Althoughhehadbeensufferingforsome timefromaheartailment,deathcamesuddenlyfortheV.Rev.A.E.N.Johnston, parishpriestofKensington,earlyinthe morningofDec.13.forayearaslocumtenens inSouthPerthparish.
FatherJohnstonwasa priestofforcefulcharacter anddirectutterance.Hewas notedforhiskeeninterest innationalaffairs.
Anoutstandingfeatureof hispastoralministrywas hisgenerositytothesick anddying,oftengivingup hiswholenight'ssleepto assistatadeath-bed.
Anothercharacteristicwas hisdeepappreciationofthe priesthoodwhichmanifested itselfmarkedlyinhis friendshipforandtheready hewasalwaysprepdtogivetohisfellow priests,whenproblems aroseandespeciallywhen theywereinill-health.
In1950hewasappointedfirstparishpriestofKensington.ItwasatHoly Crosstherethathisobsequieswereheld.
Eversincehisreturn fromSouthAustraliaFather Johnstonhadbeenvery activeintheworkofthe Vocations'committee.
Hewasalsoadriving forceinorganisingthe regionalboys'schoolat EastVictoriaPark.
Saturday,Dec.8,witnessedthefulfilmentofalong-feltneed ArchbishopsolemnlyblessedthenewChapelofOurLadyofPerp CastledareJuniorBoys'Orphanage.HisGracewasassistedby andtheRev.J.Luemmen,S.C.A.
AftertheblessingSolemn HighMasswassung,the Archbishoppresidinginthe sanctuaryassistedbyRt. Rev.Mgr.C.Cunningham, V.G.ofSunburyandthe Rev.M.McKeon,director ofCatholicMigration. FatherO'FarrellwasdeaconandFatherLuemmen sub-deacon.MasterofceremonieswastheRev.T. Phelan.

Hismessagewasforthe boys;indirectandsimple languagehetoldthemthe truemeaningofthechapel inthedailyactivityofa boy'slife.Itwaslike Jacob'sladderofoldwhich connectedearthandHeaven hesaid.Itwastherethey wouldfindthetruemeaning oflifeandhelpintheir needs.
Sincethechapelwas dedicatedtoOurLadyof PerpetualSuccour,letthem learnthelessonsthe miraculouspicturecontained-gratitudetoGodand loveforHisblessedMother.
PresentattheMasswere severalpriestsandmostof theBrothersfromPerthand countrycentres.

Inwelcomingthevisitors toCastledare,Br.O'Doherty
thankedHisGraceforthe unfailinginteresthehad showninthewelfareof Castledarefromthetimeof itsopeningin1929.
Hecongratulatedthe architects.Messrs.HendersonandThompson,andthe builders,Messrs.Harnett& Horner,onthemagnificent mannerinwhichtheyhadco-operatedintheerection ofthechapel,ofwhichthey couldbejustlyproud.
Heexpressedhisgratitude alsotothosemanyfriends whohavealwaysbeenso generoustotheBrothers andboysofCastledare.

Archbishop'sAddress
His saidGracetheArchbishop hecouldvividlyrecall theday-in1929-when "Castledare"wasblessed andofficiallyopenedbythe lateArchbishopClune.It consistedthenofthehomesteadandadormitoryblock whichhadjustbeenbuilt.
Intheintervening28 yearsithasseengreatex- pansionandimprovement -newup-to-dateclassrooms,admirablekitchen anddining-hallfacilities, anablutionblock,asplen- didlyequippedhalland recreationfacilities.
Thesurroundings,too, hadbeenimmenselyim-
proved-beautifullawns, shrubs,flower-gardensallgiving"Castledare"an atmosphereofbeauty,dig-nityandrefinement-an ideal littleatmosphereforthe boysoftenderyears whowereaccommodated withinitshospitablewalls.
Untilnow,continuedHis Grace,thechapelaccommodationhadbeenanythingbutsatisfactory.Itwasonly ofcourse,atemporaryar-rangement,butitwasaltogetherinadequatetoafford satisfactoryaccommodation tothestaffandboys.
TributeToBrothers
However,theneedof manyyearshadbeensuppliedintheerectionofthat beautifulnewchapelwhich hadbeensolemnlyblessed yesterdaymorning.
Itwasasplendidbuilding -adeparturefromthetraditionalstyle,butnonethe lessgraceful,dignifiedand devotional-worthyofthe highandholypurposefor whichithadbeenerected; worthyofthestaffandboys towhomitwouldbesucha boon.Thecrownhadnow beensetonafirst-rate groupofbuildings.
Fictionhadshedmanya tearoverthelotofthe orphan.Thethreatenedfate ofDickins'"OliverTwist," aloneinamercilesscity, hadbeenrealisedinnumerabletimessincethebirth ofthehumanrace.
Throughout Australia, however,andhereinthe Westinparticular,the ChristianBrotherswere playingagloriousrolein alleviatingthelotofsuch under-privilegedboys.And notcontentwithcatering forourownAustralianboys inthat openedcategorytheyhad widetheirdoorsto receiveboys(insimilar circumstances)fromEngland,IrelandandMalta. Whatanoblework!whata sublimevocation!
TheBrothersconsecrated
whenHisGracethe etualSuccouratthe theRev.J.O'Farrell theirlivestotheserviceof youth.Theyreceivedno earthlyrewardoremolument-theydidtheirwork unostentatiously-withaltogetherotherworldlymotives.Theyforfeitedtheir righttoparenthoodinorder thattheymightbecome fathersofthechildrenof strangers.
Theydidnotdosoasa meansoflivelihood;they didsoinobediencetothe injunctionsoftheirMaster: "Sufferthelittlechildren tocomeuntoMe,"and "Whatsoeveryoudounto theleastofthesemylittle ones,youdountoMe."
Thatwork,particularlyof caringfortheophanand underprivileged,wasone beforewhichthemost thoughtlessofmenmust standwithbowedheadsand reverenthearts.

Therewasgreatexciteasmum(carryingKieran), dad,Sheelah,Veronica, Kathleen,Frances and Paddytumbledoutofthe car.
Imyselfwasexcitedand afterhelpingmumwith PaddyandKieranIstarted toruntowardsthewater.
Thewaterwascooland refreshingandtherewere twopeopletherewhomI knew.Wehadafewgames inthewaterandthenwent forawalkalongthebeach.
Myfriendssoonwerecalled awayandIwasleftalone.
Ihadanotherswim,and thenwenttohavemydinner,whichconsistedoflettuce,tomatoes,slicesofcold
chicken,cucumber,celery andwhiteonions.Forsweet therewasfruitcakeand smallcakesicedwithcherrieson.
ThenIwasgiventhe moneytobuy8ice-creams (ofcourseKierancouldnot haveanice-creamashewas only5weeks'old,buthe wasbusysuckinghisbottle whichmumwasgiving him).
Iwaitedforaboutthreequartersofanhourtogo intothewateragain.While IwaswaitingIcollected someshells.Onewas beautifulwithalovely shadeofblueandgold.I collectedabout40andthen wentintothewateragain.
Afterswimmingforabout half-an-hourIwassurprisedtolearnthatitwastime togohome,butitwasone ofthemostenjoyabledays atthebeachIhaveever had.

LaterI learned thatmost ofather mhadytribeb,ee, i,nmy duringthisfire. FormanyyearsafterIenjoyedtellingmychildren andgrand-childrenofmy rescuefromthefire.The stockmanwhorescuedme tookmetoamissionschool whereIgrewupandmarried.Now, 70years'later,Iam theonlyremainingnative ofmyonceproudtribe. HisLordshipwentonto outlinethenecessityofclose co-operationofparentswith teachers,emphasisingparticularlytheparamountimportance.inthespiritual formationofthechild,of theexampleoftheparents, andtheinfluenceofhome life.
Callingattentiontothe Rector'sremarks,inhisreport(below)onthenecessityofreading,heappealed toparentstoexercisethe strictestsupervisionover thetypeofbookand periodicalallowedintothe homes.
Thereisatypeofperiodicaltobefoundinourbookshops,andonourbookstalls, thatbyanydecent,notto mentionChristianstandard, mustbebrandedasobscene anddepraving,"saidHis Lordship.
Therehadyettobe framedalawthatwould effectivelyprotectusfrom thatparticularlyinsidious formofattackuponthe moralstandardsofthecommunity.
DwindlingProfits
Therewasonlyoneform of"censorship"whichthe publishersofthattypeof literatureunderstood,orfor whichtheyhadanyrespect, andthatwasthepersonal, individualandfamily,censorshipwhichbegantoshow itselfinthegrowthofthe "inthered"figuresintheir bookstatementsandbalance sheets.
Itwasofverylittleavail merelytobemoantheexistenceofindecentliterature. Whileitsolditwouldbe published(atleast,asthe lawanditsinterpretation stoodatpresent).Refuseto buyit.Refusetoallowit intoyourhome,encourage yourfriendsandacquaintancestodothesame,and youstrikeamosteffective blowagainstit,"concluded BishopRafferty.
"Nobusinessmanisinsensitivetodwindlingprofits,leastofallthetypeof individualwhowillpeddle pornographytothedetrimentofthespiritualand moralhealthofthenation."
Inthecourseofhisannualreport,theV.Rev.J. Hawkins,S.J.(Rector) stronglyrecommended parentstofosterreading amongtheirchildren.
Therewasawidespread weaknessinEnglishworryingschoolsanduniversities overrecentyears,heaid. Theyattributedtheweakriestotheprevalenceof talkingfilms,radioand comics,whichdidaway withtheneedofreadingas ameansofenjoyment.
GuidedReading
Yet,apartfromitsintrinsicvaluefordeveloping themind,increasingknowledgeandprovidinga capacityforquietrelaxation,anincreaseintheart ofreadingwasvirtually necessaryforcompetencein usingtheirownlanguage.
Forchildren,guidedreadingwasnecessary,ofcourse, andguidancewasprovided bytheschool,buttheproblemwasmainlythatreadingwasnotbeingdoneat allbymanyboysandtheir mindsmisseditssolid nourishment.
Thereligioustrainingof theboyshadproceeded quietlyandnormally,continuedtherector,building themupintomenwholoved OurLordandHisChurchmenwhobelievedthatin Christalonewasthesure hopeoftruthandgenuine happiness-menwhobelievedthatnotjustasa subconscious background idea,butasanactivestudy andinterestwhichwould notdieoutwiththeirschool days.
Thereshouldbealink betweenthatstudyand whathadbeensaidabout reading.Noonewasmore deservingofstudythan JesusChrist,andnoone wasstudiedmoreprofitably. Yet,noonewasmorekept inthebackgroundofpublic interest,ifonecoudjudge thenatureofpublicinterest bywhatthepopularpress andmagazinesprovidedfor it.
PrayerImperative
Thestrongthoughlargelyindiscerniblesecularising influenceofpopularpublicationsbadlyneededan antidoteoftrulyChristian reading.Inamoregeneral sensetoo,theirsecularlives neededtheinfluenceof Christtohelpthem,tokeep themsure-footedandsecure andtrulycontentintheir wayoflife.
HencethestaffofSt. Louishadtriedtopresent totheboystheneedofdaily prayer-notjustinschool daysbutalways.Whatfood wastothewell-beingand vigour.ofthebodilylife, prayerwasforthemental andspirituallife.Pope PiusXIIcalledprayer"the breathofthesoul."
FatherHawkinssaidhe wasnotexaggeratingwhen hesaidthatprayerwasthe mostimportantpartoflife -moreimportantinsome waysthanMassandCommunion,becauseifaCatholicdroppedprayerhewas muchmorelikelytodrop MassandCommuniontoo.
Prayerwasthenecessary dailyremindertoourselves ofwhatmatteredmostand whatmatteredlittle.Itgot lifeintoperspective.Itwas anecessarydailyactof loveofChristonwhomtrue happinessdepended.

OliverPlunkett,thefamousIrishmartyr,Archbishop ofArmaghandPrimateofAllIreland,whowas executedatTyburnonJuly11,1681,belongedtothe samefamily.HisancestorswerecreatedLordsof Kileeninthe12thcentury.
Hismother,formerlyaMissO'Kelly,ofTycoole, onherfather'ssidewasdescendedfromtheancient PrincesofAughrinandonhermother'ssidefrom thehouseofO'More,ChieftainsofCloughanCastle, inKing'sCounty.ShewasthenieceofanAustrian Count.Plunkett'sfamilyandkinspeoplelostmuch oftheirpropertythroughthePenalLaws,buthad managedtoretainsomeofit.

Plunkett'ssuccesswasregardedasasevereblow tolocalOrangeism.DanielO'Connellexpressed publiclytheviewthatyoungPlunketthad"liberated thecountry."
Aftertheelectionshewastenderedapublicdinner atRoscommonasamarkof"gratitudeforthegreat serviceshehadrenderedtothecauseofindependenceingeneral,andparticularlytotheinterestof hisnativecounty."

TheyearafterhereachedSydney,Plunkett,who inthemeantimehadcometobelinkedwithRoger Therryintheupperbracketoflayleadership,was involvedinanawkwardsituationwhich,fortunately, reachedahappysolution.
FatherTherryhadgotintodifficultieswiththe authoritiesovertheboundariesofthelandupon whichtheCatholicbuildingsatSt.Mary':hadbeen erected.Hehadencroachedonlandthatwasnot strictlypartoftheoriginalgrantandhaderecteda fenceonlandclaimedtobeGovernmentproperty.
Thepioneerprieststoodfirmandwouldnoteven agreethattrusteesshouldbeappointedandthe churchlandconveyedtothem,whiletheownership ofthelandinquestionwasbeingdetermined.
TheGovernmenttheninstructedPlunkett,as Solicitor-General,toinstituteproceedingsagainst FatherTherry.Fortunately,Dr.Ullathornearrived soonafterwards,appointedtrustees(Plunketthimselfwasoneofthem)andstraightenedoutthe matterwithoutmakingPlunkett'spositionanymore difficult.
In1835JohnHubertPlunkettwasasignatoryto the"MemorialtotheRightRev.DoctorPoldingin favouroftheRev.J.J.Therry,presentedbythe laymembersofthecommitteeofSt.Mary'sChurch," inwhichDr.Poldingwasbeggednottoremove FatherTherryfromSydney.
ButPlunkettwroteanaddendumthat,whilsthe concurredinthesentimentsoftheMemorial,he couldnotbeassociatedwithanymovetointerfere withecclesiasticalarrangementstheBishopmight make.
Thenextyear,in1836,Plunkettwasappointed Attorney-General,insuccessiontoJ.Kinchela,who hadbeenhinderedbydeafnessandwhoseworkhad beenlargelyperformedbyPlunkett.
Atthisstagehewascloselyassociatedwith GovernorSirRichardBourkeinthedraftingofthe ChurchandSchools'Actof1836,the"MagnaCharta" ofreligiousfreedominAustralia.
IntheearlyfortiesPlunkettwasabroad.Before hleftthecolonyhewastenderedapublicdinner attendedbyGovernorGippsandtheleadingfigures ofthecolony.
InEnglandthenewlegislationonthegovernment ofthecolonyofN.S.W.wasincourseofpreparation andPlunkett'sservicesandadviceweresoughtby theSecretaryofStatefortheColoniesatthetime.
Hisviewswere,apparently,influentialespecially onthequalificationsanddisqualificationsprovisions.
OnAugust5,1843,PlunkettreturnedtoSydney, resumedofficeasAttorney-Generalandtookhis seatintheLegislativeCouncil.InMarch.1847,he wasappointedtotheExecutiveCouncil.
Fromthenuntil1856hecontinuedintheseoffices, figuring,too,asCrownProsecutorinfamouscases liketheMyallCreekcase,inwhichsevenwhitemen werehangedforthemassacreof28ormoreaboriginalmen,womenandchildren-aswasdescribedin thelifeofSirRogerTherry,whowasassistantprosecutorinthecase.
InOctober,1844,Plunkettappliedunsuccessfully forthepostofChiefJustice.AlfredStephenwas appointedandheldthepostuntil1873.
ItwassaidatthetimethatPlunkettwasoffered thevacancyonthebench,causedbytheelevationof JudgeStephentotheChiefJusticeship,buthedeclined.
In1848,whenpubliceducationwasfoundedunder adualsystemofeducationcontrol,Plunkettwas appointedchairmanoftheNationalBoardofEducation.
Earlierhehadplayedakeyroleinthedraftingof thelegislation,uponwhichtheeducationsystemof thetimewasplaced.
Plunkettwasoneofadraftingcommitteeof10 metnberschargedwiththepreparationoflegislation uponwhichtobaseasystemofrepresentative government.WithW.C.WentworthPlunkett favouredanhereditaryupperhouse.
Whenrepresentativegovernmentwasintroduced in1856PlunkettresignedfromhispostasAttorneyGeneralandwaselectedtotheLegislativeAssembly, representingArgyle.
EarlierhehadstoodintheSydneyconstituency, butwasdefeatedbyabloc,whichincludedMessrs. Cowper,Parkes,CampbellandWilshire.Theplan ofcampaignofthisgroupwonforitthetitle"The Bunch."
Plunkettthenturnedelsewhereandwaselected fortwoconstituencies,butchosetorepresentArgyle.
ParkesandCowperintroducedthesectarianquestiontoPlunkett'sdisadvantageandevenexploited thepresenceofCharlesGavanDuffy,whowasvisitingSydney,againstPlunkett.
SirJohnFairfax,founderof"TheSydneyMorning Herald,"cametoPlunkett'sdefenceandobservedof
himthat"hewasthegreatestfriendofciviland religiouslibertyinthecolony."
Atthebeginningof1857heresignedfromthe AssemblyandwasnominatedtotheLegislative Council,succeedingSirAlfredStephenasPresident.
Itwasinthesameyear,1857,thatPlunkett arrangedthepurchaseof"Tarmons,"thehomeof SirCharlesNicholsonatPottsPoint,asthefirstSt. Vincent'sHospital,fortheSistersofCharity.
PlunketthassincebeencalledthefounderofSt. Vincent'sHospital,whichlatermovedtoitspresent site.
DuringhispresidencyoftheLegislativeCouncil in1858,heclashedwiththePremier,CharlesCowper,inhiscapacityaschairmanoftheNational SchoolsBoard.Theresultoftheclashwasthatthe Governmentdismissedhimfromthechairmanship oftheboard.
Plunkett'sreactionwastoresignfromallpublic posts,includingmembershipandpresider.cyofthe LegislativeCouncil.Hewasofferedreinstatement ifhewouldwithdrawcertainofhiscorrespondence inthematter,whichwasregardedasoffensive,but hedeclinedtodoso.
FromSeptember,1858,toNovember,1860,PlunkettwasagainamemberoftheLegislativeAssembly.InJune,1861,hereturnedtotheLegisla- tiveCouncilandhewasVice-PresidentoftheExecutiveCouncilinJamesMartin'sministryfrom October,1863,toFebruary.1865.
AfterareconciliationwithCharlesCowper,he acceptedthepostofAttorney-Generalinhisfourth ministryfromAugust,1865,toJanuary,1866.At theendoftheCowperregimePlunkettremaineda memberoftheLegislativeCouncil.butdidnottake aprominentroleinpublicaffairs.
HeshiftedtoMelbournein1867,intheinterests ofhiswife'shealth,buthecontinuedtovisitSydney regularly,travellingbyship.Hislastpublicrole wasthatoflaysecretaryofthesecondProvincial CounciloftheChurchheldinMelbournein1869.
Formanyyears,PlunkettwasontheSenateof SydneyUniversity,andforthelastfiveyearsofhis lifehewasVice-Chancellor.
Hewasamemberofthecommitteewhosework ledtothefoundationoftheUniversity,anda memberofthefirstSenate,towhichRogerTherry andBishopDaviswerealsoappointed.
EarnestAndHonestOfPurpose
PlunkettdiedinMelbourneonMay9,1869.He wascomfortedbyArchbishopPolding,whowasin Melbourneatthetime.Hewassurvivedbyhiswife, buthadnochildren.Histwinbrother,whohad settledinVictoria,risingtothepostofpolicemagistrate,diedafewyearsbeforehim.
SpeakingofPlunkett,the"Freeman'sJournal" saideditoriallyafterhisdeath:"Whateverjudgment thecolonistsmaybeinclinedtopassuponparticular eventsinMr.Plunkett'spoliticalconduct,everyone willgivehimcreditforearnestnessandhonestyof purpose.
