Whenin1896theSuperioress-GeneraloftheCongregationof OurLadyoftheMissionwasonherwaytoNewZealand,shemet the
HisLordship,BishopGibney,whoproposedafoundationof CongregationforPerth. andThisofferwasaccepted fiveSisterswerechosen fromtheChristchurchcommunityinNewZealand.On October9,1897,thesepioneersarrivedinAlbanyandthenjourneyedtoPerth wheretheystayedwiththe SistersofSt.JohnofGod untilthe16thwhenthey tookuptheirabodeina5roomedcottageinVincentstreet,belongingtoHis LordshipBishopGibney.
Onthenextday,Sunday, intheSacredHeartChurch, Rev.FatherDuffofficially welcomedtheSisterstothe parishofHighgate.
Aweeklatertheyopened schoolwithanattendance of38pupils.However,by theendoftheyear,the numberhadincreasedto 140.OnSeptember18,1898 thefoundationstoneofthe presentconventandschool ti waslaid,andonJanuary 22,1899,thebuildingwas blessedandopenedbyMgr. Bourke.
OnthefollowingMonday,thechildrenoftheprimary school,tothenumberof * 120,wereremovedtotheir newschoolroomwithinthe conventbuilding.
Inthetwoyearsfollowing,moreSistersarrived fromNewZealandto strengthentheteaching staff,andthepupilswho weretoformthenucleusof thepresentHighSchool wereassembled.
Withthearrivalof boarders,theaccommodationsoonbecametaxedto itsutmostcapacity,soRev. FatherCrowleydecidedto buildaparochialschool. Thiswasblessedandopenedin1914.
OtherCentres
Inthecourseofthe60 yearssincetheestablishmentoftheCongregation atHighgate,conventshave beenopenedinother centres.Theyear1902saw thefirstbranchhousein Australiaestablishedwhen acommunitytookupresidenceinFremantleand conductedahighschoolfor daypupilsandboarders.
4 LatertheEastFremantle parochialschoolofMary Immaculatewasalsoadded totheirchargeandisservicedfromtheFremantle community,asisalsothe schoolofSt.Benedictat Applecross.
In1925,theFremantle communityalsotookover theparochialschoolinthe newlyestablishedparishof Palmyrauntilaconventwas openedtherein1952,dedicatedtoOurLadyof Fatima.
In1908theSisterswere askedtostafftheparochial schoolatMaylands.The Sistersforthisnewmission weresuppliedfromHighgateuntil1926whenacommunitywaspermanently settledinMaylands.
Tomeettheever-growingenrolment,aJunior HighSchoolwasestablishedin1929atLearoyd-street, Mt.Lawlev,tocaterforthe youngchildrenofthatdistrict.
Notonlyinthemetropolitanareawerefoundalionsmadebutalsofurther afield.Threehouses,cateringfordaypupilsand boarders,wereopenedinthe wheatbelt-Waginin1914, Narroginin 1918and Katanningin1926.
IntheAugustvacation eachyear,Bushies'holiday schoolsareconductedby theSistersinthesecentres. Thelastfoundationmade inWesternAustraliawasin 1948atRockingham.The objectofthisfoundation wasprimarilytoprovidea rest-houseduringthelong vacationfortheSistersfrom themetropolitanandcountryconvents.
VictorianHouses
In1922developmentextendedeastwardswhen,at theinvitationofHisLordshipBishopFoley,afoundationwasmadeatDonald inthedioceseofBallarat, followedtwoyearslaterby afurtherestablishmentat Charltoninthesamediocese.
In1934,afoundationwas madeintheArchdioceseof Melbourne,atOakleigh. Sevenyearslater,theSisterstookupresidenceat EastKew,wheretheycater forthechildrenofthisdis-
trictandofNorthBalwyn.
Thewesternsectionof theAustralianProvince numberseightconvents, fiveintheArchdioceseof PerthandthreeinthedioceseofBunbury.Duringthe, past60years,14,500pupils havepassedthroughthe Sesters'schoolsatHighgate.
ConventsInEast
IntheEast,therearetwo conventsintheArchdiocese ofMelbourneandthesame numberinthedioceseof Ballarat.Inthetwelve HousescomprisingtheProvince,thereare134Sisters, staffing16schools.
IntheearlystagesofdevelopmentoftheCongregation,thepersonnelwas forthemostpartsupplied bytheProvinceofNew Zealandbutin1903a novitiatewascanonically establishedatHighgate, andsincethenasteady streamofvocationshas followed,theSistersrecruitingtheirnumbers mostlyfromtheirpast pupils.

InSeptember,1944,theArchbishopofPerth(MostRev.R.Prendiville, D.D.,B.A.)announcedthataMissionStationfornativesintheArchdiocese ofPerthwastobeestablishedatWanderingBrook,tobenamed"St.Francis Xavier'sNativeMissionStation."
Inmakingtheannouncement,hisGracesaidthatforalongtimehehad feltthatlittleornothingwasbeingdoneforthefull-bloodedandhalf-caste nativesinthesouthernportionoftheState,andthatfromtime.totimehehad learnedthatmanyweredriftingintoGreatSoutherntownsandleadingidle anddissolutelives.
InspiteofthemanydifficultiesofestablishingsuchaMissionduringthe waryears,theArchbishopresolvedtoproceedwiththeestablishment.
AttheoutsetitwasnecessarytoselectanareafortheMissionwhich wouldnotoverlapwiththe"sphereofinfluence"ofanyotherestablished Mission.
AfternegotiationswiththeStateGovernmentauthorities,aNativeReserve of9,600acreswasgazettedsome10milesnorthofthetownshipofWandering.
AttheinvitationoftheArchbishop,theVicarApostolateoftheKimberley (theMostRev.0.Raible,D.D.,S.C.A.)providedastafftoconducttheMission.
SirRossMacDonaldwroteinhisReportonNativeAffairs,1948:"For practicallythefirsttimeaMissionisbeingestablishedtoaproperplanand withalong-termpolicyinview."
RequestedbyHisGrace,thePallottineFathers(SocietyoftheCatholic Apostolate)agreedtoassumecareoftheinstitutionandtookupresidencein December,1944.
EnshrinedintheAustralianbushthemissionpropertyisabouteighty milesfromPerth.Itisaremotespot,yetconvenientlyclosetocivilisation. WanderingBrookwindsamongthehollowsofitssoftlyundulatingslopes lendingbeautytothescene.
ThecentralpartoftheMission,whichwasanoldabandonedfarm,is cleared.Therestisbushland.WhenthePallottinecommunitycametoSt. FrancisXavier'sMissibntherewerefewamenitiesandtheybegantheirwork whilelivinginanoldwoolshed.
Thefirstbuildingto,beerectedwasatemporarymonasterywhichwill servelaterformissionmachinery.Atthesametimemachinerywaspurchased andamachineryshedwasbuilt.
Animportantinitialworkwasthemakingofaserviceableroadconnected onDecember28,1954,andthefirstcallwasputthroughtoSt.Mary'sCathedral, Perth.
Whilethisworkwasgoingon,landwasbeingcleared,stockyardswere beingbuiltandareliablewatersupplywassought.
AllthesedetailsdidnotobscurethemainpurposeoftheMission,which istocareforhalf-castechildren.Attentionwasgiventosecuringacommunity ofnunswhowouldintroducetheirrefininginfluenceintomissionlife.Stone wasquarriedonthepropertyandaconventwasbuilt.
TheconventbuildingistheprideofSt.FrancisXavier'sMission.Nothing wassparedinitsconstruction;theSisterswhowoulddevotetheirlivestothis workofloveandcharitywouldbesuitablyandcomfortablyaccommodated.
Asubstantialorphanagewithroomfor40girlswasbuiltalso.This buildinghas,inaddition,akitchen,diningroomandaspaciousschool-room. Withitscompletionallwasready,andinearly194930half-castlegirlswere inresidence.
Consolidationcontinued,andaMissionfarmestablishedduringtheinterveningyears.Threehundredacresareundercropandafurther100acres cleared.Machineryhasbeenpurchasedandashedbuilttohouseit.Adam hasbeencompletedwhichconservestwomilliongallonsofwater,besidesthe boresandwindmillsconstructedintheearlydaysoftheMission,. wasopened,togetherwithanewclassroomandrecreationroom.TheMission
December,1955,sawfurtherdevelopment,whenaneworphanageforboys nowcaresforgirlsandboys,allofwhomreceivetheireducationattheMission andaretrainedindomesticscienceandfarmwork.
TheyarecaredforbytheSistersofMaryoftheCatholicApostolate, whoserefininginfluencecanbefeltinthisoutstandingestablishment.
Evenwiththoseadditions,allchildrenseekingadmissioncouldnotbe cateredfor.Plansweredrawnuptoerecttwonewdormitories,class-room, sewing-roomandrecreationroomforgirls.Theseadditionswereurgently needed,andhavenowbeenadequatelysupplied.
TheMissioncontinuesitssteadydevelopmentunderthecapablehands andsupervisionofFatherAnthonyWellems,whoisassistedbytwoBrothers, fourSisters,andtwofarmhands.
TheMissionisindebtedtotheDepartmentofNativeWelfareandthe LotteriesCommissionfortheirgenerousassistanceinhelpingtofinancethe newbuildingsrecentlyundertaken.
Thecompleteschemeistoaccommodate200nativechildren.Itisestimatedthat125willbeinresidenceduring1958.
ThefutureoftheMission,ofcourse,willdependontheabilityofthe Missionfarmtosustainthefinancialburdenofthewholeestablishment.This isnoeasytask.Whenfirstclearedthelandtakesaslongasthreeyearsbefore itisreallyproducing.Independence,therefore,isstilltocome,andwhenit doestherewillbeheavyarrearstomakeup.
Nevertheless,allconcernedwiththeMissionareoptimistic.TheSociety forthePropagationoftheFaithandtheHolyChildhoodhavebeengenerous. Withprayerandcontinuedhelpthisworkforunder-privilegedchildrenwill developandGodwillbeglorifiedamongsomeofHisleastchildren.
Thisoptimishissharedbyothers,forSirRossMcDonaldconcludeshis reportof1948thus:-"IbelievethisMissionwillbeoperatedonidealprinciples, anditiscertainthatitwillplayamajorpartintheupliftingofthehalf-caste populationofthesouth."
ThewhitepopulationofthisStatecannotaffordtobesmugaboutthe nativeproblem.ItisadutybothofreligionandcitizenshiptohelptheMissionarieswhohavetakenuponthemselvestheobligationsofallcitizenstotheir dark-skinnedbrethren.

Afterreadingthisbook,onerealises,too.whythe delegationsthathavevisitedvariousCommunist
countrieshavebeendeceived,althoughcomposedof menofgoodwillandnon-Communistinsentiment. Theywerelookingfortheancientformsofreligious persecutiontheyhadreadaboutinhistorybooks-throwingChristianstothelions,burningpeopleat thestake,closingallthechurchesinacountry.They didnotallowforthefactthatreligiouspersecution cantakeotherforms,thatitmaybelessblatantbut moreeffective.Sincenoneoftheancientformsof religiouspersecutiontookplacebeforetheireyes, sincethechurchestheyvisitedwereopenatthetime theyvisitedthemandsincetheconstitutionhada clauseaboutfreedomofworship,theyoftenreported ontheirreturntheabsenceofreligiouspersecution. TheywerethevictimsofCommunistdeceitandtheir ownout-of-dateviews.
Infuture,ifsuchdelegationsaretoreportonthe treatmentofCatholicsinCommunistcountries,they should,topreparethemselvesadequatelyforthetask, carefullyreadMr.Galter's,orsimilarbooks,sothat theyavoidthemistakesofotherdelegations.Itwill clarifytheirviewsonreligiouspersecution,make themwonderwhethertheBearisholdingtheChurch inalovingembrace,orsqueezingitslowlytodeath.
