Itisverycuriousindeedthatyoudidnotknow beforehandoratleastfindoutonthespotfacts whicheveryCatholicschoolchildinthiscountry knows.ForsevenyearstherehasbeenanincreasinglybitterassaultonallreligionsinRedChina.The PatrioticAssociationofChineseCatholics,whose agentsyouinterviewedinShanghai,isbutthethird suchschismaticbodywhichtheCommunistGovernmenthastriedtofoistonChina'sfourmillion CatholicstoseparatethemfromRomeandultimately toreducethemtoatheism.
Thefirstofthesewasthe"ReformedChurch"and thesecond,"theThreeAutonomies."Itishigh tributetothefidelityofChineseCatholicsthatboth failedmiserablytoachievetheirends.InJuly,1957, some240Catholicdelegateswerecoercedintoattendinga"brain-washing"conferenceinPekingandin itswakewasestablishedthePatrioticAssociationof ChineseCatholics.Itsformationmarkedanew struggleinthepersecutionbytheReds.Hithertothe Redshadconcentratedontheexpulsionofforeign missionaries.Seventy-nineBishops,3,000priests, 2.0000nunsand500Brothershadbeendrivenoutof thecountryforthegreatestofmoderncrimes-belief inGod.

TheStatecontinuedtotakeovertheschools.The threeCatholicuniversities(AurorainShanghai, FugeninPekingandTsinkuinTien-Tsin)wereconfiscated).Thegreaternumberofthe156secondary schoolsand1,546primaryschoolsweretakenover andallofthe2,742catecheticalschoolswereclosed.
Theintroductionofthe"TripleAutonomies"aimed todestroythehierarchicalprinciplewithinthe Church.Theyweresuccessfullyresisted,butatthe costofgreatsuffering.Aftersixmonthsofviolent pressattacks,Mgr.AnthonyRiberi,Internuncioin China,wasexpelledwithouttheslightestrespectfor commondiplomaticusage.Fr.BedaChang,S.J.died inaRedgaolofwantonNovember11,1951for defendingthemarksoftheChurch.Otherheroes ofthattimewereFr.MatthewChanandFr.Joseph Seng.
Bytheendof1955practicallyallthepriestsand bishopsofChinawerelivinginextremepoverty.All theworksofeducationfromprimaryschoolstouniversitieshadbeenconfiscated.Aminimumofthree seminariessurvived.
Allthiswasdonewithoutthepromulgationofa singlelegislativeactbythepolice,whoarethe arbitraryinterpretersof"popular"will.Thefaithful maystillassistatMassinthelargetowns,butin thecountrydistrictschurchesarebeinggradually andquietlyclosed.
ThesuppressionoftheCatholicPressinvolved threedailies,threeweeklies,16monthlyandthree two-monthlyreviews.

AccordingtothePress,theworldhasbeenshocked attheexecutionofImreNagy,formerPrimeMinister ofHungaryandofthreeofhisclosestassociatesin theHungarianRevolutionofOctober,1956.Nobody hastheleastreasontobeshockedexceptthepatheticallystupidliberalswhowillneverlearnthetrue natureofCommunismuntiltheythemselveshave beengobbledupbythemonster.ThissenseofopeneyedwondereverytimeaSovietmonstrosityis broughttolight,asthoughitwerearareandregrettablelapseonthepartofaregimeotherwisesolidand respectable,isgrowingalittletiresome.Noristhe worldPresslessculpableinthatitsnatchesatevery spuriouspeacegestureoftheSovietasthoughthere weretheleasthopethattheMarxistmonster,grown strongandarrogant,haddeflectedbyahair'sbreadth fromthepathofworldconquest.
Sadtorelate,themenwhosefatenowshocksand horrifiestheworld,fellvictimstotheself-samekind ofdelusion.Theydidnotcomprehendthenature ofthethingwhosecausetheyhadespoused.Having servedastoadiesoftheMarxisthorrorwhichheld theirnationinanironbondage,theyaspiredatthe endtobecomepatriotswhileremainingCommunists, butindependentofMoscow.Thepitilesslogicofthe caseisthatMoscowregardedthemquiterightlyas deviationistsandtraitors.Theymusthaveknown, foritiswrittenineverytext-bookofMarxismand ineveryutteranceoftheirhighpriestsandprophets, thatnationalismisabourgeoispretence,acapitalist devicetokeeptheworkersmuteintheirchains. Communismdemandstheallegianceofthewholeman andthesurrenderofeveryhumaninstinctinits ipnhumancause.
ThereisnoreasontobelievethathadtheHungarian revolutionsucceeded,thefateoftheHungarianpeople wouldhavebeenanydifferentfromwhatitistoday. TheNagyregimewouldhaveremainedCommunist ashastheTitotyranny.Sofarashumanvaluesare 'concerned,thequestionofMoscow'sdominationor localautonomymattersscarcelyatall.Thegrotesque systemthatdenieseverythingfundamentaltoman wouldhavegoneforwardasithasinYugoslavia. Therepressionofreligion,thenegationoftheright toown,theinterferencewithfamilylife,thesuppressionofelementaryliberties,thefiringsquads,the jails,thecruelties-allthatbarbarouspatternwe haveseenrepeatedoverandoverthroughthepast decadefromMoscowtoPeking-wouldhavepersistedinHungary.
Nearlyallforeignbishopsandpriestshavebeen eitherimprisonedorexpelled.Ofthe6,000missionarieswhoservedinChinain1943only43remainedonOctober5,1955:twobishops,18priests and15nuns.
Morethan100Chinesepriestsandbishopshave diedinprison.Greaternumbersarestillinprison, ofwhommanyhavecompletedtheirsentencesof forcedlabour.
Thesecondnationalcampaignof"repressionof counter-revolutionaryelements"wasbegunbythe GovernmentinApril,1955.
OnthenightofSeptember8-9,theBishopof Shanghai,Mgr.KungPin-mei,27Chinesepriests and300laymenwerearrestedinShanghai.
TheBishopofTaichow(Tchekiang)andanumber ofpriestsandlaitywerearrestedonSeptember10. ArrestsfollowedinAnhwei,FukeinandKiangsu.

Thenewlaw,basedona compromiseadoptedbyall politicalparties,meetsthe requirementsofBavaria's concordatwiththeHolySee, whichcallsfordenominationaltraining.
Itwaspassedbythelegislatureunanimously,with onlytwomembersabstaining.
Teachertraininghaslong beenacontroversialissuein Bavariaaselsewherein Germany.TheCatholicorientedChristianSocial Unionhaslongcalledfor denominational training, whiletheSocialDemocrats andFreeDemocratshave backedinter-denominational training.
Underthenewschool measurepublicschool teachersinthisStatewill betrainedbytakingthreeyearcoursesatoneofthe seventeachertraininginstitutesattachedtothethree Stateuniversities-Munich, ErlangenandWuerzburg.

Berlin,June7:German LutheranBishopshaveissuedaformalstatementat theirgeneralsynodhere warningallLutheransnot toforegoaProtestant churchmarriagewhenthe otherpartnerisaCatholic. Theirstatementcamealmpstsixmonthsafterthe CltholicBishopsofGermanyissuedajointpastoralletterappealingtothe youngCath'olicsofthe countrytoavoidmixed marriages.
Thepastoralletterstated atthetimethattheChurch grantsdispensationsfor mixedmarriagesonlyto avoidgreaterevil,butnever asasignofapprovalof suchmarriages.

Butscienceandtechnical skillarealsobeingexploitedtoincreasemilitary potentials.Theytherefore servetoheightenthebasic spiritualconflictthatleaves themenofourdaysotense andsouneasy.
AsChristianswewantto seeallthepeoplesofthe world-and,asfaraspossible,alltheindividualsin eachgroup-shareinthe greatermaterialproduction thathasbeenthefruitof thescientific,industrialand agriculturalrevolutions.
Yetinourendeavourswe areconfrontedbyanim= placableenemywho,behindpromisesofpeaceand plenty,aimstoimposea philosophyoflifediametricallyopposedtoourownon hundredsofmillionsofunsuspecting,uncomprehendingmen.
Thephilosophyofcommunismisthephilosophyof dialecticmaterialism.The wordsarebig.Theyfrighten.Thetragicconsequence isthattoomanyofthegood overlookorignoretheir import. thattheybeunderstood.
Materialism:thismeans whatitsuggests-namely thateverythingcomesfrom matterandismatterand returnstomatter.Thereis nosuchthingasanimmortalpersonalityorsoul.The individualisjustaunit,a thingthrownupinthe evolutionofmatter.
Dialectical-anotherbig word-explainsthenature ofevolutionwhichliesat theheartofcommunistic philosophy.Roughly,dialecticmeansclash.Dialec-
ticalevolutionmeansan evolutionthatresultsfrom clashes-fromtheclashof oppositesathirdthingresults.
Intheory,accordingto communism,therewillbe alwaysaclashbetweenoppositesinsociety:forexample,theclashofrichand poor,ofemployeesandemployers.Finallytherewill comeintobeingasortof classlesssociety.
Dialectical materialism meansthereforeanevolutionthroughtheclashofoppositesconsistingonlyof matterandwithoutpersonal ortranstemporalvalue.
TheoryMissesOut
Ofcourse,infact,even initsmostelementary tenets,thistheorydoesnot workout.Therehavebeen plentyofclashesbetween membersofthecommunisticregimewhoarecrushingtheRussianpeople.But thereisnosignofaclasslesssocietyevenamong them.Distantcementworks ifnotthefiringsquadawait theloser.
Further,itissheerhypocrisytospeakofaclassless societywhenphotographs showwell-fedcommunists besidestarvedandshackled Hungarianpeasants.
Justastheconceptofa classlesssocietyisunrealso alsoisthatoftheevolution ofmanfrompurematter. Sinceitisnotfreelyaccepteditmustbeimposed. Thusitisthatsincetheir denialofthehumanspirit provedineffective,they mustsetaboutitsdestruction.

Althoughtheaverageappearstobebetterthanin someotherpartsoftheworld,onemustbearinmind thattheareaisextremelylargeandthatthereare stillapproximately780millionnon-Catholicstobe converted.Andthisdoesnottakeintoaccountthe population,estimatedatover800millions,ofthe countriesforwhichstatisticsarenotavailable.
InthatpartoftheworldknownasOceaniathere are2,592.295Catholics,servedby2,378secularand 1.948religiouspriests,givingatotalof4,326priests andanaverageofonepriestforevery599Catholics. TheaveragenumberofCatholicsperpriestinNew Zealandis434;inPolynesia,570;andinAustralia, 597:inthePacificIslands774;andinNewGuinea, 863.TheCatholicpopulationisoverone-sixthofthe totalpopulationoverthewholearea,andsomeofthe islandterritories,notablyWallis-Futuna,arealmost entirelyCatholic.Inmanyareas,however,missionaryworkisstillhamperedbyprejudiceandadverseclimaticconditions.Thisisoffsettosomeextentbytheincreasingnumberofnativepriests.But morepriestsareobviouslyneededtoservetheneeds ofthepeopleinthemanyandscatteredislandsof thearea.

InthewholeareaofAfrica-Asia-Oceaniathereis onaverage,onepriestforevery1,455Catholics.The numberofpriestsisobviouslyinadequateforthe ordinaryneedsofthepeople.Whenoneconsiders thetremendousmissonarytasktobeundertaken,the numberiswoefullyinadequate.Itistrue,ofcourse, thatthereareplaces,particularlyinAsia,whereit isextremelydifficulttoemploymorepriestsbecause oflocaloppositionandprejudice.Thisisnottrue, however,ofAfricaingeneral,wherethepriestsare findingthemselvesmoreandmoreunabletocope withtheincreasingnumberofconverts.
ThatiswhytheHolyFatherhasrecentlymade specialappealtoalltheBishopsonbehalfofAfrica "inthehourinwhichsheisbeingopeneduptothe lifeofthemodernworld,"askingthemtoassistthe missionstherebymeansofprayer,almsandthe provisionofmorepriests.Aswehaveseen,there areareasinEuropewhicharerelativelyshortof priests,butnoneareasshort-staffedasthemissions, particularlyinviewofthemissionaryfieldwhichis awaitingdevelopment.

InaSymposiumonDivorce,heldattheUniversity ofMelbourneinMay,FatherEricPerkins,Director oftheCatholicSocialServiceBureau,inoutlining theCatholicattitudetodivorce,indicatedthepitfalls ofauniformdivorcelawwhichdidnottakeinto accountthemoralandsocialevils,resultingfrom divorce.
Inparticular,hequotedremarkableU.S.figures showingtherelationshipbetweenthedivorcerateand juveniledelinquency.Thefollowingisthefulltext ofhisaddressattheUniversity.
Marriageanddivorcearesubjectsofvitalimportancetothecommunityandtoeverysectionand memberofit.Thefamilyisthebasicunitofsociety, thenurseryofbothChurchandState,andmarriage isthebasisofthefamily.Notonlyindividualsbut thewell-beingofbothChurchandStateareaffected bythestabilityorotherwiseofthemarriagebond.
When,therefore,legislationsuchasaFederalDivorce Lawismooted,responsiblemenandwomenoweit tothemselves,theirchildrenandtheircountryto weighitsimplicationscarefullyandthentoplace theirconsideredviewsbeforetheirParliamentary representatives.
InAustraliathereisnogeneralagreementregardingdivorce.Indeed,sincethefirstDivorceActwas passedbytheBritishGovernment101yearsago,the divergencebetweenthetraditionalCatholicviewand thatheldbyvariousothersectionsinthecommunity hastendedtowideninEnglish-speakingcountries. Catholicteachingonmarriageanddivorceisbasedon reason,Scriptureandtradition.Fundamentally,it restsuponarecognitionofthefactthatmarriageis notofhumanbutofdivineorigin.
ReconcilingRightsOfThreeGroups
AccordingtoCatholicsociologyGodhasprovided forallourprincipalneedsby.meansofthreesocieties -namely,theChurch,theStateandtheFamily.The purposeoftheChurchispurelyspiritual,thatofthe Statepurelytemporal.ThustheStateisseenas ultimatelyderiVingitsauthoritytomakelawsfrom GodHimself,butitspowers-unlikeGod'sarenot absolute.Theyarelimitedtothethingsthatconcern it,namely,thetemporalprosperityofitscitizens,and legislatorsareanswerablenotonlytotheelectorsbut alsotoGodforthedischargeoftheirduties.If ChurchandStateareviewedinthislightastwo distinctandsovereignsocieties,eachsupremeinits God-givensphere,itfollowsthattheStatehasno righttointerfereinthespirituallivesofitscitizens, thisbeingtheproperfunctionoftheChurch.
TheGod-givenrightsofbothChurchandStateare tobehonouredintheirrespectivespheres.Butthe family,too,hasGod-givenrightswhichbothChurch andStateareboundtorespect.Thesearenatural rightsspringingfromthenatureofman.Amongthese fundamentalhumanrights,recognisedintheUniversalDeclarationofHumanRightsoftheUnitedNations istherighttomarry,arightnotconferredonman byChurchorStatebutbelongingtohimbyhisvery nature.Marriage,therefore,asanaturalcontractis, initsessenceanditsessentialproperties,beyondthe reachoftheState.Consequently,nomatterwhatits constitutionalpowersmaybe,theStatehasnomoral

MarriagewasinstitutedbyGodasanatural,permanentunionofonemanandonewomanforthe purposeofpeoplingbothearthandHeavenwhen,at thedawnofhumanhistory,theAuthorofNature formedthetwosexesascomplementarytoeach other,gaveEvetoAdamashiswifeandcommanded themto"increaseandmultiply."Itistruethateach individualmarriagearisesfromthefreeconsentof theparties,butthisfreedompertainsonlytowhether thecontractingpartieswishtoenterthemarried stateortomarrythisparticularperson.Theessential characterofmarriageisdeterminednotbythewill ofthepartiesnorbythelegislationoftheState,but bythenatureandnaturalconsequencesofthesex relationshipassuch,reinforcedbythepositiveteachingofGodHimself.
MarriageUnionMustBeStable
Theunionofthesexesinmarriageexistfirstand foremostforthechildasthenaturalpurp9seofsex isthegenerationofchildren.Butitisnotsufficient forchildrentobebornintotheworld.Theyhaveto berearedandeducated,andtheresponsibilityofprovidingforthephysical,intellectual,emotionaland spiritualupbringingoftheirchildrenbelongstoboth parents-tothefatheraswellastothemother. Neitherparentcansupplytheplaceoftheother. Naturegivestoeachaspecialfunction,andunless eachfulfilstheroleassignedbynatureachildis deprivedofitsrightfulupbringing.

Oncedivorcehasbeenallowedinacountry,ithas beenfoundalmostimpossibletokeepitwithin bounds.IntheUnitedStatesduringthefirsthalf ofthiscenturythepopulationincreasedby100per cent.,butthenumberofdivorcesincreasedby1300 percent.Foreightyyears-upto1937-adultery remainedsubstantiallythesolegroundofdivorcein England,butthenwiththeintroductionoffresh groundsthedivorcerateskyrocketed,theactual numberincreasingfromabout4000divorcesayear toanaverageofwellover30,000perannuminthe post-waryears.

Ontheotherhand,thecasefordivorcerestsmainly ontheindividualhardshipthatissometimesinvolved intheindissolubilityofthemarriagetie.Victim casesmaybefoundunderallsociallegislation.Consequently,thebestsocialinstitutionsarethosewhich producethefewestvictimcases.Itseemsthatfar morehardcases,involvingespeciallymothersof familiesandtheirchildren,willbefoundwhere divorceprevailsthanwherethemarriagetieispreservedindissoluble.IntheUnitedStatesalone, 200,000childrenarebeingaddedeachyeartothelist ofdivorcevictims.

Birmingham,England,June7.-Thefirst formalmovetowardthepossiblebeatificationofJohnHenryCardinalNewmanwill openhereonJune17whenanarchdiocesan courtwillbegingatheringevidenceofhis virtuesandexaminehiswritings.
ThisannouncementwasmadeherebyArchbishop FrancisJ.GrimshawofBirmingham.Thecourtwill conveneatBirmingham'sOratoryofSt.PhilipNeri, whichCardinalNewmanfoundedin1847,ruledasa communityformanyyears,andwherehediedin 1890.
Precedingtheopeningsessionofthecourtwillbe aSolemnMassoftheHolyGhostatwhichtheArchbishopwillpreside.PermissiontoestablishthepreliminaryarchdiocesancourtwasgrantedonJune6 afterthevice-postulatorofthecause,Mgr.H.Francis Davis,presentedArchbishopGrimshawwithapetition.

Althoughhehadwononlythird-classhonoursfrom TrinityCollege,Oxford,theintellectualcapacitiesof theyoungcuratesoonwonhimtherespectofthe Oxforddons.
Soon,however,thescholarlyNewmanbeganto questiontheCalvanismwhichwasprevalentinAnglicancircles.Nexthebegantoformulateapastoral idea,asortofrevolutionwithintheChurchofEngland.

In1939,whenwarbroke outhehadaspecialappointmentwithAdolfBerle, AssistantSecretaryofState inchargeofSecurity,and informedhimthatanundergroundespionageorganisationexisted,andthat high-rankingemployeesof theStateDepartmentwere membersofit.

Thensomegeniusconceivedtheideaoftryingto fireamountedmachinegun throughthepropellor blades,andwaslastseen descendingrapidlywithout apropellor.
Othersgraduallydevelopedmeansofattack andthereentersthestory ofapainstakingDutch gentlemannamedAnthony Fokker,whopersistently keptonejumpaheadin planedesign,butsuffered muchfromTeutonicobstinacy.
