Afeatureofthemeeting wasthewholeheartedparticipationbythemeninthe singingunderthedirection oftheparishpriest,theRev. A.Lynch,andthereverence whichmarkedthemen's participationintheexercisesmarkingthemeeting.

Heexplainedhowduring theyeartheExecutivehad soughttodepartfromthe normalproceduresassociatedwiththesocietyinan efforttoencouragethemen oftheparishtoattendHoly Communioneachmonthin abodywithoutrequiring themtoenteranycommitments. However,this arrangementhadnotproved asuccessandinrecent
monthstheExecutivehad returnedtothenormal ritualaslaiddownbythe society.

Duringtherecentannualconferenceofthe ParentsandCitizens'Associationitwasagreedto pressforanincreaseintimedevotedtospiritual training,especiallyinhighschoolswhereitwould domostgood.Accordingtopressreportsincreased religioustraininginGovernmentschools(preferably intheformofadailyorweeklyschoolassembly) wassought.Wemustcommendtheeffortsofthe delegatesresponsibleforsuchinitiative,although themattercannotbesaidtohavebeenbrought forwardprematurely.Thesheer,sordidmaterialism ofoursociety-soplainlyrevealedbytheactionof thebanksinthehire-purchaseracketandbythe publicexcitementovernewspaperpuzzlesandjackpottotes-iscryingoutfortherestorationofspiri- tualvalues.Andthatdemandofthehumanheart anditsneedsisbeingpermanentlydeniedbythe perpetuationofseculareducation.

1.Usesreligiousinstructionsforpoliticalpurposes againstthepolitical,socialoreconomicsystemofthe HungarianPeople'sRepublic;
2.Influencesbythreatsorviolenceeithertoforce attendanceatorabsencefromreligiousclasses.
Itisremarkablethatnolegalsourcesmaybefoundbywhichsomebodymightbecondemnedforthese "crimes"exceptthefirstarticle,becauseneitherthis decree,noranyotherlegalstatutoryordercontains it,. anyruleswhichcouldbethebasisforalegaltrial. Sotheseprovisionsofthedecreearemerelybombast,usefulweaponsforCommunistpropaganda.
Theotherarticlesofthedecreecontainthecondi- tionsofthereligiouseducation,whichallmaybeused tobantheinstructions.
Theinstructionsmustbeheldbeforeorafterthe compulsoryschoolhoursintheschools,buteverybody whoisfamiliarwiththesituationknowswellthatthe numberofclassroomsisnotyetsufficient,andin manyschoolsthechildrenaretaughtinthreeshifts.
