When,annually,theCatholicsoftheArchdiocese unitewiththeirbrethrenallovertheworldinaday ofcontinuousprayerforthepersecutedChristians ofEuropeandAsia,itisnotaloneapracticalact ofcharitynoranaffirmationofsolidarity.Primarily itispotenttestimonytothevalueofsufferingin theChristianlife.Thosemillionsoflives,captiveand abnegatedbehindtheIronandBambooCurtains,are notwasted.TheyareconfessorsoftheFaithand theirsufferingsarefusedwiththoseofChristtomake upwhatiswantinginHisPassionfortheredemption ofmankind.Ourprayersforthemaredirectednot onlyinthehopeofreliefandforthegraceoffortitude, butweseek,too,toshareinthemeritswonfrom heavenbythecrucifixionofChrist'sMysticalBody.
Thatthoughtshouldgowithusintotheclimaxof Lent-HolyWeek-whentheChurchre-enactsthe ineffabledramaofredemption.Againthisyearby thegreatwisdomandsolicitudeoftheCommon Fatherforthecommonman,Catholicsmayparticipateinthesacredmysteriesinamoreintimate mannerthaneverbefore.TherestoredritesofHoly Week,fromthepointofviewofconvenienceandof dramaticpresentation,shouldhaveaprofoundimpact oneveryCatholicwhoavailshimselfoftheChurch's intentionininauguratingthereform.Andjustas weshareeachoneofusinthemeritsofChrist's salvificdeathandintheCrosswhichHelaysonthe Church,sotoo,welookthroughthedarknessforthe certainhopeofHerandourresurrection.
WhatdeepensthetragedyofChrist'sre-enacted Passionisthatforsomanyinourtimetheabyss ofgriefisonlyequalledbytheabyssofignorance. ItcannotbutbeatormenttotheChristianconscience thatforthemassesofoursecularisedsocietyGood FridayandEasterSundayarenothingmorethan holidays.Thereisverylittlemaliceintheworld's attitudetoChristbutthereissheerlackofknowledge whichmountsfromgenerationtogeneration.Those whoaspiredinthelastcenturytoteardownthe fromtheclassroomshavesucceededalltoo well.NottheleastofthesorrowsofHolyWeekwill bethatforsomanyChristseeminglyhasdiedinvain. WithHimthereisplenteousredemption,butthe goodnewsoftheGospelisnotwidespread.
EachEasterinthelifeofthisgenerationmust thereforemeantoeachCatholicagreatdealmore thanpersonalrenewalinChrist.Thekeynoteof ourtimes,soundedagainandagainbythePopes isapostolicity.Unlessthespiritoffaithandcharity super-aboundsandflowsoutintothehowlingspiritual wildernessthatisallaboutus,ourCatholicismwill becomeasterilething,amerematterofstalehabit anduncomprehendingconformity.ThetestofvivifyingfaithisthepassionforconquestforChrist.He cametocastfireontheearthandeachmustaskhimselfatPassiontidewhatpartheplaysinthedivine arson.WhatwaswononGolgothamustbereticulated toallmenanditwillbethecriteriaoftheJudgment whetherwefedandgavedrinktothoseofourtimes whoaredyingfromspiritualmalnutrition.

RichardO'ConnorwasborninSydneyonAugust 4,1851.
Seemingly,thetasteforpoliticswasinhisblood.
Hisfather,whosenamehebore,wasanauthority onParliamentaryprocedureandpractice,whowas ClerkoftheN.S.W.LegislativeAssemblyandlater ClerkofParliamentintheLegislativeCouncil.
Hisgrandfather,GeneralO'Connor,wasinthe FrenchArmyandtookpartinHoche'sexpedition toIrelandin1796.
Hedidhisschooling,likemanyanothergreat Catholicmaninourhistory,atthefamousoldBenedictineschool,LyndhurstCollege,andalsoatSydney GrammarSchool.
HewentontotakehisB.A.degreeatSydney Universityin1871andcompletedtheM.A.degreetwo yearslater.
Hisfirstjobwasthatofanofficeclerkinthe LegislativeCouncil.
Hisfatherhadretiredfromthetoppostandyoung O'Connorbegantofollowinhisfather'sfootsteps, commencingatthebottomoftheladder.
Tofurtherhiseducation,hebegantostudysubjectslikelogic,metaphysicsandethicsunderDr. Forrest,RectorofSt.John'sCollege,withinSydney University,atthetime.Itissaidthatattimesa classconductedbyDr.Forrestconsistedofonelone student-youngRichardO'Connor.
O'ConnoroncepaidatributetotheguidanceofDr. Forrest,whenhesaidofhim:"Hewasoneofthose menwhohaveagreatdealtodowithshapinga youngster'smind."
Duringtheyears1871-4,whilehewasconsolidatinghimselfinhisfirst branched outinjournalismtosupplementhisincome.
ThomasButler,editorofthe"Freeman'sJournal" atthetime,gavehimhisfirstliftinthefieldofwriting.
Besidesthe"Freeman"hewrote-mainlypotboilingstuff-forpaperslikethe"SydneyEcho" and"EveningPost."
Whenhisfreelancejournalismhadserveditsimmediatepurpose,helargelyabandonedit,although inlateryearshecontributedmoresignificantmaterial topaperslikethe"Freeman."
In1876RichardO'ConnorwascalledtotheN.S.W. Bar.HehadresignedfromtheLegislativeCouncil staffin1874,readlawforayear,studiedthesubject underSirFrederickDarley,forwhomhealsodid somelegaldevilling,andfinallypassedhislaw examinations.
In1878hereceivedapublicappointmentasCrown ProsecutorintheNorthernDistrictofN.S.W.
Hefirstprosecutedinacattle-stealingcaseat
Tarnworth,attheconclusionofwhichhisopponent, whohappenedtobethenotableEdwardButler,then aneminentQ.C.andleaderoftheN.S.W.Bar,patted himontheshoulderandsaid:
"Welldone,myboy.Youdidwell."
In1879hemarried.MissSarahHensleigh,the youngestdaughterofJohnSquareHensleigh,ofBendoc,Victoria.
In1883,afewyearsafterhismarriage,heresigned hispostasCrownProsecutorandwentintoprivate practice.
Hewentontobuildupalargeandsuccessfulpracticeandacquiredahighreputationasaskilfuland conscientiousadvocate.In1896hewasmadeaQ.C.
DebatingwasalwaysoneofRichardO'Connor's favouriteactivities.Inhisyoungerdayshewasa leadingmemberoftheSydneySchoolofArtsDebatingClub.inwhichsomeofthemostfamousmenof theagelearnedtheirpublicspeaking--menlike EdmundBarton,GeorgeReid,JudgeHeydonand others.
Inhisearlieryearsanotherfavouredinterestwas militaryaffairs.HespentfouryearsintheVolunteer Artillery,No.4Battery,andreceivedalandorder forhisservices.Helatersolditandusedtheproceeds tobuyhisfirstlawlibrary,whichlaterbecameone ofthemostmagnificentinSydney.
HewasoncedefeatedinaLegislativeAssembly electionforYpungby"Chris"Watson,whoyears laterbecamethefirstLabourPrimeMinisterofAustralia.
In1887heacceptedtheofferofaseatintheLegislativeCouncil-byHenryParkes.
B.R.Wise,theeminentlawyer,laterrecalledthat itwasathissuggestionthatParkesnominated O'ConnortotheLegislativeCouncil.
NotonlywasitoddthatthezealousyoungCatholicmanshouldreceivesuchanofferfromamanwith Parkes'background,butO'Connorwaswellknown asaProtectionist,whileParkeswasaFreetrader!
ParkesalwayssaidthathisappointmentofO'ConnortotheLegislativeCouncilwasthebestappointmentheevermade.
Ononehistoricoccasion,someyearslater,O'ConnorcampaignedstronglyforParkes-infact,he washismostimportantsupporter-whenParkes opposedGeorgeReidintheKingelectorate.
WhenSirGeorgeDibbsbecamePremierin1891 O'ConnorattainedMinisterialrank.
HewasMinisterforJusticeduringwhatwasa verystormyperiodinthepoliticalhistoryofthe colony.Importantlegislationoncriminallawand probatecourtprocedurewasenactedduringhis occupancyoftheJusticeportfolio.
BesidesbeinganactiveMinister,hewastheLeader 01theLegislativeCouncil.
Hesacrificedmuchprofessionalrewardasaresult ofhispoliticalactivities,andhishealthalsosuffered.
Theresultwasthatin1894heresignedonmedical adviceandtookahealthtriptoEurope.
HevisitedIrelandandEnglandbes'destheContinentandreturnedwithhishealthrestored.
Nexthethrewhimselfintothemovementfor Federation,workingdloselywithitsmajorleaders, likeEdmundBartonandHenryParkes.
Hishandlingofaffairsinthefirstfewyearswas describedas"oneofthemostremarkableinstances ofpoliticaldexterityeverwitnessedinAustralia."
Onepaperwroteofhim:"Everymemberofthe Househadnotonlyconfidenceinhim,butasentiment ofrespectandaffectionforhim."
HisFederalpoliticalcareerendedinSeptember. 1903,whenhewasappointedoneofthefirstthree JudgesontheHighCourtofAustraliaatitsfoundation-apostheretaineduntilhisdeathonNovember18,1912.
HewasthusthefirstCatholictobecomeaHigh CourtJudge.
Anotherlandmarkinhislongandvariedcareer wasanappointmentasfirstPresidentoftheArbitrationCourt-apostfromwhichheresignedafter threeyears.
Itwasfreelyassertedthat,hadhenotgoneontothe HighCourtBenchwithEdmundBarton,hemight easilyhavesucceededhimasPrimeMinisterand thusbecomeAustralia'sfirstCatholicPrimeMinister -anhonourthatwastofalltoVictorianJames Scullinnearly30yearslater.
Throughoutthevariousaspectsofhiscareeras lawyer,parliamentarianandjudge,RichardO'ConnorwasaleadingCatholiclayman,whosupported numerousorganisationsandcausesassociatedwithhis Faith.
O'ConnorwasalsoanenergeticchampiohofHome RuleandtheIrishcauseingeneralthroughouthis lifetime.
HepresidedatsomeofthemostimportantlocaldemonstrationsinsupportofIrelandandwasinstrumentalinfinancialassistancebeingraisedtoassist Irishleadersofthetime,likeWilliamRedmond.
O'Connoroncesaidwithinthehearingofleading menofthetimeinaMinisterialofficeatParliament House,Sydney: "Iwasborninthiscountryandbroughtuphere; yettheearliestpublicsentimentsthatawakenedin mewereIrishsentiments.
"AndrightthroughmylifemyloveofIreland hasbeenmyrulingpassion.

O'Connorwasoneofacommitteeofthreewhich draftedtheoriginalconstitutionalBill-hiscolleagueswereEdmundBartonandSirJohnDowner -andhelpedpushitthroughsubsequentconventionsandtwpreferendathatwerenecessarybeforeit becametheConstitution.
InMarch,1901,O'Connorwasoneofthefirstsix SenatorselectedtorepresentN.S.W.inthefirst Senate,which,ofcourse,metinMelbourneatthe establishmentoftheFederalCommonwealthofAustralia.
HewastheloneN.S.W.ProtectionistintheSenate. ThefiveotherSenatorsfromthisStatewereallFreetraders.
HewasLeaderoftheGovernmentinthefirst Senate,Vice-PresidentoftheFederalExecutive CouncilandamemberofthefirstFederalCabinet inthehistoryoftheCommonwealthunderthePrime MinistershipofEdmundBarton.Formanyyearshe hadbeenBarton'smosttrustedadviser.
IntheSenatehefoundhimselfaleaderofa Protectionistadministrationinanevenly-divided Senate.Yethenevermetwithanyserioussetbacks. HissuccessinhavingtheearlyTariffBillpassedwith littleamendmentwasratedperhapshismostnotable achievement.

Mrs.MariaAssuncaoFernandestoldthediocesan tribunalinvestigatingthe possiblebeatificationof FatherAgnelodeSouzathat herson,Domingo,wasable towalkafterhisdeformed feetweretouchedtothe priest'scrucifix.
The14thwitnesstotestifybeforethetribunal, Mrs.Fernandeswasalso thefirstwomantobeaskedforinformationregarding FatherdeSouza.Allpreviouswitnesseshadbeen personalfriendsofthe priest,whodiedthreedecadesago.
Sincehisdeathhisallegedpowertoobtainmiraculouscuresofseriousailmentshadconstantlygainedrenown.Ahumbleand obscurepriestduringhis lifetime,FatherdeSouza diedafterhecollapsedin thepulpitwhilepreaching asermonontheSacred Heartduringanovenaat RacholSeminary.
Fornineyearsheserved asspiritualdirectorandretreatmasterattheseminary.Bornin1869,hewas ordainedattheageof29. In1938hisremainswere exhumedbygovernment orderandtransferredtothe PilarConvent. Processforbeatification wasbegunin1947withthe nominationofapostulator forhiscause.Theprocess entereditssecondstagein

HisreputationgrewbeyondthedocksandevenbeyondthecitylimitsofMarseilles.Hisarticlesonhis experiencesamongtheworkersandhiskeenanalyses ofsocialproblemsattractedtheattentionofthewhole country.
Whenthepriest-workermovementwasmodified in1954,ArchbishopCharlesdeProvencheresofAixen-ProvenceandtheDominicansuperioragreed thatFatherLoewsworkshouldnotbeinterrupted.
ThepriestwasofferedthedirectionofaworkerparishhereatPortdeBouc.Specialpermissionto workthreedaysaweekonthedockswasgranted him.
WhenFatherLoewarrived,heexaminedtherectoryprovidedforhim,declaredittoobig,andwith thepermissionoftheArchbishopexchangeditwith apoorfamilywithsixchildrenfortheirtumbledownshack.FatherLoewandhistwoassistants movedintotheshackandrepaireditwiththeirown hands.Theystillcallithome.
