoviet delegationhasbeenacritic andopponentofmission schools.

Atthecurrentsession IvanLobanovofthe U.S.S.R.indicatedthatgraduatesofmissionschools willbeconsidered"semiliterate"inafewyears.

TributeToMissions

ThedelegatesofIndia andBurma,M.A.Vellodi andU.UkyawMin,although carefultogive"duecredit" to-missionaryefforts,impliedindebatesandin questionstoNewGuinea's specialrepresentative,Mr. Jones,thatstandardsofinstructioninmissionschools areinferiortothoseingovernmentschools.

Itisthepolicyofthese delegationstopromotethe establishmentofmoregovernmentschools.Theyarguethattheterritory's peopleshouldhavea"free choice"betweenmission andsecularschools.

Inreplytotheirquestions,Mr.Jonesinvariably stressedthe"outstanding contributiontotheadvancementofthepeople" beingmadebymissionariesinthefieldsofhealth andeducation.

Oneoftheoldestofthe12majoradministrative officesoftheChurchknownasRomanCongregations, theCongregatonoftheCouncilistheproductof historicalreactionandabulwarkthrownupinthe Counter-Reformation.

Sincefewcountries,however,canmatchtheU.S.'s educationalsystem,thecongregationhastriedto encouragealternatemeansofdealingwiththeproblemofprovidingadequatereligiousinstruction.

Thecongregationpointswithparticularprideto theformationoftheLatinAmericanBishop'sCouncil (C.E.L.A.M.).Thiscouncil,representingmorethan 400Bishops,co-ordinatesreligiousactivitythroughcutSouthandCentralAmerica.

Ontheotherhand,thecongregationtookalook attheAugustvacationplansofthousandsofCatholics andswitchedtheobligationoffastandabstinenceon thevigilofAssumption(August14th)tothevigilof theImmaculateConceptiononDecember7.

Christianmissionsof manydifferentdenominationsareworkinginNew Guinea.Prominentamong theCatholicsaretheDivine Wordmissionaries.Among theseareBishopsAdolph A.NoserandLeoArkfeld.

Inthediscussionof Nauru,anotherPacifictrust territoryunderAustralian administration,it was broughtoutthattheonly exampleoftheNauruan languageinwritingisa dictionary"compiledbya RomanCatholicmissionary."

Inallthereare23Cardinalsonthecongregation's plenaryboard,includingHisEminenceEdwardCardinalMooney,ArchbishopofDetroit.CardinalmemberslivinginRomemeeteverySaturdaytoconsider majoritemsofbusiness.OnthefirstandthirdMondayofeachmonthCardinalCiriacireportstothe Fope,submittingtohimthecongregation'sdecisions forfinaldisposition.

AmajortaskofthisCongregationistoexamine andapprovealldecreesissuedbyprovincialand plenarycouncils.Aprovincialcouncilismadeupof allbishopsandhighofficialsofametropolitanarchdiocese.Aplenarycouncilincludesallthebishopsof anentirecountrymeetingunderthepresidencyof apapallegate.

Thesecouncilslaydownthegenerallawsandpoliciesgoverningtheirjurisdictions.Tomakesurethat thesedecreesareinaccordwiththespiritandtraditionoftheChurch,theCongregationoftheCouncil mustcheckthemthoroughly.

Theconsultorsstudythedecreesinquestion.If necessary,theysuggestcorrections.Whenallrevisionshavebeenmade,aplenarysessionofcardinals oftheCongregationreviewsthedecreesandpasses themontothePopeforhisapproval.Lastyearthe decreesoftheprovincialcouncilsofGuadalajara, Mexico;Portland,Oregon;andToledo,Spain,were approved.

Atthesametimethatthepriestrealisestheprimary importanceofHolyMass,heisalsoawarethat,for themostpart,thesermonpreachedatSundayMass istheonlyformofinstructionorinspirationthat theaverageCatholicreceives.

Withsignificantexceptions,formalreligiousinstructionceaseswithHighSchool.AndsoourCatholics mustlooktothebriefsermononSundayforany furtherinstructioninthemattersoffaithormorals.

Inthelightofthisunavoidablefact,thepriestknows thatthepreachinginhischurchonSundaycanhave agreatinfluenceonthelivesofthefaithful.

Then,timerestrictionrearsitsuglyhead.Theday ofleisurelydivineworshipseemstobegone.Most ofourcityparishesfinditnecessarytohavefiveor sixMasseseachSundaytoaccomomdatethecrowds. ThismeansschedulingMassesrathercloselytogether -usuallyanhourapart.

"CommonDenominator"Level

Whatwithtrafficandparkingproblems,andthe efficientemptyingoutandfillingagainofthechurch, thetimelimitforMass,sermon,andthedistribution ofHolyCommunionis,roughly,forty-fiveminutes.

Evenwithoutreadinganyannouncements,thistime limitforcesthepriesttorestrictthelengthofhistalk totenortwelveminutes.Withthispressureoftime, itissometimesverydifficulttodevelopmorethan oneimportantpointinasermon.Itisevenmoredifficulttobecomeeloquent.

Themake-upoftheaverageCatholiccongregation givesrisetostillanotherproblem.EachSundaythe priestlooksoutfromthepulpitoveragroupof peoplewhoconstituteacompletecross-sectionofintellectuallevels.

ThereistheCatholicwhohashadacompleteeducation,andthereisalsotheCatholicwhomaynot havefinishedgradeschool.Inbetweenarealllevels ofunderstanding.Nowallhavetheincomparable giftofFaith;allareseekingknowledgeandinspiration.

This,ofcourse,requiressomelogicalorganisation,

ifthetruthsofourFaitharetobetaughtsystematically.Andsowefindmoreandmoreparishestaking uptheideaofacourseorseriesofinstructions.One yearitwillbeadiscussionoftheSacraments;another year,aseriesontheCommandmentsofGodandthe Church-andsoon.Sothatoveraperiod,say,of fiveyears,allthemajorteachingsofourFaithhave beencovered.

InterruptionsintheseriesareboundtooccurgreatliturgicalFeasts,thevariousliturgicalseasons oftheChurchyear,specialparochialoccasions-all thesecertainlymustberecognisedandtreatedfrom thepulpit.Butthecourseofsermons,plannedfor anentireseason,seemstobetheanswertoasystematicwayofinstructingthefaithful.

Thereisnodoubtthatinstructionsofthissortare boundtoincludeacertainamountofrepetition.The truthsofourFaitharecloselyintertwined,and elementsofinstructionwilloverlap.Andthereare thoseofourcongregationswhowillinsistthatthey wantmorethanjustthecatechism;theyneedand wantinspiration-andtheyareright!Theidealprogrammeofinstructionsmustbeflexibleenoughto include,fromtimetotime,thetalkontheinspirationallevel.

AndwhenIspeakofinspirationalsermons,Ido notrefertomeregeneralmoralising,the"letusdo this,letusdothat"typeofsermon.Toinspireisto seektoliftourcongregationupintotheareaofdefiritespiritualgrowthandprogress.Prieststodayare becomingevermoreconsciousofthefactthatour peopleinChurchonSundayaregenerallyfineCatholics,whoneed-notsomuchwarningsagainstthe dangersofsinandtemptation-butpreciseand iirzwticalgu:danceinthegentleartoflovingGod moreeachday.Andsothepositiveapproachseems tobetakinghold,theapproachthatinsiststhatour peoplecanrisetogreatheightsofasceticismifencouragedandguided.

WhatisbeingdonetomeettheproblemsthatsurroundtheSundaysermon?Firstofall,itisworthy ofnotethatprieststodayareconscientiousinthe preparationofsermons.Evenexperienced"veterans" writeouttheirsermonsinfull.Thecourseinpreachingtechniquesintheseminaryisconsideredmost vital.Theyoungmanstudyingforthepriesthoodis constantlywriting,delivering,criticisingsermons duringhisstudyoftheology.

IfmostCatholicsarehonest,theycannotmakethe chargethatpriests,ingeneral,donotpreparetheir sermons.Grantedthateverysermonwillnotbea

AfterIsraelwasreleasedfromcaptivitybyCyrus, someJewsagaintriedtoresettleinJordan,butthe country,thenunderGreekdomination,offeredthem scantoportunityoflabourandpeace.TheMaccabees madeseveralexpeditionsintoJordanwithaviewto deliveringtheJewsandactuallyconqueredwestern Jordan(stillunderHerod'sjurisdictioninOurLord's days.)ButtheRomanPompey,whoconquered Jerusalemin63B.C.,restoredtherightsandprivilegesoftheGreekconfederationandputanendto theMaccabeeincursions.In106A.D.allJordanbecametheRomanProvinceofArabia.

ItwasinJordanianterritory,abouttheRiverJordan,theSt.JohntheBaptiststartedhismissionas forerunneroftheLord,baptisedJesusandwasfinally imprisonedandbeheadedbyHerod.

TheBibletellsusthatJesus,travellingeastfrom LakeTiberias,oftenwentthroughtheDecapolis,a confederationoftenindependentandsovereigncity states,ofpredominantlyGreekreligion,languageand culture,which,wereallinJordanexcepttwo.Here also,inthecountryoftheGerasens(Jerah)the DivineMastercastoutalegionofdevilsfromthe uncleanman.

Half-savageMoslemtribesfromArabiaandSyria frequentlyraidedthepeace-lovingChristianpopulationsandendeavouredtowipeouteveryvestigeof theoldfaith.Overcomebytheunbearableoppression,manyChristiansembracedIslamandbecame nomadsthemselves.Othersfledthecountrywith theirclergyinsearchofreligiousfreedomandpeace.

ThecrusaderdominationofTransjordan(10991187)representedabriefinterludeinthislongperiod. The"PrincipalityofOulre-Jourdain,"whoseterritory roughlycorrespondedtothatofpresent-dayJordan, wasthemostimportantfiefoftheLatinKingdomof Jerusalem.Kerak,"TheRock,'theancientKir Moab,astrongfortress,becameitscapital.Butafter thedefeatofRenaulddeChatillon,thefamousLord etKerakandMontreal,atthebattleofHattin(1187), SaladincapturedthewholeofJordan.Thecountry revertedtoitsprimitivestateuntil1920.

Then,afterWorldWar1,theSanRemoconference entrustedthemandateofTransjordantoGreatBritain.Inthesameyear,theEmirAbdullahIbnHusseinassumedtheadministrationofTransjordanunder theBritishHighCommissioner.In1923,GreatBritainrecognisedtheexistenceofanindependentgovernmentundertheruleoftheEmirAbdullah.In 1946,Abdullahfinallybecamethefirstmonarchof theHashemiteKingdomofJordanandin1949extendeditsboundariestoincludeArabPalestine.
